What are people saying about Bolide Movie Creator

Michael Rigo Can it cut H.264/x264 video without transcoding it?
Aug 22 2013 at 4:19am Copy Link

adamsdaddy From the company website it looks like it will edit MTS files which is good. The website doesn't have much in the way of details to be able to tell whether it will output MTS files. A vague "choose one of the supported output formats" is less than helpful.

It would also be nice if somebody from the company would list the features it has over MS Moviemaker.

joan collins @Michael Rigo: Without transcoding? Dream on! H.264/x264 or another - this tool must transcode every format new - why you think you can cut a file with this tool without new transcode?

Max Smirnoff Michael, current version can edit H.264/x264 video, but it will transcode it. The modes without transcoding are in our to-do list.

adamsdaddy, Yes, it will edit MTS files, but the output formats are limited to AVI, WMV, MKV, MP4 and FLV in the current version. We never compared our program with Movie Maker. I think we should, thank you for the idea! At least, we support more formats as the input

DrTeeth Can it add proper-looking subtitles? The features and the web site just talks about adding 'comments'. Subtitles would need to be synchronised to the audio - albeit manually.

Max Smirnoff DrTeeth, current version can embed text to the video clips or photos. It is added into the frames, not as subtitle stream, but the idea is great for our to-do list, thanks :)

Max Smirnoff Ivan, yes, the download is trial. You should get the activation code if you liked both Fascebook pages. With the code you can switch the program to the full mode and you don't need to pay anything :)

Constantin Florea @Ivan Helfman - I couldn't find your purchase for this promotion based on your name or email address. If you did not receive the receipt email so far, I could send it to you but I need to know the name you've used while purchasing so I may identify your purchase. Or you could send me the email address you've used to purchase: http://www.bitsdujour.com/contact

adamsdaddy I installed it. The program is kind of like a striped down version of MS Moviemaker. The advantage it has over Moviemaker is the ability to edit MTS files without having to rename the MTS files as MPG and 5 different formats in which to output the final product: AVI, MP4, MKV, FLV and WMV. Each with Best, Good or Poor quality settings. Presumably differing levels of compression.

Thank you for offering the program.

CthulhuSaves Fair warning, this is more a full-featured trial than a freebie. You can't ever reinstall it, so pray your hard drive doesn't croak or your OS get corrupted. On the bright side, it looks like a cool and very useful bit of software. I'll enjoy seeing what it can do. I've been wanting to get my hands on a WYSIWYG (ish) video editor for ages. Everything else I've looked at has been waaaay too involved and complicated.

sb84 I don't have Facebook. So I clicked on "Get It For Free," then clicked on "Take our eleven step questionnaire instead" and nothing happened---the questionnaire did not show up. Then I went back and signed in and repeated the same steps---still didn't get the questionnaire. How do I get the questionnaire so I can get Bolide Movie Creator???
Thank you in advance for your help.

Constantin Florea @Steve Baltic, @Douglas Timmins, @John H - There are cases when FireFox and Google Chrome pose problems when trying to participate in a 100% off / Facebook deal. We believe this is because of the different add-ons which may be installed for these two browsers. Could you please clear your browser cache and try to participate in the deal using Internet Explorer?

John H I never use IE. I do not have the time to do the updates and everything else needed to use Internet Explorer.

sb84 @ Constantin Florea
Thank you for your reply. I followed your advice---cleared FF 23.0.1 browser cache and tried again. Still the questionnaire is not available. There are a lot of us out here who do not use Facebook for one reason or another. It is unfortunate that use of the #1(Chrome) and #3 (Firefox) browsers are not accepted. I would think you are missing out on a considerable amount of business because of this situation. There are numerous reasons why Internet Explorer is in decline. Please consider doing whatever is necessary to allow Chrome and Firefox to be used for your deals.
I appreciate your efforts and thank you for attempts to bring these software deals to the public. Maybe Dr. Teeth is right --- maybe it's time "to avoid these time-limited, cannot-ever-reinstall freebies."

