What are people saying about Database Oasis - Basic Edition

Peter pereh Can I establish links between databases? For example: I browse a DB called 'My books', can I link via the field 'Author' to the entry in a db called 'Biography'?

Kathy Fielder The current version of Database Oasis does not let you create links between databases. That functionality will be available in the next release of Database Oasis - Professional Edition.

Tom Dunn Does this system require my website to have anything special. PHP version? SQL Server, AJAX? ect...

My Web server is pretty basic and may not be adequate. Let me know please.

Kathy Fielder Database Oasis Basic Edition is our single user version that runs on the local PC. It does not run on a website. You are, however, able to export your data to HTML and post it to any website as static reports, which does not require anything special on your web server.

Glen Coulthard Will you be offering a similar discount on the Professional edition in the future? The Basic edition is too "basic" for my needs.

Jun 16 2009 at 8:49am Copy Link

Kathy Fielder We don't plan to offer the discount on Professional Edition, however, we do offer an upgrade from Basic to Professional for $60. If you purchase Basic Edition at the discount, then upgrade to Professional Edition, it will only cost for $87.99 total vs. the usual $149.99.

Phil H When do you expect to introduce the next release of Prof. Ed?

Also, is there a table somewhere that explains the differences between the basic and Prof. editions?

Thank you.

Phil H One more question... I'm like some of your customers who have tried more advanced database programs, only to give up. I understand the advantages vs. Excel, but the learning curve is steep.

So, my question is - if I adopt Database Oasis, what are the limitations compared to other database programs? How much of the functionality in advanced programs is contained in Database Oasis? I wouldn't want to adopt, only to discover that I've "outgrown" in 6-12 months.

Thank you.

Kathy Fielder I'll answer both postings from Phil here:

We've just started development on the new Professional Edition, so it is several months to a year out.

The differences between Basic Edition and Professional Edition can be found here: http://www.databaseoasis....ional.html

In software development, there's a trade-off between functionality and complexity. As you mentioned, there are a number of really good advanced database programs out there, but the learning curve is steep. Database Oasis is designed to be a more user-friendly alternative. As such, it doesn't have a lot of advanced programming options. It's hard to list the differences, but if you have some specific requirements, we'd be happy to let you know whether or not Database Oasis is the right choice for you.

Don Goddard This program definitely has my interest! This looks like a great opportunity to test out this program. I am very pleased to see that there is an upgrade path from the basic edition to the professional edition.

Kathy Fielder Hello Alan,
We are not planning to offer a specific discount for Professional Edition, but the upgrade from Basic to Pro is $50, so by purchasing Basic Edition at the discount, you get Professional for $71 instead of $119.99.

Keith A From your offering last year it sounds like a new version might be coming out soon. So.............

When will the next version be released.

Are upgrades to new versions free?
If not, how much are they for both the Basic and Pro versions?

Thanks

Alan @Kathy,

Peter pereh When it was offered here the last time, I asked: "Can I establish links between databases? For example: I browse a DB called 'My books', can I link via the field 'Author' to the entry in a db called 'Biography'?"
The answer was, that this will be available in the next Pro version. Is this version already available?

Apr 7 2010 at 6:05am Copy Link

Kathy Fielder The upgrade with the ability to link databases is not yet available. We were targeting a June release, but there was some additional functionality that customers have requested that we're planning to include, so that is going to push the release out a few months.

Kathy Fielder Hello Vista x64 Guy,
Yes, it does work in Windows Vista and Windows 7 on a 64 bit computer. (In fact, I use Vista x64.)

The Wiz What format do you store your data in? If I want to export a DB later to a more advanced, multi-table form, like MySQL or Alpha 5, how difficult is this to do?

Apr 13 2010 at 5:58pm Copy Link

Nick Kobe Is the license per computer or per user? I have a desktop and SEVERAL laptops and tablets. Also, is the "Pro" version also discounted? Thanks! Nick

Jim McGowan I was going to post a comment about not offering the Pro version at a discount but if what Kathy says is true then purchasing the Basic version at this price plus the $50 upgrade cost makes that way less expensive than if the Pro version were offered at the same 70% discount.

I wouldn't use the Basic version because you cannot create reports in it; custom report writing is only available in the Pro version. That seem really odd to me as it appears to presume that only business users would want to create reports, not personal users.

Thank you.

Jim

Kathy Fielder Hello All,
I'll answer all of the comments so far at once:

The Wiz - We store the data in VDB3 format (VistaDB). If necessary, you can export your data to a delimited file format such as CSV to import it into another application.

Nick Kobe - The Basic Edition license is per computer. Professional is not directly discounted, but the upgrade from Basic to Pro is $50, so by purchasing the discounted Basic and upgrading, you get Pro for $71 instead of $119.

Jim - There's always a trade-off between functionality and complexity in software. The original idea behind Database Oasis was to have something so simple, literally anyone who can use a mouse can use it. To that end, we intentionally left out some functionality that's a little more complicated to use. People started asking for some of that functionality, so we created Professional Edition. We do recognize the need to have some additional reporting in Basic Edition, so we're working on that now.

Steven White Is it possible to run this software in "portable" mode from a memory stick?

Apr 14 2010 at 3:39am Copy Link

Kathy Fielder Hello Steven,
Yes you can run from an external drive, as long as the path doesn't change. (i.e., if you first locate the data when it's on the E:\ drive, it always has to be E:\ for Database Oasis to find it. You would just need to move it to the drive, then tell Database Oasis where it is. We have an article in our learning center at http://www.databaseoasis....enter.html with details on how to move a data file.
