What are people saying about Computerize Your Assets - Extended

Bob S Hi - purchased CYA on 9/25/09 at Bits du jour. Haven't installed yet, but this offer reminded me to.

Is there an option to upgrade from Std. to Extended?

Otherwise, the cost of the two combined is $14.98 (std.) plus $17.95 = $33.00; approaching list price of extended.

Thank you.

Custom Apps Hi Bob,

We did offer a discounted upgrade ($10.00) immediately following that promotion. You must have missed the opportunity.

Email us at admincya2day.com and request the upgrade at the discount price and we will oblige with a special link to make the purchase. Please include your original order number.

Does this help?

CYA Software, Inc. You apparently installed CYA into the "C:\Program Files" folder on your Windows 7 computer.

CYA keeps all data files in sub folders beneath the install folder so there is no danger of losing them over the years. Windows Vista and now Windows 7 began enforcing the UAC rules and now disallow software from writing to *ANY* files in the "C:\Program Files" folder. Imagine what your life would be like if you had a casualty loss and your CYA data files went missing.

If you install CYA into the suggested folder you will have no problems.

Leon Gross Thanks for the fast support replies...

Yes, that is what I did but your program gave me the option of changing the install directory! So I changed it to Program Files which is where every single one one of my other installed programs are installed to and I did not see any warning.

Perhaps you should make the program not permit such a simple change which stops the program from running! Or you could offer the option of saving the data files to a different location where it can easily be backed up. Thanks again, maybe next time...

CYA Software, Inc. Thanks for the reply....

This is already in the works and will be available in the soon to be released new version. As much as we tried to resist and keep everything together Microsoft isn't going to allow it happen. The UAC security is only going to get worse. So we figured we might as well bite the bullet and get it over with.

We hate to expose our customers to this because their home inventory is hopefully a "life long" project. It will probably be migrated to many new computers and each time the risk increases that something will be lost or missed.

The next release of CYA will place all the data files into the appropriate data folders regardless of where the program is installed. Obviously this is in order to be in compliance with the wishes of MS regardless of what we think about it.

Bright Spark A laptop seems desirable for entering inventory data, but I really would rather use a desktop for later work such as updating, editing and printing reports.  Assuming that one purchases two licenses, can one easily transfer data sets between two computers?  Is this also true for multiple households using the extended version?

PG BNax Perhaps I need another cup of coffee. Looked at the website for an answer, but nadda .... Does the license follow the user for non-concurrent use on (number of) machines, or is it by CPU? Also, since taking the inventory would involve mobility, is there any tie-in with smartphones able to read bar codes??

CYA Software, Inc. CYA is personalized and licensed to the user, not a machine. We have no objection to you installing on more than one computer. We investigated providing the ability to read the bar codes some time ago and discovered it really isn't feasible for the following reasons: Hardly no one has a bar code reader attached to their computer The UPC bar code data base is extremely large and nearly impossible to distribute easily The UPC bar code data base would require constant updates to be effective Probably 98% of your personal assets in your home no longer have a UPC bar code attached. It is usually found on the container which is generally discarded after opening. Does this help? Lee

Michael K Bits Du Jour have a habit of bringing to my attention, software I've not found for myself, never knew i needed and then found very useful because I decided to buy it.

I did not mark this particular program down from the BDJ Newsletter as one I was interesting in buying. However, i got the daily offer email this morning and being a Saturday, with more time available than usual, I decided to download the trial anyway and take a look.

Seems i 'broke' the software almost immediately because I got a 'stack' error and the software closed . i opened it again, took a closer look and concluded a lot of thought has been put into the program.

At the offer price I can still make it work for me even if I don't want to inventory the whole house. If I only use it only to keep track of major items or software I've bought or my book library or whatever else in the way of personal possessions need to be recorded and organised for my benefit, this program will do the job for me and so I will buy it.

Were it not on this special offer, I could not justify $50 for the use I will likely make of it and given that I have to make choices but at the offer price, it's not a hard decision.

Everyone wins with the Bits Du Jour format. . I get good software I'd be unlikely to have come across at such good prices and the developers extend their customer base beyond what they would do without these offers.

My thanks to both Bits Du Jour for a great service and continually bring forward great software at super prices. My thanks also to the developers who are sensible enough to not be afraid to cut deeply in to their full headline price which allows them to pull in customers they would otherwise not attract.

(Hope i don't get the 'stack' error again.)

