What are people saying about Advanced Task Scheduler

Robert Bull @Bits du Jour:
Policy states
"Each license allows installation on 1 computer, but Advanced Task Scheduler may not be used at exactly the same time on each of them."
Methinks your boiler-plate text needs a little editing...

Phil Tobin @ Robert Bull: LOL!

Re Advanced Task Scheduler: this basic version doesn't include the ability to awaken the PC from sleep or hibernation , so home users who don't want their PCs to be running 24/7 may find that a stumbling block.

Southsoftware Upgrade policy is very simple: if you purchase 1 license to Advanced Task Scheduler, then you can upgrade to 1 license of Advanced Task Scheduler Professional at $20 USD. You only pay the price difference. As today Advanced Task Scheduler is free, everyone can upgrade by the link above.

Southsoftware Additionally, this promotion gives you Advanced Task Scheduler with 1 month free upgrades. This means that you can use the software indefinitely, but after 1 month you will not be able to upgrade to a newer version. By contrast, Advanced Task Scheduler Professional is sold with at least 1 year free upgrades.

Mr Dave Is this safe? Searching for "Southsoftware malware" on google brought up many references like the one below. I've never seen a file with with so many problems reported on VirusTotal.com. It's possible this file had the "Properties" changed by some other malware, or the program was modified by other malware. Any response from Southsoftware?

Mr Dave Constantin, thanks for the quick reply! The file referenced in my post above appears to be from a different product (time synchronizer) from Southsoftware. A program like Advanced Task Schedule has power to do lot of good and bad, it can run anything whenever it wants. So forgive me if I'm a little overcautious on this one. I was looking for any signs that Southsoftware may have bad intentions and found a few. My search found many more examples of zero infections and good reviews. The "bad" files may have started out fine and gotten infected or altered by other malware on someone's PC. It's getting very difficult anymore to know what software can be trusted. As far as I know I've NEVER gotten any kind of malware from Bits du Jour, thanks!

Adrian Miller Actually a lot of your comparisons in the vs table are misrepresentative, Task Scheduler does do things you claim it doesnt.....you might want ot check with Microsoft, im sure they wont be happy with you making claims that arent true, just my five cents....

Other assertions of "features" beyond what Task Scheduler does are downright dangerous:

Schedule hidden tasks when no logged on users....want me to list the reasons why? Let me know

Thats a big freaking no no for anyone concerned with their PC security.

Seriously people avoid this and learn how to use Task Scheduler, and run things with correct user credentials, not hidden and "any" user
Aug 11 2014 at 3:11am Copy Link
3
Southsoftware Hidden tasks are designed to schedule tasks that does not require user input and can be run invisibly for the currently logged on user or even when there is no user logged on into the system.

Another benefit of hidden tasks is that they will guaranteedly start at the specified time with no matter if any user is logged on into the system or not.

Chris Roy Jackson @Constantin Florea & SouthSoftware Please explain the meaning of the following line (Line #1) in your referenced "Virus-Total Report": Jiangmin Backdoor/SdBot.ocd 20140809 Thank You !!! Also to SouthSoftware: You need to Go to Windows Task Manager (in Windows 7 or higher) and see for yourself that some of the comparisons on: http://www.advscheduler.c...kschd.html are simply NOT Correct !!! I don't have the time to do your Job and note them all here, but there are SEVERAL Items which you say (on the above page) that Windows Task Scheduler does NOT do, That IT DOES DO !!! (several under "Schedule types") NOTE: Though it may appear to the Contrary, I am ATTEMPTING to Help You by showing you how to get the goodwill of your (potential) customers by providing ACCURATE Information about the benefits of your product Without "knocking" another product for "faults" that it does NOT Have !!! Malcolm Woodgate Having seen that SouthSoftware would only answer Chris Roy Jackson in a private mail message, I have to wonder what they don't want every one else to know. This can hardly be described as open behaviour.

Add this to the alleged "false positive" backdoor/SdBot.ocd. Symantec describe this as follows:
Backdoor.Sdbot is a Trojan horse that opens a back door and allows a remote attacker to control a computer by using Internet Relay Chat (IRC). The Trojan can update itself by checking for newer versions on the Internet.

I think I prefer to play safe now rather than be sorry later. It may be free now but installing it could prove to be a costly in the future.

Actually, Constantin Florea answered the "Virus False Positive" issue (above) perfectly to my satisfaction:
"@Chris Roy Jackson - Since all the other antivirus programs report the installer as clean it means the report you mention is actually a false positive."
And it is TRUE That NONE of Bits Downloads have EVER been infested with any form of "MalWare" or OTHER "Baddies" !!!

