What are people saying about Axialis IconWorkshop Professional

Dick Oz Tried it and seems like an interesting,  full featured product. I have 2 questions. Why is smoothing only available for win XP icons? I'd like to produce a few Palm webOS icons, that OS supports 64x64 , 24 bit+Alpha channel icons.

Secondly if I insert for example some objects like rectangulars, ellipses and a paste from the clipboard, how do I move or edit the first and second object? I don't see a select object.

Marc EMILE Hello,

Thanks for your interest in our product!

1/ The smoothing option works only with RGBA images (32 bits) because they contain an alpha channel. This additional 8-bit channel permits creating smooth effects like shadows or non-pixelated borders. If you want to a make smooth 24-bit image, I recommend that you first create a RGBA image to build the icon using the objects, then produce automatically the 24-bit image from it. A built-in feature permits to create additional formats from existing ones.

2/ Once an object is added to the icon, as long as it is in selected mode, you can move and adjust it over the background image. Once it's applied (unselected), it's merged in the icon. Layers will be implemented in next version soon. They will fix this problem. Note that our Lifetime License permits you to update for free to any future versions.

Marc

S B This looks quite nice. 1) How does IconWorkshop compare with Microangelo? 2) Is there a discount on the IconWorkshop/CursorWorkshop bundle? 3) When do you expect a release with layers and Visual Studio 2010 support? Thank you!

Marc EMILE Hello, 1/ Microangelo supports cursor creation. IconWorkshop has numerous additional features. The interface is totally different (Microangelo has 4 separate programs, IconWorkshop has a fully integrated workspace). An independent feature-comparison can be found here: http://icon-editing-softw...index.html 2/ No, sorry. 3/ Layers are expected early 2011 in v7.0. Visual Studio 2010 is supported in 6.52 (a problem with some configurations prevents the IconWorkshop icon to appear in the VS toolbar - this will be fixed next week in 6.53) Regards, Marc

S B After looking at IconWorkship and reading several reviews, it has become clear that IconWorkshop has surpassed and is now probably much better than the old leader in this category, Microangelo. In the past, I've used yet another product, not nearly as nice, professional, or powerful as IconWorkshop. Axialis Software has been modest: TopTenReviews.com has awarded IconWorkshop #1 in its category ("Anyone can use this application to create dynamic and unique icons. All of these functional features combined with a great price, makes this product the best on the market."), and CNET says "[not quick and dirty, but] If, however, you're in need of a full-featured program that will let you take your icon-making to the next level, this is the program for you. We've reviewed a lot of icon creation software, and Axialis IconWorkshop is definitely the most professional of the bunch." There's also an active Community Forum which seems to have a lot of happy users. (There are useful answers to questions, but the Community Forum does have a troll) Count me in.

Michael K There seems to be an error in the BitsDuJour headline price of $99.95 for this product.

Axialis's full price for IconWorkshop is in fact $69.95 which by my calculation should make the BitsDuJour offer price $24.50.

Could this be verified and confirmed please.

german only? Hello, I had been electrified by the good price here, since in reviews, Axialis is considered the best icon software out there among those normal ones (i.e. not costing 1,000 dollars or such).

Unfortunately, in trying the trial, I see that you force the GERMAN version upon me, for the only reason that, very unfortunately, I've got a german win xp version. All the help files are in English - very good - but the program is in german, and I certainly don't want to have to work with such german crap forced upon me. So I searched the help file for "language", but nothing, I searched the menus for language options, again nothing - did I overlook something? I went to your site in order to ask you there, but was informed that any help was only for customers having bought already.

So I'll have to buy, just for being told afterwards, with my money lost, that "unfortunately", there is no way to go back to the original english version, once the german crap is installed? That cannot be it.

So please comment.

The same problem, with some web sites: They detect your XP language version and then force their german crap site version upon you, and go back to it again and again - bye, bye, then.

But since Axialis seems to be the best normal icon software, I don't want to give up that easy.

So, clarification please, but let me tell you that forcing languages other than english upon customers is a VERY bad idea, in general.

no collecting function? I'd like to add that I've found the language option; some automatically named folders are named in german now nethertheless but be it, they can be renamed.

I've done some icons now and am very pleased, so it's really a very good icon EDITOR, and I'll buy it for that.