Michael K Hi Lee, - Many thanks for the response. it error happened soon after i opened the trial and I honestly can;t tell you exactly what i was doing other than having a general look around.

I reopened the program and continued my look without any problem.

I could see you'd put a lot of thought and flexibility into your software by allowing user category and item customization for example. I have no concern that should i experience any difficultly, you will sort it out.

I was probably the first buyer as I made my purchase early on this morning and I'm sure I'll get value from your program even if I don't inventory the whole house.

Again, thanks for your concern, your prompt response and for a nice offer on Bits Du Jour.

All the best., Michael

CYA Software, Inc. Michael,

Thanks for the feedback.....

We do take a great deal of pride in CYA, and what it has evolved to. Many of the features came about by listening, and responding to our users comments and suggestions. What our users feel is important. matters a great deal to us. We do listen. We take the comments and suggestions very seriously, and in many case implement them.

Your first comment suggested that Computerize Your Assets probably won't be capable of fulfilling all your requirements. We would be delighted to hear more from you regarding your perceived short comings in CYA. We certainly have no objection to hearing from you here, however, would you kindly also include an Email to us at either admincya2day.com or supportcya2day.com so we can log it into our system?

Kind regards. We look forward to hearing more from you.

Michael K Hi Lee,
I think I mus have put my first comment badly if I gave you the impression that I was saying your program would not cover all my needs.

Quite the contrary, your program seems very comprehensive, thorough and easy to use. What I meant was, I may not be up to the effort required to inventory the whole house and only do part - major items or things I want to catalog but given the comment above from Lee Anne whose friend lost everything in a fire, i may need to rethink that and make a comprehensive job of it after all.

i think I will be very satisfied with my purchase of your program CYA and I can tell you offer a responsive customer service which is always gratifying to know.

Thanks

CYA Software, Inc. Michael,

Thank you for the clarification.

Keep in mind you aren't required to do it all at one time. We view it as a life long project.

The contents of your home is constantly changing. It is, however, entirely up to you how much detail, effort, and the frequency of the effort you put into the management and documentation of your assets.

True story:
During hurricane Charlie in 2004, my neighbor across the street had a huge oak tree limb penetrate his roof causing the family to relocate for approximately 3 months while repairs were being made. One week after moving back into the house it caught fire. My neighbor, by the way, is a preacher.

We suffered some damage as well so I personally can relate to what is involved with dealing with insurance adjustors.

I can assure you that we take the design and implementation of our software very seriously. We make every effort to provide a home inventory software program that allows our users to have the best information available for the insurance adjustors, AND, be first in line (if there is one) with that information.

Our new slogan is "Don't leave home without one".

CYA Software, Inc. Everyone -

I forgot to mention one thing that I feel is very important in my last post. It is crucial you BACKUP your work every time you make significant changes to your personal asset catalog.

The backup procedure built into CYA is second to none. It creates a compressed self extracting executable file containing the program files, data files, images and attachments.

This EXE file should then be copied onto external storage media and kept in a safe place. We highly recommend the use of a USB flash drive. They are universal, inexpensive and reusable. Believe it or not I personally carry mine on my key chain.

Running this EXE file on a new computer allows you to completely install your copy of CYA onto a new computer. It will even register itself and install the Start Menu shortcuts for you. Within a couple of minutes you will be up and running CYA, with all your hard work and data in place on your new computer. I personally am not aware of any other windows software program that is capable of doing this for you.

Just some thoughts while I'm revved up. Hope you don't mind.

A few minutes ago, I sent an email to your support regarding inability to install the application on my laptop after having just (mistakenly) installed in on my main computer.

The "new" laptop install pretends to Register fine, and even flashes a message confirming registration. But at next startup, I am told again that the laptop installation is only a Trial, and am met with a further request to insert the Registration number. And thus cycle repeats. What is the problem?

On rare occasions anti virus programs can be a overly aggressive and prevent required entries being written to the windows registry. Unfortunately they usually fail to inform the user, or the software application that an action has been taken. When it comes to anti virus applications I am sometimes uncertain which is worse - The Disease OR the Cure.

We have never been asked to furnish a pre-defined data base as part of the Trial. I guess the answer to your inquiry would have to be there is not one available. We certainly could put something together for special requests.

Also, remember, the Trial is much more than a Demo. It is a live, full featured working application. The only restriction is that it does quit working after the trial period has expired.

There is a link to the document attachments from the catalog browse. I don't see where the link is available from the individual item detail screen. I have passed this on to development for review.

