What are people saying about CintaNotes

Javier Gil I currently use "notezilla", which works quite well for me, but this could help me a lot and the program is so incredibly well made... I'll probably buy it also! :)

umike CintaNotes is a great tool for
- keeping time log because it has time stamp on each note.
- recording my purchases so as to compare with my credit card bills at the end of month.
- fast dumping any idea and pieces of information from my brain. A great GTD tool indeed.
Used daily. Highly recommended.

bvssunnydale On your site both portable and non-portable versions are listed. Can both versions be installed (in most cases I'm at my home or work cpu so I'd CintaNotes be installed locally and backed up to USB, but sometimes I'm at a friends cpu where the portable version would come in handy..)..I would always be the only user and never be using two installs simultaneously.. Thx.

Thanks for your comments, really means a lot to us!

bvssunnydale:
Sure, as long as you are the only user, you can install (well, unzip in case of the portable version ;) and use both versions, there shouldn't be any problem with that!

bvssunnydale (1) Has the parent/child tag feature been implemented in the BitsDuJour version being sold (soon) or is that something to expect in the next version? (2) I downloaded CN and like it but is there any way to show only the title bar? (3) Is there any way to search ONLY the tags (eg if a tag was set to "urgent" for 20 notes but the word "urgent" was mentioned in 50 notes, could Cintanote show me ONLY the notes tagged "urgent". Thx very much.

Alex Jenter bvssunnydale:
(1) No, the tag hierarchy feature is still in the works, so it will be released only with the next CN version later this month. It will be available to all license holders regardless when you've bought the license.
(2) Currently the best you can do is set the "Preview text lines" param in the "Options/Notes list" dialog to 0 (both min and max). This will reduce the note display just to title and tags. In later vesions a switch will be added that would allow you to quickly toggle different display modes.
(3) Yes, just click on the icon next to the magnifying glass and select "Tags" in the context menu that appears.

Peter Gabriel Just read this on your forum:

'By the way, I see that people there got the wind of the upcoming Bits Du Jour promotion. Just wanted to warn everyone that after seeing the financial results of the first sales month, we are planning to increase the license price to $25 after the next release. So it makes no sense to wait for the promotion, even considering the discount it will be cheaper to buy the license now'

Have you changed your mind regarding the price increase, because I see the BDJ price is $4.99 (full price $9.99)?
Jun 4 2012 at 12:47pm Copy Link
0
Tazzie If you are going to increase the license price, will you consider increasing the discount on license renewals? Right now it is 20%, which is rather low. I was willing to accept that since the license price now is reasonable. However, there is a large difference between 20% of $9.99 and 20% of $25 for a license renewal.
Jun 4 2012 at 1:39pm Copy Link

a a Agree with Tazzie about renewal/upgrade discount. I'd like to see a more standard 50% discount for renewal/upgrade pricing.

Alex Jenter Peter Gabriel:
This was the initial plan, but two things happened:
1) The new release is being delayed, because the new big feature - the tag hierarchy support - needs more polishing. Without a new release with a new paid feature we don't have sufficient grounds to change the price now.
2) This page went live earlier than we expected and with the old price. And many people clicked on "I want this deal", seeing the price of $4.99. We wouldn't like to make all this people feel cheated.

This is why the promotional price stays at $4.99!

Tazzie, a a:
Indeed, 20% is from the current price. When the price gets increased, the license renewal will be at 50%. So with the price of $25 for the Personal License, the renewal will cost $12.50.

a a Some suggestions for CN:

1) Allow mouse selection and copy/paste of selection on main notes list. At the moment you have to double-click to edit the note and then make the selection.

2) Option to keep formatting of text clipped from other apps or pasted from clipboard. eg. if I select the first section from the help (ie. "About CintaNotes"), and import into CN, I would like the "About CintaNotes" line to keep the bold formatting.

3) Undo/Redo doesn't work with formatting

2) This is also planned, please vote:
http://roadmap.cintanotes...opic/93101
http://roadmap.cintanotes...opic/80345

3) I've just tested (1.6.2): undo/redo works, but you have to press Ctrl+Z(Y) many times. This is a bug and we'll be fixing that. Thanks for reporting this!

4) These are just my own prefixes for tag grouping. For example I use "." prefix for tags describing type of the note, "#" for projects, "@" for people and "!" for todos. It is also convenient that CN ignores prefixes on autocomplete, so when I type "c", "#cintanotes" is suggested, and when I type "t", "!todo" is suggested.

When tag hierarchy is implemented, I'll replace these prefixes with proper parent tags, like: "projects/cintanotes", "type/aphorism", "status/todo" etc.

Peter Gabriel:
Thanks, hope that you'll enjoy using the program ;)

kailey stone Hi, I have been testing out the free version of this program, but have hit a bit of a roadblock. I cannot find a way to change the background colour of the notes, or the text.
All I can find is the option for colour theme, which does not affect these areas.
This is necessary for me, as I cannot properly read black text on a white background, due to visual issues.
While I can make adjustments on my own system to handle this problem, the same is not true elsewhere, thus rendering it non-portable for me.

Is this option available, and if so where would it be found?

a a Alex - Thanks for pointing me to the relevant roadmap links. I have up-voted all of them.

Another question about the first screenshot on BDJ - What do the darker blue vertical lines to the left of some of the tags signify (eg. .bug-report, .feature-req etc.) ?

Re. prefixes, I think it would help your sales if the user manual/website included more hands-on examples/suggestions of how CN can be used to improve various workflows. I did see a Tips and tricks in the forum, but the various ideas should be expanded upon and written up properly in a tutorial fashion.

Looking forward to the tag hierarchy feature.

Couple more suggestions:

5) Allow multiple databases/notebooks to be open at same time in one window, and have a tab for each one. I know there is a suggestion for tabs on the roadmap, but that seems to be about using tabs for different sections of a single notebook. Not sure if my idea is already on the roadmap, but it shouldn't be too hard to implement as you just need to wrap the current window in a tab control (or you could roll-your-own tab/button control), and handle switching between notebook tabs.

6) Optional vertical scrollbar for tags list when list goes off bottom of window. With a lot of tags, it can be quicker to use scrollbar to reach top/bottom, compared to clicking on up/down button.

7) Option to allow seconds for note timestamp.

Will be making my purchase in a bit. :)

also the date format should be customizable - eg. when right now its- 6/6/2012 8:54pm - i should be able to customize it fully - include seconds + set it as 06 june 2012 8:54:30 PM

VLM umike - Sorry to sound ignorant ... what does "GTD tool" mean?

Alex Jenter - Can the installed and the portable version share the same database, or merge/syncronize them?