But please, tell me why there isn't but a rudimentary import function? Or did I overlook the better part of it? What I'm searching for, is a software component that will automatically SEARCH given folders on my systems for icons that are already there, in order for me to choose from them and to work on them, in case, or just to collect them into a new special folder where to have them together.

I'm dreaming of an icon program that can thus collect AND edit icons, not having to buy, and especially, to handle, TWO different programs for that. "Workshop" instead of "Editor" seemed to integrate both functions, but the collecting function is NOT integrated into Axialis, right?

Again, it's not a show stopper for me, but it's a point I'm unhappy with, and most users need both functions, I suppose, like I do, editing AND collecting.

If there are such functions, please tell me under which terms in the help file I must search for term; "import" it's not.

Marc EMILE Hello,

The product contains 3 built-in languages: English, French and German for menus and dialogs (the Help file is in English only). At first launch, the appropriate language is selected based on the Windows settings. If your Windows language is different, the English version is chosen.

You can change the language that is automatically selected (in your case German) by opening the Preferences dialog box (press F2, General tab) and choose "English" as language.

About the "collecting" feature, I recommend that you try the "Find on the computer" function. This will find and display all the icons on your computer (or a specific folder tree). Then you'll be able to select and import them in the Axialis Librarian. Hope that helps.

Yes, I do confirm the LIFETIME LICENSE. Pay once, update forever.

Marc

Fred X Hi Marc,

Thank you very much for your kind answer; indeed, there is EDIT - FIND - ON YOUR COMP, but then, problems start. Please let me say that your attitude and the program's features, including the graphic aspect, modern and neat, are of highest value, so I'm writing early in order to give you time to find answers, since I'd like very much to opt for YOUR program, above any competitor; I'm not writing here in order to harm your biz, on the contrary. So if there ain't solutions for now, your word on giving them later (cf. the lifetime license) will suffice for me in order to buy, AND to encourage anybody here for also buying.

a )

Since I didn't had found the collecting component, I searched the web. In fact, there are two valuable resources (that I found, that is):

http://www.donationcoder..../index.php

That's from 2006, so beware of enhancements being made everywhere (I hope) in the meantime, but Axialis comes first there, and they give valuable reasons that seem to hold steady now, 5 years later.

And then there is:

http://icon-editing-softw...index.html

which seems to be more or less up-to-date, and where Axialis, again, is rated first, and they give rather detailed reviews on each of the tested softwares.

b )

Second in the last-mentioned site is Icon Craft, from Canada; its look is much less modern and neat than Axialis' to say the least.

But then, where's Sib in that latter comparative review? Indeed I had found Sib "on my own", in the web, and thus am really "spoiled" with the finest (?) search-your-comp feature I can imagine.

Well, Sib (from Russia, but then, I use several other eastern software, HK, Hot Keyboard, among them, featuring goodies I did never ever found elsewhere) seems to be more or less identical with Icon Craft, compare the two websites and the programs featured there:

www.iconempire.com

and

www.sibcode.com

As for Sib, you must know that they have split up their product Sib Icon Studio (about 40 dollars) into many inferior products (about 20 dollars each) that can do parts of what Studio can do, but it seems that Studio is the real thing doing it all; and this Sib Icon Studio then seems to correspond, more or less, to Ican Craft (50 dollars now).

Of course, the Russian website is a mess, and the similarity between the Russian and the Canadian site is another one; on top of this, Sib is mentioned in web reviews that state that they "sell" their Editor as freeware when in fact it seems to be shareware; let alone the different pricing for a seemingly (almost) identical (?) product

c ) All these findings are not points building up prospects' confidence - whereas Axialis is on the very opposite of such behavior, and there isn't any doubt that A's editing features are outstanding from any crowd there is, including Sib, etc., or not.

d )

Before having tried the search function in Axialis (A), I had tried the one in Sib Icon Studio (SIS). So let me explain:

In SIS, searching took some minutes; I optioned for ("Don't do doubles); I then got 7,500 icons, neat in one screen (= extracted from their different files of multiple type), and I then could select individual icons in order to work on them; of course, this happens in a GUI that seems to be 20 years old, quite the opposite of A's one.

Then, I tried A for the same purpose; there was NO option to pass over doubles, so I couldn't check such an option.

