S B I've successfully used the demo version of this, and I have been waiting for it to re-appear on Bits du Jour. I'm about to purchase a license--this is a great app.

This is a *very* powerful and intuitive hex editor. It handles files, raw disk, etc.

It knows about various data representations and several flavors and sizes of each: characters (ASCII, Unicode), integers, floating points, times, file times, etc., etc. as well as little-endian and big-endian.

If you click on a hex character or a readable character in the Edit window you will see the data interpreted in 17 ways in an "Inspector" window. Click on a value in the Inspector window and the corresponding bytes in the Edit window are highlighted.

Open an image file, wav file, zip file, executable, etc. and a pre-made template will go one further: there is a "Template" window which interprets the data: there is a tree structured list of the internal data items, their names, sizes, data types, values, address, etc. and sub types, their names, . . Click on one of these entries and see it highlighted in the Edit window.

You can edit (alter or repair data from files or disk, etc.) through the Edit windows (hex or character), Inspector window, or Template Window. The altered data field is now shown in red in the Edit windows.

There are many existing templates (for media files, executables, hard drive structures, etc.), and you can easily make your own.

Many, many other functions. All the functions I have seen are intuitive and have the extra "little touches" that make them more useful and work well.

The help file is good, well written, extensive, and has a number of pictures, but could use a few more.

The only thing so far is that I don't understand the app's icon.

Where was this a few years ago when I needed it daily?

Graeme Sweet The $19.95 deal is for a home/academic use license, but we are also running a 60% off sale for the commercial license (regular price is $129.95 but sale price is $49.95). When you click the 'Buy Now' button above you can then choose whether you want to buy the home/academic or the commercial license.

S B I use the 010 Editor and like it a lot.

Not only is this full featured app *much* more than a hex editor on steroids (it even knows about complex structures, e.g., JPGs, ZIPs, directory headers; and lets you define your own), yet it has the smaller grace-note usability and efficiency touches that are rare in apps of any kind and make it more fun to use.

The 010 Editor is *the* editor for digging down deep and making things happen.

Roger Thomasson @ Vilanik No, we do not censor posts that critique or question Bits du Jour policies.  We do, however, delete or move posts that are rude, spam, inflammatory, or off-topic.  We believe that since each promotion page is product-specific, the resulting conversation should be as well, keeping it as useful as possible for our potential customers.   Customers are more than welcome to voice their general BDJ concerns on our support forum.  Of course, rudeness and spam will not be tolerated their either :-) I'm checking into your policy question now.  The policy description referred to by G Orby is a new feature on Bits, and has not fully incorporated. This is why it is not yet available on this page.

Graeme Sweet Just to clarify, we license our software per user not per machine. If you purchase our software you may install it on multiple machines as long as it is just you using the software. We also include free upgrades for one year from the date of purchase.

Please note that the above discount price of $19.95 is for home/academic use only. If you wish to use the software for commercial purposes, you will need to purchase a commercial license which is also on sale for $49.95 (regular price is $129.95). Both types of licenses can be purchased by clicking the 'Buy Now' button above.

If you have more questions about our licensing please check out our page 'http://www.sweetscape.com/support/kb/' under 'Purchasing our Software'. Thanks!

Michael R. I bought 010 Editor at BDJ over a year ago.

After a long time I rechecked your homepage and saw a new update did appear in the meantime. The former version was 3.1.3 and now version 3.2 did appear.

So I was quite irritated, that after the installation my key did not work any more.

