What are people saying about DeltaWalker 2

Bruno Verschraegen Hi Deltawalker team.

What happened between yesterday and today? Yesterday I was reading old comments to avoid asking a question wo which a reply had already been given, when suddenyl the deal went offline (status said "Deal Expired") and today I see that the deal description has changed.

Yesterday's text mentioned XLS/DOC/PPT, which are pre 2007/2010 file formats, and I meant to ask if XLSX/DOCX/PPTX are covered too.

PS: What happened nopw to the old comments?

Bruno Verschraegen Tx. Eddie Tex. What about Office: does it cover 2007/2010 versions?
Jul 30 2012 at 7:27am Copy Link
0
Eddie Tex If I'm not mistaken, Office documents (as of 2007) are stored as XML files, so theoretically it should work though I believe you might be viewing the document in its XML format. If the developer doesn't respond soon, the best way to find out is to test it.
Jul 30 2012 at 8:19am Copy Link
0
Yolian Ignatov Eddie's right, 2007 onward Office docs are zipped XML. DeltaWalker however doesn't compare them as ZIP or XML files, although it offers special handling for both these formats; rather it compares them the same way it compares the older Office docs - it extracts the text and compares the documents as text.
DW 1.9.9 offers a uses a new version of the library it uses to extract the text from Office docs; since the 1.9.9 release, that library was updated yet again and the latest version offers even better extraction for Office docs, particularly Excel files. DW has been upgraded to it, we'll be releasing DW 1.9.9.2 ~ Aug 10 - it'll be a free upgrade.

Yolian Ignatov Hi Jon,

What is the browser where the promo code doesn't work? Would you make sure JavaScript is enabled on it?

As to what you should be looking for now - if you bought DW prior to August 17, 2011 and you'd like to use the imaging functionality in DW 1.9.9, or you simply want to buy the DW 2.0 upgrade at 50% off, today is the day; if not you are all set - DW 1.9.9 is a free upgrade, except for the image visualisation and comparison.

Thank you, I'm using IE9, which is all I have available at work and JavaScript is enabled. As I bought in March 2011, I would like the extras for $20!

Yolian Ignatov Strange indeed... IE 9 is one of the browsers we test with and it's working fine on this end... perhaps a Ctrl+F5 to force a full refresh?

The price of the upgrade will likely be $10 in your case: an upgrade to DW 2.0 for existing customers is 50% of current price; today's promo cuts this down by another 50%, so if you are simply upgrading a Standard Edition license, your cost should be $10.
Deltopia - Jul 31 2012 at 1:22am Copy Link
0
Jon Spain No, I have Oro, not Standard so I assume I should be paying $20. Well, I tried again with control-F5 and I still don't get the $20. Yes, I have double-checked that javascript is enabled! Will BdJ object to a private link being provided direct to jonessegmail.com?

Jul 31 2012 at 3:08am Copy Link

Yolian Ignatov Hi VLM,
DeltaWalker is not a duplicate finder; it can come close to one, but in a very roundabout way where it looks for duplicates in pairs of folder hierarchies. A duplicate finder is, of course, a lot more efficient at this.

Software Guy Been using deltawalker for some time now and find it invaluable. I also use Beyond Compare on another set of computers and find the two programs very similar functionally. I tend to favor deltawalker slightly, but both are very good. If you need this type of software, especially for comparing MS Office files, then take advantage of this good deal today. DeltaWalker is a real timesaver when multiple edits of a single file exist.

Bruno Verschraegen Tip to people for who the discount is not automatically applied. It may be as simple as removing an empty space at the end of the coupon code after you have copied and pasted that into the buying (pricing) page. That's what was about to happen to me; when I removed the empty space the discount was applied.

PS. Have not purchased yet because I saw on the pricing page the difference between personal and commercial prices - and now pondering what to do.

SoftCollector One of the better file comparison products on the market today. Useful to compare different versions of a file, check what changes have been implemented by a collaborator, etc.

DeltaWalker is being actively developed which makes it not only a good choice, but an investment, as some of its rivals seem to slowly turn into 'deadware'.

Yolian is very responsive and is a pleasure to communicate with.

Stefan Hauber Do I understand this right?

Buyers before August 17th, 2011 can purchase a DeltaWalker 2.0 license key (when DW arrives) at 50% and buyers after that date will get it free?
Aug 1 2012 at 7:09am Copy Link
0
Yolian Ignatov Faisal, if the issue you are seeing is still present, please make sure that the JRE installed **and active** on your machine matches the installed DeltaWalker package. I.e. if your JRE is 64-bit, DW also needs to be 64-bit. Please note that a 32-bit JRE can be installed on a 64-bit OS. The easiest way to see what JRE is installed and active is to type "java -version" on the command line, without the quotes. If the problem persists, please contact our support team.