The search only took several seconds, and gave 20,000 results (including about 14,000 doubles, I suppose - this being the first task A has to address in my opinion).

e )

But then, automatically, a loading process started (we are in A here, for the casual reader), that took many minutes, before crashing the program. (I've got XP 3 with 2 GB but with enough space on the harddisk that was indeed heavily addressed for many, many minutes before A crashed.)

OK, I restarted A, and this time, I did not option for "all allowed files" (I'm citing from memory here, so the exact denominations vary but the facts do not), but for "Icon Files Only", but again, my harddisk c:

Well, this time, I got about 250 results...! I wasn't happy with such a basic result,

f )

so I reverted to "All possible files", but this time (= in order to avoid another crash with 20,000 results), I selected the c:\windows directory only.

As before, the search in itself took some seconds only, and brought some 5-, 6- or 7,000 results (in fact it was that range but I've forgotten), and then, as before, it took many minutes (on my dated comp, that is) for all those files loading, but WITHOUT crashing this time.

So, after some 15 minutes, I had 5- or 7,000 files automatically loaded, and those files were on the screen, or perhaps a lot less, I don't know (= I'm not going to count manually thousands of files on my screen), but then, containing that number, 5-7,000, of ICONS in those files.

g )

Why can't I be precise, here? Because here, the real second problems with A became evident: On screen, I did NOT have the actual icons, or then, in case, thumbnails of the actual images (= from which then, in A, icons can be made), but, as said, icons or symbols for the (dll and other) FILES in which those icons are originally stored.

Thus, I had to click on those symbols, WITHOUT knowing of those clicks were fruitful or not, but imagine such a manual search within hundreds or thousands of such files, each of which you then must click on in order to see what it contains?! Forget it!

h )

And even, my "collection" contained many, many - a majority, perhaps, of? - such files where there was, indeed, an inscription in the symbol "no icon", which then spared me to have to click on the symbol in order to see for myself... but then, there was no way to get rid of such symbols, cluttering my collection of more worthwile files, but manually; doing this for hundred if not thousands of them, again, forget it!

So why they are included? I suppose, they are included for the symbol itself, in case you might want to use that, and that's perfectly understandable, but those symbols were mostly doubles, triples, quadruples, quintuples...

Thus, here again, an option like "pass over doubles if they don't contain not-doubles" seems to be mandatory in order for this A's function becoming useful.

i )

And then, the signet "(= contains) no icons", what does it mean, exactly, in case you have selected the option "all possible files" and are perhaps searching for images OTHER than icons that could be contained in those files, but that could be made INTO icons, by A's means?

Can you be sure, than, that such files don't contain any OTHER element neither, than ready-made icons, that could be useful for you, if the signet over the symbol says "no icons"? Doubtful; another thing to clarify and to amend.

j )

In fact, I understand A's approach to display the original files, and to make you to click on their symbols, in order to access the containing icons or other useful elements in them, but the very least measure to apply in order for this concept being acceptable would be some hover function and the introduction of an additional pane / frame, by which measure you would be able to just hover the mouse over such a file symbol, in order to immediately see the contained icons or elements-to-possibly-become-icons-with-A's-help; having to click on every one of thousands of symbols, in order to have displayed, only then, the contained elements, in the SAME frame, and to have then, logically, to do thousands of Alt-F4 in order to get rid of all those thousands of useless frames "containing nothing" (= containing nothing or containing nothing useful in your case, that is), is simply not doable.

SiS, by the way, simply puts all those 7,500 icons (but only icons?) in ONE frame, one after another, but then, by hovering the mouse over the symbols / icons there, you can see the complete path of the icon in question, including the "container" file, i.e. the only symbol you can see in A, without clicking without knowing if you get something valuable, or if you get "nothing", there...

k )

It seems to me that SIS' approach is the only practical one for general purposes, while A's approach could perhaps be helpful, on top of that, for very special purposes; thus, A should adopt SIS' approach as soon as possible (= in order for its users not having mandatorily use another program in order to build up a collection of their available icons), and retain its current approach by option.

Of course, all this being said subject to my possible misunderstanding / not-having-found of appropriate A functions.

l )

In the meanwhile, I took my icon collection built up by SIS ("xyz.icc"), but which is not importable into A (?).

Copying an icon there, and then importing it into A, gives nothing (?): control-c there and control-v doesn't work as you'd expect.