Also, adding to what Amit gandhi has written, valid date stamps should include standard yyyymmdd:hhmm, as 20120606:1418, the current date and time where I am, and with the hhmm portion being optional (toggle on/off).

a a As I understand it, current date stamp uses system locale format. The easiest way to support different formats would probably be to just allow the user to enter a template (using the various designators for each component)

https://en.wikipedia.org/...#Durations

Initially though, I'd be happy with just an option to show seconds or just always show them, using the current locale format.

Alex Jenter kailey stone:
"Is available, and if so where would it be found?"

I'm really sorry but unfortunately at the moment the color scheme is not fully customizable. But we understand the importance of this issue and will be implementing this soon in one of the next versions.
I kindly ask you to vote for this feature on our roadmap:
http://roadmap.cintanotes...omization/

a a:
"What do the darker blue vertical lines to the left of some of the tags signify (eg. .bug-report, .feature-req etc.) ? "

The darker blue lines mark tags related to the current tag selection. Two tags are considered related if there exists a note that has both of them. So basically the blue lines show you which tags you can still Ctrl+click (Ctrl+clicking applies tag intersection) and get a non-empty set. It is all described with details in the help section called "Using the Tag Sidebar".

"it would help your sales if the user manual/website included more hands-on examples/suggestions of how CN can be used to improve various workflows"

Thanks for the tip, we'll definitely do that. We also are planning to create a tutorial video.

"5) Allow multiple databases/notebooks to be open at same time in one window, and have a tab for each one."

Do you suggest to abandon tabs as sections idea, or do you think that tabs can be used for both?

"6) Optional vertical scrollbar for tags list when list goes off bottom of window"

Well we have tried to avoid visual clutter, that's why there's no scrollbar there. If you scroll with the mouse wheel, it is much faster than using the buttons.
Also with tag hierarchy implemented, the need to scroll the sidebar will diminish.

"7) Option to allow seconds for note timestamp"

CN used to display seconds, but then I removed it because couldn't think about a reason why anyone would need to see them. Could you please elaborate why you need seconds?
Thanks!

Amit gandhi:
"also the date format should be customizable - eg. when right now its- 6/6/2012 8:54pm - i should be able to customize it fully - include seconds + set it as 06 june 2012 8:54:30 PM"

Thanks for the suggestion, I agree that it should be customizable. I've added the idea to the roadmap, please vote:
http://roadmap.cintanotes...me-format/

VLM:
"Can the installed and the portable version share the same database, or merge/syncronize them? "

Yes they can share the same database, provided they are both 1.6.2 versions or later. You can even run them simultaneously, although in this case some data loss can occur if you start editing the same note in both instances.

"valid date stamps should include"
Duly noted ;)

"Does the 12 months run from the purchase date or the first installation date?"
They run from the date of the key generation, so it's purchase date.

Also please mind that CN won't auto-downgrade to free version after one year. You just won't be able to update to a new CN version and use commercial features there. But if you stay with an older version (= released before one year passes), you can use the commercial features infinitely long without purchasing a license renewal.

Kou K.:
Please see my answer above.

Mary Wilson:
"Will we have to pay for the new release or will be free?"

For the license holders all updates will be free during 1 year!
And the next release (and price increase) will definitely happen before, so you're on the safe side here.
After 1 year you have to either buy a license renewal (to 50% discount from the full price), or stick to the last version released within this period, or to go back to free license.

Watcher1924:
"I am in Europe. If I go through all the procedure to purchase it (using PayPal) the final price will be the one we see on the BitsDuJour page or there will be a difference?"

Depending on the country, VAT maybe added to the final price.
It will be displayed in the purchase form, and
with this discounted price it will be about $1-1.5.

According to our records, users from the following European countries don't pay VAT: Croatia, Russia, Switzerland, Ukraine. Users from Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Slovak Republic, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom pay VAT.

Alex Jenter TROUBLESHOOTING: IF REGISTRATION FAILS
Please note: if after receiving the license email you choose to enter the registration data by hand, you have to enter it exactly as it appears there - your name AND your email in one line.
Without email the name and the key won't match!

Some people have had problems registering the license because of this.
In the next version we'll change the label from "Registration Name" to "Registration Name and E-Mail" to alleviate this issue.
Thanks!

a a Re. tabs "Do you suggest to abandon tabs as sections idea, or do you think that tabs can be used for both? "

I haven't thought much about the tabs as sections idea. It's just that I am used to and like multi-row tabbed interfaces for accessing multiple documents/pages (eg. web browser for different pages/sites, text editor for different files etc.). Using the standard windows tab control would be OK for starters, but I don't like the way it swaps the row order with multi row tabs. The Tab Utilities extension for Firefox mimics the look of the normal tab control, but doesn't swap tab rows when multi-row tabs is enabled.

You could have still use tabs for both - just have document tabs at the top, which wrap everything on the window except for the menu bar (ie. tag sidebar, search boxes, and notes area), and then have the section tabs within this area.

As I said though, I haven't given using tabs for both much thought from a UI perspective though.

Bruce I gave the free version a look a little while back, and it has potential. So am giving it another look.

One thing I do not like and can see no way to alter, is that it always saves the user data by re-creating the program file substructure, within the Documents And Settings folder (XP).
Thus for me, I find the data file is in:
C:\Documents and Settings\myusername\Application Data\Text-View-Apps\CintaNotes\cintanotes.db

At the least, I would like it to be user selectable and that it would remember the choice.
(I mention this, because I had tried with an earlier version to raise the db file up one level, but on installing the 1.6.2 update, it decided to create a new db file back down at the lowest ...Text-View-Apps\CintaNotes\cintanotes.db location, and did not re-use the higher location I had moved it to with previous version.)

Can the default store location be user choice?
Maybe it already is and I just don't see/understand ... that's certainly possible ;)

One other question, when I paste this comment into CintaNotes, it makes the text "cintanotes.db" above into a blue underlined web hyperlink (two times, now three) -- which it is not. Is that correctable/preventable -- without disabling real, true web hyperlinks?
Thx.

Thanks for your kind words, you're most welcome!

We strive to produce quality software that will improve people's daily productivity and inspire them. CintaNotes is not yet as feature rich as some other notes software, but I take as my personal challenge to keep CintaNotes simple and easy to use while adding new features, and albeit slowly and gradually, CN should be getting better and better with each new release.

Alex Jenter Bruce:
Sorry for the inconveniences.
CintaNotes uses the AppData folder when the application folder is not writable (as is the case with the Program Files folder, which according MS guidelines applications shouldn't be writing into).

The data file location is actually now user selectable via the "File/New" and "File/Save As" commands, and the last path used is remembered.
In the registered version, paths for multiple files are remembered and can be easily switched.

I don't know why the new version hasn't picked up the path to the file from the old version. Probably the old version was too old? ;)
Maybe you've installed the new version into another folder, so that it didn't have access to the old version's settings file?

