I appreciatte that this comes with 1 year of updates but will it work forever or is this subscription type software and has to be paid every year

Pete A You have 1 year of updates. After that you can use the current build forever. Let's say now is build 3.0 and after one year is build 3.2, so you can use build 3.2 unlimited, and you don't need to pay anything.
But of course if you want new build after that (build 3.3, 3.4 or 4, 5 ) you have to paid.