The only reason SouthSoftware answered me PRIVATELY on the issue of the
ERRORS in their Comparison Chart was that they wanted to enlist my assistance in Pinpointing those errors which they could not find.
I have not (as yet) responded to their request, but I suppose now I have an obligation (both to THEM AND to the "Bits Community") to clear the air on this issue, So I shall do my best to complete my research in the next 3 hours (by approximately noon to 1:00pm Pacific time).

Chris Roy Jackson @bitsters & SouthSoftware
I have to apologize about the time, but it's been a long two days!
I'l FROM California, but right now I'm on the other side of the World !!!
It's WAY past my bedtime (almost time to get up) and I just started to check Window's Task Scheduler... I'm WAY Too Tired to do this so I'm going to sleep until 900:pm Pacific time. NOT Knowing if this offer will be extended until tomorrow, I will do my best to get the results posted by 10:30pm Pacific
(1½ hours before the expiration of this offer if it is NOT extended to tomorrow) !!
NOTE:
This should ONLY affect you if you're considering the Professional (or above) versions, as I believe that the tool itself is very functional, and if you are not considering those options (but only the Basic), then by all means: It is FREE today... Get it now! But if you have a use for the advanced features; do your own "due diligence" to see if it meets your needs !!!
As near as I can figure, any errors on the comparison charts were (I believe) innocent mistakes. The company seems VERY Responsive and I wouldn't hold that against them at This Point !!!
Again, There IS a Trial Version that you can try out, and if the Program meets your needs, then by all means Get IT!!! The Pricing today seems very good for what's being offered (again, assuming you have a need for this functionality and the 5 licenses)
Downloads of the Software & Manuals can be found on:
http://www.southsoftware....loads.html
ONE Final Consideration... Now might be the time for SouthSoftware to address the issue of Refund Policy, since it is NOT mentioned in the "Fine Print" (above) NOR is it addressed in the ASP's Code of Professional Conduct.
I hope that is helpful to someone!!!

Adam Bridge Thanks SouthSoftware and BDJ - I am very happy with your free download. I automated a laborious daily external site file download and it worked in the background so well I actually thought it hadn't ! I would have loved to have the wake up from sleep/hibernation feature but the price jump from from $ 0 to $ 50 is just a little too steep for me. If you could reduce the upgrade price at some stage on BDJ I'd seriously consider it. But in the meantime thanks again for a great offer !

Mark Douglas I would like to schedule a task to run between 8:30 AM and 5 PM and execute at different intervals.

For example, I may have one application that runs from 8:30 AM through 5:00 PM and starts every 5 minutes.

Another I may have start at 9:00 AM and run to 3:00PM. It would execute every 2 hours.

Is this type of automation possible?

Southsoftware This is possible in Advanced Task Scheduler Professional. You need to use the Run daily (weekly or monthly) schedule type and choose Run minutely (hourly) in the "Time in day" option. There you can define period and intervals when the tasks will run.

Mark Douglas Thank you for your prompt response. I love your software but I have a suggestion. I suggest an on/off switch on the client that disables all scheduling.

I see that we can disable every individual task in the group, but if there are many groups, it is tedious.

This would be valuable if, for instance, we wish to step through the tasks and execute them manually.

Fletch @Noggin The Nog

A more appropriate comparison would be to the "paid" edition of System Scheduler. Their free edition is very limited though it looks useful - thanks for the mention.

Though not entirely intuitive, ATS does allow organizing task by groups.

The most interesting part of ATS is that you can fire multiple actions (called shortcuts) in a tingle task. You can even add logic statements to the task to alter its behavior. Built-in Perl/Python are interesting too. Not sure the other product has these features.

Richard Blake The component selection step offers, for each item, the choices
'Will be installed on local hard drive' and 'Entire feature will be installed ...'
Not clear to me how these differ. Where is the choice to Not install the item? I would have chosen that for Additional Languages.

Would it be appropriate to allow standard Windows Scheduler items to be displayed in ATS? How about allowing editing of them, or migrating them (selected individually) to ATS (and deleting from Windows Scheduler) so that they can be customized in ways only ATS supports?

Fletch +1 on Richards comment about displaying the standard Windows Scheduler items. I was thinking the same thing. In another tab or group.

@Richard Blake: interesting observation about the install. That's a pretty standard install dialog so he probably just overlooked the option for that. Or, for some technical reason, it has to be installed anyway.

bvssunnydale One of the demo screenshots seems to say that that ATS only works when cpu is on and user logged in - am I correct to assume that "logged in" isn't the same as "screen locked" and that this would/will work when the screen is locked? Thanks.