In the usual definition upgrades mean there is a new version-number before the decimal-point. Changes in the lower numbers are just updates. And shouldn't them be free? (In your policy you explicitely mention upGRades)

Btw.: There are a lot of bug-fixes in v3.2. Does this mean your customers which do not use your program so often and so don't want to update/grade have to live with them, even when they are fixed?
Jul 21 2011 at 8:13am Copy Link

Experience Here's the upgrade policy.
http://www.sweetscape.com...b2009.html

You receive free upgrades for a period of 1 year from the date of purchase.
Jul 21 2011 at 9:12am Copy Link
0
Graeme Sweet Thanks for your interest in our software. We do reserve the right to charge upgrades for point releases (e.g. 3.2 - 3.3) but these releases will have a bunch of new functionality. This is similar to the Mac world where you need to pay to upgrade from OS X 10.5 to 10.6. As stated before you do receive free upgrades for a year from the date of purchase and bug fix releases (e.g. 3.2.1 - 3.2.2) are always free even if more than a year has passed. If there were critical bugs in 3.1 and a user did not want to upgrade to 3.2 we would consider back-porting some bug fixes on a case-by-case basis.

Exolon Miner @Genie au Travail

Where do you see a VB Runtime?
After your post I installed the 010 in an sandbox and had a look at all created binaries. There is no VB runtime. It looks like 010 is completely written in C++ and the Nokia/Trolltech Qt Framework.

Graeme Sweet Just to clarify the the deal today is $19.95 for a home/academic license or $49.95 for a commercial license. Both prices can be accessed by clicking the 'Buy Now' button. The regular price for 010 Editor is $49.95 for a home/academic user or $129.95 for a commercial user. The price includes free upgrades for a year and after that time if you want to purchase an upgrade it is $19.95 for a home/academic license or $39.95 for a commercial license. 010 Editor is a C++ application and does not install the VB runtime but it does have to install some required C++ DLLs.

Michael R. Outstanding features. I should really use it more often.

As a - as already mentioned at a comment last time - former v3.1-buyer of 010 editor, I am wondering, if I could give away my former license to another person when buying 010-editor in the current version today.

Is that possible? Would I need to contact you about the new licencee (and does he need a new S/N)?

Also it would be nice, if you could state that v4, which you mentioned half a year ago 'should come out in a year' (which would mean within half a year from now), would be free for today's buyers (no matter when this will really come out).
I suppose this would make me (and perhaps some others) convince to buy today (instead of waiting for the next time).

Of course, any pre-information about new features in v4 would be very interesting...

Graeme Sweet Hello Michael. Thank you very much for your comments! You may transfer a license to another person - just contact us at 'supportsweetscape.com' with the user details and we can do the transfer for you.

As you mentioned, v4 should be out in 5-6 months and this will be a free upgrade for people who buy now. v4 will have quite a few changes including a streamlined interface, better support for huge text files, word wrap, plus some new script/templating features.

Marco Pivetta I read the answer to Michael R.:
"We do reserve the right to charge upgrades for point releases (e.g. 3.2 - 3.3) but these releases will have a bunch of new functionality."
and the following rule:
"Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for 12 months."
I think the rule should be more clear if it was written "minor upgrades" instead only "upgrades". Or am I wrong? You could clarify this point.
Jun 11 2012 at 5:34am Copy Link

Graeme Sweet Just clarify, all releases (major or minor) are free for 12 months. After 12 months, bug fix releases (e.g. 4.0.1 - 4.0.2) are still free but other releases (e.g. 4.1 or 5.0) will require an upgrade to use.

Lupke Brother I have a small doubt between buying 010 editor or another Bitsdujour product, Hackman suite V9.2 (lifetime upgrades): see http://www.bitsdujour.com...man-suite/ I like the disassembler of the latter. It's not finished yet, but I like their idea about an advanced hex tool combined with a lot of other tools.

any users who can help with experience between the two? HMS uses VB6 which will be supported in windows 8 (32 bits) 010 editor does not use VB. I am not a die hard debugger, so I need a bit of advice here. The hex editor is the most imortant to me, so 010 editor looks also great.

Exolon Miner Hi Lupke Brother,

I don't know HMS, but I work daily with 010. I know nor better Hex editor than 010. The scripting engine and template functionality make my life so much easier every day. 010 is really powerful.

010 uses a C like scripting language which is easy to understand and well documented.