Yolian Ignatov Stefan, your understanding is correct: if you've purchased a license prior to Aug17, 2011 you get a free DW 1.9.9.1 key to unlock its imaging functionality and you'll be entitled to a free upgrade to DW 2.0 when released later this year. If your license was purchased earlier, you can upgrade at 50% current cost. Today's promo cuts that cost by another 50%.

Richard Andersen I'm a bit confused about the upgrade price. I already own DW Oro Personal, and as I understand you, normal upgrade price (inclusing 2.0 license) is 50% of the current price, i.e. $37.98. With the BDJ discount you get an extra 50% discount, i.e. about $19. Is that correct?
Aug 1 2012 at 11:17am Copy Link

B Josephs @ Yolian - thanks for the deal. Let me get this straight - the difference between Standard and Oro, aside from being cross platform is the ability to compare 3 files/folders simultaneously? What about more than 3?

Yolian Ignatov Olivier, apologies for the delay in receiving your license key. Emails on the email server at our hosting company have started queuing up since ~midnight PST. 0
Yolian Ignatov Richard, your understanding and the example you give are both correct.
Deltopia - Aug 1 2012 at 2:24pm Copy Link
0
Yolian Ignatov B Josephs, these are the main differences, plus a couple others:
- DW Oro allows you to visualize XML files as structures, not only as text, useful when wanting to eliminate diffs due to formatting or attribute ordering
- Folder comparison alignment override, which is the ability to instruct a folder comparison to compare files with different names, incl. extensions, using a variation of regular expressions. Not the most common of features, but very powerful in certain scenarios.

There are no current plans for providing support for comparing/merging/syncing more than 3 files/folders at a time. Even the 3-way comparison has a somewhat specialised application rooted in the context of collaborative software development. There's more info about, incl. examples, in the DW online documentation.

Richard Andersen @Yolian

OK, thanks. Then I must have done something wrong for I paid $37.98 for the upgrade. I selected these options:

License: Personal
Edition: Oro
Upgrade to 1.9.9 image comparison & 2.0 (when available): yes

The BDJ code didn't have any effect though, so I thought it only applied to new licenses, not upgrades.

In any case there seem to be a bug in your cart - it doesn't always seem to update correctly. For example it is possible to buy a new Oro license for $39.95 (and for the half if you use the BDJ code) by checking the radiobuttons and the checkbox in a certain order. Can send you a screenvideo to document it if you like.

Yolian Ignatov Richard, when trying it from here selecting Personal, Oro, and Upgrade to 1.9.9/2.0, then entering DWPC-50-BDJ results in $18.99. In other words a video, or an outline, of the steps that lead to a miscalculation will be most helpful. In the meantime, I'll gladly refund the difference to your PayPal account. Thank you.

B Josephs @Yolian Thanks again - I just purchased the standard license. When I went to install, I noticed the prerequisite of JRE. I'm not too comfortable about that. Is there any workaround in the making?
Aug 1 2012 at 7:35pm Copy Link
0
Bruce B Josephs,
Looking at the app, I see a lot of the components are .jar files. And on their Download page is stated: "All platforms: DeltaWalker requires Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.6 or newer. "

So Java is necessary and required to use DeltaWalker. At least for now in current implementation.
Aug 1 2012 at 7:59pm Copy Link
0
B Josephs Bruce - yeah, I got that. I just didn't catch it until I purchased :( I haven't installed JAVA on any of my machines for quite some time, and was pondering if this app is worth the potential issues associated with Java. My question was if this requirement is a permanent fixture or maybe will will change (unlikely, I assume)
Aug 1 2012 at 8:06pm Copy Link
0
Yolian Ignatov Software Guy, the trimming of space in the beginning or end of the promo code has been added and that should no longer be a problem. We test with all A-grade browsers on all 3 supported platforms so I'm not sure what else we could do repro what you are seeing; suggestions are welcome.
Please drop our support a line, we'll help you take advantage of the promo price. Please excuse the inconvenience. Thanks!

Yolian Ignatov B Josephs, the pros and cons of java have been too debated to even scratch that topic, but if there's anything we could say that might calm your concerns, we'll be glad to (support(at)deltopia.com). I would only add that we made an informed choice to use java on the back end for portability reasons 7 years ago and that if we have to chose again the choice will be the same. I'd even say that we'd make that choice even if we didn't have to deal with portability. One more point, if I may: consider file IO, one of java's traditional weaknesses - at present DW has, according to our measurements, the fastest overall folder comparison on any platform. On OS X, it's about 70x faster (attribute-based comparison) than Araxis Merge, a Cocoa-native application.