I'll go ahead and answer your other post here if that is ok.

Could you please be more specific about exactly which report you are referring to? There are 17 reports available from that menu. I will be happy to look into it.

Will P Lee, I get Peter R's point--having some dummy data load up with a trial installation would allow you to play with the software (to see what it does) without having to go through the data input process. I think that's why most database products come with sample data sets.

For my part, I'd like to see a demo on your web site (or even on YouTube) of the setup wizard in action, as well as the process for adding a new item after the wizard has been run--that would go a long way toward demonstrating the usability of the program's interface (always my concern with database applications).

There's also a survey review of online home inventory apps:

You are probably correct about using "EURO" instead of the actual currency symbol. I'm thinking we had used that symbol (_) originally but discovered some of the fonts back several years ago did not have that symbol available and it raised havoc.

The revision history page is definitely out dated - please forgive us. We just recently released v2.7 and haven't caught with all the infrastructure. We decided to get the update out so you could all have it and we would continue to bring the remaining details into focus.

I would like to comment on the links you posted regarding the reviews. Thank you for that.

We discussed having an "online" version of Computerize Your Assets and just couldn't (still can't for that matter) come to terms with the risk we would be subjecting our users to. In an earlier post I alluded to our vision is to have our users "first in line" with the "best information" available when it came time to face the insurance adjustor.

We simply can not make that kind of commitment with an online version. What if you don't have an internet connection? I'm reminded of my own personal experience with the hurricane(s). We were without power and utilities for a week. What good would my "online" inventory have been to me.

Additionally, the internet is such an anonymous way of doing business. Why in the world should I, or anyone else for that matter, trust someone else as the custodians of my/their *precious* data. What guarantee do I have they will be there when I need them. What if they suddenly go out of business? If I can't trust anyone with my data why in the world would anyone trust us with theirs? These are just some "food for thought" items to ponder the choice is made.

Our software is designed for one purpose - To protect *YOU*.

David McCartney It is astounding, as it is dumbfounding, when you consider that at least 50% of all the comments/inquires on these product threads revolve around licensing questions and issues.

Wouldn't make more sense for BitsDujour to provide vendors with a licensing form to be filled out in advance of their software listing? This information could be posted with the product info up top.

There certainly is enough experience garnered from past threads to provide a detailed matrix which would adequately address the majority of licensing questions and conditions.

Chance of a such proactive remedy actually happening: nil.

Michael K Licensing and upgrades are important issues.

Information is invariably put in the policy section of each offer page, but if clarification is called for or potential buyers want to ask a developer to consider extending their licensing, I personally see nothing wrong in that so long as it's done in a respectful manner.

I like to see all manner of dialogue, questions and responses as it all helps me to decide whether to buy or not.

just goes to show there is a diverse range of opinions here and I think that calls for some tolerance.

David McCartney The inference is that both vendor and Bit's Dejour would sell more product if the questions of licensing were spelled out clearly from the get-go.

Missing and unclear policies which require further clarification wastes everyone's time, and ultimately cost sales.

Not trying to kill dialog.

kaj I did not have time to review the software but something to consider if part of the software. In some states part of the claims process is to declare a replacement value. In most cases, the easiest way to complete the requirement is to use the internet to find a like-kind item and record it.
If you do not have a field for replacement cost, date and url listing, you may want to consider it. As a former adjuster if I received a list of lost items, fully documented with pics and the replacement cost justification, I would settle the claim much faster.
If I was using your software to file a claim, I would want to be able to check the items lost/stolen, enter a date and show justification for the replacement cost and print the report for the adjuster. That would allow for any kind of loss/claim, theft, catastrophic , etc. The adjuster would be grateful.
Just a thought.

Even though Rogers point is well taken I would like to address your comment as well.

Question: When was the last time you read the "entire" EULA (End User License Agreement) for any software license you have purchased?

Question: Did you understand every word of the EULA?

Question: Have you "ever" read a EULA that is spelled out "clearly"?

Most of what is contained in the EULA is simply legal jargon, prepared by attorneys to protect the company. Mmmmm.... another meaning for "CYA"

Having the ability to address these types of inquiries in a venue such as this is rewarding in other ways. It gives the user the ability to perhaps see a bit of the "human" side of the company they are dealing with. In contrast, it gives the vendor an opportunity to determine what their potential customers feel is important.

We are the vendor in this case and we don't mind responding to these types of inquiries. To us it is a "WIN - WIN" scenario.