But then, in SIS, out of this frame containing thousands of them from various sources, you can save each icon in the standard icon format, and then you can open that icon file within A, in order to edit, in order to make collections, and so on...

But after all, it would NOT be honest - and be illegal, on top of that! - to use the trial version of a competing product, SIS, in order just to fill up the deficiencies of the product you bought, A... and buying SIS, at 40 dollars, in order to be able to use then A Prof, at 35 dollars, would seem weird to me, to say the least.

Some people, e.g. yesterday's Movie Outline staff, are advice-resistant, if not advice-proof; you seem to belong to another class, as all the other functions of your fine program seem to strongly indicate; thus, the adequate developments should be envisageable on medium term? Is "within a year" a realistic time horizon?

So now you.

Marc EMILE Hello Fred,

Thank you very much for your impressive extended test on this feature as well as your interesting suggestions based on SIS.

Yes, we're very interested in improving this feature (with your help maybe?). The way SIS manage it is indeed much more convinient. In addition we have to admit that this feature has not been originally designed to deal swiftly with several 1000s of icons. This must be improved to be more efficient and easier to use. We add this to the to-do list for next major release 7. Please contact me to discuss further about this feature enhancement (see contact form on the Axialis website).

About the ability to copy/paste between SIS and IconWorkshop, I'm not surprised that it doesn't work. The icon images contains tranparency information that each software stores using its own method in the Clipboard. So this is not cross-software compatible. The same goes for Photoshop-to-Axialis.

Marc

Overtkill Per the license question, according to "the fine print" just above:

Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for the lifetime of the product.

TBH, I'll have to pass on this, I use Photoshop CS6 as a professional, and after review, this is something that seems more tailored for beginners. I was looking for something quick and easy for my own use.

Thanks for bringing the offer to us. :)
Oct 12 2013 at 8:56am Copy Link

ron r Yes I saw the "fine print" but in the past with other vendors I encountered some "confusion" about updates and upgrades. There are still software vendors who see upgrades the same as updates and just "use" the term upgrade.

That's why I specifically mentioned major upgrades + 1.0 to 2.0 etc... to avoid misunderstanding.

About photoshop, I use many graphic tools and as good photoshop is, it is not geared towards creating icons. A good Icon editor has helpful tools that can help making icons a faster and more effective.

Photoshop is an photo-editor (extremely flexible), icon editors in general have the option to open .exe / .dll's and such for icon resources. The interface in icon editors in general allow an icon-edit centric enviroment (multiple versions of the icons open, etc...)

In this icon editor I saw "Image Strips for toolbars" among other interesting options like the bridge between visual studio.
And photoshop has one other major dis-advantage, it costs a lot and it does not have the option to upgrade for free (pay once). But the powerful nature of the software grants the high price and licensing.

Another thing is that tools like these are more system friendlier and often can run portable (=less strain on system).

And the image library (http://www.axialis.com/objects/)is welcome as I can use it in my commercial projects (if allowed?) although I can design EVERYTHING from scratch often you do not have to waste time waste time, I can offer projects cheaper because I can give my clients the option for me to use legally ready resources in stead of designing them from scratch (which I can do) thus speeding up the project and be able to offer lower prices.

If objects are available which let's you quickly assemble icons it can speed my workflow for these cases. And this tool seems to have geared the user interface towards using image-objects.

Marc EMILE Hello,

@ron: Yes, all future updates, including major ones, are free for lifetime. As for the image objects, yes they're free too for customers. A personal product key will be provided to you at purchase time. This key will give you access to the image packs.

@Overtkill: The photoshop plug-in can be used at two levels:

1/ You create a single image and export it using the plug-in directly in IconWorkshop. Then you can choose to create a single-image icon (PNG for instance) or a multi-image icon (ICO). Read this tutorial to learn more: http://www.axialis.com/tu...iw012.html

2/ You can use the Photoshop templates. They allow you to create complex icons with different image formats. This is the professional way to make icons. Read this to learn more: http://www.axialis.com/tu...oshop.html

Thanks,
Marc from Axialis Team

Michael Speir I've had this products for years. Yes, there are free upgrades forever.