Should you have regrets about your purchase, please let us know by the end of tomorrow, Thu (as this is a joint promo b/n BDJ and Deltopia).

B Josephs @Yolian
I agree that Java certainly has benefits. I've just been happy not to need it for anything until now and be able to avoid the potential issues. However, Deltawalker looks rather useful, so I was just wondering if I'm absolutely commited to JRE from now on. In the meantime, I guess I'll play with it and see if it wins me over.
Aug 1 2012 at 9:24pm Copy Link

Yolian Ignatov From the minimalist's point of view, which I believe I share, dealing with one more runtime is... dealing with one more thing, no question about it. Too bad the world of software cannot be a more united/standardised place. Apple has been pretty good with regards to Java so far; even in Lion/Mountain Lion where it needs to be installed, it's just a click away.
As to DW going forward - there's too much investment, and equally importantly, there's nothing else out there that would give us the ability to run on 3 platforms with native UI and relatively homogenised codebase to consider replacing Java.

J S yep the Discount code doesn't appear to work for me either the standard price is still $39.95.

Q1. I would also like to know as PayPal doesn't allow the buyer to enter a License name of their own choice (unlike Google Checkout which does allow different License name(s)): Will I be able to get the License name changed to suit my preferred license name after I have purchased the program?

Q2. If we purchase today during the BdJ promotion do I leave the "Upgrade to 1.9.9 image comparison & 2.0 (when available)" unchecked?

I just do not have enough time to get my head around the purchase options before the time expires, so I hope you will be able to help me afterwards if i make a mistake

Sam S Dear Yolian, Thank you very much for the reply, it works perfectly now.

In case other readers experience this problem on Windows 8 64 bit, please download the java 64 bit runtime from the oracle website and install it, since the regular java download automatically does a 32 bit install. Thanks again Yolian.

nylg Cannot access your website via any means because Avast Antivirus says that although it is a legitimate website, it is nevertheless contaminated by a virus that is using the site as a pace to hide and then contaminate people's machines.

Is there anything I can do to access you site as I would like to take a look at what your software does?

Yolian Ignatov Hi Glyn,

To say that this is inacceptable is an understatement; last night we completed the changes to our website that, according to 3rd party URL risk analyzers, could've been tripping avast yet it appears that it's still a problem for people out there. avast has been installed on several machines here, both Windows and Macs, and it never flagged any issues with www.deltopia.com. We are working with their tech support, we also opened an emergency ticket.
Another customer who wrote us earlier about the problem just contacted us to say that they uninstalled avast altogether as it started blocking other legit sites and apps.
So, not sure what we can advise further - we cannot repro the issue on our side, avast is not saying what exactly makes it unhappy, the potential issue identified by URL risk analyzers has been taken care of, we are working with the avast tech support... perhaps turning avast temporarily or simply replacing it with a better anti-virus software. We've been using here Microsoft Security Essentials, also a free software, for over 2 years and it's been flawless.

Yolian Ignatov Karl, we just sent you an email re: the JRE issue above.
It's worth pointing out that DeltaWalker 1.9.9.3 includes a private JRE, i.e. it'll not depend on what JRE is installed, or not, on the user's machine. So, going forward this will be a no-issue.

Karl M. Hi Yolian,

I solved this issue with JRE with installing the 64 bit JRE.

But I have the same issues with Avast Antivirus too. I solved it with temporarily disabling avast.

Yolian Ignatov We can say now with a high degree of certainty that now, as well as before, the problem with accessing www.deltopia.com from a machine with avast installed on it has been squarely with avast. We are still waiting to hear more from them, but every other trustable source we know of shows no problems whatsoever. Even the browser-side redirect that we thought might have been an issue, was not - it's has worked fine for 6+ years.

Both Google and Norton offer online tools to check the safety of web sites:

http://www.google.com/saf...ltopia.com

http://safeweb.norton.com...ltopia.com

So, in the way of suggestion - current Windows avast users might find that Microsoft Security Essentials offers much more reliable and transparent antivirus and anti-malware protection.

Diego SEO Hi,

I purchased Deltawalker ORO in 2011 but did not install until last summer.

After that, I faced a problem with UTF encoding. Diacritics are not displayed properly (á é í…).

I sent a support request on July 21 with the details and never got a reply.

I can't work without UTF so I resigned and discarded the Software.

