David Lawrie 50% + CPU use on the intro screens after installation?

There were lots of reports of high CPU use on v3 when indexing, but I didn't get that far. I've used v2 successfully.

v4- there are 4 intro. screens. I heard my fan start screaming- 50% + CPU as I stepped thru these. Froze on the last- no response to 'Done'.

Running as admin on Win 7 32 bit Ult.

Farhang STILL no sort by relevance...

I have not tried ver 4 (just started) but have worked with ver 3 before and I am always looking for good desktop search.

A few good things about it:This is a very good price for paid desktop search; Copernic has removed the web search tab in ver 4 and that's a great addition by subtraction; its general index was quite good in ver 3 (and I hope it hasn't dipped in 4). Its index was bigger on my computer than X1 Desktop search (another good but paid software) for the same number of files. Overall, I found it just about as good as and among the best of any user paid friendly desktop search.

What is extremely disappointing is that in version 4 (like all previous versions), there is no SORT by RELEVANCE.

If I want pure search of file name, I use faster non-indexing software. But if you have an indexed search, I am baffled that there is no real sort. I have over 10,000 pdf that I need indexed and searched. (By the way, they should make it MUCH faster and easier to batch exclude file types instead of having to click on every single one to remove). Without a sort by relevance, the search is rather pointless

@copernic sales: is there anywhere on your road-map a real plan for sort by relevance?

In the meantime, I keep using the FREE but sortable DocFetcher. It is nowhere as sophisticated as Copernic or X1 but hasthe most important feature.

Faisal Humayun So, I'm already a customer of version 4. Unfortunately, as other customers have noted, the CPU spiking and thrashing is significant on Win 7 64 bit instances ( despite several hotfixes since initial release). And if the reversal of "sort by relevance" wasn't bad enough, there is no longer a windows taskbar search toolbar, which is a real tragedy, since this was primarily how I performed rapid searches.
Version 4 could have been a really great opportunity to provide social search services (twitter, facebook), but ... nothing.
I would suggest a pass on this version (or invest into version 3).

Mr_Yeh Licencing per computer for non-commercial users (students etc.) is rather unattractive. Almost all software I use allows me to use it at least on a PC and a laptop. I know you have a 30% educational, gov. and non-profit discount, but still...

I also miss the Relevance Sort.

peter schleifer Old comments are really instructive in this case, and there are just 11 of them, so checking them out is not difficult.

I had a look into the website, and yes, the info that the license is per computer, not per user is official, can be found there.

Also, I checked for file formats there (in the past, I had the unpleasant experience that most of my (ok, more or less exotic) file formats were NOT integrated into the index.

Now, trying to check possible progress being made in the meanwhile, on that field, I discovered that the list of "150 file formats" has been built up in a quite strange way:

- Lots of file formats are listed under the heading "CD will index their metadata" but in fact, the term "metadata" there seems to have been (wrongly) used as a synonym for "content" (since "metadata" clearly designs something very different from "content", or then, where's the list of file formats whose content is indexed?)

- Lots of file formats (hence the "big" total of 150 claimed there) are listed under the heading "CD will index their file names". Now this is weird indeed: Why have a special list for just file names? Should it not be possible to index ANY given file name, of ANY file on your pc, independently of the specific (and, by CD, unreadable) file format, given the fact that even numerous free file search tools index/find ANY file name, or parts of them, in an ntfs or even fat file system - where's the difficulty here that motivates CD to specifically list those file formats of which (only???) it is able to index the names (alone)?

Frankly speaking, I would prefer to buy sw with developers who are more straighhtforward than the above remarks seem to indicate (and let alone version-3 users' experience with version 4). This being said, (professionally-executed) relevance sort should indeed be a very good point FOR this tool, whenever this can/will be delivered.

Eugene Saltz I have used version 3 and it worked with Microsoft Outlook 2013 (Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit). But when tried the trial of version 4, it did not, and I had to revert back to version 3. Has this been resolved, and it not, when?

