Software Babe Maria, I am an SE and I have used KC's software products and I personally have had no problem with them. Can you be more specific about your comments. I know you said the free versions are full of adware, but what makes the company untrustworthy? Can you provide proof? THANKS!

Questions:
1) Why not the most current version?

Please clarify.

Louis H A Review.....

Downloaded without any problems. Installed without difficulty. Version number is 2.3.1.40.

Entered Registration Info from Email - which came almost immediately - using BitsDuJour for the "Name" entry, then the Registration_Code via copy and paste, and program recognized it without any difficulty. It did add three shortcut icons to other products from KC Software to my desktop. These were easily deleted and I cannot find any other changes, other than involved with the actual program itself.

AVIToolbox would not recognize ANY of the AVI files I tried to edit with it.

Phase 1 - troubleshooting.

I downloaded KC's free VideoInspector program and it tells me that I have the proper codecs for Audio but not for Video. I hit the "Download" button to find out about the codecs it requires - "Sony Digital Video" - and it directs me to Sony's site - where there is no link for downloading such codec. I go to the Sony forums and find someone else who ended up there, after using Videoinspector, seeking the same codec. They were encouraged to try MediaInfo - a different utility for assessing video and audio files - in an effort to find more in-depth info. End result from the forum there was not all that helpful. They never did help the person seeking such a codec, find it.

SideNote: While KC Software's VideoInspector says the Video Codec is not installed, when I hit the "Play" button in it, the video was loaded and played without problems. There are links at the VideoInspector info page for downloading Codec Packs, but I have learned over the years that it is best to only install the actual codecs you need. When I installed such "packs" in the past, I ended up with far more problems then were resolved.

Phase 2

I download Mediainfo and install it. Malwarebytes identified and blocks "PUP.optional.opencandy." (MediaInfo did not give me any option to install or reject any "sponsors.") It identifies the codec as Sony as well. (The individual I mentioned in the Sony Forum was given a different missing codec. That is why I tried Mediainfo to see if it saw my files the same as VideoInspector. It did.)

Phase 3

File plays in the various players I have installed. It also loads and plays in Sony (!!!) Vegas Pro. Adobe Premiere Pro. Wondershare Video Editor. Photoshop as a Video file. Photodex Proshow. And a few other simple editors I keep around.

Phase 4

Uninstalled program as it cannot identify and load my .avi files and that is the only type of file it works with. I spent more time than any benefit I might get from this program in seeking a solution. I see no point in investing any additional time as I have other programs that do recognize my .avi files and can do all (and more) than this program offers.

I am always looking out for utilities that can assist with quick edits of files, but since it will not recognize my .avi files, and without being able to use this program for other video file types, it is unusable for me.

Nonetheless, I do appreciate both BDJ and KC Software for making this program available for Free.

As to the claim that was made about "adware," If you download programs from their download page...

http://www.kcsoftwares.com/?download

....there is a little chart near the top that uses icons to clearly tell you which type of downloads have "sponsors" and which files have no "sponsors." Only two products appear to not have a "no sponsors" download available. So thumbs up to this company for clearly letting you know you might be getting an offer from a "sponsor," and offering download alternatives with no sponsors included. There is also a note at the top of the above page that tells you, if you choose one of the file versions that do contain "sponsors," these offers can be rejected while installing the software. The file I downloaded from BDJ today did not contain ANY "sponsors."

Richard Hmm... On the website it shows two versions. A paid version for $99 and a free version.

So the lite version that is on the website for free is priced at $14.99 here and then given away for free to give us a "great deal" ??

On the website it also shows the install including "sponsors". Is that just ads in the software or does it include toolbars and who knows what else?

Ron O'Dell This is "AVIToolbox Lite" as Rod Hogarth posted. I cannot get it to load any videos. Yes, they are AVI videos and it says "Check Video Codecs" and when I click on the link it takes me to http://www.kcsoftwares.com/?vtb. There I get this message "This page can't be displayed".

I suggest that you do not bother with downloading this rip-off.

Free Ride @Ron O'Dell
AVIToolbox is AVIToolbox, there is no difference between free and registered version besides nag screen and premium support. Lite has nothing to do with program functionality, i would suggest you visit the following site and read the top: http://www.kcsoftwares.com/?download

The program seems just too picky regarding the codec, i guess only the developer knows what exact AVI files with what exact codec work with the software (only one specific i assume). Honestly, it never worked for me in the past and i saw and tried it so often in so many Giveaways, it never improved in functionality and was pretty much useless for any AVI file i feeded to it because those files always failed to load somehow and the codec wasn't anything special or rare, just pretty common. It's like having a video converter and XviD isn't supported.

I thought i may give it another go but after reading the new comments i gave up on it.

Brad @ Richard

The $99 purchase price you referred to is not for the AVIToolbox by itself. The $99 purchase price includes multiple programs of which AVITool Box is inclusive among this group of software applications. The programs included in the $99 offer are:

K-MP3, PhotoToFilm, ApHeMo, AVIToolbox, K-ML, K-FTP, K-Mail.

Clicking the Buy Button takes you to a clarifying link where your $99 purchase is identified as a "Premium Pack license". So I don't think there was any intent to mislead Bitster's, I think it was a cross marketing effort to get you to consider a package deal that includes AVITool Box.