Norm Sussman If the program owners want to give their program away, and downloaders can't install it with their downloaded serial number.......what use is the distribution effort to the owners? Their time would be better spent climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro.

CthulhuSaves The Facebook requirement is annoying, sure, but how hard is it to make a quick FB page just for things like this and simply never use it otherwise? That's what I did (I loathe FB). As long as they get their "like" they're happy, and you get a free bit of software. As for the guy who can't be bothered to use IE even once to have something given to you, you don't deserve anything, anyway. (The updates you mentioned happen automatically, assuming you're allowing Windows to update --it's nothing you'd have to consciously maintain.)

BTW, I am also having issues with validation. The software keeps locking-up every time I try to send the reg code. CPU and memory aren't spiking, either, so I don't have a clue what the deal is.

EDIT: Just tried again after having waited several hours, and now activation worked with no problem.

Ralph W Has anyone else tried this? I received the serial, however, like a few on here, limited install, 10 days, no reinstallation, means no registered install. I did decide to install and test the trial. This program is not ready for primetime.

In the trial, adding text worked with the word "text". Right click and you cannot edit. No dialog box comes up to edit.

Edit the video, the only thing you can change is the length in the timeline, where are the actual editing functions.

The preview did not work at all. You have to wait and see the final video.

It did create a video. It also included the "text" which I could not select and edit, above. The video played fine but where are all the editing functions.

http://movie-creator.com/benefits.html - Does not include anything special about the program functions except the formats supported and the speed of the CPU. A little more info on the features would have been better.

Where is the Support menu option? How do you contact Support, if you have questions? The program has no separate category on their forums. Was this program just released?

Tested on Windows 7 x64. If some of the items, I listed above, work with the registered version, the limitations should have been listed.

Thanks

Ricky Rick NOTE: the Fine Print says:

"License can be used for Personal use only".

So - from what I understand - if you plan on making videos and selling them - you are not allowed to - even if you are a one-man sole proprietor business.

You would "Legally" (and if you're honest about keeping with their fine print)only be able to make videos to show/give to your family and friends.

No sales to anybody in any form and no uploading to websites such as YouTube where you can monetize your videos and make money from the advertisements that appear in the videos.

I'm not a lawyer - but that's the way it comes across to me.

No thanks ...

SKY I wanted to buy this program but it adds VAT whereas I am not in the EU (country selected correct on the billing page), so no other vendor adds VAT for my purchases, why this?
It comes to $17.60 instead of the $14.95 above. It is a lousy $2 difference which I certainly can afford, but I am a man of principle, and I do not like to be cheated, whether it is for a buck or a million!
I will not buy this, until the vendor realizes that my country is not in the VAT applicable list.

Would you allow a free upgrade to version 3 upon its release (as you recently did with 'All My Books')?

Also, when is version 3 expected to release?

Thank you.

Max Smirnoff J, we expect to release 3.0 this autumn (no exact date). It will include 50+ effects like Instagram filters. The update to 3.x will be free, at least for those who purchased the license in 2016.

Noel Rodrigue Max, I've bought, got the receipt and instructions to use the "Register" in Help ... but when I open BMC I don't have it in Help! If I use the "Get Licence" I'm sent to the purchase page of your site!

?Help? ;-)

Max Smirnoff Noel, when you select menu item "Help - About...", you should click on "Activate..." button there to apply your code.

Noel Rodrigue Right ... I hadn't looked there as an input spot for the licence number. Thanks Max, until next time.

Jane Blue Why would you offer this without posting a sample video showing off the better transitions and effects? Don't you know doing the little extra things usually results in more sales? Sure, I could download the trial version, but if you can't be bothered to create a sample video, why should I bother installing and possibly uninstalling it. I'm always on the lookout for new video editing software, hoping for new transitions and effects that my current video editors don't offer, but I want to know a video editor has a little something I'm interested in before I try it. It's just common sense to demonstrate a software program you hope to sell rather than just expecting people to try it out. No demo video, no sale.