Cem Erdogdu I am currently testing the trial.
System: Win XP SP3, Firefox 25.0.1.
I had problems to start the programming. As I set up things in the wizzard at the beginning I assume that it started indexing.
The thing is that the programm didnt react. I had to shut it down twice.
Then I started with indexing only a few folders, first of all my Thunderbird folders.

At the moment I have this problem:
Firefox browser doesnt react about once in a minute. Task manager
shows that it crashed.
Since I changed two other things on my pc today, I wa not sure if this was
related to Copernic.
I then deactivated the addon in Firefox and Firefox is running now.
Are there any known issues with the addon in Firefox?

Additionally I have seen this.
Though I closed Copernic completely I could still see a related process
in the task manager.
But this occured only once.

The important question is about the Firefox addon.

B Josephs I'm desperately looking for a replacement for Outlook email search which was always quite adequate until Windows 8 (Outlook 2013). I tried some other paid options, but none so far have worked well with Outlook and my exchange online .ost file. Does anyone have experience with CDS and outlook 2013/windows 8?
I'm trying the trial right now. I'll see how long the indexing takes. I have it running at performance speed and my i7-3770 isn't having any issues.
I notice that it's indexing all the calendar events, including holidays. This seems like a waste. I would like to index my appointments, but I imagine there could be a list of holidays it knows to exclude.

My emails from Thunderbird are indexed now, but most of them show the current date instead of the date I sent/received them. So I cant filter by date.

Copernic @peter schleifer. All the file types found on this page, the content will be indexed and supported. It is possible to add other file types but only the file name will be indexed.

Eugene Saltz Yes. In version 3, the Outlook 2013 pst files are located (displayed: Tools - Options - Emails & Organizer) and indexed. My pst files are in a subdirectory called "C:\OutLook Files". Under version 4, they do not show up and apparently are not indexed..

Copernic @Eugene Saltz. In both version, PST files that are not open in Outlook won't be indexed. If you do not see them in Tools - Options - Emails & Organizer, then it means that you haven't open them in Outlook

Farhang I was the one who asked in the "old comments" about Relevance Sort and was told that 2014 was the year it will happen. I bought the software because of that response. Now we're told 2015. Make of that what you want but I don't appreciate it.

This is the single most important "category" of software for me and some thoughts for those wondering whether to buy this one.

I can't speak to casual users. I suspect it's a decent option. But DocFetcher is free, indexes better, has sorting, and is even portable.

If you are a "power user" this software is simply not for you. As a college professor with about 80 gb of pdfs alone on my computer, not counting word documents etc, this type of software is crucial for my research. I have Copernic on my computer (mostly to see what the next "update" brings) but I practically never use it or X1.

It is a resource hog, obviously not relevance sort, and its indexing is actually not the best but certainly not the worst.

I just use DocFetcher.

That said, if you are a power user and this is for your job, I hope you can afford it and buy it to support its development and generally this category.

@Copernic Sales: I strongly urge you to consider the needs of power users and not keep updating the bells and whistles. I would be happy to discuss anything with the dev team about my use as I know that I am not an outlier. You could "own" this market if you adjust to the needs that no one is meeting

Retired Engineer When duplicate text appears in multiple files, does Copernic group these together, and align the duplicate phrases together with a few lines of text before and after them? This, I've found, is the fastest way to find the document you *want* by searching for a key phrase contained in *many* documents.

Faisal Humayun Caveat Emptor: Please review old comments before deciding to commit to this lame duck v 4 which, I ultimately uninstalled, as all the proper dev work appears to be targeted for v 5 ( we shall see ), and nowhere near as versatile and stable as v 3.

Consider looking into VoidTools, Search Everything (free) for lightning quick file / directory type results, as well as BDJ user recommended DocFetcher (free) for search for content-in-files.

Copernic @Jaap Aap. For upgrade to v5, it mentions that the "Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free up to the next major version and minor versions thereafter." Therefore, all updates until version 5 will be free. As for the sorting by relevance, it is planned to be in version 5.