Yolian Ignatov Diego, sincere apologies for not answering your inquiry; it's very rare, but it can happen.
A lot has changed in DW with regards to auto detection of character encoding since the summer of 2011. It now uses a different library that does an excellent job, including and specifically, detecting UTF-8 encodings. Please get the latest from here http://deltopia.com/downloads/ and give it a try. Do let us know the outcome (support at deltopia.com) and, if necessary, we'll take it from there. Thanks.

DroidLuvr @Deltopia: I have seen a few questions about about the features/capabilities of DW compared to Ellie and Beyond Compare, but I haven't seen any response. Could you elaborate any on the comparison of these software products? Also, as far as the "sync" versus comparison features: what key differences are there between DW and GoodSync Pro -- a software I AM familiar with and use :)

Also: could you highlight the differences between Standard vs. Pro, as well as Personal vs. Commercial. Being very new to this type of product, I am quite overwhelmed by the choices... Sorry if this has already been covered somewhere...

Edit: I found the comparison chart of the Standard vs. Pro at your website here: http://www.deltopia.com/c.../features/ but I still have the rest of the questions above...

Justine Jordan I have Norton Internet Security and was able to download and install the trial version. I haven't allowed Norton to upgrade to the latest version yet so maybe that makes a difference in its reporting. Anyway, I also tried ECMerge and find in my brief testing that the differences are a matter of individual preferences. DeltaWalker, for instance, recognizes .pdf files as text files and ECMerge looks at them as binary. Maybe conversion is needed for certain file types for ECMerge that might not be necessary when using DeltaWalker. ECMerge has more options for exporting to reports. It took over 7 mins. to produce a report with links in ECMerge and when I tired to produce a similar report in DeltaWalker, I hit a snag. A pop up dialog informed me that more memory is needed to perform the current operation and refers to FAQ 10. I don't know if I am looking in the wrong place but I cannot find the FAQ section on DeltaWalker's site/page.

Yolian Ignatov Lupke, Tortuga and DroidLuvr: everything that will be said below should be taken with a grain of salt as undoubtedly any statement from us may and will likely be perceived as biased, but since you are asking: :))

- The ECMerge, Beyond Compare (BC) and DeltaWalker (DW) feature lists are long enough for even us developers to get lost into them, yet the overlap is far greater than the differences. If you are looking for a specific feature, or feature set, please let me know and I'll be able to provide a specific answer.

- Having taken a look at both products at different points in time, I think it's fair to note that we, at deltopia, have picked up the Apple design philosophy bug a lot earlier, and have been affected by it to a much greater extent than either product. It would appear that ECMerge, and otherwise capable product, is rather immuned to it.
One thing stood out for us as we got more and more fascinated with the overarching simplicity and elegance of most Apple products and started applying it to DW some 5-6 years back was that as the feature list got longer and longer, the UI kept getting simpler and simpler. We kept taking out toobar buttons, various UI elements from the main windows... We became obsessed with performance as well - BC is truly exceptional in that it's the only product we know of whose folder comparison performance is comparable to that of DW; with most other folder comparison diff and sync tools the difference in speed is one or two orders of magnitude.

- We try hard not to ask the user questions we can find the answers for e.g. in DW you don't need to choose upfront what kind of comparison you want to make - text, image, folder; just drag-and-drop your resources and DW will determine their type and open the right type of comparison.

- Currently, BC is available on Windows and Linux; ECMerge and DW are available on the Mac as well. DW is the only diff tool, not just compared to these two, that has 100% native UI on all three platforms. Yes, it uses Java for the logic, but all the UI controls are the native UI controls of the respective platform. For many, especially in the Mac community this is a deal-breaker.

- We work equally hard to offer transparent support for all supported file types; in the area of various documents e.g. Office, iWorks as well as images, I believe DW offers the widest range of formats and the user needs not to worry about installing and configuring plugins, etc.

- One thing many users have told us find invaluable is the ability, and ease, of opening files for comparison from within a folder comparison - they simply open side-by-side (below default, can be easily customized) the folder comparison in their own window. You no longer need to switch b/n tabs or windows to see where exactly you were when you opened a pair of files for comparison.

In the end, as Justine Jordan's comment above suggests - one really needs to try the tools for him/herself. We have many users of either of the above two tools tell us they've switched to DW after owning one or the other. Of course, it's entirely possible that the opposite is also true, we just haven't been told about it. :)

As to GoodSync Pro - another fine tool - it's purely a folder comparison and synchronization tool and even as such, I'm not sure it has as many different ways of synchronizing folders e.g. high-level semi-automated sync options as well as lower-level where the user can select the [groups] of resources to sync and then trigger the sync. What truly separates the two however is that with DW you also get a state-of-the-art file comparison tool. This is important as it allows you, when in doubt and only you can determine if a file/folder can and should be overwritten by another one, to just double-click on the resources in question and see the differences with the best diff tool there is - your eyes.

