Yes, even if you have Adobe Acrobat you will still find Debenu PDF Maximus very useful for repetitive tasks, batch processing many documents and automating workflows with watched folders.

Any questions, let us know!

Debenu HI Timothy,

Debenu PDF Maximus does not include a PDF printer driver.

It does let you convert images to PDF, but it only supports the conversion of images to PDF.

If you want convert all document types to PDF - you can use Benubird PDF which is our free personal document management system. You can also manage and archive the output from Maximus too, it's great.

http://www.debenu.com/pro...-benubird/

Plus this personal version is free always.

Cheers,
- Karl.

Debenu Hi VLM,

Nothing directly.

Debenu PDF Tools adds a lots of pdf functionality to Windows Explorer's right-click menu (content-menu).

It allow you to do a lot of stuff to a single or small group of PDF files as you see fit.

Free version here -
http://www.debenu.com/pro...pdf-tools/

More features in the Pro version -
http://www.debenu.com/pro...tools-pro/

... but as for inserting and editing text ... no, you can't do that. You can stamp with Maximus - however, I presume you are looking to edit errors or make change to content.

Mario Balzic Spybot-Search and Destroy just raised a RED FLAG about malicious software, specifically "SmitFraud-C" that it found in this software package! I installed the package and was at the point of the README file and running the software and was about to enter the key to register, when Spybot called a halt and wants to delete the program because of it finding "SmitFraud-C" in the executable. I downloaded the software via the link when I entered my email information, so I am reasonably sure it did not get infected from an alternate source. Or maybe the Bits link is infected?

I found this about SmitFraud-C at:

http://www.ehow.com/how_6...aud-c.html

quoteSmitfraud C is a malicious program that is installed by adware. Once it has been installed, it works with rogue anti-spyware programs such as Spyware Guard 2009, XpyBurner, AntiVirus 1, which display frequent false pop-up notifications of threats on your computer to trick you into purchasing the full software versions./quote

What gives?

Sorry, I can't take the chance that YOU, the vendor of this software, have infected MY computer with ADWARE,

Thanks, but NO THANKS!

Mario Balzic Karl-

Maybe you can guarantee your software, but the install package as well? It was the downloaded installation EXE which triggered the alert as it passed the "finish" screen to run the program and read the READ ME file, which I did. I had entered the email registration information and the alert popped up.

Here are the related entries from the Spybot log file:

07/09/2012 08:59:54 Allowed (based on user decision) value "Debenu PDF Maximus Watched Folder Agent" (new data: "C:\Program Files\Debenu\PDF Maximus\MaximusWatchedFolders.exe") added in System Startup global entry!

07/09/2012 08:59:55 Encountered and terminated Smitfraud-C. in C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\Downloads\bits_debenu_pdf_maximus_en.exe!

Note, I renamed the downloaded program by adding "bits_" to get this for the downloaded install program:

bits_debenu_pdf_maximus_en.exe

Also note, Spybot was triggered immediately after the install package added the program as a global startup entry.

I elected to let Spybot kill the program rather than continue, and then ran your uninstall routine. I think it might have been the SETUP package that you used that may be what triggered Spybot, not your software itself. AVG Free found nothing when I scanned the installed program files. But that may mean nothing. This malware can "hide" from AVG and Spybot as well.

I just downloaded a new copy from the download link in the email. A CRC check indicates the original I downloaded is the same.

I just tried to replicate the problem to see if Spybot would repeat the alert, and it failed to trigger Spybot. Evidently, your uninstall program did not completely remove things as it said it did. When I installed it again, it carried over the registration information from the first time I installed it. Evidently, you stored the registration information in the registry and you did not remove things as your uninstall claimed, hence the 2nd install indicated it was registered without me entering anything.

It bothers me that I can not replicate the original trigger that Spybot caught. That tells me that I am either infected and the malware has successfully hidden itself from my anti-virus packages, or it was a false alarm from Spybot. If it was a false alarm, it would be the FIRST. I'll continue my research into the original alert from Spybot. My preliminary research so far says this particular malware is one of the most difficult to detect and remove.

I found information on this particular malware here:

http://www.ask.com/questi...mitfraud-C

My machine may have been infected from some other source, but Spybot DID name your executable that I ran to do the original installation. Sooner or later I WILL get to the bottom of this...

If I run into any other difficulties, I'll keep you posted...