Jaap Aap Thanks - but if the next major version is v5, the "minor versions thereafter" are v5.01, v5.02 etc. aren't they? If upgrades to v5.x are not free, the statements in the fine print are misleading, as it explicitly states that upgrades to minor versions after v5 are free.

Copernic @Jaap Aap. I understand that it can be misleading but this is Bits Du Jour wording. Our licensing works on a per computer basis and it includes all updates to the next major version and basic technical support. Upgrades are never included unless the user buys Software Assurance and it is valid when we release a major version. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Copernic @Ronald Jurman. The data is kept inside the index if the drive go off-line. However, if you plug-in another USB drive and it takes the previous drive letter that is now off-line, you will loose the data inside the index. If the drive has always the same letter when connected, the data will be kept.

HarBri I have just tried to buy Copernic Desktop Search, but for the 2nd time in 2 weeks, I am being charged VAT despite being a UK VAT registered business, and adding my business name and VAT ID to the order form.

To make matters worse, the order form actually charges VAT TWICE. That's right - TWICE.

The UK price is shown as £18.09 ex VAT, £21.71 incl VAT at the top of the order section.

At the bottom, the sub-total is shown as £21.71 + £4.35 VAT, making £26.06 in total.

That's a total VAT charge of over 44% on the base price.

UK VAT is only 20% and as a VAT Registered business I shouldn't even be paying that.

How can Digital River justify charging VAT when it isn't due, let alone charging more than TWICE the amount due.

Tell Copernic thanks but no thanks. It isn't worth it.

disenchanted I have been researching which software to purchase as my next Desktop Search utility.
I have several other Copernic software products (tracker, summarizer, and the old web search) but I do not yet have your Desktop Search.

Questions:
1. Do you happen to have a features comparison chart that shows Copernic and other desktop search products?

2. I currently use DTSearch but the very first time you go to "index" any files, folders or your whole hard drive, DTSearch takes several hours to a full day.
However, once indexed, lookup results are instantaneous.
- The Downside is that DTSearch cost like $200

Do you have any speed benchmarks as to how long it takes to index one's hard drive the first time Copernic is used? [Example: 50Mb/second, 100Mb/sec]?

3. Can an end user setup Copernic's indexing manually?
So that any/all Indexing occurs only in the very early AM, like at 01:00, when the computer is not in use?
Or does Copernic run it's Indexing all the time, in the background?

1. No, we do not have such a chart.
2. Its not standard for every file type. The initial indexing depends on the amount of files, the file type and the file size. With version 5, we improved the indexing engine and it is up to 10x faster as in version 4.
3. It is possible to schedule the daily indexing tasks at any time of the day. It is also possible to change the indexing schedule interval for each category.

Pat Weber I have been using Version 4 for quite some time. I'm hesitant to upgrade because V4 consistently crashes after one search. When I'm having to look for several items, this is painful.

Is V5 more stable?

-- note - I just launched V4 and set it to update the index. Crashed after 10 seconds.

singularity I have been using version 5 for a month now. So far it is much better and stable than version 4. Running on Windows 10. No more crashes. Searches faster too.
Though I have to mention one con is the UI. There is no much upgrade in that part. Still not optimized for high DPI screens. Bit heavy too. Embedded within windows' native windows.. the UI is mostly the same with old style scroll bars and non responsive columns. For a productivity and system tool where "beauty" is not a real factor.. you must go for more "native" light weight UI and UX. When I installed I actually felt like its a minor version of v4 and not a major version 5. Looked like you hurried to market a major version and upgrades.

But again I am happy that finally copernic is way more stable and funtional.

Q2: I use Outlook, emClient and web based email for my various accounts. What can it index (and what can't it index)?

Years ago, I used a program like this to save me lots of time and effort. Not yet convinced this kind of ease can be repeated, but I hope so.

Copernic @Petr: Q1: Yes, it builds it's own index. Q2: Outlook is indexed but not emClient or any web-based clients.

