Bjondc What are the differences between the free & paid versions? It appears that paid version will search your drive and enter ebooks into the library but that free version you have to do all the entry yourself -- is this correct? Are there other major differences?

Is there any export/reporting capability e.g. to produce a printed copy of your library "catalog"?

Yuriy Loza Blair,
Yes the paid version can scan your computer, update books from the web, provides File Manager for group operations with files

Tazzie I have been trying out Alfa, and still a bit puzzled as to how syncing would work. You said "Alfa supports access to the database over local network only if you attach the remote drive as local drive to the computer with Alfa installed" .... does this mean that I would just be able to access the database only if the computer I am using is connected to the network in some way? I am thinking in terms of when I want to take my netbook out of the house and no longer have access to the network. Does this mean I would have to export the database to the netbook in order to be able to use it when away from the network?

This would also mean, to my understanding of what you said, that if I added ebooks to the netbook to read, that they would not be added to the database unless I did it manually on the computer with the database. This scenario is not what I am looking for. I like Alfa and enjoyed trying it out, but I'm just not sure that I am willing to put in time and energy to manually keep a database up to data among several computers.

Brenda Adams For printed books: Can I import from list of ISBN's (.txt) as I can with other book programs? (I own a few thousands books and would not want to search up each, one-at-a-time.) I don't see this feature mentioned and it might be a deal-breaker for me. Need answer asap as deal time is down to a few hours left. Please.

Yuriy Loza Tazzie, make a right click on the folder where the database is located (on the other PC in your LAN) and click "map network drive"
Then you can open the database

You can copy the database to your netbook if you want to take it with you

Aug 15 2012 at 2:15am Copy Link

misho Hello Yurily,

I am an early adopter of your software since it was a free beta version and have been upgrading ever since.

I have a question - can I bulk organize a library of files which have the name of the book and the ISBN as a title of the file in the following format: titlexxxxxxx iisbnxxxx.pdf.

What I want is AEM to retrieve in bulk all the information available given the title and the ISBN and populate the info, rename the file according to a rule and place it in a directory.

I know it has all this functionality (and more), but I haven't figured out how to do this in bulk, and not file by file.

Best regards,

Mihail

I am also interested in the number of books it can handle... I have ~9000 ebooks and around 1000 paper books.

Thanks,

Eric

Yuriy Loza Paulo, we recommend to manage up to 20-30 thousand of books in one database. If you have more - you can split it to several databases

Mihail, in the Scan or File Parser tool you can set the box "Retrieve ISBN from book title". This will retrieve ISBN for your books. But the program won't remove ISBN from titles. You can use the bulk Web update to get clean titles by ISBN

Eric B, it can retrieve metadata from AZW files. 10 thousand books - is ok. Kindlean is not integrated with Alfa for now

Peter R, sorry but we provide the free version instead of trial

Brian H Hi Yuriy, this looks likes a very good program, and at a very reasonable price! I think the question that Paulo and Mihail (posts above) have is "is this program able to "auto-rename" Ebook file titles based on the metadata it is able to pull from the internet about a book?

Also- I have another question. The BDJ Policy tab does not say anything about product activation. Could you please comment on this ... what activation does the product require? Online? Hardware footprint? As someone who upgrades his computers/components fairly often, this can make a difference to me. Thanks. -Brian

Brian H, thanks! Yes the program can retrieve data from the Web and auto-rename books. The program doesn't require online activation. You'll be able to reinstall the program if you reinstall Windows or change PC

Yuriy Loza Brian H, if you mean renaming ebook files - you can set any template with any delimiter. But if you mean book titles in the database - Alfa can't rename them basing on template. It just can retrieve "clean" titles from the Web

Charlotte Sinclaire Your software looks lovely, but before purchasing, I wanted to compare it to another similar software I previously purchased, so I downloaded the trial.

However, upon attempting to install, I receive a message that says the software is not a valid 32-bit program, and the install will not proceed (plus there are two "CRC" errors upon unpacking -- I don't know what a "CRC error" is).

I am running a 32-bit machine. What are my alternatives? (Please answer ASAP as I am leaving the house shortly for the rest of the day and would like not to miss the deal if it is going to work out at all. Thanks much.)

Yuriy Loza Hi Norm, I used both :)
Of course, my comparison is not independent as I represent Alfa, but you can check my words yourself.
In general Alfa has better scan, web update, group editing, file management, library representation, search and filter tools. All the features that we liked in AllMyBooks - we have added to Alfa
Alfa.NetSoft - Apr 9 2013 at 11:25pm Copy Link
0
Norm Sash Thanks for the feedback, Yuriy, and also for the openness of identifying yourself as a non-independent response.

Sometimes it is the details in the way that a program operates that can make it easy or hard to use. From your response it appears you are saying that Alfa has all the best features of All My Books, and some improvements in the operation.