Yolian Ignatov Hi Rodney,

The Word built-in comparison compares two documents, as seen, including any stylesheet changes for example. Sometimes this may be exactly what you need, but most often one cares about the changes in text and not in stylesheets, fonts, etc. The problem with including stylesheets changes in the comparison is that an innocuous change in font can turn the entire comparison into a see of red or crossed/underlined text and it becomes darn hard to find a changed word, even paragraph.
DeltaWalker, on the other hand, extracts the text only and compares it as text, stripping away any formatting, images, etc.

Thanks.

Yolian Ignatov Hi Mitchell, typically the versions need to be saved as separate files so that DW can open and compare them. If one has a single Word file with 'track changes' turned on and one can get to a version of interest a copy it to the Clipboard, then one can paste it and DW and compare it to any other version. I'm not sure, however, that Word gives that kind of access to older versions saved as part of the same file. Thanks.

It can help you determine in more ways than one if two, or three, files and/or folders are the same or different and if different, how they are different. DroidLuvr Hi, Yolian:

I purchased the Oro version here at BDJ during your last offer in December of 2012; at that time, the offer was that version 2 would be included in the purchase, so I shouldn't need to purchase again. Am I correct?

Also: FYI, I've never been able to get the "automatic updates," or even the manual "check for updates" to work. I didn't know this version was out until today :(

(I have 1.9.9.3, by the way)

Thanks!

Yolian Ignatov Hi DroidLuvr,

You are correct - you don't need to purchase DW again.

The "Check for Updates... " feature in 1.9.9.x doesn't detect newer 1.9.9.x releases. By design - the feature does not check the qualifier segment, i.e. the 4th segment. We simply ran out of release version numbers prior to the 2.0 release. Once 2.0 is out, updates will be properly detected again.

Thanks!

Yolian Ignatov Hi Matt,

I was asked a similar question during our previous BDJ promo. Little has changed in my view since then, so here's the link to that response:

http://www.bitsdujour.com...ntId=54626

I would only add a couple things to that:

1. Getting the functionality right is where things begin for us; we spent the bulk of our efforts getting the details right. For instance, for DeltaWalker 2.0 artwork, we've teamed up with some of the best graphic designers to offer a dramatically different icon design reflecting current trends in computer UI and aesthetics.

2. A quote by Robert Hayes, Harvard Business School, 1998:

COMPANIES COMPETED ON PRICE.
TODAY IT'S QUALITY.
TOMORROW IT'S DESIGN.

It has all the features (and more) and there's no personnal vs commercial license (you do have a standard and pro versions, but it's just that the pro version has more feature, and not for commercial).

The price is a little bit higher than today's promotion, but a lot cheaper than the regular price (30$ for standard and 50$ for pro).

I'll pass on this one, since I already have BC3 pro, but for those of you who don't have any, download both trial and test to see which one best suits your needs (http://www.scootersoftware.com/)

getraf I purchased DeltaWalker Oro Edition 1.9.9.5 as part of a MacUpdate bundle back in September 2013 (less than two months ago). Am I already eligible for a free upgrade to 2.0 Oro Edition as part of that purchase? or do I need to purchase the software through BitsDuJour again in order to receiving the special upgrade pricing to 2.0?

Yolian Ignatov Matt, as far as the name: Delta, in mathematics, stands for the variation of a variable, i.e. the difference b/n two values. With DeltaWalker, we wanted to convey that it's something that allows you to walk/navigate differences. In a niche where everything is called compare this/compare that, or merge this/merge that, we thought the name stoke a good compromise b/n being descriptive, yet unique.

getraf, no need to purchase DeltaWalker again; the MUPromo bundle purchase offers you the same 2.0 upgrade benefit.

Hazen, a new license key was just sent out to you.

Lito @Lupke Brother: I have done a comparison between Delta Walker and EC merge. For me if I had to have only one, it would be EC Merge. DW has a better interface IMO. It looks cleaner when comparing source code (I used some C code I wrote that had different versions). DW was easier to see the differences and where they went, while EC showed the differences but it looked a bit more cluttered. The Word 2010 docs I checked (.docx) both programs compared the files similarly enough that they were essentially the same for me. But where ECmerge beat DW, was in binary file comparison. In ECmerge, if you compare 2 binary files, it brings up 2 hex editor like views, while nothing got shown in DW. DW only offered to compare the 2 files, and tell me if they were the same (which with the trial Win64 version it said they were the same, but they were not). That said, I only did a quick test between the two and to be fair I was comparing the full version of ECmerge to DW win64 trial version. Also note that DW doesn't specifically say it does binary file comparisons, while ECmerge does, but it was a requirement I had for this kind of software.