"One other question, when I paste this comment into CintaNotes, it makes the text "cintanotes.db" above into a blue underlined web hyperlink"
This is a known problem of the over-zealous URL detection. We'll fix that in the next version.

Dmitry S It's a fantastic!
I like this friendly and lightweight tool with a plenty of shortcuts.
I've been using it since the last deal almost every day.

@ CintaNotes Team

could you be so kind please, to add the ability to use local links in the CintaNotes articles such as "file://localhost/D:/Projects/project1.txt" or "file://localhost/D:/Projects/diagram.jpg"

So users can easy open the linked doc and rtf files or images (or any kind of media files) from a CintaNotes article by double click.

Now only the URL links are supported.

My english is not perfect, sorry

Alex Jenter @Dmitry S: Thanks for your kind words, I'm really glad that CN has been so useful for you. As for your request, CN already supports this, you just need to add an extra slash required by the "file" protocol, like this: file:///D:/Projects/diagram.jpg.

You can even link to exe files and have them executed when the link is clicked, like this: file:///C:\Windows\System32\calc.exe

John Hood Alex, this is John - we worked offline the settings.ini fix with 1.8.2 or 1.8.3 - a month or so ago - been awhile. Anyway I just paid here for a licensed copy to continue my support for CintaNotes.

One question: Dare I over-right my current free (plus my previous donatation) 1.8.4 version?

Or, create a new directory and import 1.8.4 stuff into this now just paid version 2.0?

P.S. I am still hoping that you will add the printing of individual notes feature and import of images.

Daly de Gagne I downloaded CintaNotes new version, and decided to buy the enhanced version. The purchase went through, and I received a registration number by email.

However, when I try to register the program tells me my registration information was not found.

Then I noted that the registration info I received spelled my name wrong. So I attempted to register again, using my misspelled name.

Still no luck.

Then I downloaded the program again to see if it would make a difference. It did not.

Thus far, I have wasted about half an hour on a busy day with what should have taken five minutes.

Please advise what I can do to either correct this mess or get my money back.

Thank you.

Watcher1924 Since a long time I'm in search of the most suitable for me note manager. Before sometime ago - after your promotion here at BDJ - I visited your forum to check for a couple of the most important features for me. I'm afraid I'm still confused; I was left with the impression that CintaNotes - at least since version 1.8 - can copy rich formated text from the majority of programs but, still, I only get this boring plain text (and the occasional links in blue)when I clip/paste from my browsers. In gereral, this consists a deal breaker for me and a big part of potential users.
Can finally this program clip/paste parts and pictures of the most web pages effectively (without any/much distortion in font type, font size, font style, text colour and text background colour etc)? What about from other text editors? Does it matter if the source program is portable? Please, even if you give links for some topics in the forum, provide some info here about the Mozilla and Chrome case. It is very important for me to know about the installable and the portable versions of Chrome because otherwise I would have a very rear need for this program.

Alex Jenter Watcher1924: You're asking whether CintaNotes can clip the text with pictures and all formatting from web pages. Unfortunately at the moment the answer is no. Converting modern HTML + CSS to rich text presents a difficult technical problem which we'll be solving in future, but since our developer resources are limited, at the moment CintaNotes focuses on text information.

We have a voting system on our roadmap, where people vote for features. Here if you wish you can vote for this feature to increase its priority:
http://roadmap.cintanotes...-browsers/

At the time though, if keeping the web page formatting is an absolute must for you, I'd suggest looking at software designed specifically for clipping web pages.

DroidLuvr I am confused about the license options... After reviewing your web page, I see that the "PRO" version has a lot of features I would need. Also, I see some items that show for the "commercial" license, and the license apparently offered here is "Personal."

Here is an example from your home page at http://cintanotes.com/ --- [under the News section]:

"...Dec 19, 2012 — Version 2.0!
Simplenote synchronizationFeature
Finally you'll be able to access your notes from your mobile device! (Commercial)
Tabbed notebook sectionsFeature
Divide your notebook into colorful sections! (Up to 3 sections in the free version, unlimited number of sections in the licensed version.)
Linking notes with each otherFeature
Now you can link notes together! More than that, now you can place a link to a CN note into any rich-text enabled app! (Commercial)..."

However, in a blue text graphic next to this, it shows all these features in the "Pro" version. Then, when I use the "buy now" it only offers a "Personal" version...

I want to purchase a license, but I won't be using it for any commercial usage - just a small home network -- so could you explain the above?

Also, is there a size limit for the notes database?

Thank you!

Alex Jenter Watcher1924: You'd probably also want to vote for this feature:
http://roadmap.cintanotes...-in-notes/

About the name, in Spanish "la cinta" means band, or tape, which is similar to how CN displays notes. And also is a beautiful word. However we are not Spanish (I say "we" because there's already a team working on CN), we are located in Krasnoyarsk, Russia.

Alex Jenter Charles L: Just press the "Buy now" button. After you complete the purchase, you'll receive your license key by mail. Which you can enter into CintaNotes downloaded from cintanotes.com.

Alex Jenter DroidLuvr: Thanks for your questions! "PRO" is at the moment just a marketing shorthand to mean either Personal or Company license - they both are PRO. So when you buy a Personal license, you'll be getting all the features listed in the box.

About the notes database size - there's no hard limit, but when the size of the DB is more than 25 MB CintaNotes starts getting slow.
But there are some things you can do about it: you can divide notes into several sections, and you can split the notes among several notebook files.
Cinta Software - Dec 20 2012 at 7:57pm Copy Link

Alex Jenter Raymond: you can search for the next occurrence of the selected text via pressing F3. I know this is not very convenient, and a full-fledged Search and Replace function will be added in one of the next versions.

Michael R. Yet another question: In the policies you say, upGRADES are free for one year, than they have to be payed. This implicated for me, that upDATES are free for the owners of certain major version (e.g. v2.x)

The about-tab in your program says, updates are free for one year.

Hmmm, does that mean, that bugfix-updates are not free for owners of the current major version?

Alex Jenter Michael R.: This is not possible yet, but it is on the roadmap:
http://roadmap.cintanotes...mand-line/

Since we receive really a lot of very different requests, we have to prioritize, and vote count is one of the major attributes.

Also it's unfortunately difficult to tell when it will be implemented - for example, if suddenly 100-200 people would vote for this feature today, it could be implemented already in the next version, 2.1 :)

Alex Jenter Michael R.: The rules are: you can use the commercial features of all CN versions released during one year since the date of purchase.
So after 1 year you'll have the following choice:
- Buy an upgrade (for 50% of regular price) and use the commercial features of the latest version during another year;
- Don't update, stay with the last version that you have and use the commercial features there for indefinitely long;
- Update to the latest version, but switch back to the free Basic License.

Also I think I need to clarify the terms used:
- Under "upgrade" I mean something you buy, under "update" I mean something you do ;)

Thanks for the info... the full-fleged search & replace in the Notes editor would be very helpful !!