I ask this with all due respect. Why are you seemingly so bitter about the content of the comments? I personally have had a rewarding experience communicating with our "potential" customers in a way not usually available to me.

Best regards,

Great suggestion. The best place to do this would be during the "Casualty Loss Setup" procedure ( Reports Specialty Reports Casualty Reports Casualty Loss Report Setup ). We could add a field to the process for the replacement value.

We probably just assumed the replacement value would be a value the adjustor would take care of.

I have passed this on to the development team. Thanks again for a great suggestion.

David McCartney Although asked to take my discussion to another thread, I will respond to Lee as he posed a question.

No bitterness, no suggestion of constraining a vendor's interchange, etc. I am only suggesting more clarity in a format which is uniform and consistent. After that, let the conversations begin.

I am sure a lot of potential purchasers who shy from posting often stand back and wait for questions to be answered. Too often, I would suggest, they can't or don't monitor the thread, the deal passes, and the sale is lost.

Rick Truell Michael K (and others):

I want to add to Lee Ann's friends story and strongly encourage you to go to the effort to do a comprehensive inventory of your belongings...because you just never know when disaster is going to strike, and you never know how little time you're going to have to save even yourself, let alone belongings or inventory records (computerized or otherwise).

In Northern Alberta, Canada, there's a little town called Slave Lake, with a population of a little under 10,000. Last weekend, May 14/15, was a typical spring weekend...sunny and warm, with a small enough breeze to keep it from getting too hot. Sure, there were a couple of fires burning just outside the town, but that's not unusual for that part of the province and they're not usually difficult to put out. However, the small breeze suddenly and unexpectedly blasted up to over 100KM/h, causing the fires to jump over two highways, and in less than an hour, the residents of Slave Lake found themselves in deadly danger. 10,000 people in Slave Lake and the surrounding area were under mandatory emergency evacuation orders, and with barely enough time to grab the kids, the pets and the car keys, everyone made it to the evacuation area with, almost unbelievably, no injuries or deaths.

But while the people of Slave Lake got out safely, the town didn't fare so well. Between 30% and 40% of the town has been destroyed and over 300 houses have burnt to the ground...the only thing to indicate houses existed are the concrete steps leading up to where the doors used to be. Obviously the people that owned those houses have lost *everything*, since about the only things they had time to save were the clothes on their backs.

How many of these people do you think have comprehensive lists of all their replaceable belongings? How many of them are even going to be able to remember all the things they had...even after they're given time to recover somewhat from the trauma. For that matter, how many of the businesses that burned down have got comprehensive, off-site records of all the assets they lost?

Lee Hydechuk from CYA Software, Inc., when talking about the database backup he keeps on a USB flash drive, said "Believe it or not I personally carry mine on my key chain." What an incredibly great idea...if the residents of Slave Lake had done the same, then as they were grabbing the car keys to save themselves, they would also have been saving their household inventory, which would be invaluable in making the claims they now have to. I wouldn't have thought about keeping the backup on a flash drive attached to my key chain...but I sure will be now!!!

And now, I have to go...I want to be sure to get CYA before the deal expires :-)

P.S. I mentioned earlier that there were no injuries or deaths related to the Slave Lake evacuation and fire. News was released today (5/21) that there was *one* death...although no details have been released yet, a helicopter crashed into the lake and the pilot died. Presumably the helicopter was involved in the fire-fighting effort and the pilot was attempting to get a load of water when something went horribly wrong.

Will P @Lee (about an online version):

I wasn't actually promoting the idea--I just included that link since the reviewer raised a few interesting issues about security and permanence of your data, same as you did. I suspect that some people were wondering about online options, so I thought that discussion would be helpful to their decision making with regard to this offer.

FYI, I bought one. Now I've got to find the time to populate it (it would be easier if I had a laptop!).

One thought: Can CYA look up online and populate item fields based on a UPC bar code? That would make the data entry go much faster! I've seen smart phone apps that will do this for CD and DVD catalogs, so why not a PC-based property inventory app like CYA?

It was our own personal experiences with hurricanes in 2004 that encouraged us to develop CYA.

CYA Software, Inc. Will - I did overlook your question. I need a little more caffeine I guess.

