Daniel Walker It seems that all these formats are primarily 'music' files. How about some we are forced to work with for 'voice' interviews - ATRAC & DSS in particular. Will this accept/convert/edit ... these?
Oct 15 2009 at 8:01pm Copy Link

Doug Atkinson Daniel,

Not many programs directly support these two formats. Olympus' software lets you convert DSS to WAV, and there are a few other programs out there for converting ATRAC to WAV. After this, you can then edit the file in Dexster.

S B At Top Ten Reviews' review of Audio Editing Software, Dexster is ranked #1 (!).

Is Dexster compatible with Windows 7 x64?

Daniel Walker I know that not many programs support these two formats. I know there are -other- programs that will convert either ATRAC or DSS into WAVs.

The fact they are not supported many places is -exactly- the reason I am interested in a better solution. I do not want to have to use two pieces of software to accomplish something this simple - include support for converting these into the program.

Actually Dexster is just first in the list there - not 'ranked' first. Look at the editing options. I do like Dexster better at first look.

I'd really like an equalizer control at every 250Hz, and plenty of notch filter options along with the ample editing choices already provided. I do like the program overall, just needs to be a little broader to be really useful for what I need to do - which is simple work really.

S B Daniel,

Many thanks for your insights and intelligent perspective. As a complete novice in this area, I (we) value your perspective highly.

There *is* competition in this area, and a few other apps at about the same retail price seem very good also. The $20 savings on an important product can get eaten up in months of inconveniences and limitations. It does look as if your quick evaluation was good and Dexster is probably quite good for many of us.

FWIW, Top Ten Reviews rankings often seem a bit inconsistent with the longer reviews they have, but I think that Dexster did take the top:
"Create supersonic, professional sounding audio projects with Dexster Audio Editor. Even beginners can record, extract, edit and burn easily with our #1 choice and "TopTenREVIEWS Gold Award" winner."

Thanks, again, for your insights!

Daniel Walker Make no mistake about it - I do think it was the best of the bunch. I like the interface too. Just looking for ways to NOT have to explain conversions and editing to Judges or spending time in court testifying as to what was done to an audio file to allow it to be played on the widest range of equipment.

Since I do little music editing - top and tail my mp3 conversions those are of less importance than finding a solid singular way of dealing with 'other' formats (mostly ATRAC & DSS as that is what most portable equipment uses and many businesses use that as well - most lawyers and government offices I've dealt with same problem). So I'd like to see one program that could deal with those as well as the more 'normal' ones that are included. I record directly to mp3 nowadays.

No looking for some full forensic editing program - just as much as we can in one simple to use, visual, program. And Dexster fits the bill as much as any and I like it.

Stephen Kreyling I downloaded the demo and running windows 7 32/64 ultimate version. The software worked great. Using a Logitech usb headset and the results were good. I like that the demo does not water mark the files during the trial. I need to make a .mp3 for a web site and tested it out and worked. Will buy. I hope version 3 is within the year for the free upgrade.

Chris Ingham A few observations based on a trial install and 5 minutes of use:

1. The installer politely asked me where to place its Start Menu shortcuts, and then created a top-level Dexster folder anyway

2. A good amount of my music collection is encoded with Musepack (not MusicPack as stated in your website and help file Introduction page!). I could open my v7 .mpc encoded files, but not the more recent v8. Also, I could not save back to .mpc, so I assume there's an initial conversion to .wav, as that's the default Save As... format? I know there's probably a half dozen of us who give a rip about Musepack editing, so there aren't any dealbreakers here for anyone else. I'm always impressed when I see softare that supports it at all, but would have been thrilled with latest version and especially native editing support.

3. The non-native UI is a bit awkward, both and looks and behavior (e.g., I can't resize a non-maximized window?!). Unless this was done for multi-platform support (I only see Windows on your website), it just detracts from the UI experience.

For me, based on these first impressions, Dexter isn't $20 better than Audacity at this point, and especially not $45 better. I'll tick "Want this" and see how the product's coming if and when you show up on BDJ again...

Software Guy Don't do too much with music but do quite a bit with audiobooks. You have a planned feature to split audio tracks automatically - sounds good. because we often wind up with (initially) a single file that can go easily to 10 or 14 hours. Not a problem for mp3 players that can tag locations (to resume where you left off) but a big problem for mp3 players that don't tag. So when we can we split the files as the writer intended - but often we can not. So what we like to do is determine a split time - say 10 minutes - and have the software look for the best break around every 10 minutes plus or minus a minute. This approach works most of the time and is quick, so if you could - please keep something like this in mind. Usually chapter breaks have enough silence to look like track breaks and that musict rack approach may work also.
Just thought you might keep ebooks in mind as the music only editors often do not have the little features desired by applications other than music.
And you might ask -how do we get 10 to 14 hours of narration without a break??? We let some of the newer, nicer computer voices read the .doc files directly into mp3. And sometimes we get some very long audio files.

And can it batch process multiple mp3s or other audio files.

Rick NG Hi Dave,

You may use the High Pass Filter (under the filters menu) to filter out the background voice.

High Pass Filter allows all frequencies higher than the specified frequency to pass and reduces the amplitude of signals with frequencies lower.

You may specify the frequency value in High Pass and preview the result before apply.

