Virus Scan for DeltaWalker

Jonathan Keener I currently use UltraCompare UE3, so I was really looking at the feature set of this app to see if there was a compeling reason to add it to my collection. A key feature that UltraCompare is missing that I really like the idea of is the true structured XML compare (DeltaWalker) vs. a text compare of XML in UltraCompare. My only reservation in adding this to my collection is support for running from a USB stick. That was a key selling point when I got UltraCompare. So is there a way to run this from a USB stick?

Kevin P I've recently switched from Windows to a Mac and it's really killing me that I can't find a file compare/merge tool as good as Beyond Compare (Scooter Software). Araxis Merge comes close, but still not as nice, IMO.

I'm looking at DeltaWalker closely, but one downside is that it doesn't appear I can set it as the default compare/merge tool for the Versions SVN client. This is not the fault of DeltaWalker, but does make me less inclined to consider it.

Yolian Ignatov Thanks for the question, Jonathan. To run DeltaWalker from a USB stick on any of the supported platforms simply use the ZIP package to install it on the USB stick. DeltaWalker requires JRE 1.5 or newer so either the target machine should have it, or the /bin and /lib JRE folders should be copied under a /jre folder located under the /DeltaWalker folder (default installation). We used to offer a DeltaWalker/JRE bundles specifically for this purpose, we'll offer them again shortly as there've been several requests like yours lately.

Yolian Ignatov Hi Kevin, DeltaWalker is among the diff tools there are published integration scripts for on the Versions' website: http://groups.google.com/...ions/files . The script appears correct and I know we have Versions' users out there. If there are any issues, please let us know, we'll address them and work with the Versions folks if necessary. We provide a number of integration scripts for other SCMs e.g. Git, Subversion, Mercurial, etc. - currently available in the online help, the "Integrating DeltaWalker with Other Applications" topic. They should be published on our web site tomorrow as well.

Tips on integrating DeltaWalker with Mercurial can be found in the online help; for convenience, here they are:

Mac OS X
Add the following to Mercurial's configuration file ~/.hgrc to instruct Mercurial to use DeltaWalker as its external diff and merge tool:

[merge-tools]
deltawalker.executable = /usr/local/bin/hg-merge-dw.sh
deltawalker.args = $local $other $base $output

Create the shell script hg-merge-dw.sh and place it in /usr/local/bin/; if you place them elsewhere, make sure its location is updated in the ~/.hgrc.:

Charlotte Sinclaire I am looking for a program that will help me compare folder and file names -- not so much the content of the files (yet) -- across several drives that I have installed on my computer. Two of my drives are from an older computer and I need to consolidate, as I have a lot of redundancy between them and some of the files I've copied from them to my newer drives. I am wasting a lot of disk space, but fear losing something by deleting precipitately without comparing -- but it is a big job, as all my drives are quite large and were in use for a long time on the old machine, so there is a lot to compare. Later, I'll compare the contents, but meanwhile, will DeltaWalker help me just at the folder/file window level and do so between drives on the same machine, vs. across a network setup?

S B DeltaWalker looks nice. Is there an upgrade discount from the Standard to the Oro edition? Do you anticipate being able to handle blocks of text that have been moved? Can you set preferences for how whitespace/linebreaks/capitalization are used in file comparisons? Thanks!

DeltaWalker should be able to help you in consolidating your files and folders coming from an old computer. The default folder comparison settings are such that it'll compare files with matching names by their sizes and/or timestamps; it'll also highlight files and/or folders that have been added or deleted. I should only add that it's worth keeping in mind that the folders you choose for comparison and synchronization should be of manageable/reasonable size - up to 80-100,000 items each, or if you want to play it safe ~50,000.

Moved Blocks: if a block of text (for example, one routine within a source file) is moved within the file to a different location, many comparison utilities will report the move as *two changes* a deletion and an insertion (also, any changes *within* the routine will not be reported). A few (very few) utilities will report the block of text has having been moved *one relocation* (and might show changes within it). Is this kind of function anticipated for DeltaWalker? Also, I may have missed the upgrade policy between versions. Thank you!

DeltaWalker currently reports a moved block of text as a deletion followed by an addition. We'll need to look into what's involved in providing the type of moving you describe; it looks like a useful feature.
A related, but different, feature in DW is what we call QuickDiffs - the little colored rectangles in the line column strips that appear as soon as a change is made to a file open for comparison - those can be useful in determining the history of a change, possibly explaining a move of the kind you describe.

Wrt upgrades and updates - updates are free until the next major release of the product, in this case that'd be DeltaWalker 2.0. Major releases are not frequent - 2-4 years during which all releases are free for existing customers.

Furthermore, in the case of a major new release one needs to pay an upgrade price only if the product was purchased earlier than 6 months before the major release came out. Existing customers can upgrade to a major new release at 50% of the product's current price.

Charlotte Sinclaire I just installed DeltaWalker to try it before the Bits du Jour offer runs out at midnight tonight. It installed okay, but when it was launched, I got a message saying that it couldn't find the Java Runtime Environment, and it sites the install path as the place it was looking. During the install, I changed the default install path from Deltopia>DeltaWalker down to just DeltaWalker, something I always do during installs so that it is easier, later, to spot specific programs in the Program Files folder. I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

If not, could you help me out and pronto to figure out what the problem is? I wanted to try this out before I went to work, but now won't have the chance, and if I buy, it is going to have to be on faith, as I will have to buy from a remote location and won't be able to try it beforehand (won't be home from work until after midnight). So I hope you can provide some answers that can satisfy, even though I won't be able to test them; I can at least check and read my email, even if i can't be home to try it all out. Thanks!

I used the promo code, but the discount wouldn't show up, so I cancelled the first attempt and started over. When it still didn't show up, I decided to follow through, hoping the discount would show up at check-out. It didn't, so I was going to write to you about this anyway. MsJ J I'm such a legal klutz on licensing jargon.

"Licensed per user for non-concurrent use only, allowing transfer of a license to another owned computer."

Per User means I can install DeltaWalker on more than one computer the I operate (desktop & laptop, for instance) ???

--What if these two computers are NOT networked?
--What if they are?

Non-concurrent use means AS LONG AS I don't have DeltaWalker running on BOTH computers at the same time ???

"Allowing Transfer..." means if I get a new computer and take DeltaWalker off the old one, I can put it on the new one ???

Andy Tate Tried the demo on folder and file comparison and I like the interface.

Question: when it finds differences in say an .xls file is there an easy way to open the two files in Excel rather than DeltaWalkers file window. Similar for picture files - I could it open them in my preferred picture viewer?

Something like in Windows Explorer you can do an Open and also an OpenWith.

You see I don't do enough code editing to justify purchase if I can't find a way for it to show me other file formats in the appropriate viewer.

Tazzie I was just in the process of paying via Paypal, and my browser crashed just as I was in the last step. When I restarted it said to check Paypal after 30 min, but that would be too late, but I did save a screenshot of the paypal screen that showed I was making a payment, so is there a way I can finish this even after the deadline ...
