Virus Scan for Doppelganger

H. H. Hallo,
just tried your software, and it seems to be working: Nevertheless I think, that it lacks of an iomportant feature: the ability to either show the duplicate files in an explorer-like tree or - at least - to e.g. have the ability to rightdlick on aduplicate and then choose to open the folder-location in explorer.
I think this featurecan be very important, because it gives a much better overview, if one really want to delete it, because when being shown in its folder, one has the overview over the whole context.
Do you plan to implement this feature in the near future (or is it already available and I just didn´t figure it out?)
wiht kind regars
H.H.

Art (Salty Brine Software) Hi HH,

You can right click on the file in the Duplicate Details window and pull up a Windows Property Page for the the file which shows all of the file details. If it's a media file (music/photo/video) you can also view additional media file details from the right click menu as well.

So you should be able access all of the details you want about any file from the right click pop-up menu.

Amit 1) Does it have the capability of identifying same pictures - even though they have different names - but absolutely are SAME VISUAL CONTENT of each other ?

2) One more thing - I have a file manager (and also windows explorer ) which by default opens with limited privileges - and does not show up all the context menu entries - how can i get the context menu entry in it ? Any way ?

Thanks.

Art (Salty Brine Software) Hi Amit,

1) Yes. DG can identify if two pictures are the same, or if two music files are the same, or if two docs are the same, etc... even if their names are different.

2) I'm not entirely clear on the meaning of this question. Let me give it try anyway. Are you looking for a Doppelganger option in your Windows Explorer context menus? If so, you won't find one. DG does not appear in your system context menus. To run it, you have to select it from your Start Menu.

Emil Kucera Hi, Policy says licensed per user, but "allows installation on 1 computer, but Doppelganger may not be used at exactly the same time on each of them". Is installation on desktop + laptop (same user) not allowed?
If not, it looks as if one could run the search on a networked laptop from the desktop where the software is installed. Am I reading this right?

Emil Kucera Had a note here about a difficulty with downloading trial, which has since cleared up, hence the edit, sorry.
May I say I have had FolderMatch for some years and am well pleased with it - hope this one will be as good.

Nelson Carvalho Hi,
Sorry my English.
I installed Doppelganger (Win7Pro). I called the program and I got a window 'Doppelganger'. This window closed and the program was 'lost', but I know that it is in memory (System Explorer and Whats Running). There is no icon in systray. I can not see any way to restore the window/program. Can you help me ?
Thank you.

Art (Salty Brine Software) Hi Emil,

To install and run DG on both your laptop and desktop you'll need two licenses. You could do what you suggest however and just install it on the desktop and scan the laptop that you've connected via Windows Networking.

Art (Salty Brine Software) Hi Nelson,

I suspect that some other program may be blocking DG from running. We can test this by rebooting into Windows Safe Mode and launching DG again. If the problem does not happen in Safe Mode, this confirms that some other software is causing a problem.

If that turns out to the case, you'll need to turn off startup items to find the offending program. You can use msconfig.exe to do this. Contact us on our online support form if you need additional guidance with this.

Firewall/Security type programs are often responsible for this. If so you should be able to configure the firewall/security software to exclude DG and its files from its blocking operations.

Danny It's only CRC/MD5 compare? Or True byte-by-byte comparison?

Apr 1 2013 at 12:46am Copy Link

0

Art (Salty Brine Software) HI Danny - DG uses a very accurate hash algorithm when comparing file contents.

Salty Brine Software - Apr 1 2013 at 6:20am Copy Link

0

Danny @Art Araya,

Art, thank you!

But how many% accuracy should I take it?

And which file types and folders can this handle?

Apr 1 2013 at 6:27am Copy Link

0

Art (Salty Brine Software) Hi Danny - well this conversation can get very theoretical. I'll try to respond on a surface level here and if you want to discuss further please write to me at art @ saltybrine . com.

"Theoretically" a hash algorithm can generate the same hash value for two dissimilar items. So the percentage is always less than 100%. The exact number is going to depend on the algorithm chosen, the implementation of that algorithm chosen, the type of data, etc... But the number is so low that in practice it is negligible. We've use hashing algorithms for years in many of our software with great success. We have tens of thousands of users from all over the world using these hash algorithms for over a decade and not had problems.

A byte by byte is of course "better" in that the results will always be 100% but the performance of such a system would be MUCH too slow for the average user. Nobody wants to wait that long for a 100% result when they can get a 99.999999% result in a fraction of the time which will work just as well in locating their duplicates.

If you are concerned, please download DG and try it out on your files to make sure it detects all of your duplicates before purchasing it.

Pavi Johnson Hi, I am glad this deal is extended as I didn't have time to order yesterday.

Quick question: is Doppelganger a subset of the features of FolderMatch? That is, does Doppelganger do duplicate checking, and Folder match duplicate checking plus folder comparison?

Thanks, /Pavi

Scott Van Leeuwen I have Windows 8 but it is not shown as supported. Is it?