I hope you keep the active spell checking high on your priority list... there is nothing worse than to forward on a note to someone from your "database" of notes and then realize that you have a bunch of misspelled words! I tried TinySpell but I would rather not have another utility program causing hot-key conflicts...

Alex Jenter File Manager:
1) Yes, please try this one: http://cintanotes.com/fil...huge20.zip
It is about 45Mb in size and has more than 10000 notes.
You can see that textual search becomes a bit slow, but if you pre-filter with sections or using tag sidebar, it becomes fast again.

2) is there a way to read a large note without pressing enter, using pg down or any mouse scroll?

Yes, first, you can use the following shortcuts:
Left/Right Arrow - scrolls text of focused note by 1 line;
Shift + Left/Right Arrow - scrolls text by 1 page;
Hold down spacebar - all the navigation keys (up/down arrows, page up/down) go into the note's text view.
Also you can hold down left mouse button and scroll mouse wheel.

3) No, at the moment we don't plan to sell lifetime licenses, sorry.

Alex Jenter Cary Adams: Here are a few advantages of using CN over EN:

1) Simplicity - CintaNotes is very simple and strightforward, you can get productive with it in no time;

2) Light footprint and speed- it loads instantaneously and most operations are lighting fast;

3) No forced data upload - you can keep you data local, without uploading it to the cloud;

4) CintaNotes allows you to run multiple instances, each using its own clipping hotkeys and own colors.

5) As of version 2.0, CN has tabbed sections, which allow you to divide your notebooks into several separated zones. And with Ctrl+clicking on tabs, you can pick any combination of sections to be displayed.

6) Correct tag hierarchy - Evernote has tag hierarchy, but it is fundamentally broken. When you have tag A, and A has subtag B, then when you select tag A, notes with tag B should be displayed, because B is-kind-of A. Evernote doesn't do that, it treats tags like folders. CintaNotes does, so you can create and effectively use correct taxomonic relations like "Cars/Sport/Ferrari" or "Projects/NewYearParty/Guests/Maybes".

7) Synchronization with Dropbox and Simplenote.

If none of the above reasons speak to you, then of course you should continue using Evernote. But I think giving CN a try can't really hurt, can it? I'm ready to give to anyone a 1-week license for trial - just drop me a message to supportcintanotes.com

SamT Let me be the first to comment in the new discount offer of Cintanotes.
I regularly would be glad with the free version, but the limited tabs sanction is something uncomfortable if one wants to organize a lot of different subjects in one database.
The purchase is also a cheap way to give a little thanks to the developers. It really is a very "simple" styled UI and therefor exactly what I need, a place to save and organize my notes without being distracted by mostly unnecessary options that one almost never uses anyway.
Something still is bothering me in Cintanotes though and I would appreciate if maybe this could be considered by the developers:
I really would prefer to just drag and drop notes from one tab to another, if this was possible it would be a big time-saver.
Is this something to expect in the near future?

Alex Jenter Hi SamT,
thanks a lot for your kind words!
About drag and dropping notes: great suggestion. I think it will be a large boost to program's usability.
I've added it to our roadmap, please vote for it:

The more people vote, the sooner it will be implemented. Thanks! :)

Craig Haywood Is this a lifetime license? Also, what I like about CintaNotes is that it is extremely lightweight which makes it instantly available when you need it. Is it the direction of the developer to keep it lightweight or are there any plans to add more features which may slow it down?
May 29 2013 at 12:36am Copy Link

Alex Jenter Craig Haywood:
The license per se is not time limited - it is permanently valid for CintaNotes versions released till May 29, 2014. Should you want to update CintaNotes to a later version, you'd have to renew the license (which is offered with a 50% discount to the full license price).
Unfortunately we can't afford to offer full lifetime licenses as the inflow of new customers alone is not enough to keep the project further developed.

We plan to add more features, but will avoid feature bloat at all costs - so we'll make sure that added features perfectly fit already existing features and extend them naturally. Performance is always one of our top concerns.

daniel paner I come back to the idea of using CintaNotes over and over, but each time I get stopped when I remember the limits in file formats for importing notes from elsewhere. XML is the only non-cintanotes format and is an uncommon format for free-form notes takers. Perhaps another time!

Hi, I guess that you're looking at the description of the "SimpleNote" app on the Play store. This app doesn't have anything to do with the Simplenote service. Please use one of the following apps to access your notes on the Android platform:
- Glance Note
- Notational Acceleration
- mNote
- FlickNote
- JadeNote.
I personally recommend Glance Note as it supports tags and can handle large number of notes.
A more complete list of Simplenote-compatible note-taking apps for all platforms can be found here:

Hope this helps!

Adam Bridge SamT do you represent the Company or just trying to be helpful ? I already gathered that it didnt appear to be supported from the specs given but many programs are in fact Win 8 compatible even if not advertised as such because companies haven't updated their advertising. This is especially so if they already work happily with Windows 7. However given that Windows 8 is now the current operating system in Windows I think that greater emphasis should be being placed on firstly advertising programs that are Win 8 compatible (and start winding down those that don't support Windows 8). Secondly to avoid continuing confusion and questions from potential purchasers the O/Ps of this website should be either listing it as working or specifically ruling Windows 8 out as incompatible.

Doug Atkinson The discussion here of Commercial/Business license has me a little confused.

On the CintaNotes Help pages, it states, "The PRO License provides access to all features including the premium features listed above. The PRO is intended both for non- commercial and commercial (business) environments."

I use CintaNotes at work (mostly for personal use) and purchased the "personal" license previously. Do I need a different license to use this at work? Or is the commercial license just intended for multiple parties at a commercial location? Thanks!

Neil I like its simplicity, and moreso the fact that it shows the notes in the list, rather than making me click. I think it might have worked for me but I ran into obsticles...I mainly would want it like a sticky note to do list to organize my day. I just used the tag todo...then I would use tag done when it's done. However, there's no "Not" logic, so no way to filter saying "Not done". Anyway, that would probably work better with true filters rather than tags (so you could leave that on and still search. Or just build in "todo" capabilities.

Also, why not drag and drop tag labels from the left bar to categorize? And/or vice versa, drop the note on the tag on the left (would let you drop multiple notes that way)

Dierk There are a number of good note-taking / gathering programs available - even if they all appear to be from small software outfits, which raises the question of long-term viability.

However, even ignoring the question of probable longevity - AND To The Best Of Knowledge - these all lack an important feature: The ability to SYNC to a Native Mobile App, WITHOUT having to use "The Cloud."

In fact, of course, none of these programs even has a mobile app - or, at least, not for the Android OS - which would be a prerequisite to Syncing between desktop & mobile.