Gary Smith The current version of Bolide Movie Creator is 3.5. If you read through the past comments, many are from the version 2.x, and even 1.x era. Several of the comments asking about features prompted Bolide to respond that they are items on their "To-Do" list. The Bolide website does not have a Changelog for the program or What's New section for this product, and the Support Forum does not even have a section for the Movie Creator, so it is not exactly clear what changes have been implemented to get this program to version 3.5. As far as I can tell, none of the items Bolide stated that were on their To-Do list (even those planned for Version 2.x) has ever been implemented in the program.

Some software developer companies will change the major version number for something like adding support for a different language, in order to end the free update for minor versions, thus forcing users to pay for an upgrade. When there is no Changelog or What's new details, it is hard to tell if that newer version will be beneficial. Thus, many users will not gamble their money on an upgrade that may not offer anything new that is significant to them. To me this counterproductive for the developer.

Right now, this program is competing with several other video editors that offer a lot more, and still keep video editing simple, including Open Source (and totally free programs) such as Shotcut and OpenShot, which has kept the Simplicity in mind, while still being a great video editor.

I wish Bolide would step up to the plate and show they are serious about this product. They could easily publish a detailed Changelog and What's New page, and give it some decent updates to help justify its price.

Max Smirnoff We are not only increasing the version number :)
Here is the changelog between the versions:
http://movie-creator.com/whatsnew.html

This one is even more detailed, used by the program to detect the updates:

We are really working hard on BMC.

Gary Smith @Max Smirnoff:

Thank you, thank you, thank you for responding to my post.

It is clear that development has been going on but it is not clear when each of those releases occurred. Please add a date to each of the version number entries. It really is important to potential customers to truly see that development is happening on a regular basis.

The To-Do list debacle

After reading through both pages you referenced, I still did not see items that were on the "to-do" list from version 1.x era. Subtitles is still not in the product. Also, joining clips without re-encoding was another item on the to-do list, but it still has not been implemented. Any idea when we can expect to see these two features?

A to-do list implies "will happen soon, please wait for us; do not switch to our competitors, etc." If you do not follow through, you are mistreating your users. You are leading them on, ... falsely.

When a user asks about a feature, you should always treat it as an important request. After all, they took the time to send an e-mail, submit a comment, or some other method to question whether the program will have the feature in the "near future." When you fail to fulfill those requests after giving assurances, that is trickery to keep ones interest high, but taking advantage of that implied assurance by not doing anything about it. That seems very unfair. If you are still stringing users along since the version 1.x era, all the way to the 3.5 release but still not implemented what they asked about, even though you gave them some assurance it will happen soon, that is impressive, but not as impressive as it would be had you responded to user's request.

I have been in software development for over 40 years now, and I recall learning something very important early on. If you create a program and it benefits you, then that is great. You may even have some ideas how the program will evolve in the future. If you give that program to another person, and it helps them, that too is great. But if you put that software up for sale, you should soon recognize that the program has a life of its own, and it is now controlled by the customers. It no longer belongs to you, the developer. Your paying customers take over; they will tell you what features they would like to see, which ones they do not like, or how they work, and all types of other input. If you do not recognize this important fact; if you think it is totally under your own control, you are missing out on a great ride.

The Upgrade Policy

Bolide's update policy is "Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for minor versions only. For versions after that, upgrades will require additional payment, which will be discounted by 50%. It will be discounted only if you've purchased the last major version."

The idea of the major/minor policy is that a major number change suggests something significant has been added to the product, and therefore, justifies why a user will need to pay for an upgrade to have that major version number.

The initial impulse is that Bolide's upgrade policy is fair because many other software products have the same policy, ... except there is one important thing about Bolide's versioning that many other products do not use. Bolide uses a single number for the minor parts (e.g., 3.1) compared to two numbers (3.1.4). Using a single digit, after nine minor releases, the developer feels justified in incrementing the major version number, even though nothing major has been added to the product.