I'm certainly not asking you to bash All My Books, but since you have used both would you be willing to give an honest opinion in terms of ease of use for everyday tasks? Or are they both about the same?
Apr 10 2013 at 7:39am Copy Link
0
Yuriy Loza Norm,
If your everyday tasks are: find a book, view book data, add new book, than both programs are about the same. AllMyBooks - is quite simple program. But if the beauty of interface and advanced library management features count - I would honestly recommend Alfa ^)

Please let us know what is "pc system very delayed"?
Compared to Calibre, Alfa has more simple and beautiful interface and better integration with book sites. Calibre advantages - are metadata editing and file conversion

Charles Beauchamp Are there (meta) data links possible between Alfa Ebooks Manager, GooPatient and Kindlean?

If not, please consider developing them and also consider developing metadata links between these products and the Gruff Browser - www.franz.com.

If you developed the abiility to link metadata between your programs and with the Gruff Browser you would then have a way to link both patient specific data, ebook+ data with the universe of rdf file info "in the cloud" making this linkage a digital nirvana for patient care advocates. Also consider ways to fuse qualitative analysis notable metadata in the digital TEXT contents of e-books and RTF files with the Gruff Browser and GooPatient. And last but not least create the ability to link metadata and patient data with dtsearch - www.dtsearch.com.

RS The fine print indicates that upgrades are free for three months, but what about updates? The conventional definition of upgrade is to the next full version (in this case version 6), whereas updates are considered to be fixes and improvements within the current numbered version (every version of version 5). So are all updates within version 5 free without time restriction, and an upgrade to version 6 covered for three months? If so, it's a good deal at this price. If not, then three months is a clear departure from the standard year or more offered by the vast majority of other developers.

Per User If looking upon every piece of written work as an asset then Alfa Ebboks Manager organise your personal e-books perfect. In the end most of the e-books must be assigned a libary card by hand, though the fast "scan folder" option is a good starter for importing information or file tags already existing.
The 6.2.02 version on offer works on Vista with SP2, but not XP.
Alfa has internal viewers where I personally prefer to ask Alfa to invoks my default e-book viewers instead.
The organiser replicate many of the feelings I had when visiting our small-town library 50 years ago, and even more impressive as we now at our fingertips have immediate access to digital copies of real treasures.Though, the smell from then when visiting the library is missing. Therefore only 4 of 5 stars.

HJ B When I clicked on the "download trial" button, it brought me to the company website, where I was only given the option to download the free version. The site indicated that the free version has "with some functional limitations".

It turns out that the trial version has almost all functional limitations blocked. The result is that there is no real way to pre-test the program.

The "fine print" for the BDJ version says that there a "no return" policy.

In view of the amount of time and effort that would be involved in adding a substantial personal library to this program, the lack of a reasonably functional trial version and the no return policy are not acceptable.

RS Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't v6 Pro include reader and Web server functionality? Based on your current product descriptions, it appears that v7 Pro does not. If so, then how is version 7 Pro an upgrade? It seems that you separated these items, and are now marketing them separately at a higher cost, collectively. If there is a reason to upgrade, I'd be happy to, but it seems I'd be getting less than I have currently with v6 Pro, unless I make additional purchases in order to achieve the same. Please advise.

HJ B When I used the BDJ link it brought me to a place on the developer server that permitted me to download a trial file called aem.zip. As noted earlier, I installed that and all it produced was a significantly limited version of the program and did not permit any real testing.

You directed me to your home page, where I was permitted to download a "fullly functional" trial version. I installed it and it would not function and displayed the error message "trial expired". I uninstalled and reinstalled and got the same result.

RS As an owner of v6 of Alpha Books Pro, it is my understanding that v6 contained all the features of your current Web edition (v7). If so, why did you remove these many capabilities from v6 Pro while not reducing the price? Now, in order to get these same features, one has to pay significantly more for the Web edition. Will v8 remain the same as v7 in terms of these features you shifted from one edition to another?

Also, how does your AlfaReader, which costs an additional $5, compare with the ebook reader included with all editions of Alfa Ebooks Manager? Did you remove functionality from the v6 reader, like you did with Alfa Pro, in order to create an additional item for which you could charge?
Jul 31 2018 at 10:29am Copy Link

Yuriy Loza Yvonne Renfrew,
Alfa can import audiobooks only from your PC or usb drives. It can update audiobook data from Audible

RS
Actually we only changed version names, so the Pro version became Web and Premium became Pro. Their prices didn't changed. And we upgraded all Pro users to Web. For v8 we don't plan version name change.

AlfaReader is a standalone reader that can be used along with Alfa Ebooks Manager (containing built-in reader). The sense is that it allows to quickly open books without loading a big database of books.

tech club Do you have any plans on offering a lifetime upgrade option?.

I used to be a paid user from v3 up to v5, I stopped upgrading and switched to Calibre, because there were very few updates within each version, and it felt there was more interest on adding a new feature or just fixing a batch web scrapping issue and call it a new version, rather than improving an existing one.