Syncing to some Cloud App costs $$ (data usage); may not be possible at certain times; imposes lag; and presumes that the Cloud App ITSELF will remain viable.
And, in addition, with all of the news about the apparently COMPLETE Lack of Security for data transmitted over the airways, many of us are bound to have at least SOME data bits we would prefer to keep private - even if only out of a sense of propriety.

PhatNotes did a fine job on the Windows Mobile platform - but it never made the jump to the newer versions of WindowsPhone, let alone to Android.

Here's hoping that CintaNote, or some other candidate, will introduce Mobile Versions of their apps - given the increasing popularity of SmartPhones & Mobile OS-based Tablets.

Lily Very dedicated CintaNotes user here, but running self-contained on a USB flash drive seems elusive. While the program itself works fine, it is unable to deal with drive letter changes -- i.e. the USB drive having a different drive letter on different machines. It's a small annoyance, but one that ended up shifting me away from it for a while.

Alex Jenter Guy Austrian: If you mean just relocating the .db file on disk, this can be done simply by using the File/Save As command. If you're talking about the cloud sync, you need a PRO key for this. You can request a 10-day trial key from the Help/License window. After the key is registered, the File/Synchronization command will become available. Enter there your Simplenote credentials (if you don't have any, you'd need to sign up at simplenote.com first). After that you'll be able to sync your notes with Simplenote.
I know this is not the best explanation in the world - so if something is still not clear enough, please don't hesitate to ask!

Alex Jenter Hi Glen,
Yes, the renewal price will have to increase as well. I understand that this is not really heartening news, and this was a difficult decision for us as well. But unfortunately this is now absolutely necessary for the survival of the project. Currently we are getting on average $700 per month which is definitely not enough to sustain even a single developer, and we have now two.

Indeed we want to make the development more dynamic, implement more of the long-demanded features, finally start working on our own Android and iOS apps.

You are right that 60% is a large increase, but we believe that it's better to make unpopular things seldom but substantial (they don't cut a dog's tail piece by piece, if you understand what I mean.) The last time we raised the price from $9.99 to $25, which was 250%, and it went well.

On the other hand, I think that $39 is close to the upper limit for this software niche, so it's unlikely that the price will go even higher after that during the next 3-4 years.

We think that raising the price will have the following benefits:

1) Hopefully it will increase our bottom line, allowing us to continue working on CintaNotes full-time. For you this means that you'll be getting more new features, and they will be implemented sooner. Also we'll be able to finally start developing CintaNotes apps for mobile platforms.

2) It will make our discount programs more attractive. You think $39 is too much? Well just write a short review on a popular site, and get the license for free! In result we'll get free promotion and exposure, which will, again, result in increased bottom line and a more dynamic program development;

3) As we'll be getting less sales but at a higher price, it will also reduce our costs connected with priority technical support for paying customers, leaving more time on working on new features and enhancing existing ones.

Of course only time will tell if this was the correct decision, but as of now it seems to us the only reasonable one.

Also due to popular demand we are thinking about introducing Lifetime PRO license, which won't require yearly renewal in order to stay updated to the latest CN version. It will cost $99. However it is still not decided to 100%.

Hope this does help you understand the inner motives for this decision.

_*_ Alex, I presently own CN and use it quite often; thank you for making the program.

I have found the software finicky at times (e.g. not adding links to websites at times), but overall very well made.

What I would like to ask is if there are any plans to add the ability to insert images into notes?

If not images, would it be possible to have the program add the websites own icon (not really sure if it has a proper name) to the front of the title for the captured note in CN?

It would be faster to recognize what sites are being looked for at times.

Finally, I would be very interested in a lifetime license that would hopefully be a bit discounted for current users.

Thanks again for your hard work and excellent program.

Alex Jenter Hi _*_, thanks for all the kind words! About CN being "finicky" with adding links to websites: this is very very web browser dependent! If you have some repeatable case, I'd be happy to investigate and fix it, please send the details to supportcintanotes.com. Also it may help to run CintaNotes as administrator. By definition the options for clipping are very limited if the application you're clipping from is higher privileged. > if there are any plans to add the ability to insert images into notes? Yes, already in the next semi-major version 2.7 we plan to add this possibility. However it won't be possible to insert images directly into note's text. Bit it will be possible to add images as attachments. If you tell me a bit more what do you need images for, I'll make sure that the implementation doesn't disappoint you ;) > would it be possible to have the program add the websites own icon This also has been suggested in the past, and we plan to implement it, however not in the next couple of versions. But you can vote here to increase the priority: http://roadmap.cintanotes...shability/ > Finally, I would be very interested in a lifetime license that would hopefully be > a bit discounted for current users. Great to hear that! If we indeed offer Lifetime licenses, then of course there will be a discount for existing users, although I can't promise that it will be as large as 50%. But you can count on at least 25%.

_*_ @Alex Jenter,

I will retract my statement about the program being finicky as I found what was happening when links were not added to web pages.

It appears if I go to a website and simply press Ctrl-F12 with no text highlighted CN will not add a link.
If I go back highlight a bit of text then press Ctrl-F12 CN inserts the appropriate link.

So, my mistake.

Is it possible to have CN add a link if you are on a website without anything highlighted? I think it would be faster than having to highlight text first.

What I want to do with images is something like this...

Link an item on a website (let's say, http://cintanotes.com/) and I want an image of the item/product (like on your homepage) to better remember it without having to go to the site to see it unless I wanted to.

It would be easier to have it within the note and not as an attachment to be able to scroll and see it so it would be easier to compare items saved.

That is one basic use for images as I would like to use them.

Thank you for asking and for your timely responses here on Bits today.

However, I can't promise that clipping images will be included with the first edition of file/image attachments feature. Bit it for sure will be a priority for the upcoming versions.

Alex Jenter _*_, sorry I forgot to reply to the "clipping without selecting text" issue. Filling the URL when no text is selected is a nontrivial technical problem, since CintaNotes takes the URL from the clipboard, and when no text is selected, there's nothing that can be put into the clipboard.
But a suggestion to do something about this already exists, I suggest you vote for it:

_*_ Alex, regarding websites and no text selected.
Is it possible, if no text selected, to have CN simply copy the address of the site and paste it into the link area of CN?

I am not a programmer so it sounds simple in my mind but may be much more complex than I can imagine.

Thanks

Bruce Hi, I've been meaning to get the pro version of CintaNotes for a while.

I've been liking the idea of a simple (and portable) note software that will grab all the web snippets --and their URL links-- that I have previously been either (a) dragging URLs to desktop from browser and saving them in folders (probably have now hundreds? even more likely...), or (b) manually creating little text files with manually copied text and URLs of the sites I wish to save for reference.

Thanks for this showing up and encouraging me to get it.