The AVIToolbox does indeed apparently when purchased by itself normally cost $14.99.

As a secondary thought, I too was somewhat confused by the "lite" designation when I saw the name of the download file. I wondered if this "free" or "lite", AVItool Box was a stripped down version of a more robust software application, but apparently it is not according to comments of @Free Ride above, he states "AVITool Box is AVITool Box.

To: All

So the question I have is, Does the "Free" Version here offered on BisduJour, is it the same "Free" version designated on the KC Software's web site. Said "Free" Version on the developers web site, states that it "DOES NOT" come with Premium Support. Or to put it another way, if I take the "Free" version here on BitsDuJour, is this the same as if we had paid $14.99 which of course would mean that the offer DOES INCLUDE Premium Support, this according to the developers web site.

I would think that this offer ought to include premium support, as the promotion by inference implies such, by placing the qualifier that this application normally costs $14.99. Wheh! excuse the verbosity.

Gary Smith I tried it but nearly every video I tried to load, it reported "File is too big. Maximum file size is 2G", so it can only be used for smaller files. Generally, the program attempts to access a part of memory that is not allowed. The error messages are in French, so not useful for a program that has an English interface. If an error is not displayed, the program just disappears (total crash without an error). The program is the level of a high school programming class project that someone thought they could make money with. After any editing the user can "Save" the result, but the save never finishes, but instead, reports "FileOpen failed. Err: $8004406F (C:\Mes programmes\Delphi\AVIToolbox\U_AVIExtractor.pas, ligne 202). Why a file open error on a save? Sometimes when a video file is attempted to open, the program simply disappears. Restarting and attempting to open the same file displayed a programming code error. Odd that it is not consistent with the same file. Sometimes the error is not a program coding error, just that the program cannot successfully open the file. A typical error is "Unable to extract frame", with a button labeled Check Video Codecs. When the button is clicked, it leads to the home website where VideoInspector is another one of the programs. I have seen that program before. During its install process, it attempts to install 3 pieces of extra software not related to the program (malware), such as a program that takes over your homepage, and search choices. You are offered the option of Skip, and one of them still threw up a popup telling how wonderful it would be to have this extra software installed, giving me one more chance to reconsider. The extras that are attempted to install vary each time even for the same program, so what you get offered probably will be different. After the install, VideoInspector shows what codec the video has been encoded with, and whether that codec is installed or not. I had one that showed the codec was not installed. Since VideoInspector is made by the same person as AVIToolbox, why not have that feature in AVIToolbox? When the codec is not currently in the list of installed codecs, then a "Download" button takes you to website that has several codecs available for download. The site has no search, so it can be a tedious procedure to see if the codec you need is available to download. I found a Google search was faster. After installing a codec, the program has to be restarted to recognize it. When a video is loaded with a known codec into AVIToolbox, the user can use a slidebar to move around or a menu option to go a number of frames, or even a single frame (all forward or backward). There isn't a shortcut to any of these menu options, so if you want to use the single step, it is a tedious process to go back to the menu for each frame step (shortcuts please). Clicking on Help hopefully to learn of possible shortcuts go to the home website where a Help page with "Demos" displayed: Demos and Frequently Asked question SEE FIRST : Getting Started with AVIToolbox <---- explains top menu only How can I trim a video file ? How can I extract sound track ? How can I extract a picture ? How can I get technical info. about the file i'm working on ? Only the first option is a link. It is to a short display video of the top menu choices. That is it. None of the other "How can I" items are answered. Only the one you can pretty much figure out anyway is "demoed." Since I was not able to complete even the simplest edits and save the results, I cannot tell how long the process takes to get a guess on whether it re-encodes or knows how to join without encoding. Sadly, the PR for this program is like it is a single answer for all your editing issues. Instead of using multiple programs, use only one, the AVIToolbox. That part I like and will be doing as there are several alternatives that do exactly that.

Jim User I remember this program now !!! I couldn't register it then and I can't register it now. As Bill User says " Registration goes to website irrelevant page" It tells me nothing about how to register and yet it says it is registered to Bits. Activation serial number is useless if one can not find a place to put it in.

After it installing a few items to my desktop, I'll just go ahead and get rid of the whole thing.

Rick Truell Software Babe: "Why not create a toolbox that does ALL video/audio formats?"

Try 'avidemux' ( http://avidemux.sourceforge.net/ ). Of all the things mentioned above and in the promo copy, the only thing I'm unsure of avidemux being able to do is image capture, but there is an option in the 'file' menu to 'save to image', so that might do it.

I've never actually edited an avi file with it, but given that its name is "avi"demux, it can probably edit them. All I've ever edited are .mpg files, and I've never had a problem...and it saves the new file *without* re-encoding either the audio or video.

Avidemux is free all the time, can be installed anytime and is available for Windows, Linux and Mac.

CFGuy Hi - Sad that neither software rep or BDJ seems to be online fielding questions today. :-( Richard - I am not sure, but would suspect this is for the "pro" (non-free) version. Otherwise why even bother with license data. Hope that someone decides to show up soon to address our questions - the clock is ticking ... -CFGuy

Constantin Florea @Jack User, Please ensure that you use the correct registration name (not your own name) from the receipt email.

Jack User I used BitsDuJour as instructed. I don't need it. I test software as a hobby in my retirement years and sometime use them. This one failed. End of story.