Btw: What do you mean with: " HMS uses VB6 which will be supported in windows 8 (32 bits) 010 editor does not use VB." ?
Jun 11 2012 at 10:34pm Copy Link
0
Lupke Brother @ Exolon Miner,

Thank you for your comment, it really helps me to choose.

I mean Visual Basic. HMS needs it. There was some discussion about Microsoft no longer supporting VB in windows 7 and 8. It is supported, but only 32 bits, no 64 bits (small summary: http://msdn.microsoft.com...88708.aspx). This will be no problem with 010 editor.

Roberto Ernest, are you searching a text editor or an hex editor? (sorry my question, but if you are searching that features and 010 editor does not have them i could recommend you another hex editor in the forum).

Usually in hex editors people search another features, like base converters, calculators, structure view, bits operations, binary comparisons...

I use another editor, but 010 looks cute too :)

I normally use tiny hex editor because of its portability and even though it is a fairly basic hex editor it usually serves me quite well in the field, but I would like to have a really decent hex editor combined with a text editor with equal capabilities of some stand alone text editors for home use as I can then make better usage of the better and more advanced capabilities such as you described in your message above.
Again, Thanks for your info.

Amit Hello Graeme,

1) Does it have - Autosave - whatever is typed - is saved instantly.

2) Is toolbars and icons customization possible - as in notepad++

3) Save last opened files on next launch.

4) Can 010 change the resources of any software too with the function of changing the taskbar icon of the software ? If want to edit a ugly icon of it ?

Thanks.

Graeme Sweet 010 Editor does not have an autosave function like this. The toolbars are not currently customizable but that is coming fairly soon. 010 Editor can reopen the last set of opened files (see the bottom of the 'Startup' page). The resources of an exe file could be edited although it requires some work. If you really want to do this you may be better off using a tool specifically designed for editing exe files, usually called a pe editor.

Mike B This is a great hex editor - the new version also runs on Mac & Linux. If you need to look at or edit binary data, this is something you should get.

xtabber This was always a great hex editor. With Version.5,it has become an excellent text editor too. Two features I greatly appreciate are syntax highlighting that includes the ability to write your own rules, and column editing.

I continue to use Kedit and EditPad Pro because each has certain unique features I depend on in my work, but 010 Editor has become my go to editor for everyday tasks, not least because I can right click on ANY file and view or edit it.

The only thing missing is a portable version, so I am delighted to hear that one is in the works.

Michael R.

Are these new features HTML/XML-interpretation implemented as script, so they can seen as examples to demonstrate the power of your script-language or are they build-in features?

Haven't digged too much into the upper functionalities of 010Editor, as a developer I am wondering, if I could create a own data-structure, in which I can use kind of if-conditions and loops. This might be useful to define this before implementing the write/read-procedures in the final programming-language and afterwards, when debugging is needed...

As example, this condition-check could be:
if byte #3 is $00 this should be the last byte of the file
if byte #3 is $01, the next 4 bytes should be interpreted as LENGTH len of the block following directly behind and this block should be interpreted as MP3-File-Structure (which yet has to be defined afterwards, but I have seen there already is a sample in the library). Behind that interpret the next char as byte #3 (i.e. check for $00, $01, ...) (loop)
if byte #3 has another value the file-structure is faulty.

Graeme Sweet @Michael
The XML/HTML editing features are mainly for syntax highlighting and the syntax highlighting engine cannot currently be accessed from scripts. With templates you can do quite complex if-then and loop statements and call different structs for different areas of the file. Currently you have to have all the structs in the same file or use #include statements - there is no way to take a block of data and run a sub-template on that data although we are planning this in a future version. Let us know if you have any questions on this.

Type Aw I'd like to buy this but I can't help but feel ripped off by the SWREG/Digital River checkout. $20 is about £13.30 which is just perfect for an impulse buy!
However, SWREG is charging £18 (£3 VAT and another... £1.70 for.. something.)