We looked into this in the very beginning but it just didn't make any sense to attempt this. Consider these points:

1. To access a data base online you would be required to "always" have an internet connection.
2. Any pricing retrieved from such a data base would not be accurate as all that is available is MSRP (Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price)
3. The data base could be shipped with the install but it is extremely large and would require updates every time you used CYA.
4. The majority of your most significant personal assets that will be cataloged don't even have the bar codes available any longer. ( jewelry, art work, collectibles, clothing etc.)
5. Every user would be required to have a bar code reader

As you can see, there really is no reward for the effort that would required to accommodate reading UPC bar codes. Believe me when I say it would have already been done if it were something that would work and be useful for our users. We liked the idea a lot until we really researched it.

Does this help?

Will P Lee - responses to your points:

1. I always do have an internet connection at home, as do the majority of households in the U.S.

2. Pricing isn't the big data entry issue--it's filling in the item descriptions, and those would go faster with a UPC lookup. We'd still have to enter prices based on the receipt or online research, but at least the item would be in the database!

3. There's no UPC database on my phone, so why would there need to be one on my computer? I'm betting that the UPC data already exists online--all CYA would have to do is tap into it.

4. True. But all my CDs and DVDs do have UPCs right on the case (and most newer books have them on the dust jacket), and by sheer quantity that makes them significant (it's not the "big stuff" that takes so much time. Also, this would make it much easier to add new things as they're purchased.

5. A bar code reader isn't required--just enter the UPC digits (10 digits is a lot less than typing in "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest") or, for a book, include ISBN lookup (all books have those). My phone's app allows for either data entry method (either scan or type; but then, my phone has a camera).

Which begs the question: Couldn't CYA read a bar code from a digital photo, just like my camera's app does? This would allow a user to just take a photo of each bar code (in macro focus mode) with a digital camera, then CYA could "batch" process a folder of photos at a time. That would be cool, and would be more likely to be used by my adult children for their own stuff than manual entry (I'll never get them to slow down enough to do that). The sooner young families start on something like this, the more likely they are to be life-long customers, after all.

Hi Lee, I bought CYA last time it was offer on Bits in May.although
I did not yet get around to installing the software as at the time.

I was in the process of changing computers and then overlooked it. Seeing this promotion reminded me to do the install, which I did this morning.

I have two reasons for writing this post:

1) During the last promotion there was an extensive "conversation" in which I participated and you were very responsive which was a large contributing factor in me buying your program. I would encourage Bits users to click on "load older comment" above as their their questions may already be answered in these prior posts.

2) It is my experience that many Bits users, included me, are sensitive to the cost of keeping software versions up to date.

In installing your software this morning, I note that it is up to version 2.9 and there has been 1 or maybe 2 updates since I purchased in May. This is encouraging as we gain confidence when software is regularly maintained and updated.

That said, I and other active Bits buyers are as I already mentioned are sensitive to the cost of keeping up to date. As you have a policy of the next major version cost being chargeable with a 40% discount it looks like that may not be too far off as you are currently at version 2.9.

My question is therefore, what will be your policy regarding purchasers of this Bits promotion and a purchase made in May which mine fell into?

I do hope you are feeling generous and we will be upgraded without charge :-)

Thanks

Michael

I'm not really certain I completely understand your question as you have already discovered your May purchase was automatically brought current when you finally installed it. Version 2.9 is the current release.

If a free update is released for any product you own you should install it. Often there will be subtle bug fixes that won't be mentioned even if there were a release history.

J S Hi Lee,

My question(s) is just to ask: do you know when version 3 is planned for release?

Reason for asking: Because you are already at version v2.9, (As there is NO mention in the BdJ Policy section that Bitsdujour buyers will be entitled to a free upgrade to v3) I PRESUME I will have to pay for v3 (as it will be classed as a major upgrade) and I'd just like to know approximtely how long I can use the current version before i'll have to pay for the next version?

Michael R. I just bought your program, because I think it might be useful to have important item-data be stored in case...

When starting your program I am wondering, if I could save the data to a certain directory choosen by myself. I tried, but I found no way to do that.

The background is that on my harddisk I have one partition for the programs and one for my data-files. The backup-restore-handling is quite different on the two partitions. (After some time when I know what additional programs I want to stay installed on the program-partition, I make a restore on that parition (to have a clear system), only install the programs I want to keep and than make a backup again for the next round). My data-paratition is only backuped and - as long as there occurs no severe error - never restored. The obvious reason is that, when restoring it, all changed data are gone.

I tried to change the execution-directory to the data-directory I wanted the datas to stay in (which works for most programs, which do not allow explicite directory-entries), but with CYA I get the message 'Data files can not be located...'.