Debenu Hi Mario,

Yes, we also run both Microsoft Security Essentials and MacKeeper AntiVirus across all of our machines which access the same files.

The files are presently being scanned using SpyBot - but it's quite time consuming - so I can't get you an exact answer.

If you find anything further we'd certainly appreciate knowing as security is certainly a top priority when distributing files to our customers.

Thanks for keeping us in the loop.

Sadly that didn't work, and instead I got the message "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem." Watcher1924 Big problem! Every time, after the whole procedure and after the program has informed me that it was successful, I go to the output folder and I find nothing, like no action has taken place!!! I tried a couple of different tasks, output folders and source PDF files but nothing changed. I have read most of the comments here and - strangely - nothing like this is mentioned!
Another thing: is there a web page where we can request new or improved features? As it is now, this program cannot be a complete solution for me and I will have to use at least one other program along with it because if you try to rotate scanned pages which are not straight they will end up not straight again; it needs to give the users more accuracy in this field.

Debenu Hi Consuella,

I believe this is related to the Watched Folder Agent that runs in order to allow Maximus to process files in folders automatically.

The watched folders are designed to run silently in the back of the main Maximus application.

So - the AutorunCreation issue is because is starts at runtime - and the CodeInjection is because it starts at the end of installation.

Ellery Davies I have just installed PDF Maximus. The tray icon and main screens have no option to avoid having the program run with every boot up. Is it possible that you released an application that cannot be shut down, short of uninstalling it?!

Debenu Hi Ellery,

Thanks for getting in touch.

You've certainly raised a good point about an area of Maximus that we need to improve which is to make the areas of the watched folder agent and application startup clear for the user.

The watched folder agent is designed to run at all times and is the mini-app that is responsible for putting an icon in the tray. When active i.e. not paused, it checks for files in folders and runs your assigned "action lists" and puts the resulting output files. where you specify.

The main Maximus application only runs when you ask it to - like any normal application - you just have the option of doing this using a menu-item in the tray. It does not run when you start your machine.

Now - as for stopping the tray icon - well, if you right click the tray icon - you can select:

* Exit - to close the watched folder agent completely
* Open Watched Folder Agent, then selecting the "Pause all" button on the Watched Folder Agent dialog. This prevents any (meaningful) activity.

If you start the main application - you will notice a number of tabs - the second tab is titled "Watched Folders", a button down the bottom right titled, "Pause Watched Folder Agent" will also have the same effect".

In both cases -- the pause functionality is 'remembered' when you restart your machine. Unfortunately - what we don't have is an option to permanently turn off the tray icon - definitely an oversight, as in, make sure that the watched folder agent is never started when you start your machine.

That is a good point and we take that on-board. We have added that to our development list for a quick update.

Thanks for your time and we welcome any further feedback. We are always looking to improve our products.

Cheers,

Karl

Debenu Hi all,

We have now released a minor update - version 1.1.0.29 - you can download this from:

http://www.debenu.com/pro...s/updates/

The same serial number is usable with this version.

Based on customer feedback (thank you!) we’ve decided to make a few changes:

1, The Watched Folder Agent will no longer launch after the installation completes.
2. The Watched Folder Agent will launch when you click on the “Start Watched Folder Agent” button on the “Watched Folders” tab in Maximus.
3. An option has been added to the Watched Folder Agent dialog called “Load on startup” which enables the user to choose if the Watched Folder Agent should be launched and added to the system tray on every Windows reboot.

Aside from avoiding false positives with some malware blockers - we simply wanted to provide a simple and easy to use method of turning on and off the watched folder agent.

Please keep sending through feedback...

Mario Balzic Hi Karl:

Thanks for the update. Quick work...

Update on my Spybot problem: I've spent the majority of a full day trying to figure out what happened and more important, WHY. I downloaded a couple of other antivirus programs and have run now a total of 6 different antivirus packages, and I found nothing. What I DID find were a couple of infected files in my backup archives, but these were known about before and harmlessly held in "quarantine" by AVG.