Alex Jenter Hello a a, re document tabs: this feature is as you see quite popular on the roadmap, already 50 upvotes (and after your comment here will probably be even more). However there are a lot of suggestions with more votes, so I wound't expect it to appear during next 3 months. Of course you can get even more people to vote for it and this can change the priorities.

Alex Jenter _*_: Clipping with no text selected is indeed harder than you think. First of, there's no way for CintaNotes to even know that no text is selected before it sends the Ctrl+C command and after some timeout sees that nothing appeared in the clipboard. This will introduce an irritating delay. After that CintaNotes has to get the URL, which usually comes within the clipboard snippet. It won't anymore, so we have to go browser-dependent here and use accessibility interfaces and such to get the URL.
Hope this illuminates a bit the depth of this task.

Alex Jenter Hi everyone, Alex here, very exited to run another promotion with the great guys of BDJ! :) This time we added the Lifetime license option to the deal, just in case you don't like yearly license renewals.
CintaNotes is doing great (thanks to your support) and is still actively developed and regularly updated. We are currently working on highly demanded new PRO features: file and image attachments and notebook password protection.

I'll be reading the comments regularly during the promotion, and will try to promptly answer all questions!

Paul User Microsoft OneNote is now free (all features) and also cross-platform.

What are CintaNotes Pro advantages (besides being portable) compare to OneNote to make us pay for it ?
Mar 18 2015 at 5:09am Copy Link
0
Alex Jenter Paul User, thanks for the question!

Ok, just to name a few:
- CN is less bloated and complex
- CN lets you focus on text and not think about formatting
- CN is streamlined for fast operation: fast clipping and fast searching. I believe that OneNote can't give you the same feeling of having information real-time under your fingertips like CintaNotes can.
- CN has a much better tagging system, and CN PRO adds support for hierarchic (nested) tags which can be a great help in organizing complex data.
- CN gives you control over where your data files are
- CN can sync with Simplenote
- CN gives you a shortcut to paste notes into other apps - great for quick text templates and such
- CN allows you to run multiple instances of itself, each having own clipping hotkeys

All the above, plus one other advantage you already named - that CN has a portable version and can run off a USB stick.

You can say that many of these items are also available in the free edition of CN. That's true, but if you choose CN over ON in the first place, then you'll likely also need the license to have multiple notebooks, unlimited section tabs, hierarchic tags and other paid features.

Of course OneNote also has advantages over CN - mainly with the rich media, and Office integration. You should choose based on your needs.

Actually there may be no real need to choose one over the other. I know that many people use both CN and OneNote (or Evernote) together, CN being the "front line" in collecting data.

_*_ @Alex Jenter, you forgot two other things that makes CN better; it has lifetime license and it is not Microsoft! :o)

I own and use CN Pro with lifetime license. It is a, small, fast, and very convenient way to grab a web page link, or copy and paste directly into CN text that you want but do not want to create a document to store.

I am a very pleased user of CN Pro.

Anthony User, thanks a lot for being our loyal customer! Unfortunately the current 50% discount is for the full Lifetime license, not for the upgrade. But the upgrade to the Lifetime license costs $79.99 - as you see $59.50 is still better, so taking advantage of this promotion makes sense.

M User When I have too much tabs (?) - 2 full rows on a 4K-screen - and I add another extra then this new tab is 'disappear'. Is there a limit?

Also: is there a possability to manage the tab-width yourself?
Jun 14 2016 at 7:08am Copy Link

Alex Jenter @M User: The tab bar is scrollable. Note those little arrows on the edges appearing. You can also scroll with mouse wheel while pointer is above any tab.

But I think it would be beneficial for you to reduce the minimum tab width. You can do this by editing the "sectionbar.tab.width.min" parameter in the cintanotes.settings file (100 would be a good value). This way tabs will occupy less space. Note that you need to exit CN to edit the settings file, otherwise your changes won't "stick". Hope this helps!

ALAS! The download is the free version, and attachments are not allowed. I was expecting a trial version of the full featured program, and am not sure that I want to buy another notes program to try all the features, only to find, again, that it does not suit my needs.

M User Great program (have lifetime Pro) !!
What I really want to see in the near future:

- Also (optional) copy images on a webpage selexted text (when there are images) - like the old program 'Net Snippets' (option for images direct in the notes - like a hard copy of that part of a webpage - a 'screenshot', but you can edit it.
- A build-in text editor, not just via right-click. With buttoms for bold, italic, ... but also text color, different highlight colors ... even different background colors for the notes :) Also, just like (the good old) 'Net Snippets'
https://net-snippets.en.s...m/download
- Build-in mini screenshot tool, just like ... Net Snippets ;)

Dan Amiel Damn, i'm so frustrated. Just discovered this software without really digging into it and said to myself, let's try the 1 yr free updates version, which i did. After watching the videos and starting to use the software, i'm now banging my head against the fridge wishing i had purchased the lifetime version...

Up until now, i used to take notes by creating text files that have over the years accumulated everywhere. In folders (i have so many i lost oversight), on my desktop (Imagine, i have 3 screens and everywhere text files...).
With this program, i could unite all of them in one single place !

So my question to the author would be: Could you send me an invoice of the price difference (47,60-15,60=32) and send me lifetime registration details ?

Petr For me, my content on multiple devices is mandatory. Great to see Simplenotes sync. My questions please:
#1. Simplenotes supports Markdown for text formatting. Do notes with Markdown, when sycn'd to CintaNotes, respect the Markdown?
#2. Do note attachments get sync'd from CintaNotes to Simplenotes?
#3. What are the limitations of the sync of CintaNotes to Simplenotes?
#4. What is the limit, in terms of: (a) note size? (b) notebook size? (c) attachment size? Thanks.
Jan 4 2017 at 9:00am Copy Link
0
Alex Jenter @Adolphe: This is true, thanks for the warning. Indeed the import abilities of CN are a bit limited at the moment, but if you manage to get your notes into Simplenote, you'll get them in CintaNotes as well.

@Petr: Thanks for great questions!
#1: CintaNotes will recognize simple HTML tags like B, I, etc (which are also part of Markdown). But it won't recognize *, **, _ etc, but will keep it. It will be like always editing Markdown source in CintaNotes.

#2: Simplenote doesn't support files, but we use own server to do attachement syncing. So attachments up to 100MB total can be synced. But the attachments won't be accessible in other SN clients, only in CN itself.

#3: Limitations of CN: no Markdown support, no support for pinned notes, no version history support
Limitations of SN: no sections support, no rules support (rules are not synced), no tag hierarchy support, no attachments support.

#4: It depends. In most cases the hard theoretical limit, even where exists, is not useful, meaning that gradual performance degradation imposes a lower practical limit. I'd say here are the approximate figures for barely acceptable performace: max note size (except attachments) ~10MB, max attachment size ~1GB, max notebook size ~4GB. Max size of synced attachments, total: 100MB.
Hope this info helps

Adolphe @Alex Jenter : Simplenote, indeed. I thought of it just after I fired my comment. That could be the answer to that import-export discussion we've just had on CN forum (I'm Clairvaux. Can't change my handle here, apparently.)