I'm now questioning how often I'd hex/bin edit/compare during the maintenance year. So I've gone from an insta-buy to a pass, simply because of your checkout.

disenchanted @Type,

Don't feel bad. The software payment processors are now charging US residents sales tax on our purchases as well.
You guys have a VAT and now so do we. I noticed sales taxes now appearing on my online software purchases, courtesy of the payment processor.

I purchased some software from a website a couple weeks ago.
At first I did not buy it because they were now charging sale tax. I investigated the payment processor for a day or two. I contacted them and they replied that they were now collecting sales tax for purchases from folks in my state.

They NEVER ANSWERED my questions as to how they felt they were legally entitled to do so.
Despite the fact they had no physical business presence in my state and therefore should not be allowed to collect sales tax from me, they did so anyway.
After much researching, it seems that their parent company has "voluntarily" decided to collect sales tax from residents of all US states that assess a sale tax.
The only online vendor I trust to accurately and legally assess sales tax on buyers would be Amazon. Being the largest US online marketplace,
They have been adding sales taxes to more and more states, as they were directed to do so. (They probably have a staff of lawyers that actually know the tax laws). But even Amazon hasn't assess sales taxes on my purchases yet.

I don't agree with the payment processors decision to "voluntary" just tax everyone, from all states. Even though they do not appear to have any legal directives to do so. BOHICA

Michael R. Just started digging into your zip-example:
A short question about that:
There is a comparison,like
if(tag==0x04034b50)
which is exactly true, if the byte-sequence is
$50 $4b $03 $04.
This makes sense - lowest byte is the first - but is a little hard to read.
Is there perhaps a function which reverses it's argument, e.g. rev(),
with which the test would look like
if(tag==rev(0x504b0304))
which would be quite better to read.

If not, perhaps an idea for a next update...

Kevin Andresen 010 Editor has been a very useful tool for me. I'm fairly sure I bought it here originally (under a different account that I lost). I paid for the upgrade to v5 last year.
Recently, however, I've needed to compare two binary data files with 20 byte records (e.g. long, double, int). I had discovered that a new data file I received was missing 1/3 of the records covering the same time interval. Comparing bytes with 010 Editor is insufficient help because it's really records that have to match. BeyondCompare will let me specify record length in a binary compare, but, unlike 010 Editor, won't show me a translation of the record, which would let me easily look for a pattern in the removal of records. (I could convert to carefully formatted text, but I'd rather be able to use an 010 record template after I've made one.)
Is there any chance that there will be record by record comparisons in the near future? (I have not found an affordable alternative to 010 Editor. Plus, I'm used to it.)

Kevin Andresen This is amazing. Just yesterday at work, I felt a binary file hadn't been been written correctly, in a legacy format, at work. (I'm converting a 20 year old eeg program, in C++, to Unicode). I got my first license at BitsDuJour and upgraded in 2013 for home. Since I didn't have a business license, I downloaded the latest version as a trial, opened the tutorial, and wrote up a template to show how extra bytes had been added. Finally, I had a reason to really master the template. When I think of how I was happy to pay $149 for PowerGrep, $19.95 sure seems like a bargain for 010 Editor. I pay $600-something for Visual Studio and its binary editor is, well, pathetic (and I'm glad it's there; don't get me wrong).

Mappi75 I have the question by my own..

But 010 Editor is mainly a hex editor with text editing.
If you are a hardcore programmer maybe other editors are better.

I installed atm:

010 Editor
UltraEdit
EM Editor
Sublime Text 3
NoteTab Pro
EditPlus (i personaly use but now i have to buy a upgrade and look for options too).

Its near impossible to find out whats the best editor in a few hours ^^

In my opinion 010 Editor has a fair offer and you cant go wrong.

If you have further expectations you have to try the demos.

UltraEdit is for me only an option if you buy the lifetime license,
which nobody else offers - but its 3times the price of the normal license.