Hope that helps you.

Yolian Ignatov Cary, the comment is valid! The key new feature in DW is scripting and the thing with scripting API is that you have one good chance to get it right. We spent way too long fine tuning it, but we are finally happy with it. We had to make some fairly dramatic changes that on the surface might seem trivial, but changing them in a backward-compatible way had ripple effects throughout the entire app.

2.0 is in beta testing now, if you'd like to take it for a spin, please let us know.

ETA - by the end of the month. Thanks!

Wol Barabas I'm sorry but I can't see the usefulness. I have Duplicate File Detective which shows the duplicate files and allows me to select either all of the first or second duplicates for deletion. This is what I want, fast and easy deletion of duplicates.

I downloaded the demo of this program and was unable to do the same. So how in the heck do you delete duplicates? Manually? Otherwise the program works faster than Duplicate File Detective, but it has no use for me unless the function of deleting duplicates is hidden somewhere. If that is the case then it needs to be more apparent, as it is with Duplicate File Detective, takes 2 seconds to figure it out... I'll wait a year for the next offering of this software and see if it works better.

David Volle I downloaded the trial, but have several problems.
1st when I click the icon to pick a folder for comparison the dialog only shows desktop and my user specific files, not my computer, not even C:
2nd after working around the first issue, I compared a folder full of images, and every image is shown as different due to a one hour difference in the timestamp on the files. (They were copied while in a different time zone) I looked for how to ignore this, but didn't find a way, and the compare is worthless if I can't choose to ignore the 1hr timestamp difference on the file!
Suggestions?

Norm Sash Apologies if this ends up being a duplicate post... I don't see my original post showing up...

Can someone comment on how to use this with FTP servers? Does DeltaWalker have its own FTP client that can map a drive, or do I need a separate FTP client. Can DW map FTP locations so they show up as a drive letter and can do sync compares that way?

And the same questions for cloud services like Amazon S3 or MS Azure.

David Volle One more question, this is supposed to scan zip files too correct?
I just scanned two zip files with different versions of a software project, and DeltaWalker showed them the same, even though I know for a fact they are different and have multiple files internally that are different.
How should zip archives be scanned as a folder or a file?

Yolian Ignatov Strata, DeltaWalker's startup time is something we have a plan for and we expect to get under the 1second threshold (on modern HW) shortly after 2.0 ships. It's easy to blame Java for it, but the reality is that it's the underlying app framework used by DW that negatively impacts the startup time. The framework, and by extension, DW is highly componetized, 135 plugins to be exact - a wonderful thing if one is looking to build a reusable and maintainable app, not so if a dozen+ plug-ins need to be loaded at startup and users expect a snappy launch. A C/C++ app with this level of componetization will have similar startup performance. The time it takes for the JRE to load is the time it takes for the DW splash screen (on Windows/Linux) to come up, typically a fraction of a second, even on an average machine. If still in doubt about Java's overall performance compare DW's folder comparison performance - arguably the most CPU-intensive operation, heavily multi-threaded - with that of any other diff tool, native or not.
We've tested, we've measured, we've prototyped and we know we can bring the statup time dramatically down. As an aside, the current DW release would be up in about 1-1.5 sec on a machine with a PCIe SSD DW.

Bear with us, we'll get there! Thanks!

Yolian Ignatov Hi Norm,

DeltaWalker has its own FTP client, no need to use another one, although you can (assuming that other FTP client maps the drive in Finder/Explorer).

Yes, you can do (S)FTP(S) compares and syncs of files and folders, all from inside DW using its own FTP client; it won't map the FTP location in Finder/Explorer though.

Amazon S3 or MS Azure are currently unsupported, however support for them is planned for the 2.0 release stream.