However there are important limitations to Simplenote, too. The most important, I think, is they store your notes unencrypted on the cloud ! That's a deal-breaker to me. Even Simplenote warns you against storing sensitive info with them (passwords, banking info, etc).

The other one is, very few Windows note-taking software are compatible with Simplenote.

Adolphe Hi again, Alex. The upper size limits you've given us seem huge. But they are given for "barely acceptable performance", which seems not good enough.

I have just created a Cinta Notes note out of a 683 pages Word document, which I think you'll agree is already way beyond anything realistic. This note, according to Cinta Notes Properties menu, is only 2,4 MB, so way smaller than your 10 MB limit. However, just creating this note took 1' 40", which is way too much to be practical.

A 100-pages Word document (still way beyond the scope of a mere note) produced only a 350 KB note, and took an almost acceptable 3 seconds to create.

As far as volume limits are concerned, wouldn't the notion of "best performance" you developed here :

https://takingnotenow.blo...4023600860

...be a more useful yardstick ? In that comment, you advised a 100 KB average size limit for one note. In my tests, this amount to a 30-pages Word document and takes one second to create, which is as good as instant.

So here we are. Just from the single note perspective, a 30-pages item (which is a long note by any measure) is created almost instantly. And then, we have some wriggle room for exceptionnally long notes up to 100 pages, which will produce a perceptible delay of up to 3 seconds.

However stopped using this tool for every day use until they fix the following because the lack of real text editing facilities in CintaNotes. It's that oldskool. In te meantime I use (now OneNote, Evernote en Pocket).

- A build-in text editor, not just via right-click. With buttoms for bold, italic, ... but also text color, different highlight colors ... even different background colors for the notes ... Not just only yellow for highlighting. Easy and direct accesible. I think this is the *very basic* and *essential* for text-orientated tools. That way you have much better visual control if yoy wish to use colors. And black/white is not that future-proof these days ... at least.

Also (optional) copy images on a webpage selexted text (when there are images) Option for images direct embedded whitin the notes - like a hard copy of that part of a webpage - a 'screenshot', just like Evernote, Pocket and OneNote. Without images, infographics, ... *embedded* in or round the text a whole lot of capturing is simply worthless. 'See image below' ... but there is no image in CintaNotes that shows up. That's simply frustrating and contra-productive. My 2 cent as a power-user.

Alex Jenter @M User: Thanks a lot for your great comment and constructive criticism. I'm glad to say that we're already working on the features that you're talking about, and many of them will be included in the new major release that we're preparing for next year.

Carlo This is indeed a great tool! Using it almost daily for more than 4 years now. Ideal for short text snippets and things you don't want to forget and easily find again, like Windows and other soft-/hardware configuration details.

But I agree - it would reach the next level of usefulness if you could use a decent rich-text editor and (missed most) embed necessary pictures and screen shots instead of linking to them. Saving web-site clippings with original formatting and pictures would be the icing on the cake.

Nevertheless, even today I don't want to miss this tool. It constantly gets better and I hope many people will support its further development by taking advantage of this great offer.

DrTeeth A brilliant program and excellent support.

As I have renewed my licence for more than 3 years, I bought a lifetime licence yesterday.

One gets an increased discount for each year one renews. I have always worried about lifetime licences from small companies as I worry what will happen to the product should the main/only developer become unable to continue his work.

This is the first licence of this type I have ever bought as the product is excellent and under continual development. The developer is also very open to suggestions and feedback.

I'm just a happy user.

Alex Jenter @Carlo Caputo, DrTeeth: Thanks a lot for your kind words! We're constantly doing our best to improve the program, maybe not as fast as you'd wish, but you have to take into account that we have only 2 developers! :)

@Mustang: Thanks for your question. You'll get 2 licenses each 1 year from now. That would only make sense if two people will be using the program!

Kelly Hamblin I am a fool for information managers. I use Cinta Notes for a very specific purpose and for nothing else. I quite like the little thing, but I work at getting the text into an easy to read format because of being limited to the .txt format. It would be a great boon, and I would use it for other purposes if it used .rtf format, so I could use bold, italic, etc., maybe a little color. Anyway I am glad to hear the developer is considering adding this feature.

Having said that, I wouldn't like to see CintaNotes become another Evernote, or OneNote, or grow too big and complicated. The way it is, it is quick and simple. Rtf shouldn't change that very much, but adding too many other things can take it into the realm of bloated pigs where so many other info manager reside.

Lawrence User I have been a longtime user of Resophnotes, and I like the list of note headers on the left panel that I find in resophnotes. Does Cintanotes have an equivalent? All I see is the tag tree, which is nice, but I also want to see the list of headers. Am I missing how to see that?
Jul 21 2017 at 7:13am Copy Link

Adolphe @ Lawrence

The list of headers is what you see on the right panel. By default, it does not look like a list of headers, since it is set to display the first 9 lines of each note. But you can change this.

Go to Options, Notes List, and set Preview Text Lines to zero. Then change the header font to something smaller than the default Arial Bold 10. Uncheck Display Tags, Display Remarks and Display Time of Day. Now, you have a list of headers, instead of extracts of each note stacked one upon another.

Ok - got my reg. code & all is good.

Benjamin User Geo user, I saw on the internet that the pro discount cost arround $50, but it was probably an old discount. I got a free license giveaway of this software. It has no free update, but is still avaible today. I suppose they will realese a big update in at least 6 or 12 months right after the end of the 1 year pro license sold on BitDuJour. It's a way of getting money back for them. If you like their product, you're likely to buy paid upgrade. I'll try to get satisfied with the current version I got for free, and if they sell lifetime license at a decent discount I'll consider buying it.

Alex Jenter @Kelly Hamblin: Thanks a lot for your comment! Indeed , we do our best to keep CintaNotes lean and focused.

@Lawrence User: Adolphe is correct, you can get the list of headers by modifying the settings. However, to see each note's contents you'd have to double-click on it.

@Benjamin User: Sorry to say but we are not offerering Lifetime discounts on BDJ anymore. This turned out to be not profitable in any way for us, unfortunately. Sorry. We work very hard on the product, and a Lifetime license means for us an obligation to work for free for someone. If we continue to sell this obligation this cheap, we won't be able to continue the project.

@geo User: Yes, confirm. Duly noted on rtf. Thanks for the thumbs up!

@Jim Willis: Great that you got the key! The Linux version is definitely on our radar, but this won't be anytime soon, just because of the huge amount of work that is needed.

