MK I agree with Eugene. Great product - I compared it with other desktop search engines and it found text the others didn't.
But "After you purchase Copernic Desktop Search it may be used for 12 months and will not function after that unless you renew your subscription" has meant I stick to the older version. Good grief - at least stop updates & upgrades after 12 months, but let it still function.

Eugene Saltz MK - Exactly, I am sticking with the older versions. I have used Copernic many, many years - and upgraded over time - but no more. When the older versions no longer work with newer Microsoft software, I will use other desktop search options.

Dierk Also unhappy with their new subscription program - with the further note that it is a tiered product now, with the "base" price leaving out useful-to-important features.

To be fair, the version offered here IS the "Full" version - all features included - hence the $55+ price tag (before 40% off): in that regard, this is a relatively good deal.

Still, as others have remarked, am sticking with the previous version for now - and likely for as long as it continues to work (2 Pro Licenses). Have been looking at alternatives and while none are "perfect" they do at least exist. Have even considered simply Importing or Linking files with RightNote Pro, which has its own internal full-text search engine AND is capable of Indexing Linked external files.

Alas, Subscription priced software seems to be a trend. Quicken is another program we have used for years which has switched over. Most of the competition for it is Web based (and a lot of that is 'Free'). But don't want our Financial data entrusted to a web service: at least here MoneyDance is a viable alternative.

Paul Companies are so out of touch, the only reason subscriptions have been successful thus far is because not EVERYTHING is a subscription, people only have so much income and they can’t afford to have everything in their lives become a subscription. Companies like this jump and say, it’s working for Adobe let’s give it a go...... Adobe is a different breed of software, I could never see paying an annual subscription for something that searches files on my computer........

Sputnik I have bought Copernic Desktop Search 6 years ago but I have used it only for a couple of months.

It is a good software but it must do frequent scans to update its database and I found that very annoying. So, since then, I use 3 different free softwares to do all my searches : Everything, Agent Ransack and Super Finder XT, each of them for different and specific purposes, and that covers all of my needs.

I know that it is very possible that these software would not be sufficient for many people but it may be so for many other people, everyone is its own judge in this matter.

For those who like a software like Copernic but don't like the new subscription basis, you could check for X1 Desktop Search, I tried it a couple of years ago and found it at this time much more powerful than Copernic.

Its price seems to be 96$, which is very expensive, but it seems to be a lifetime licence with updates free for a year only. You should however verify this with someone working in this company. If it is so and that you changed the software once each 4 years, it would cost you only about 25$ a year compared to Copernic who would cost 55$ year after year.

Understand me : I dont say that Copernic is no good, it is in fact a very good software but at an actual cost of 55$ a year, it is not far from being as expensive as Microsoft's Windows itself, which is a far more elaborate and complex software...

Benjamin User Well, I was tempted to buy it. I already own DeskSearch Pro and FileLocator Pro which are great but not as user friendly as Copernic Desktop Search seems to be but since it does not allow to use the program after 12 months, I won't buy it. Of course, most people tend to upgrade whenever there is a new version but unless they do really offer new version I see no point in buying annual subscription for a search software that has nothing new to offer.

Leland Whitlock I was considering buying it for the first time until I saw it had become a subscription. That was it no purchase from me. I have tools that will get the job done for free. Sorry Copernic but I suspect this may be the beginning of the end for you...

Dierk X1 Search does indeed run $96 per license, including 1 year of support. It also does NOT support Thunderbird, which is a primary appeal to Copernic, even though T-Bird does have its own built-in Search function.

Part of the Cost problem with Copernic is that it is licensed Per Machine: therefore usage on both a Desktop & Laptop requires buying 2 licenses. Actually HAVE 2 Pro licenses, but a) they were available at a fair discount each time we purchased, and b) we were not "locked" into HAVING to purchase upgrades Every Year.

Support for Thunderbird seems to be vanishing, but there are precious few alternatives for anyone wanting a Non-MicroSoft Desktop email program - and of the ones that are available, Good Luck in finding an Indexed Search app that recognizes their file format.

Current fall-back for Copernic would be Archivarius 3000. Price is fair, and product supports a good range of file formats - but last update was Sep 2017, so some concern for its future, plus the interface is dated - especially within the "Help" document which lacked an internal Search function (as far as I was able to determine...).

We should not expect companies to provide software with NO cost to the end user (even though clearly a handful do so), and there obviously needs to be a balance between Pricing Too High (or Too Low) and being able to Stay In Business.

Have a lot of sympathy for the small developer, having once worked for such a company - but a Subscription based app needs to offer a Compelling feature set against its competitors, including a reasonable "Personal License" which permits installation on at least 2 systems, does not require a CONSTANT Internet connection (my laptop is often used in locations which lack wifi even in today's world), and does not impose TOO Severe of restrictions on system upgrades & re-installations.

All, of course, FWIW & IMHO.....

Rodina User I have been using copernic since version 3. Will use version 6, as subscription model is not acceptable for me.
I prefer File Locator Pro and hope they will not follow the subscription trend

Benjamin User Lookeen is also great on PC, especially when you're looking for email. I use it along with DeskSeach and FileLocator Pro. The latter one was described as a must-have according to review and it uses special coding that allow you to find more files and compare them with others...

Just give the file I mentioned above a look and I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