But if ultraedit is like winzip and you need only winrar (for me winrar is the best).

Hourglass94 Whilst evaluating the trial version and looking through the menus I noticed an option in the format menu to remove trailing whitespace. Is there an option somewhere to delete leading spacing.

By this the option to delete any spacing at the beginning of a line to the end of a marked block or end of file.

I sometimes get files that have this 'irritation' and a feature to remove this would make life a whole lot easier.

Graeme Sweet One thing you can try is to select the lines you want to delete the whitespace from and then press Shift+Tab multiple times until the whitespace is deleted. If the whitespace is nicely lined up, you can also try holding down Ctrl on your keyboard and selecting the whitespace by clicking and dragging the mouse. This makes a column selection and then you can press Del to delete the whitespace. Let us know if this won't do what you want. Cheers!

Eric Dear Mr Sweet,

Re: License term

A few minutes ago, taking advantage of this offer, I purchased a Home license for this product.

While "The Fine Print" at this page states that "After you purchase 010 Editor it may be used indefinitely.", after entering my registration credentials into the product I was met by a notification suggesting that my license is valid until August 2021 (i.e.: ONE year) only ...

Could you please clarify? Is this purchase Lifetime (as the info at BitsDuJour would have us believe), or Subscription (as the product's notification would suggest)?

Thanks in advance for a prompt & enlightening reply,

Cordially,

Eric

Graeme Sweet Yes, our licenses are permanent and include one year of upgrades, support and repository updates. If you want to upgrade to a new version released more than one year after your purchase date then you would need to pay an upgrade fee. Let us know if you have any question on this. Thanks!

Pavel User Good improvement between versions, very good SW. Maybe can be a little better auto identific. of code pages (ANSI / UTF-16, UTF-8 etc.), but globally thank you for offer, I have purchased. :-)

Robert User After getting to see a friend using this editor, I jumped on it when it was at version 6.03. Now, it is at version 11.01 five years later. The developer continues to work on this product, unlike so many others that try to see how much they can make without updating their software. I upgraded at 7.0.3. and now I am ready to upgrade again.

PLEASE NOTE: Look at the bottom of the description text. If you have purchased this program in the past, you can upgrade for only $13.95 for home or academic users, and only $27.95 for commercial users. I'm retired from teaching, but I still like to program, so most of my day is spent in front of a computer. This editor not only works well as a Hex editor, but it also is a great programming editor, and there is a Mac edition and Linux edition. In the early days of the PC and Linux was starting to get some attention, I found myself in front of two computers. Just when my fingers were starting to settle into one system's editor, I would have to switch to the other system. My fingers usually took a little bit to adjust. I wish this editor had been around in those days. I could have been more productive.

If you are using XP, the developer has versions from 9.x down to 3.x that will work with XP.

When you open a file in most hex editors, you get a continuous string of bytes, and all in groups of the same size. One side of the display for Hex and the one side for ASCII/UTC-*. But those strings of bytes in binary files are not how the file was designed. Binary files typically have chunks of data, and they are different sizes depending on where in the file those chunks start. If you know the format of the binary file (typically designed as a struct), you do not get to see it in the same manner (structs) with other hex editors. You can spend a lot of time counting and writing down on paper what data is in a specific offset from the beginning of the file. Wouldn't it be great if the hex data was presented to you in the same format as the struct that data pertains to? Show me an editor that does that on Windows, Macs, and Linux, and at a reasonable price. Any programmer would consider that an essential tool to have. 010 Editor can do just that. 010 Editor has a lot of templates available for download on just about any common file type and many more obscure file types.

The 010 Editor also has a good collection of "scripts" to perform various tasks that are also available for download. They can really be timesavers.

I know young programmers hate to spend any money on a good text editor, but the best advice I can give anyone, is a decent editor is much less than what you would spend on your friends during one night out. It is a hurdle that once you are over it, you will feel a lot better about yourself, as if you are now in an elite crowd, and you will be.