@Benjamin User: Indeed, the stream of new customers is unfortunately not strong enough to be able to discount Lifetime licenses. But unlike many other software companies, we offer a special discount on upgrading to a Lifetime: for each yearly renewal you get 20% discount on Lifetime upgrade.

Alan I will be the only one using the software. In The Fine Print here it says that it can't be used by the same user concurrently. On the web site it doesn't have that restriction.

This is why I'm asking.

I have my personal Laptop. I also have a work laptop. I would not use the same "database" for both personal and work, but I would be in the software on each laptop at the same time.

Ela S. Is picture clipping possible now?
Jul 19 2018 at 11:54am Copy Link

Alex Jenter @Sara User: No, the new layout is not ready yet. However if you buy now, your license will most probably be still valid for version 4.0 when it comes out.

@Carl Thorpe: because BDJ takes 50% commission. We think that giving out Lifetime licenses for just 25% of the price with no hope of selling anything more to the customer (we have just one product) is not a very wise financial decision. Hope you'll appreciate an honest answer.

@Alan: Sure you can use it concurrently.

@Ela S: unfortunately this feature is still in the plans. I understand its importance, we will put it into work as soon as the version 4.0 with refreshed UI is released.

Is CintaNote able to save the URL info for the location within the page, so that the user can go directly to the quoted text?
Is OneDrive supported? GoogleDrive?

HJ B 1. Is there a pdf manual for this program?

2. If I have 10 different projects, can I direct a capture to a main window that only has the material relevant to the project I am working on?

3. What, if any, limits are there to captured information? E.g., retention of graphics and formatting and length?

Thank you.

Alex Jenter @HJ B: Thank you for your questions!
1. Unforntunately not, but the HTML version is one long page, so it's easy to print the HTML version to PDF.
2. Yes, you can use the Rules to configure how notes are processed after capturing. They can be moved to certain sections and/or tagged with certain tags.
3. For now, only basic formatting is retained. Graphics have to be attached separately as file attachments. CN can handle large notes, but the search will become slow.

Ela S. Really liked CintaNotes, but one needs to buy the expensive Lifetime Pro Version.

Otherwise, after one year the automatic program update overwrites the existing serial number and resets the new version into the free version.

I had to uninstall the new version and reinstall the old one. Bought it three times, happened to me three times.

Supposing that in this offered Pro version, free updates are available again for one year, one has to keep an eye on the installation date.

Smile Version 3.0 was upgraded on 2015/10/05, the current version is 3.13 (2019/08/21)
The upgrade of the purchase can only be upgraded for one year. Some softwares are free upgrades of the minor version number, but this software is not a one-year upgrade period.

Therefore, major upgrades will become very slow, and after the v3 version of this type of software, basically the main functions of the software are almost the same.

It's hard to have a major upgrade, of course, if you want some strange features, then it's another matter.

However, free upgrades for life, it is too expensive, not recommended, and, this software has been free for a limited time, from time to time,

Then you don't need to buy this software.

Please ask the software company to think about it and change the software upgrade strategy.

Also, in the past two years, the update has been slower. Please take care of it. Otherwise, if you see the software update process, you will know that this software can't be bought.

Both are slower to update, and even slower may even forget some of his code.

Thank you.

Jo Ann Rice Why is this listed as a Mac app? There isn't a Mac version anywhere on your website. Please don't give me the "You can use it with Bootstrap or Wine etc." speech, that is not a native Mac app that way either. Please remove that setting unless you have a link to somewhere that an actual Mac version is available.

MojoMan Thought about the lifetime option until I saw the price. Seems a bit pricey at almost 5 times the single year option for a note taking program when I already have several. Always looking for a few features that nobody seems to have.

I'll probably go with 1 year upgrade license and then update in a couple years if there are new features that make it worthwhile.

I do have a question about the inclusion of files. Are files simply attached as a link, or can you store a file within CN? I assume probably just the former. Does CN have any native file viewing capabilties?

Rob Hi MojoMan, regarding file attachments, saw this on the website;
__________

File Attachments
The main point is simple: now you can attach files to notes, and even sync them between your computers.
The files are stored in the compressed form in the notebook itself. Make sure you check this video out to learn how it works.

MojoMan Thanks Rob. I visited the site to see what I coud find out but didn't watch the video... I missed and looked at the feature list but it didn't give much detail. I'll check out video.

I bought an old version some years back and at that time it was a very simple note taking app. It's changed a lot from what I see. Worth another look. Also interested in the answer to your question.

Thanks.

S User @Mojoman : Can you stop calling this a 'note taking' app? With 30+ years of experience as a high-end IT engineer, this makes my heart bleed. Making a text bold or italic is still under a menu in CintaNotes in 2020?!! Color text? Never heard of it. It's unheard of - 2020! This is *not* a Note App ...

MojoMan Sorry if you are offfended, but that is what I use apps such as these for.

You may use it as a programming tool for code snippetw but that's not the use I have for such apps at all. It's not a database, it's not a substitute for OneNote, it's not a document manager, it's not a clip keeper per say. The tile CintaNotes pretty much sums it up. It's for taking notes and keeping memos, docs, reminders, misc data and even organized data but it's not really in any other category.

I've used dozens... OneNote is the most powerful and provides a true notebook paradigm with multiple sections, pages, subpages, create and store documents and notes.... but it is overkill for a quick pop-up reminder and it has a lot of quirks that make it less than ideal. I could go on, but I've yet to find a program on the upper end to be a great organizational tool for keepng notebooks of documents, webpages, scaned docs, etc., and I've yet to find a quick and easy program that has features I want (even in a quiick lightweight note/info organizer. My quest continues.

Adolphe Cinta Notes used to be very good, it still is, but it's definitely lagging behind, and development seems to have stopped.

Looking back, there were times where we had several important updates in a single year. Now there's only one once a year, with one or two very minor feature enhancements.

Where is the major overhaul which was announced long ago ?

Having a look at the roadmap on the website, one can see there are basic, important features which were requested, and planned, 10 years ago.

bvssunnydale It's actually good and useful. I'm experimenting with it as quasi-Zettelkasten. It is sadly true that development is almost non-existent but it's very stable and, as a notetaking app, links, tagging (including auto-tagging), PDF inclusion/indexing, all work very well. Long in the tooth though, but reliable - to anyone obsessed, or merely interested in, info-management apps, OutlinerSoftware is the best site I've seen.

MojoMan I like a lot of the features, but am not happy to hear it is basically an abandoned app. That makes the lifetime license issue final for me.

It does look like it would make a good lightweight note app to quickly clip and organize info without a lot of hassle. I've wasted $ 20 before on things that turned out to be not as useful, but I can see $ 20 of value here.

If anyone knows of anything similar please advise, as I've been searching for an app like OneNote that will handle pdf's natively and have the organizational ability of ON. OneNote is just a few features shy of fantastic... but they are dealbreakers.
