Gary Smith I initially looked forward to seeing this program go live on Bitsdujour. In the meantime, I attempted to find out if it was worth it.

This program claims to uninstall "Stubborn Programs and Files." I understand un-installing programs, for files, I understand removal/deletion, but un-installing a file does not make sense to me. I suppose it is meant to mean removal of files that are left over by a program's default uninstaller. The "stubborn" part is a bit confusing, but I suppose it also refers to items left behind after a regular uninstall. The only programs that I would consider stubborn would be malicious programs that do not have regular uninstallers, and often create other executables making it more difficult to find and remove. The simplest method is to clean these drives when the OS is not booted from it. That is a totally difference scenario anyway. I see nothing that indicates this program helps in these situations.

This program looks most like an "Uninstaller" program, such as Revo Uninstaller, and others. Many of the popular "Uninstaller" programs are priced less than the $24.97 shown here today, including the Uninstallers that are totally free, or the free versions of a program such as Revo Uninstaller. On top of that, you do not have to pay a free in a year (for what is not clear in this case). Before the answer was posted to a user question, the amount to pay after a year was not on Bitsdujour or on the developer's website.

The developer states that their online databases are constantly updated, which contains a list of updated versions of programs you already have (so this program can inform you that an updated version exists), lists of programs considered as CrApp programs, and a database contains a list of alternative programs that you could use instead of a program you currently have or have considered purchasing.

There is no indication that the Uninstaller functions of this program depend on the online databases. Un-installing a program is a lot simpler if you know what it did during its install and while executing, but if that information is not known, looking for references with the program name is not a guaranteed way of finding everything the program left behind. There is no indication that this program tracks installs to know what to uninstall later. I asked the question on their website but did not receive a reply.

The Updated versions feature is of limited value:
There are many cases where a program cannot be updated without breaking a license agreement (as many free versions offered here and on similar sites). Most modern programs today have a built-in "Check for Update" feature, and some will also allow you to download and install any new updates with a single click. In the case of purchased programs, if the update requires a payment, likely a user will hear from the developer when an update is available. Also, there are alternative programs that do the same thing as this feature for free. Many of the programs that perform this function are building a database of what users have installed for who knows what use in the future.

The list of CrApps feature is of minor value:
It doesn't take too long to recognize a CrApp program. Perhaps this feature is a segue into the Alternative Programs Database.

Alternative Database Feature is also of limited use:
The Alternatives Database is to suggest an alternative programs to ones that you have installed already or are considering purchasing. The same information is commonly provided in many websites. Free alternatives will be things like Notepad++, LibreOffice, etc. For any program you have already paid for, most users chose the paid-for version for a reason, and likely also have the alternative free ones installed as well. If you don't know what alternatives are available, it is easy enough to do a Google search and come up with alternatives to many programs, and there are a couple websites that do a pretty good job of doing the same.

I have a lot of free programs, open source programs, and also a lot of paid-for programs. The paid-for program were purchased because they provided something that no alternative provided. This program (AppFalcon) could be an example of a program I would purchase if the price were right and it provided something that the alternatives do not. Thus far, I do not see that it provides enough value for the cost.

I would like to see true comparisons of this program with the alternative Uninstallers. If anyone can point to a valid test comparison, I would like to see it. Therefore, there needs to be a very good explanation as to the value of this program to convince potential buyers to fork over their money.

In a year when the subscription runs out for this program, if there is not an alternative to AppFalcon in their database, it may be because we didn't need it in the first place.

Let's start with the clarifications.

The title "Stubborn Programs and Files." is a little confusing about the files and I think it is because the authors of BitsDuJours wanted to summarize what was written on our website (at the top).

You are absolutely right! In an ideal case, we do not need any uninstaller or file remover at all because each program has its built-in uninstaller that removes everything program has created and you should be able to delete any file by just pressing a button. In a real-world scenario, this is not the case. There are many uninstallers, free and paid, there are many file unlockers, removers, cleaners, etc, and they are used by millions of users (check the download numbers of such programs). Why is that? Because there are hundreds of thousands of programs that are not perfect. They are improved with each version. You can see the version history of your favorite programs and notice how many bugs are fixed each time a new version is released.