Chris User I like this program a lot. I use it for documents and emails so I can't say anything about its use for music, video or pictures. I found Copernic when Google shut down Google Desktop Search a few years back.

I paid full price for V3, V4, and V5. The stability of the program in V5 is leaps and bounds better than it was in V4. I don't go a day without using it.

I use this program daily in my accounting firm. I'll throw out a couple of ways I use it:
- Email searches are way quicker in Copernic than in Outlook
- Copernic is vital to my role as a VBA developer. Over the years I've collected numerous code repositories in text files, pdf (>35 GB), bookmarked a heck of a lot of other resources; well Copernic indexed them all.
- example? say I forgot how to run an SQL command in VBA I'll search, "As ADODB.Connection" and Copernic will find all those instances in the various PDFs and code repositories (.vb, .bas, .txt files).
- Copernic's index used to be on the C:\ drive, but the settings allowed me to move the index to an SSD.
- to give you an idea of speed: I ran the exact search above ("As ADODB.Connection"), and Copernic returned 113 documents to me in a little over 3 seconds. The preview pane is essential. It takes me directly to result in the document so I can get enough context to figure out whether to open the file or skip it and look for a better match.

I'm not disappointed at all that I paid retail for this. With the release of every major version, the program did get better so props to them. It also gets updates regularly, so I know the developers are still at it. - just my two cents.

Dierk Have found CDS very useful - and, particularly, v5 was enough of an improvement over v4 that we sprang for TWO Licenses (admittedly during a sale...).

However, CDS still struggles with Thunderbird (E-mails), with odd Preview formatting, and often returning incomplete results. To be fair, Thunderbird's OWN Search function sometimes seems rather hit-or-miss - to the extent that it can be a crap shoot whether CDS, Thunderbird or NEITHER will come up with a particular result.

But have yet to find a Better Overall program for finding Content within common desktop files (MS Office / Open Office / PDF), and that includes several runs with earlier versions of X1 - which always seemed like it should have blown CDS out of the water...

So, short of putting EVERYTHING inside a Knowledge Database - such as RightNote Professional (a GREAT program, btw) - we'll be sticking with CDS. (Even though we are getting concerned about the future of Thunderbird - and really wish CDS would broaden support for other E-mail applications!)

Fine Print says "Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free up to the next major version and minor versions thereafter. For versions after that, upgrades will require additional payment, which will not be discounted.".

Does this mean I get upgrade to major version 6 and all minor versions released until version 7 is released.

Even after the BDJ promotion is over, if I purchase using the website link, do I still get the upgrade to next major version for free.

Technical Query
Can I include external drives during the time index is built to include external drive content in index. If the external drives are not connected to PC later on, can I still search from within its contents which are already indexed without connecting the external drive and connect the drive only if I need to open the actual file stored on it based on the search results.

Bjondc Does this index/search Windows Live Mail Storage Folders or just the mailboxes under each account.
If it won't search Storage it isn't much use for email searching AFAIC -- even WLM's own 'find message' can do that.
I'm running the trial version; am I missing a setting? is it only available in paid version?

Colin McAllister The Copernic FAQS state that "Data are indexed for PDF files"

What data is indexed? Is it
a) only file name and type, or
b) all the text included in the file, as well as any keywords, etc?
There's a big difference between (a) and (b).

Also, I was a premium user several years ago, but I gave up because the program used up too many resources on my PC. How "light" is Copernic search in 2016? Thanks.

I have a few pre-sales questions please:
Q1: Does Copernic build it's own index? Or, does it use a pre-existing index that's built by Windows? If you build your own index, how do I control the size?

Q2: To include NETWORK drives in the search, is an index used or does Copernic perform the search on-the-fly without an index? Same question for external USB drives?

Q3: How does Copernic differ from X1? I'm not sure which I'll buy or what the differences are?

First issue:
I got a message from your site saying my first PayPal purchase was cancelled. So I placed another order. It turned out there are 2 orders and PayPal sends the same amount twice. My I have a refund of $29.97?