Bruce HI, thanks for the reply re OSX 10.6.
I am confused on the platforms pricing.
At first I thought it was both Mac & PC in Std for the $15. So I think I will buy the Std for $15 to cover both my Windows PC and my Mac.
I do not have Linux, so do not wish to pay for it.
Then, when I go to the Pricing page, it states:
"DeltaWalker Pro includes all standard features, plus:
Scripting, integrated script editor and runner.
Three-way file and folder comparison and automatic merging.
Structure visualization and comparison of XML files.
All three platforms—Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux."
So it looks like I should buy the Pro, at 50% off $50 = $25... Which I can swing and looks like a good deal to get both Mac and PC pro version for $25. So I decide to do that, then at last moment, I double check details,...
Then I look at Features page, and it contradicts the forgoing Pricing page, stating that Std and Pro support a single platform choice out of three... which then suggests that I'd have to buy the ORO to get both Mac and PC, which now brings price up to 50% off $80 = $40, which is definitely getting out of discretion purchase zone. Cheaper but not nicer to buy 2 x standards to get both Mac and PC.
Sad that the sale does not any more look as good for a low-budget two computer user like me any more. I would like to get the Mac + PC Pro, no linux, for the 50% off $50 = $25 which the Pricing page suggests is possible.
Can I do this?

Yolian Ignatov Hi Overtkill,

I haven't looked at Ultra Compare up until your question. Just downloaded the Mac version to try the features you expressed interest in. Perhaps their Mac release is still new, but after an out of memory message at startup and having to Force quit the app because I attempted a folder comparison with ~50k files and it froze, I just tried opening a small .css file. It showed it as plain text, meaning no syntax highlighting. Same for a .js file. My goal here isn't badmouthing the competition, just sharing my brief first experience. Their Windows version might as well be more stable and/or feature rich.

As far as comparing .css, JavaScript, PHP, and other popular markup and programming language source files, DeltaWalker offers syntax highlighting (for a total of some 50 programming languages). You also might appreciate its speed, polish and overall minimalist design.
We are just a few days away from releasing DW 2.1 with a long list of new features and enhancements; if interested in trying it out, please drop us a line support_at_deltopia.com and we'll share the latest early access with you by the end of today.

Yolian Ignatov Hi Susan,

It certainly has been a design goal for us to have http://www.deltawalker.com offer a balanced content for all supported platforms. If you arrive on it from an OS different than Windows, you'll need to click on the little Windows toggle in the center of the page to get to Windows content - screenshots, downloads etc.

DeltaWalker was first released on Windows, the OS X and Linux releases followed shortly. Windows is, and always has been, a top platform for us. I can think of several reasons why there may be a bit more attention to OS X in terms of user reviews and marketing effort:
- DeltaWalker exhibits a minimalist design approach that, at least historically, has been an Apple trademark. It would seem that this approach has resonated well with OS X audience.
- Mac users, at least historically, have been a bit more vocal and engaged when it comes to software, hence the majority of the reviews and feedback are from Mac users.
- When DeltaWalker was releases 8 years ago, the Mac diff tool space was a lot less crowded than the Windows one, so it made a bit more sense for us to focus our marketing efforts in an area with bigger return on investment.

That aside, DeltaWalker is not a port of one platform to another; every bit of functionality is available on all three platforms, short of a few obscure file ops that are just not easily/universally available on Linux. It's probably more accurate to say that it blends, what we find to be ,the best of all three supported platforms.

Thank you for the thought-provoking question.

Yolian Ignatov Dear Gerald,

We always answer upgrade requests, most often within few min to few hours. I see that you are a registered customer of ours, however I'm not seeing any recent emails from you; nothing in the spam folder either.

Could you please email us at deltopiainc-at-gmail.com ? Your v2 key will be on its way in no time. If we don't hear from you, we'll simply send it to the email address we have on file.

Constantin Florea @Tiffiny User, I am sorry about the issue. The EveryDay day deal for this product has ended a long time ago (had an end date which has already passed) but our system considered this EveryDay deal active because it didn't take into consideration the end date. We are going to have this fixed. The EveryDay deal for this product is now entirely removed.

B Josephs Hi. Thanks for the deal. I never upgraded to version 2, but I'm see I'm missing out on a lot!
Does it still use Java?

Yolian Ignatov Hi B Josephs,

Yes, many reasons to upgrade to DeltaWalker v2: http://www.deltawalker.co...worthy.jsp

Java is still the language/runtime of choice. Since ~ couple years DW ships with its own, private JRE so Java needs not be installed on the host computer.

Daniel Gaudet I purchased DW 2 Oro as part of the promotion today and I have a few questions.

First the license shows up as "Deltopia DeltaWalker 2.1.1.201501201410 Oro Edition Personal". Should it not show up as a Professional license instead of Personal?

The second question has to do with XML support. I have a couple of XML files (SAML Assertions in a SOAP envelope) that I am trying to compare, but I don't see anywhere to compare the structure. All I see in the lower left corner is UTF-8. Is there anything I need to enable to compare the structure? The file names have .xml for their extension.