That means you are pretending to be just as fair as the competition, when in actuality, you are not.

When the major version details does not look significant compared to other minor version updates, I have to question the intent to imply that the user is getting something significant for their upgrade money.

All it means is "every 10 updates we make, you have to pay us to get that upgrade." And that also means regardless of which of the minor versions the user had before, even though the changes are minor from what they had. Some users may have started at the .9 level of a major version. When the next version comes out, they have to pay to get that version. Now granted, some companies will give a free update to the next major version if the user has purchased within the last n months, such as 6 months, or even within a certain period. Bolide did that for users that purchased a 2.x version in 2016 (they get to upgrade free to the version 3.x). I think that was a good idea.

A major addition to a product does not always happen every 10 minor updates. Sometimes it happens after only a few minor updates, and some programs may have over a hundred minor updates before a major addition. When a major update clearly justifies itself, users have no reason to question paying for an upgrade. I hope Bolide will implement a versioning number system that no user has reason to question.

Best of luck to you regardless.

Colin McAllister Just a suggestion for the developer(s).

Having a screenshot of a bikini-clad female captioned "Wow, great girl" may have been okay in 1960-something, but looks very outdated in 2019.

Many people use movie-maker software to construct and distribute *family* orientated videos, so why not show a screen shot of a colourful image of a family moment instead: a picnic, a family trip to a beach restaurant, someone sheltering from a downpour of rain, a graduation moment, or something along those lines?

I'm trying to be helpful here, rather than ultra-pc, but I feel there may be potential users who would be uncomfortable with that screen shot comment. If nothing else, maybe changing it to something holiday related (e.g. "Pool party!") might be all that's needed?

JOI @Colin McAllister I think you're being too sensitive. We live in a society where women are conditioned to be "offended" at just about anything and everything.

Mr Dave I had an older version of this program and found it easy to use. I liked the movie files I could create with it. So today I bought the new version.

Got 3 emails from 2Checkout.com and one from Paypal. Order went through, email gave me the license key, but NOWHERE in all these emails does it tell me how to download. No link, no instructions, just a line that says to run the program and enter registration information. I'm hoping the "trial" download link above is what I need,

I get good free stuff from BitsDuJour a few times a month, and it's always clear how to download the programs. I pay for a program, and get nothing but confusion. I'm hoping I can sort this out tomorrow, it's too late tonight. This should be much easier.

Mr Dave I was able to use the "Download Trial" link (above the countdown timer) to get the latest version. Then I entered the registration code I received in the email after my payment went through. It all seems to be working, and looks like a good program, several nice improvements. I really appreciate the work Max puts into his program!

If only the download process would have been explained somewhere, instead of saying I'll get the download link in an email:
"As soon as your order is approved, you will receive by email your
payment receipt and the subscription code/download link for the
software you have ordered."

...and then the email says:
"You can access your products according to the terms and conditions
you accepted during purchase."

...and another email says:
"To apply your registration, start Bolide Movie Creator and select...."

Are you listening, BDJ? Thanks. And thanks for bringing us good programs, especially those we might not have found other ways.

A B I find it very difficult to do the fine navigation to edit videos. Your time counter needs fractions of a second or display the frame number you are on. I can't find anywhere to do this. Also it would be nice to have an additional set of 2 forward and reverse buttons that are customizable to jump by number of frames or time/seconds. I like the software except for this. This won't save any time editing but will actually take longer than some other very basic splitting software that I have.

Nigel Brewster Apart from the interface looking a little 90's feel, I would always recommend people buying this.
It has every feature that a good video editor needs at a fraction of the cost of much more expensive software, that has features hardly anyone will need. For this price and you can use it on two computers it's a great deal, I've been using it for years, almost every day, for YT vids etc.