BTW, I own other icon editors and have tried quite a few more, but I always return to IconWorkshop. If I have any gripe about it, Axialis steadfastly refuses to implement a lasso-type selection capability. Other than that, though, I love the product.

peter hayes I am a long time user, but also a long time waiter, I am waiting for the long sort after and promised layer/object support. This would be the best icon editor/creator with the inclusion of said feature hands down, no argument, but sigh I still wait.

@Phil Kennedy: Not sure what happened... I've refunded your order.

@ Peter Schleifer: Thanks for your articles about IconWorkshop, much appreciated! :)

Michael Speir @h s That's great if you have Illustrator and Photoshop. ;-) I do use PaintShop Pro and I go back and forth a lot, too. Still it would be nice to have built-in lasso and magic wand tools. I have RealWorld Icon Editor, too, and it has those functions. I find the interface clumsy, though, and always come back to IconWorkshop.

peter hayes This is almost the best icon editor out there, i say almost as it still does not have layers, this has been requested from many users on the forums for well over the last 5 years at least and still not delivered. That said i have this for the last 5 years and it really is very good, but lack of layers makes the job of icon creation that much more frustrating.

Marc EMILE You're absolutely right Peter, this is a long-time requested feature. Layers will be included in next major release. We're currently working on this new release that should be available early 2015.

Harry Stadman If you use this software in conjunction with Illustrator or Photoshop then you got all the power you need.

But layers in IconWorkshop would be nice.

I agree, this is the best icon editor, especially with the Illustrator and Photoshop plug-ins installed.

Steven Barnett In case someone comes across this discussion and concludes that this is a product for graphics experts, I can attest that this product is absolutely fantastic even for those of us who struggle to draw a straight line with a graphics package.

I have a couple of icon libraries that I "touch up" with IconWorkshop. Very easy to do and the results look very good.

Also, when I need to create a new icon from scratch, the ability to drag and drop elements in to the icon workspace is invaluable. For the majority of the icons I have needed to hand-craft, I've needed to do very little drawing.

Marc EMILE @Tess273: Indeed, IconWorkshop UI doesn't support DPI settings above 150% (144 DPI). Next version will be fully DPI aware (free with Lifetime License). Sorry for this issue.

Hawkeye I have a few issues.

1. The program has not ben updated since 09/2012 and when using the "Customize the Windows Icons", it suggests "We don't recommend to use it with this operating system. It is referring the issues with Vista. Vista, really? How can it support Windows 7 or 8, if it doesn't fully support Vista? I am running, Windows 7.

2. The daily special is for the Professional version. It does not exist, there is no Professional edition. The software being offered is 69.00, on the website, not 99.00. So the deal, is actually less than stated.

3. Lifetime upgrades are great, if the software is ever actually updated. Upgrades were discussed, the last time this was offered, 10/2013. Again, the last actual upgrade was 09/2012.

Appreciate the offer, but I 'm going to pass on this one.

Thanks,

Neo Alive Hi

is it possible to get a answer on my question from yesterday?

The offer at the website is $69 not $99 so its no 65% discount at all at the moment

Steven Barnett Neo, I don't work for Axialis but, looking at their web site, the base price is $99. If you click on the "Promotions and Special Offers" you will see that they are currently offering a 30% discount as a special offer/promotion if you buy though their site - hence the $69.

I am assuming that the BDJ discount is against the normal retail price ($99.95) rather than against the currently discounted price on their site.

Neo Alive Hi Steve, Then i still believe the offer is misleading though as that $69 offer hs been there for a while...... And i am not alone asking this. See Hawkeye's reply.

Anyway given what i see so far and read here and the fact that people are asking for layers and other abilities to this program and are waiting for more then 3 years.... and also no replies from the sellers in here i skip the offer.

Constantin Florea @Neo Alive - In our promotions we have to mention the regular price of the product and the discounted price we are offering.

Marc EMILE @Hawkeye: Yes, the feature "Customize Windows Icons" is deprecated since Vista and was kept for XP users. It will be removed in next major version. The rest of the product is totally compatible with Windows 7, 8/8.1.

@Neo Alive, Hawkeye: That's correct we're currently have a 30% off rebate on the regular price. The 65% offer refers to the regular price.

@Hawkeye: The product has not been updated since 2012 because we're working on a major release. It's a lot of work, thanks for your understanding. Note that our lifetime license will let you get this next release for free if you purchase it now. It is planned for Q1 or Q2 2015.