Yolian Ignatov Hi Daniel,

Considering that you purchased DeltaWalker Oro, the About dialog correctly shows Oro for the edition; your point is also valid as Oro is essentially Pro on all supported platforms. Personal is a leftover from an earlier licensing type that no longer exists - Commercial & Personal. It's been taken out in the upcoming DW v2.1.2.

As to comparing XML files - we dropped the structure XML comparison in favor of XML beautification and canonicalization - two options available in the context sensitive menu when a file is recognized as XML. Beautification typically offers a more compact and better aligned representation, while retaining comments. Canonicalization, on the other hand, is more conservative in deciding which space & new line characters can be formatted out or not, ensures that attributes are alphabetically ordered and strips away all comments.

Please contact our support if we could be of further assistance on the subject.

B Josephs @ Yolian
I like the enhancements and feature set. I assume that the private JRE is maintained and updated entirely through Deltopia, and that by design it's less prone to security issues. Is this correct, or does it only mean I don't have to bother installing JRE from Oracle?

Thanks for the offer - I probably will go pro...
Thanks BDJ!

Daniel Gaudet @Yolian: Thanks for the prompt response. Thanks for clarifying the licensing question.

I do have some additional questions regarding XML comparison which I will send to your support organisation.
Jun 9 2015 at 8:50pm Copy Link
0
Yolian Ignatov @ B Josephs: Indeed, every DeltaWalker release ships with the latest JRE at the time of that release. We are not aware of a single security issue related to private JRE installations; all Java security issues we know of are related to the Java browser plugin, so yes, by its very of scope and usage, a private JRE is as safe a runtime as they come. The private JRE also means that you need not bother installing the Oracle, or any other, JRE in order to run DeltaWalker.

Thanks!

Gonzo Thanks for the quick reply Yolian. One more question:
Is there an upgrade path between editions? How about between platforms?
Say, today I buy the Standard version for Windows. If tomorrow I want to buy the Pro version for Windows, or maybe the Pro version for Linux, or simply upgrade to Oro... do I have to pay full price? Or are the discounts for existing users of "lower" editions?
Aug 8 2016 at 9:33am Copy Link

Yolian Ignatov Hi Gonzo,
Upgrades between editions only entail paying the difference in price, for instance $20 when upgrading from Standard to Pro. Just drop us a line at support at deltopia.com or sales at deltopia.com. Thank you.

Yolian Ignatov A license for a different platform counts as a new license; in that case the best approach is usually getting the Oro version - you get the full functionality on all 3 platforms.

Yolian Ignatov Hi John,
Thank you for the kind words. Indeed, the current version of DeltaWalker supports Dropbox and Google drive, please note however that Pro or Oro edition is required.
If you are upgrading from DW v1 to v2 the upgrade is 50% off current prices; the same 50% can be applied in you upgrade to Pro or Oro at the time of v1 to v2 upgrade.
If you are upgrading from DW v2 Standard to v2 Pro/Oro you only need to pay the difference in price.
Thank you.

J Hi Yolian,

Thank you for your reply.

Your said "It's unlikely DeltaWalker 3.0 will be available before the end of 2016."

"... it's unlikely" is certainly making me hesitate on making a purchase of your 'Pro' version. Your 1.x version existed for around six years and ended with the high version number of 1.9.9.6.

Do you plan on having the current version 2 to go up to the same high version number (ex. 2.9.x.x)?

I'm in no immediate need for DeltaWalker as I'm currently using a competitor's software. I'd like to take advantage of today's sale price but not if I knew version 3 is releasing early next year or sooner.

Would you allow for a free upgrade to 3.x if DeltaWalker 3 is to release in the next x months?

Also, do you have plans for the comparison of binary files?

Thank you.

Yolian Ignatov Hi J,

I wish I could be more specific about the timeframe for the DeltaWalker 3 release, however our major releases are feature/product-driven rather than calendar-driven and they are ready when their features have been completed.

When we know that DW v3 release is imminent, we'll likely announce specifics on the upgrade policy, it's a bit early to commit to that now as well.

The one thing I can commit however is the availability of binary file comparison and editing.

Thank you.

What to do ?

Yolian Ignatov Hi K. Christoph,

The DeltaWalker Windows installer requires admin privileges to run; if the installer is failing when run with admin privileges, then please drop our support a line and we'll offer troubleshooting ideas.

Please note that we'll be providing a zip installer within a week or so which will not require admin privileges - a simple unzip is all it takes to install DW. If you can wait for it to become available, that might be the easiest way around the problem you are seeing.

Thanks,
Yoli