Apr 2 2013 at 1:28am Copy Link

0

Art (Salty Brine Software) Hi Pavi - DG did begin its life as the duplicate file finder in FolderMatch. But then we made changes to the functionality and the underlying code so that it is more powerful and more of a stand-alone tool than the one in FM.

Salty Brine Software - Apr 2 2013 at 5:49am Copy Link

0

Art (Salty Brine Software) Hi Scott

DG has not been "officially" tested on Windows 8. We've got users using it successfully and one of our employees has Windows 8 on their computer and it runs well. We've heard from only one user that has problems running it on a Windows 8 computer but we've not determined that this is the problem. Your best bet is to download the trial and run it. If you can launch it, you'll be able to use all of the functionality.

Apr 2 2013 at 8:29am Copy Link

Norwel Gordon What does this mean?

Each license allows installation on "1 computer", but Doppelganger may not be used at exactly the same time on "each" of them.

Apr 2 2013 at 8:37am Copy Link

0

Art (Salty Brine Software) Hi Gary - it is not portable. It must be installed on the computer you want to run it on. It can't be run from a thumb drive - for instance.

Salty Brine Software - Apr 2 2013 at 8:40am Copy Link

0

Art (Salty Brine Software) Hi Norwel - LOL It looks like you may have found a "bug" in the documentation.

Allow me to try to simply the license terms for you. The license is one per computer. So if you want to install and run DG on one computer, you need to purchase one license. If you want to install and run DG on two computers, you need two licenses. Etc...

Salty Brine Software - Apr 2 2013 at 8:43am Copy Link

0

Norwel Gordon So if I buy four licenses and install on four computers Doppelganger may not be used at exactly the same time on each of them?

Very strange license term.

I think I will pass.

Apr 2 2013 at 8:49am Copy Link

0

Art (Salty Brine Software) Hi Norwel - no, that is not correct. please forget that clause and just use my simple explanation above. you may use all of your purchased licenses at any time. sorry for the confusion.

Salty Brine Software - Apr 2 2013 at 9:32am Copy Link

0

Norwel Gordon Still not clear.

Does that mean I must purchase one license for my desktop computer and one more for my laptop or notebook.

Art (Salty Brine Software) Yes Norwel that is correct.

Norwel Gordon Thank you for your clarification.

Then you should correct the misleading statement shown under the "Fine Print" tab that states;
"Doppelganger is licensed per user"

Apr 2 2013 at 11:21am Copy Link

0

Pavi Johnson Hi, the BDJ crowd is notoriously hard on "per computer" license terms, instead preferring "per user".

Best, /Pavi

Apr 2 2013 at 12:14pm Copy Link

0

Norwel Gordon Pavi Johnson makes a valid point but either way the terms should be stated clearly without contradictions. Potential buyers should not have to spend hours trying to get clarification.

In this case it still seems that there is serious difference between the terms expressed for full price purchase from their web site and the terms expressed on the BDJ offer and responses to my questions from the vendor.

Apr 2 2013 at 12:48pm Copy Link

0

Pavi Johnson Norwel Gordon has exposed a serious flaw here: If you buy at the regular price, you can install on multiple machines as single user or single machine with multiple users.

From their license terms:

"One registered copy of 'the software' may either be used by a single person who uses the software personally on one or more computers, or installed on a single workstation used non simultaneously by multiple people, but not both."

Ouch! Are we getting the same license terms with this deal, or are they modified to "per computer" only as Art Araya seems to indicate?

Apr 2 2013 at 1:01pm Copy Link

0

Art (Salty Brine Software) The correct terms are the license terms that I expressed earlier. If there's a discrepancy with the terms as they appear in the product docs or here on BDJ, fear not. We will honor the stated terms. Pick the one that works best for your situation and we will honor them. Consider this like what happens when you go shopping and the item is incorrectly priced - most stores will honor the price unless it's outrageous. We will likewise honor the terms in our docs or on this offer. Don't get too bogged down on this. We'll work with you.

Bertie Brummel Quote from the fine print section:

"Doppelganger is licensed per user, so if more people are going to use Doppelganger you will need to purchase additional copies.
Each license allows installation on 1 computer."

That's a contradiction. As long as I am the only user, the software should allow installation on multiple PCs if licensed per user.

Is Win 8.x supported?

1

Art (Salty Brine Software) Hi Bertie - Yes, Win 8 is supported. In terms of your licensing question - for every computer that you are going to install and run DG on, you'll need a license.

SKY Hello Art,
I wanted to order your program but the agent you are using, is forcing me to give a valid phone number. Will not accept a number like 0000000000. I would not make up a fake number but I never give out my personal number on international software purchases. I also do not use PayPal, and nor the PayPro Global fraudsters.

I have accounts with Share-it, MyCommerce, Digital River, FarStone, Cleverbridge and Avangate, etc., for years, also have been using Conceiva, FastSpring (?), etc. without problems, so if you can arrange for me to pay through any of these billing agents, I'd be pleased and purchase it right away. Thank you.