All I have is the report from Spybot in the log file (previously posted above) which named the executable I was running to install the program. Instead of immediately letting Spybot kill the problem, I should have stopped and done research right then. So, all I can say is that it must have been something which triggered Spybot, and I have no idea exactly what it was. I think you can understand that an alert from Spybot after going for over a year since I had a previous alert, was a bit startling, and to have your install executable named as the cause with a specific virus name, well, you can see I had cause to jump to the conclusion I did. Still, I apologize for crying wolf... I just wish I could have found something concrete as the reason. It bothers me that I found nothing out of place, nothing in error, nothing wrong anywhere, except for the report in the log file that Spybot killed the problem.

Since the Spybot alert came right after your program added itself to the registry RUN section, I'm now thinking Spybot was fooled by this singular act and named a virus which added itself in the same manner, and the act was equivalent to the virus signature. That explains why I found no virus as such. I'm thinking I could not replicate the problem because your uninstall routine did not remove the offending registry entry that triggered the 1st alert, so since it was already IN the registry, the 2nd time install did not write to the registry and hence Spybot was not triggered. The first time it was triggered by the registry change, but the 2nd time the change was not made because it was already there, left over from the 1st installation not being fully uninstalled. Remember, I discovered the incomplete uninstall when I installed a 2nd time and noticed the registration information had carried over. Now, I'm wondering what else was left behind. Anyway, you say this update now offers an option to run on startup instead of just doing it silently during the installation. Which I think was the initial problem I had with a virus alert. It really WAS a false alarm after all, but from an understandable mistake on Spybot's part. If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck... and all that... I think you get my drift. My final conclusion is the behavior of your install program writing to the registry in the manner it did, was what fooled Spybot into thinking there was a virus based on the specific type of behavior. Note the alert was raised immediately after your program added itself to the registry. I finally noticed the TIME on the entries from Spybot being 1 second apart. I should have connected the entries as cause and effect and I think I would have, had Spybot not named a specific virus by name...

Bottom line: it was not the "SmitFraud-C" virus reported by Spybot after all, but "virus like behavior" exhibited by your install routine which mimicked SmitFraud-C closely enough which triggered Spybot which then erred on the side of caution. Case closed.

Thank you for making this program available to all of us out here in neverneverland. And thanks for the update with the option to NOT run the watchdog on startup. I apologize for all the fuss and bother I caused...

Thanks again,

Debenu Hi Mario,

Really appreciate the amount of research you've put into this - that's a very comprehensive follow up - what a day that must have been!

We traced through with Spybot and Mamutu ourselves now since and we're endeavoring to provide the minimal number of warnings and alerts.

It appears we'll never be able to get them to zero when they are behavioral based - but we can certainly make it pretty clear that it's vey highly unlikely when you combine w/ reputable/known source + digitally signed, etc...

We really have been able to work out how we can improve our install/install routines with your feedback - and also the operation of Maximus itself - such as by way of making the Watched Folder Agent an entirely optional component (thanks Ellery).

We've started to get some interesting feedback on features too.

Don't be shy to send them through guys!

or

p.s. I'll lodge a note with the developers re: uninstall to see nothing is left behind.

Mario Balzic Hi Karl:

It is my obsessive compulsive disorder that relentlessly drives me to solve puzzles...

Seriously, I spent 21 years in nuclear power in the Navy, and one thing Admiral Rickover (the guy who WAS the nuclear program) pounded into every one of us in the fleet was to KNOW WHY things happen the way they do, so we could accurately diagnose and solve ANY problem with the power plant so it would not kill us all through ignorance. Which is why the Navy has not had a problem like 3 Mile Island or Chernobyl or any other serious accident for that matter. Then, I changed careers and spent 25 more years as a programmer and systems analyst, until I recently retired from the workforce. My first computer was built from a kit from an article in Popular Electronics in 1976. How could I NOT do my homework on this? It was a puzzle. I had no reason WHY it happened. The rest is history. Anyway, it was my pleasure to work the problem.

Mario Balzic Hi to William Tatters:

Thank YOU for the kind words... Believe me when I say, it was MY pleasure to do what I did regarding my research; my OCD thing and all regarding puzzles and unknowns... I only wish more people had done the same for ME when they found a bug in one of MY programs... I am simply returning a favor that a FEW people did with MY programs and designs when _I_ had a bug! I am disappointed in that I could NOT find anything concrete to point a finger at! All I have are deductions based on behavior, and that might have been enough for Sherlock Holmes, but is not satisfying to ME... I would do the same for anyone... as the scorpion said to the frog, "It is my nature..."