Thinking about this message, I suppose CYA looks now inside the desired data-directory and - of course - can't see the expected files there. So perhaps you can tell me which files it expects, so I could just copy them to there?

Way better would be of course, if the directory could be explicetly changed by the user himself. Perhaps this option is somewhere and I just have overseen it? Or could you implement this it in a soon update? I suppose it would be no big thing to implement but very useful...

[ I have seen that there is a backup-function and shortly called it. As it seem the backup-directory can be changed. Not so nice is, it does not remember the change, so next times backup have to be done you have to reenter the change again... ]

Thank you...

Michael K @ Developer - Lee

Hi Lee,

From your support forum, I see a user wrote saying they could not find a way to import the data when your program, CYA was updated to a newer version. He was updating version 2.5 to version 2.7 and could not find a restore function in 2.7 that imported the data he had backed up from version 2,5

All the programs I know import prior data that was input automatically and I was surprised to see the question. I was even more surprised at the response given to him which was:
:
"We have responded to you in a private Email hoping we can straighten this problem out for you."

May I please ask why it was necessary to write privately to the user in the "hope" of straighten it out? Why not an open explanation of how data is moved from one version to the next?

And why is it not an automatic process that the program does itself when new versions are released? If the current version still does not update data automatically, can you please explain what we as users have to do when new versions of CYA are issued to bring data into it.

On another matter, I see "JS" has also asked about version 3 upgrade being chargeable or free of charge as I also did since the program is already on version 2.9.

When I asked the question further back in the conversation, you responded that there was plenty of room before moving to version 3 as you said the numbering designation is :
XXX.XXX.XXX ( MAJOR.MINOR.BUILD)

As the current version is 2.9.(BUILD???), by your own numbering explanation, it actually does not even provide for a single minor upgrade before you have no alternative but to move to version 3 and therefore the question of whether I, who bought in May at the last promotion as well as those who buy today, will be able to upgrade to version 3 free of charge or not?

I hope the points I make are clear enough but if not, I would be happy to clarify further.

Thanks

There are no planned "PAID" upgrades within the next year regardless of what the version number is.

Does this help?

CYA Software, Inc. Michael R - We have wrestled with this issue since the introduction of Windows Vista and UAC.

Microsoft kept changing the rules forcing us to jump through bunches of hoops regarding where data files could be kept and accessed. They did things like allowing the files to be placed into certain folders, but then, at run time, forbid the software to access them.

In the end, in order to protect you and your data, we put the files where Microsoft says to put them. At least this way our software will be allowed to access them.

We would much rather have our customers be upset because they are unable to keep their data where they want it as opposed to being angry because it got lost. Trust me when I say, 'WE ARE ON YOUR SIDE".

CYA Software, Inc. Michael K -

The reason we responded privately to the user you make reference to is quite simply that we did not wish to embarrass him in a public forum.

His issues resulted from things he had done himself which in turn caused the software to be incapable of "UPDATING" its own data files. Do you honestly believe we would release an update and it not update the files?

We actually ended up connecting remotely with this user and fixed it for him even though he is the one that created the situation. Can you name any other software company that will do that for you?

Regarding version 3, I believe I have answered that satisfactorily in my reply to J S.

The only thing that can be "localized" is the formatting of currency. There are no plans to localize CYA to any language beyond that.

1. Does the backup function include photo and video files?
2. when I open the backup file from let's say a usb stick, does the software need to be installed on the computer I'm using. I ask this in case when my computer is destroyed in a fire (or whatever) and I don't have a computer with CYA installed when I'm talking with my insurance company.

CYA Software, Inc. Peter B.-

The CYA backup function is designed to provide you complete confidence that you will never lose any data, images or videos. That being said, it only works if you use it.

How many times have you bought a new computer and then spent an untold number of hours moving all your important data from your old computer to your new computer?

How many times have you lost important data making such a move?

When you perform a backup within CYA, all program files, data files, image files and video files are gathered up and placed into appropriate compressed ZIP files. A single, self extracting executable file is created suitable for you to copy to your favorite storage device. A USB flash drive is perfect and is what we recommend to all out users.

In a nutshell, when you execute the above executable backup file on your new computer, the components will be extracted into a folder of your choice and then an install EXE file is executed by you. This install EXE behaves very similar to the original installer in that all the correct folders are created. This includes all the "Start Menu" entries and othe required shortcuts. The big difference is that instead of empty files being created, all your appropriate data and other files are placed into these folders,

Once installed, when you run CYA the first time on the new computer, CYA will recognize this and offer to "register" it for you on the new computer. It actually remembers your User Name and Registration Key.