VLM Thanks Rick - It occurs to me that I'm using the wrong terminology, therefore not asking the question I intend. When I say "tracks", I do not mean "songs" (or whatever), but rather this voice, that voice, this instrument and so on. Like having multiple sound graphics on the screen, each representing a portion of the whole sound.

For example, suppose I record a teleconference and split the audio for station (speaker, me) and audience (people calling in or asking questions and the like). So these appear as 2 somethings, but I believe it's one "track".

Is this more clear? Please feel free to set me straight! :)

Rick NG Hi VLM and Chris,

There is no limit to the number voices you can record on a song. You can record your own voice, the audience, and save all as a song or split as multiple songs.

Once the audio data is overlapped with multiple voices/audio, there is no way to separate them. We can only reduce vocals if the audio data contained of music and vocals.
Softdiv Software Sdn Bhd - Dec 16 2012 at 5:16pm Copy Link
0
VLM So as long as each voice/instrument is recorded separately, they can all be edited separately, and with no limit. That's really nice!!! Only when they are combined can they not be separated again.

Correct?

So to be clear (and make sure that I understand...
I can record from a Stereo tape
to Dexster and will have two Stereo Tracks that I can do either of two things with.
1. I can merge them together to end up with ONE Track.
2. I can save the separately and end up with TWO tracks.

If I choose #2, can I still play the two tracks Simultaneously (after saving) so that they will sound just like the original (source) recording ??

Doug Atkinson A lot of what sets audio editors apart is simply how well the interface works for you. I've never liked the interface for Audacity, for example, but my son prefers it. From a quick glance, both Audacity and Dexter offer similar functions, but Dexter offers audio cleaning filters built in, while I think you'd have to search for some 3rd party plug ins for Audacity.

As for Camtasia, they are completely different products. Camtasia is a screen grabbing program for making videos of your desktop and is great for making software "how-to's", for example. Dexter, on the other hand, is dedicated toward audio editing. You can use it to take that ending off an MP3 that you've always hated, or you can copy your cassette tapes to digital format; stuff like that.

Rick Edwards Thank you, Doug. I had hoped that the vendor would have a list of reasons you'd want to pay for something that is otherwise free. I haven't used the Dexter UI but it seems to me that it would be pretty easy to improve on Audacity's. I have to use online help every time to find the unnatural (to me) keyboard shortcuts that aren't (and apparently can't be) buttons on the screen (such as 'zoom').

Rick NG Hi Herman,

SmartSound plugin is part of Adobe Premiere and Adobe's Products. Most likely you have Adobe's software installed and the uninstallation was unclean.

Open Programs and Features by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Programs, and then clicking Programs and Features.

Select SmartSound Quicktracks Plugin, and then click Uninstall.

Amit I am not pro in audio editing field - but want to say like remix my some original downloaded songs - like just 4-8 settings a little altered and i get in output a remixed / other flavored of the song.

so is dexter that simple to do so - or it is, for these above things needs a learning curve and time.

Any other users also if they can tell me on complkexity in making some very good transitions / remixing using dexster. thanks

Jym Ferril May this program be installed on more than one computer at a time, as long as it is being used by only one at a time?
May the program be transferred from one computer to another?

I am concerned that you seemed to jump over Jym Ferril's question. Could you please address his question as well?

Rick NG Hi Jym,

Dexster is licensed per computer, and not per user. You may transfer to another computer as long as there is only one active copy at one time.

Gary Smith Oops ... sorry Stephen Kreyling.
@Rick Ng
I am concerned that you seemed to jump over Jym Ferril's question. Could you please address his question as well? I am thinking in regards to a computer that has multiple OSes installed. The Fine Print states "Dexster is licensed per computer, and not per user" so same computer with OS Win7 and OS Win 10 installed on different bootable drives should be fine, correct? No double activation glitches?

Rick NG Hi Mappi75,

Dexster is already Windows 10 (32/64-bit) compatible and shouldn't have any issue. If there is, it will be fixed in the upcoming version.

Wiggle How to remove audio from MP3 file? Is it possible?
Aug 5 2016 at 8:31pm Copy Link

Rick NG Hi Maz,

You can only reduce the vocal, http://www.dexster.net/de...ocals.html

If the music and vocal were saved separately (separated on left and right channel), you can use the Mix Stereo Channels to remove, http://www.dexster.net/de...right.html

Use Mute if you would like to remove only certain part of the audio, http://www.dexster.net/dexster_mute.html

HJ User I installed the software. I loaded in an mp3 file and the software appeared to work as described.

I then attempted to record the audio track of a streaming video. The software would not start the record process. Is this software incapable of recording streaming audio?

Gary User what are the main differences between audacity and Dexster?
Feb 9 at 4:30am Copy Link

Rick NG Hi Stephen,

Thank you for your message. If nothing goes wrong, the upcoming version 5.1 shall be ready in 2Q 2023. Here's just a rough list of planned upcoming improvements:

Vocals reduction - with ability to reduce vocals at any part of the song.
Batch Automation - more editing automation will be added.
GUI improvement
Bugs fixes
New feature
and others which we will announce upon release.
Gary User well I dried the trail - here's one difference I found. When I change the tempo in Audicity of a text to speech mp3 created by a separate text to speech program, I get exactly what I would expect. When I try to do that in Dexter it immediately ups the temp to sound like the Chimpmunks on cocaine and can't be slowed