As I said, it BOTHERS me when I do not know WHY things happen as they do. I am a firm believer in GIGO, garbage in, garbage out, and there is always a reason WHY there is garbage out without corresponding garbage IN to account for it... I programed computers for a large part of my life, and I SHOULD know why they do what they do! There is NO excuse for NOT knowing why a program fails as ALL DO from time to time...

And THEN... there IS the thrill of the chase... notwithstanding my minor affliction with OCD and puzzles...

My best to you and all of you other people reading this out there in neverneverland... Do NOT use my red flag from a virus to dissuade you from using THIS program. My alert was in fact, a false alarm...

"oops!"

William Tattors MB, Certainly welcome...I would say that I am very similar to you. I like to understand how things work. I started punching cards running fortran. My anticipation is the merging of computers with autos. The "computer needs replacing" for auto repair consumers has been the greatest artful rip off in history of man; and with the number of sensors skyrocketing, game on! The Maximus developer is pretty cutting edge, as a Nitro early user.. Loved the piercing of the adobe veil on the pdfs. This giveaway was a brilliant move and the returns will be many times over. The technology cloud front is moving so fast,; thus, presenting golden opportunities for innovators as Debenu who recognize the value of feedback from users and not consultants. The ability to watch for contents on a cloud folder and pull it down and put local is a evolutionary step, I think. See ya on the upgrade offer in awhile...

Debenu Hi all,

I thought I'd make this clear as a few people have asked now - also privately.

You are entitled to all minor updates of version 1.x such as 1.1, 1.2, etc, just as you would be if you purchased a full license.

When we release 2.X then you will need to pay for an upgrade as would any normal customer.

I hope this helps and thanks for your support.

Thomas Duntze Hello all,
could you please re-explain, how many installations are allowed.
During your last action you said, one PC and one laptop is ok, if not used at the same time.
How about a second partition on a PC.
I have a much needed take-everywhere-laptop AND a PC with a W7 partition for everyday work and a second partition with W8 for learning (bad words and curses) and getting to know the new operating system.
They can't be used at the same time, of course.
So: 1 PC with two OS, 1 laptop.
Is this covered?

Thomas V. Dahl A question about Registration Information ...

You write in the receipt-email that :

"Use this registration information to unlock
the software after installation.
You must install/register the software within 3 days,
and cannot do so afterwards."

Does this mean I have to install it now
within 3 days ?
Or does it mean that, when I install it
in example 1 month, then I have to register
within 3 days ?

The reason I use the example 1 month
is because I'm building a new computer
and have to wait 1 month for some of
the parts ... I'm writing from a computer
which is too old and I'll donate it away !

So do I have to install it on this old PC ?
And if YES : then how can I transfer the
software You so kindly have donated ?

Thanks anyway - Thomas

J. M. Neal Wanted the Debenu PDF Maximus offer. On the BitsduJour page for the Debenu offer, the Get It For Free link seemed to hang. I did a right-click and chose "Copy Link Location," opened a new tab, and pasted the URL into the address box.

I arrived at a page that said:

I use Firefox with an add-on called Request Policy, so I had made sure that I had give permission for all requests to other sites. The link still didn't work. I opened up the list of requests, and found the relevant URL in the list:
http://www.bitsdujour.com...df-maximus

I copied it and entered it into the address box, which took me to the survey. I answered the survey questions, and clicked to submit. The content of the address box began to stutter back and forth between the current URL, and the URL for the page acknowledging completion of the survey:

Debenu Hi Guys,

This is the same version (version 1.x) that was given away 6+ months ago, however, it has had a number of updates to it since then.

If you download it during the last promotion and have a license key then you can just download the latest version from the product updates page. The latest version is 1.2.0.7.

There has been a bunch of existing changes in the past few months:

* New PDF Preview feature
* Fully tested for use with Dropbox
* New Maximus PDF Scripting feature added
* Bug fixes and enhancements

If you have any scripting experience then the new scripting feature is going to be extremely useful to you as it gives users access to the full API from Debenu Quick PDF Library from within Debenu PDF Maximus.

It's well worth upgrading to the new version if you haven't already.

There were no facebook buttons to click on, and when I clicked on the link to fill out the survey, nothing happened. I did empty the cache on both computers, no difference. I assume that some program on both computers is causing the program. I do have malwarebytes installed on both computers. Could this maybe the problem? Thank you for your support.