We are unaware of "ANY" software application that does this for you. It is all explained in greater detail in the CYA help.

CYA "DOES NOT" have a separate function to synchronize data between multiple computers. Obviously the backup feature can be used for this however.

Does this help?

Jim Willis I guess I'll have to buy this. Early last summer I was evacuated from my home for 7 days due to a forest fire. Knock on the door at 8a.m..
Gotta leave ASAP. What to take with me? Couldn't take my computers-not enough room in my car. Settled on a netbook that I hardly ever used & 2 ext. hard drives with backups of all my OS's.
Watched fire's progress from motel 10 miles away & was sure my home was gone. Sure, I've got Ins., but they won't pay for all my stuff like computers and electronic equipt. and all the old wood puzzle collection that I have. I thought about not having any record of all that stuff while watching the fire getting closer to my home.
Got very lucky and my home survived with absolutely no damage.
But it did drive home the need to catalogue my belongings.
Hopefully this program will help me do that.
Thanks BDJ and CYA.

Jim McGowan Lee,

Can you tell me in what format the data is stored? Or at least to what format(s) can the data be exported? Is it proprietary or a more universal file format? (E.g., sqlite, XML, etc.)

Also, limiting the data store to the Windows User directory? To be honest, I don’t have one program on my computer currently that does not allow me to move the data store. Admittedly on a few I had to edit the .INI file in order to do so, but to lock it in to one location and claim it is for the customer doesn’t quite compute here. It could easily be made user-configurable so that the more advanced users could locate the data where they prefer and the more inexperienced users could just leave it as is.

So could I relocate the data store by editing either an INI file or the Windows registry, if needed?

Thank you.

CYA Software, Inc. Jim McGowan -

It wouldn't be that difficult to allow the user to place the data files in a location of their choosing. To the best of my knowledge we have never been asked for this as an option in the past so probably never came up as an issue. If a user should insist on re-locating them, we can assist and inform them what to edit.

The data file are a proprietary structure and there is no ODBC or other connection available for a user to access them except through the application.

Have we failed to provide appropriate features within the software that an external view is required?

Jim McGowan Hi Lee. Thank you for the reply!
The data file are a proprietary structure and there is no ODBC or other connection available for a user to access them except through the application.
Lee, thank you for the reply! I did notice on your web site that the data can be exported to CSV, which is probably all that is required - hopefully. As XML is fast becoming the standard for many such exports and is more universally importable (Is that even a word?!!?), that might be a good future feature.
Have we failed to provide appropriate features within the software that an external view is required?
It is not an external view I seek, but a way to move my data if the need ever arises. For example, if your software were to take a new path at some point that a user does not wish to follow, they should have the ability to move that data to another application. (E.g., one similar program I used in the past came under new ownership and began including adware/malware in all program update setup files. I wanted out from there but my data was basically trapped. And in two other cases programs I was using simply stopped all development and the result was effectively the same: once again my data was trapped in an unusable and un-exportable format.)

BTW, I've probably been using software for much longer than many posting here, which is why I have had the misfortune to see this kind of thing on more than one occasion. (Read: I am pretty ancient!)

I hope that clears up why I asked those questions Lee, and I do appreciate your frank answers. :)

I'm no expert in the politics of MS, but currently I can't remember any program which seems to have these difficulties.

S B Lee,

I've purchased a license, and look forward to CYA.

The proprietary data format would be an *absolute deal breaker* without the CSV export mentioned by Jim McGowan.

Have you provided "appropriate features within the software ..."?

That is never possible, because we users want to manipulate, manage, and view our data in our own particular ways and we want to manage how we do it. Not practical or possible to even start to support that.

Further, that's not even the question to ask. The real issue is whether CYA, or any software, of whatever quality, should stand between us and our data.

In this case, it's my data. I need the data that CYA uses to interoperate with my own software and SQL Server--to integrate with other data and the artifacts of my life.

Of course I can certainly do this by duplicating the data and maintaining two sets, one for CYA and another for everything else, but what a waste of CYA and all the effort that went into making CYA a great product.

It's a very important issue. Perhaps not important right now for most people, but it certainly will be in the future.

Thanks for your good product!

The language in our EULA is there merely for our protection and it reserves us the right to charge for a major upgrade if we decide the feature set of the upgrade warrants a charge.