Southsoftware @bvssunnydale: you can run tasks when the screen is locked either by creating tasks on the current user's tab, or on the "All Users" tab with terminal services

When no user is logged on, you can run tasks on the hidden desktop

Steven Avery Just a little compliment to Southsoftware. When I checked, I saw a signon from 2012. Logging in, they had all the information about my earlier purchase, the link to the last applicable download, the activation code, and I have one activation left (plus I can start with 30 free days). Pretty impressive for a small, inexpensive software.

Missing:

Information about the company, who, where.

Upgrade possibility.
(granted, the Bits is probably better anyway, especially considering the fact that it is a one puter at a time, they do have an interesting policy that allows another installation after six months.)

The FAQ and such is quite good.

Mr Dave Does this require Windows' built in Task Scheduler to run? I'm asking because on my PC (Win 10/64) the Task Scheduler can no longer be started. I've searched for answers for several weeks and decided it's impossible to fix without a reformat, losing lots of BitsDuJour and GiveawayOfTheDay programs, and many many weeks needed to reload all my purchased programs. So that's never going to be fixed.

Is Advanced Task Scheduler Basic or Professional a replacement, and can it take over all the tasks Windows' Task Schedule does (start Windows Update, all the programs that load when Windows starts, disk maintenance, etc.)? If so, I would gladly pay $15.98. Is there a demo available so I can see if it will work on my PC?

disenchanted A couple of questions:

1. Is this program SYNC-able between computers?
I have 2 computers, one by the bed and the other on the desk.

Can the 2 computers somehow SYNC up so that the schedules would be the same on both?

2. Do you have any sort of multiple license "family pack"?
For more than one computer.

Like perhaps a 3 to 5 license pkg?

1. Scheduled tasks from the "Replicated tasks" group in Advanced Task Scheduler Network Edition group can be redistributed over the network:
http://www.advscheduler.c...er-network
2. Advanced Task Scheduler is licensed per computer, and not per user.

HJ B You describe the software on a very theoretical basis. That probably suffices for some who have a tech background relating to this kind of thing. Your software might become substantially more appealing if your website provide a more concrete scenario of how a user might activate and terminate specific functions or applications during the course of a day or week or month.

"Activation is based on the hardware configuration of your computer. If you upgrade some significant parts on your computer, reactivation might be required. You will be able to reactivate your software automatically in 6 months after last activation. You can activate your software as many times as you want on the same computer (with the same hardware fingerprint)."

Southsoftware Regarding network edition, please be informed that the Server will NOT run the tasks on the Client computers. You will need to install the Server on every machine you want to run scheduled tasks. Main advantages of network version are API for editing tasks programmatically and "Replicated tasks":
https://www.advscheduler....er-network
You can use professional version, if you do not need these features.

Doug Lietz Before performing a system reboot of my desktop computer, is Advanced Task Scheduler able to first identify all programs that are open, and perform data save functions for all them? And... can it handle cases where there are multiple documents open in a single app... like several spreadsheets in Excel for example?

Then... after the restart, can I have it open open everything back up to the way it was before the reboot... including all documents, spreadsheets, browser windows/tabs, etc.?

Plus... can I have it perform the shut down procedure as described above, then wait 6 hours before starting up again. So for example, shutdown at 1am and restart at 5am.

If it matters, I have my computer set up to require that I log in after a re-boot is triggered. After I log in, is when windows gets anything running again, that is in the "start with windows" list of processes.

Taking into account all the variety of the existing programs and configurations, we can't support such feature. It would be better for you to put your computer into hibernation at 1am and wake up at 5am.

geo User @Southsoftware
Have a question on the licencing policy. From THE FINE PRINT
"Each license allows installation on 1 computer.
Transfer of a license to another owned computer is not allowed.
Online license activation is required with a hardware footprint, and 1 installation per footprint".
So, do I understand this correctly:
1. I install the software on my laptop, use it for 6 months then I get a better laptop.
There is no mechanism to remove the licence from Laptop A and install to Laptop B?
2. Or Laptop A has windows go belly up ( as it has at least for me since win 95 on a somewhat predictable schedule ) and that is the end of the Advanced Task Scheduler software, is that correct?

Can we get the official answer to these scenarios on record here?
I believe it stops people from buying this offer, for sure it stops me!

Thanks for a prompt response.

1. You will be able to reactivate Advanced Task Scheduler on a system with different hardware fingerprint automatically in 6 months after last activation.
2. You can deactivate your license on one machine and reactivate it on another machine at any time. The "Deactivate" button appears on the Activation/Registration window once your license is activated.