A program is any executable file that runs on the system. That program can be installed, which means that it is copied to specific locations suggested by the documentation of the operating system. For example, Microsoft Windows developer documentation suggests installing all executables in Program Files folder, program settings per user in Windows Registry HKEY_CURRENT_USER, temporary files in TEMP folder, data files in UserData. Outdated programs (mostly free) do not follow all the new guidelines or the developer has "a better" idea that fits. A program is installed mainly because it has many files and needs to save internal/temporary data to files. All those files are packed in one file, setup file, to make the life of the user easier - click install and next, next to complete the system specific installation tasks (copying files to appropriate locations). Many programs are using modules or are dependent on components written by the same or other publishers. For example, almost all video converters and editors are using FFMPEG library (DLL files). Components can be loaded into memory and executed. Some are shared between programs.

Here comes the challenge for the developers. On program uninstall do the following:
- stop the running processes belonging to the program - stopping may fail due to lots of reasons, privileges, security programs asking if it is ok or not, wrong stop command because the program is updated but the built-in uninstaller is not, developer forgot to put a "/k" option, etc.
- unload the components and libraries - check if they are shared, if they are shared then do not delete; if deleted the other programs could stop working
- delete created registry settings of the program
- delete registry settings created by the components - check if they are shared - this could break other programs
- restore all changed registry settings to the initial state - this is tricky because which is the initial state after installing 3 different programs for the same task - how do we know which program the user will prefer to use after removing our program

The list continues, we've seen so many reasons for program uninstalling failures. The point is that there are many things that could go wrong during an uninstall process. Developers test their programs if they work when installed and not much if other similar programs will stop working if their program was uninstalled. The others are competitors after all - they should take measures for such scenarios, they may think.

So, uninstallers should know how to deal with this kind of scenarios and only very few of them are doing a decent job (do not look for free ones).

Very popular and widely used program could become stubborn because another little program when uninstalled has deleted some of the components of that program. Malicious programs are also stubborn programs. AppFalcon can delete such programs before they have a chance to be loaded or executed! Yes, before they have a chance to be loaded or executed. AppFalcon also can search and detect all related registry data to this kind of programs. So not only unlocking a file and deleting it but also deleting all registry related data.

AppFalcon does this seamlessly - the user want's to uninstall a program -> AppFalcon does what it needs to be done. AppFalcon might connect to our online database and get additional info which files and registry keys of that program should be removed (for known stubborn and problematic programs), but does not indicate that is doing that kind of things - it shows: Deep scanning...

About tracking programs. AppFalcon currently does not trace an installation of programs but it will in the future. Tracing is good but needs additional actions from the users i.e. start/stop tracking, etc. We are working on ways to improve this. Another thing about tracing is that it does not solve the problems I've mentioned above. AppFalcon with its online database is able to do a better job when the problem occurs even if you haven't used it at all before i.e. lots of people are looking to solve a problem after its occurrence and do not bother to use tracking or any program before that.

About software updates. You are right, lots of programs have update checking features but not many check regularly for updates. You have to run that program to see that there are any updates. So what? According to studies (i.e. from Global Information Security Workforce, which Avira states), 72% of zero-day vulnerabilities are because of outdated software. AppFalcon aims to support the largest database of updates and currently outperforms lots of paid updaters. We want to deliver value even with one update on the right time!

About alternatives. AppFalcon does not suggest only free alternatives or just popular alternatives. We make an extensive research and comparison. The user might easily find the popular programs but there are many categories that it is very hard to make a good choice. i.e. pdf editor and converter - lots of free offers, and online solutions on the first Google results but if you try them you will see that they are not as free as advertised, they have limitations and the user pays with time or money because he has already spent a lot of time for one of them. There are good ones that are paid but do what the user wants from the first time. The user might know about some of the programs but it is hard to know best programs in lots of categories and research/try out each time you need something. AppFalcon will show a notification if it has a better alternative when you try the first program so you will save time and hassle.

About the CrApps, there are many paid programs that do not bring any value but they sell a lot. A none tech-savvy user may be convinced to buy them and here is the value of AppFalcon - it shows that it is a CrApp and you do not need that app, so do not buy it no matter what it says (critical errors, 20GB free space, memory boost, etc).