Dierk Copernic builds its own index. Within the program Options you can chose a Location for the Index (believe default is under User account; move mine to another drive), AND you can set a Maximum File Size for the Index.
Note that setting too SMALL of an Index File Size could result in files NOT being included in the Index, which would hinder performance.
Instead, you could Restrict either the File Types and / or Locations that you want Indexed.

This internal index also applies to connected external drives.

It has been a number of years since I have used X1. From memory, it will Index & Search a greater number of file types than Copernic, and probably offers greater search & preview capabilities. However, it is also more expensive.

FWIW, the current version of Copernic performs quite well, and although it presents a "simple" interface, a journey through their Help document is well worth the time invested. This is a Daily Use program, among a handful of "Essentials," & have it licensed on 2 machines.

singularity When I read that there has been an upgrade in the user interface.. I expected too much. The UI doesn't change much since version 4 and looks dated and not native in Windows 10. And I think the UI makes it heavy to run for a productivity system app. And doesn't look very good on high DPI. Please focus on a lightweight simple native UI.

But otherwise a really good desktop search alternative.

JimR Very Cool ....Reserved the 6 and decided to get 2nd license .. My Macgyver for sloppy record keeping ..There's not really much variation in my searches ..
Thinking of stripping down the file type extensions.. I did hear that some tweaks are out there but I guess thats for some other time..Works Great ..Time Saver !

William W. Geertsema I take issue with the phrasing of the upgrade policy in The Fine Print.

My present version of Copernic was 5.2.1, updated from my original BitsDuJour purchase (February 26, 2016) of version 5.0. The Fine Print of that offer stated: Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free up to the next major version and minor versions thereafter. Because the phrase "and minor versions thereafter" implies that the words "up to the next major version" actually mean "up to and including the next major version" I assumed I could download and install version 6.0 from the Copernic site and register it with my 5.0 registration code.

That, however, proved to be impossible; attempting to register with that code, I got the message "Your Copernic Desktop Search serial number is invalid". And the program reverted to the Lite version, with its (very low) limit of 75,000 files

. Whereas I can understand Copernic's (rather normal) upgrading policy, I do not understand why its ambiguous presentation, which Copernic uses again in today's offer, has not been clarified. In effect, the presentation is deceptive (although I do not believe that was intended), and causes users to waste their time until they find out by trial and error.

Copernic @William W. Geertsema. It mentions up to the next major which means that you need to pay for the upgrade to version 6. Therefore, your code for version 5 will not work with version 6. Our upgrade policy reflects the same policy here.

I believe you misunderstood me. I have no problem with your upgrade policy, but merely pointed out that you have not stated it clearly in "The Fine Print".

Instead of writing
"Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free up to the next major version and minor versions thereafter""
you could write something like this:
"Upgrades to future versions will be free for all minor versions of the present major version".

That would remove the ambiguity!
And it would spare other users loss of time and effort.

Spent/spends alot money on development and support when this almost went bye bye.. now how's free (limited) going to keep it forward ?.. And how can anyone read and assume that they get it at a discount plus a Free $49 version a year later ?

does copernic desktop search also foler names (like the freeware everytihing),
so that looing for "test" does not only recognize files named "test" but also folders named "test".
If copernic search still is not capable of this (would be the dealbreaker) can this feature be exspected in the near future?

Copernic @H. H. Copernic will recognize the folder name but it will not put the folder on its own in the search results. If you search for a folder name, it will give out all the results inside that folder and it will highlight the folder name in the Folder column.

Noel Rodrigue I'm getting a message that the connection is not secure! Not the first time I shop here, but the first one that I get the note "www.bitsdujour.com uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate expired on October 29, 2017, 7:59 PM. The current time is November 2, 2017, 7:36 PM. Error code: SEC_ERROR_EXPIRED_CERTIFICATE".

Can you update before the end of sale time or could extend that to be able to allow shoppers to not get the message?