If you spend any amount of time investigating this program, you will see that it is unique in its field. Visit the developer's website, and look at the tour, and every other page (the website is not that huge). I know this sounds like an ad, but I have no connection with the company, other than I really like this editor. I've probably wasted my breath here because anyone that is a real programmer is bound to already have this program.

Jo Ann Rice I've downloaded the app on my new Mac Mini with Big Sur 11.3.1 and it seems to be working, but I want to be sure that it will be supported as your information states macOS OS X 10.7 to 10.14. If not yet, will there be an update soon that will allow for the newer MacOS ? If so I would go ahead and purchase it, but if not I would pass for now.

Graeme Sweet We do support Big Sur but we forgot to update the website and we'll get that fixed up. Note that we do not have a native M1 version yet although that is coming. 010 Editor appears to work fine on Rosetta 2 for M1 macs.

Mike B 010 is not only a great editor if you need to deal with binary files - it's a great general purpose text editor too.

I just updated to v11 and noticed one brilliant new little feature (not sure if it's new to v11, but it's new since v8):

- Only Display Linefeeds if Different than the File's Default Linefeed Type

So now I only have to see the funny end-of-line character when it's a problem. I wish my other editors supported this option.

My upgrade has also caused me to find at least one other brilliant feature that was in my old version, but I never noticed before:

-Highlight

You can ask the editor to highlight certain classes of characters - very nice especially when looking at a hex dump and you want to know where the line breaks are.

Good stuff!

Bruno User I very warmly endorse Mike B's recommendation, Graeme Sweet having helped me out not once but twice, the last time just yesterday - I hadn't been aware that the Bits sale had been already running, so I wouldn't have expected immediate help even in this "stress" situation -, for my questions, having come up not by fails of the program but just since I'm not an expert in these "binary things".

Some other paid binary editors may be as good, perhaps (many are much more expensive...), but here, the ascii-ansi functionality comes on top, and let me say that from extensive experience in "developer responsiveness" - or the more or less total lack of it, even for "full price" customers (which in this case, I'm not even, having bought 010 here on bits some time ago) -, that Graeme's responsiveness is outstanding, and that that is very rare!

Thank you, here again, for a brilliant program and then for far-above-standard after sales policy!

Jo Ann Rice Thanks guys for all the positive feedback for the app. I've gone ahead and purchased it. For me it's more because I can't find a real "clean" text editor for Mac that really strips all the hidden code. Some do some, some do most, but so far this one has done all so I'll be able to use it for lots of little projects. Thanks much!

Michael R. Is an upgrade to v13, which I suppose will be published later this year - the history file indicates a new version is published about once a year - free for today's buyers?

Graeme Sweet Yes, version 13 will be released later this year and will be a free upgrade to anyone who purchases today.

It is not shown in the "About" box
Thanks

Graeme Sweet We do not currently list the home or commercial status of a license in the About dialog and the only way to tell is to look at your sales receipt.

Mike B A note from a long time user of this editor:

If you need a hex editor, just get this. So many features and cross platform to boot. Just the other day I was able to use the histogram feature to show someone that 90% of a data file consisted of 2 values (0x00 and 0xff) so we could easily optimize it.

Even if you don't need a hex editor, this program is a fine general purpose text editor - especially now that it supports projects (though I'll admit I have had a lot of experience with the new project feature).

I have only had occasion to ask for support a couple of times over the 10+ years I've been using this editor, but each time the support was swift and helpful.

Jeff Maxton Does the upgrade extend the current license by 1 year, or will the new expiration date be 1 year from now? For example if my current license expires in December 2022 and I purchase the upgrade now, will the license then expire in October 2023 (1 year from now), or in December 2023 (1 year from current expiration)?

Graeme Sweet Thanks for the nice comments! Purchasing an upgrade automatically extends the current license by a year. In your example the new expiration date would be in December 2023. Cheers!