There is no question Alfa is more beautiful and comfortable to use, this is why I was a paid user back then, but got tired of this virtually non-stop upgrade path to keep scrappers functional.
Jul 6 2019 at 7:29pm Copy Link
1
Yuriy Loza tech club, our major upgrades usually provide new features but not just fixes. Bug fixes are free and you can skip upgrade if you don't need the new features.

Regarding the web-scrappers. Websites like Amazon sometimes introduce new anti-scrapping protections and it can be very difficult to overcome it. Some other software just discontinued web-integrations, but we always managed to fix them. But we can't forecast the future and guarantee lifetime work of web-scrappers. So it's not fair to offer lifetime option.

HJ User Is there a pdf manual that describes the details of this program and its functions?

What does AEM expect to find in a the title and format of a book file, in order to populate the various fields of the program?

When AEM does a book lookup, to get the ISBN number, can it then use that number to populate otherwise vacant fields in the database?

Once AEM creates ITS database, is there a way that the user can use AEM to rename some or all of the original files in a consistent way, eg. title, author, publisher, date, ISBN (leaving the original file extension as it was).

I have a more general database program that works most well when it imports a text or csv file that is delimited by a tab. The AEM export feature does not provide for a tab delimiter. I suggest you add that capability.

Eric Yuriy,

Thanks, but ...

Both the use of the Android app and the suggestion you provide here assume the creation of an external list which is to be imported into the software.

While I have never used AEM, I assume that one can create entries one at a time ("Add a book ...") by entering the ISBN in a dedicated field.

What I am trying to find out is whether the said field can be filled-in only by typing its value on a keyboard, or also by getting its value from a barcode scanner.

In other words, use the barcode scanner directly in conjunction with the software, and not separate from it, along with -- say -- Notebook, to create lists that are to be imported into the software's repository.

Repeated thanks for your attention to this matter,

Eric

Christopher Dean @Eric,

I have an older Wasp barcode reader. It's a USB scanner that acts like a keyboard. In other words, I can scan in the ISBN code from the physical book and it will fill in the ISBN field of AEM as if it were being typed in. Works great. After that, you simply do a web update on the newly added book to fill in the rest of the details and you're good to go.

Hope this is helpful.

Thanks,
Christopher

RS I purchased this app and two version upgrades over the past several years. While there are some good things in the software, and a potential for much more, there hasn't been an update in almost a year, and the developer is not responsive to feedback and implementation concerns.

More than two years ago, I brought to his attention that the built-in audiobook player--touted as part of its audiobook features--has a serious issue that causes severe pitch distortion when the user speeds up playback, making the feature unusable. Other audiobook players have found a way to allow users to increase playback speed and correct for pitch frequency. While the developer responded with a single sentence acknowledging the problem and indicating that he would "try to fix" it, the issue still exists and I never heard from him again.

I was hoping that this title would address a shortfall of Calibre by allowing the user to manage ebooks and audiobooks in one app. However, if it is going to do so and market itself as such, then the audiobook features must work as they should, and the developer must be willing to resolve issues that are brought to his attention.

Yuriy Loza RS sorry we use third party library for audio book player, and it's not easy to fix it
Alfa.NetSoft - Mar 1 2022 at 11:34am Copy Link

RS Yuriy I understand; however, I've sampled several other players that don't have this problem, so I would suggest that you look into alternative third-party players. And, given that more than two years have passed since I identified the issue, it isn't reasonable to expect users to accept that a major feature for audiobooks isn't usable with no prospect of a resolution. If you are unable or unwilling to make a change, then I would submit that you should eliminate this feature, and stop advertising it as a reason to purchase the app. I would also suggest that, rather than ignore the issue, a developer should maintain a dialogue with users who contact you with issues and concerns.

RS Yuriy The audio player is largely what makes the app an integrated audiobook manager, and would cause users to move from Calibre to Alfa in order to consolidate their digital books in all formats. However, if you are not going to fix the problem, then you should remove the feature to change the speed of playback entirely.

In any event, it is clear you have far greater priorities, given the unprovoked invasion of your nation by Russian forces. I have watched the news coverage in horror, but also with enormous admiration for the courage exhibited by your people in defending their homeland against attack. You are in my prayers, and it is my sincere hope that the world will continue to rally to your cause. Your fight is not only your own, it is ours, given the danger such provocation poses to the West and the forces of democracy if this aggression is allowed to stand. It is in the interest of all free nations of the world to assist Ukraine in this time of need. If not, the threat will expand, and other nations will find themselves subject to similar threats and intimidation in the future. Godspeed.

PatrickB Hi,
Bought it more than 3 years ago, it is an excellent and pleasant to use "paper" library management program.
Very pleasant aesthetics.
Its drawbacks:
- no android application (it's a shame, and it would be very useful in the future)
- and little evolution since more than 3 years (date of my purchase), but as it lacks only a few things, it doesn't bother me much.