To answer your question: At this time we do not anticipate any upgrade charges for at least a year. Even if there is an upgrade charge you will certainly have the choice of upgrading or remaining on the version you have at that time.

CYA Software, Inc. Jesus

This article in our KB explains how to move CYA to a new computer. This is the process you need to follow to move back and forth between computers.

Does this help?

J S Dear Lee,

I would like to purchase a copy as a GiFT for a relative BUT PayPal (& Plimus) DO NOT provide such a feature.

However Google Checkout DOES offer the USER Option to License as a different name to what is on the credit card or buy as a Gift and I believe they offer a similar low fee structure to PayPal.

Question: Would You consider using Google Checkput as an User Optional Alternate to PayPal?

Of Course the Bitsdujour chaps generally allowed these User Options too but from your posts above it sound like buying through Bitsdujour has been squeezed out.

Tortuga Yes, I've been trying to access the site even before the promo went live, unsuccessfully.
Wanted to see if there was a new version, since I bought this during last promo, on Feb.2013. The version available then was 2.10 from Feb.2012!
Upgrades were free until the next major version. But everywhere I looked, haven't seen any new version, minor or major. If the company is doing another promo, surely there is a new version, and all those who bought last time don't get any upgrade at all :(
Peace

CYA Software, Inc. Please accept our apologies for the www.cya2day.com web site not being accessible. Our web host provider chose today to migrate our accounts to a new server. Which, unfortunately, is physically located in another location.

You've heard of "Murphys Law"? It now also appears we are locally experiencing some internet outages. We contacted our ISP and have been informed an accident involving some of their equipment happened overnight and they have dispatched crews to resolve the problem. So please forgive us if we are unable to respond to message in a timely manner. In order to write this response I had to take a laptop to a local business and use their WIFI.

I have the strangest feeling today is not not going to be a good day.

Lee Hydechuk

Mariusz Lewandowski 1. PL letters do not show in drop-down boxes. They look okay only when selected, not on the list.
2. Cannot get rid of keyboard shortcuts - e.g. Alt+e forces jump to beginning of the Category list when I want to type Polish "e" letter.
3. Fields height too small to see accents.
4. Cannot edit drop-down lists in other way than by wizard.

I admit I played only 5 minutes with the app. Are there any options to configure the above issues?

TopDog I have the extended version 2.9. It has never been able to check for updates via the menu within the program. When I go to the site I see version 2.1 listed as the latest version. What version is this offer on BitsDuJour for?

Daniel Gaudet I've purchased the software and received the license key, but every time I copy/paste it, it says that it's now registered to me, then it opens the registration box again. When I quit and go back it, it's showing me an Evaluation Reminder.

Any help would be much appreciated.

_*_ It appears CYA is no longer supported, as it is no longer able to be downloaded.

Too bad as I needed a download of the Extended version since mine is gone. I now have a full purchased license key for the Extended version with no program to install. :o(

CYA Software, Inc. Greetings, Peter. While we do not announce release dates, we will strive to offer existing license holders a discounted path to upgrades. That includes those who purchase through Bits. We have had a relationship with them for years, and have chosen to begin marketing efforts for version 3 through them. Best!

Timothy Wallace I wanted to download a demo, so I can evaluate the product before purchase, however, all of the download links on your Website throw up a 404 error. This is a concerning state of affairs.

CYA Software, Inc. Hello Timothy. We are aware of problems with the existing site, and that is why we are migrating attention to www.cyaon.com for a clean start. You can download the demo for extended (version 2.1) right here at Bits: http://www.bitsdujour.com...d/download

Timothy Wallace Another commenter noted there is a version 3 in the works. Apparently, current purchasers are funding the re-design. Maybe the bits deal is driving traffic to the site, and oversubscription is resulting in a refused connection....

CYA Software, Inc. Peter R - The demo is several years old, and we are working on an updated one. The demo is of the extended version, and will run on Windows 10, so we have not updated it in quite some time. When you purchase we manually send you an unlock code that will license you for the version you purchase (either Personal or Extended). There is nothing else to download. We have not migrated to an automated system yet, because we want to ensure we protect the security of our existing users' data even if it means we are still a bit behind the technology curve. Does that help?

Timothy Wallace Is there a way to store the database file on a network server, so I can access it from more than one computer? Alternatively, is there a way to backup the program database so I can work with the file from another computer? I am thinking I would like to add items using my laptop, so I can go room-to-room, but access the information from my desktop, where I can more easily scan and add documentary items. Thanks.
