Choosing the Best Crib Newborn

The Westport Cot Bed is an elegant crib that will look gorgeous in a Scandi-style nursery. It's also very adaptable with three different mattress support heights and can be transformed into an infant's bed.

Cribs can take up a lot space, so bassinets may be a better option for homes with small spaces. However, a lot of parents choose a crib for safety reasons.

Safety

The health and well-being of your baby is dependent on the crib you select. You want to make sure that it meets the current safety standards, and is free from any dangers that could harm your child during sleep. It should be constructed well and sturdy, with no loose pieces that could catch on clothing or create the risk of choking. It is essential to follow the directions of the manufacturer to set up and use the crib and to regularly inspect the crib.

The first thing to look at is the space between slats. It should not be more than 2 and 3/4 inches apart to avoid your baby falling over or getting their legs trapped between them. You should also be able to easily reach and observe your baby's crib. If you aren't reach your baby, the slats must be wider and not as close together.

The mattress support system is an additional aspect to consider when choosing the crib. It should be adjustable, so that you can lower the crib mattress as your child grows. nursery cots will help to reduce the chance of your child climbing out of the crib, which is a common situation as they begin to crawl.

A fitted sheet that is secure enough to fit over the bed and solid and sturdy construction are additional security features to look for. It is also recommended to choose a crib with fixed sides, rather than one with drop sides which could be hazardous for your baby. It is also recommended to sleep in the same room with your baby for six months or so, and then transfer them to their own room when they are old enough to be monitored when they sleep on their own.

Last but not least, make sure the crib is placed away from radiators and windows and that hanging items such as curtains or blind cords are not in reach. Also, you should remove any items that could be the risk of choking like blankets or pillows. Be cautious of buying second-hand cribs, since they may not have met the current safety standards or been recalled for different reasons.

Design

It is important to keep in mind that cribs may appear the same but must still adhere to strict safety standards. For this reason, most of the cribs we reviewed are of a similar design to ensure uniformity of structural solidity. The majority of cribs have circular bars without gaps or rough surfaces that could trap the baby or squeeze them. We also tested each crib and rated it for its simplicity of use and assembly. We suggest choosing a crib with fewer parts to avoid confusion.

The Evolur Sprout crib is among our favorites. It has a stylish contemporary design and is available in a range of colors, including two-tone options. It also comes with an all-purpose mattress fitting and is Greenguard Gold Certified for having minimal volatile organic compound (VOCs).

Stork Craft Equinox 3 in 1 is a different option. The crib is sleek and modern, with minimal details that make it perfect for modern nursery. The crib is available in a variety of finishes and comes with four different mattress heights, so your baby can use it from the time of birth to toddler. The crib was sturdy and stable. It didn't flex or creak when a large child was seated.

If you're planning to have more children, you might think about a convertible crib. They can be transformed into a bed for a toddler and then into a larger mattress, providing excellent value for money. Our test parents gave the Sweet2Sleep Crib excellent marks as an example of a convertible bed. Several of them commented that the side rails with a drop-down feature made nighttime feedings easier and safer, and that the crib was roomy enough for the baby to be comfortable while mom and dad were asleep.

If you prefer a traditional style, the Carter's by DaVinci Colby 4-in-1 crib is a good choice. It is less expensive than the Stork Craft, and it has a timeless style that is compatible with the majority of nursery decors. It comes with three different mattress heights, but it may be a bit too small for toddlers and petite parents.

Mattress

A crib mattress that can be cleaned will come in handy for newborns. Spit-up from babies and diaper leaks can cause mattresses to become dirty and damp and result in mildew or other bacteria that can affect infants. Choose a mattress that can be wiped down with a cloth or scrubbed with mild cleaner, and select a mattress cover that is waterproof to prevent fluids from seeping into the mattress and causing health issues.

Find a mattress that is rated to last for 10 years, which means it's prepared for toddlers and beyond. A lot of the mattresses in this review are reversible and have infant and toddler sides, which will let you use them from birth until your child is ready for the full-size bed.

A firm mattress for the crib is best because it supports their spines as they are developing. A super-firm sleep surface also helps reduce the risk of SIDS, which is more likely to happen when an infant's head sinks into a mattress that is soft.

If you are looking for a firm crib mattress be sure to examine the label to make sure it meets Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standards. The CPSC mandates that mattresses are tested for the ability to withstand fire and water as well as lead and other chemicals that could pose a risk to infants. There are also certifications such as Greenguard, CertiPUR and GOTS which show that the mattress was tested for volatile organic compounds that could cause harm to infants' nervous and respiratory systems.

Another factor to consider is the weight of a crib mattress. If you're unable to lift heavy objects or you don't wish to move an item that weighs a lot, you may want a lighter mattress. Newton Wovenaire, for example, is only 8 pounds while Naturepedic Organic Crib Mattress – Dual Firmness weighs 20lbs. This makes it one of the heavier mattresses featured in this review. It is also made of foam rather than woven-core inners, which makes it much easier to move around in comparison to traditional coil mattresses that weigh more.

Assembly

New parents will appreciate a crib that's easy to put together. You want to find a crib with firmly-secured hardware and with no sharp edges or rough patches that could irritate the skin of your baby. Beware of cribs with drop-sides or cutouts for headboards and footboards -- these features aren't in line with current safety standards.

If you're looking for a crib, keep in mind that you'll require a toddler bed conversion kit (if you choose a convertible crib). These kits are offered separately by the majority of manufacturers. These kits are usually inexpensive and will aid your child in making the transition to a larger bed more easily.

Convertible cribs are a great option for families with several children. These cribs are built to last and generally can be transformed into a toddler bed, daybed or a full-size bed.

The DaVinci Jaden 4-in-1 crib solid-wood crib which is GREENGUARD Gold certified and has four mattress heights. It is available in slate grey or white to match any nursery decor. The Sprout Crib, another top-rated crib is made from sustainable harvested Baltic birch. It is in compliance with all U.S. safety standards, in addition to the standards of Australia, Canada and Europe. It has a simple and stylish design that will go with any bedroom decor. The Sprout crib is one of the tiniest cribs we tried, weighing just 6kg. It's easy to move and comes with a handy bag for transport.

The Oeuf Modern Crib, which was runner-up in our tests, is constructed from sustainable New Zealand pine. It has received numerous awards from parenting magazines like BabyCenter and Babble. It has a medium-height profile and can be converted from an infant crib into a toddler bed with rail or a daybed without the rail. It's simple to put together and has a lot of aesthetic appeal, but the thin finish is prone to scratches during normal use.
