What are people saying about Drive Encryption

Keith Anderson Hi,

I have a couple of questions.
1) is the trail version the full version?
2) if so, could someone verify that it really encrypts the data?

Below is what I did. Could someone else check it. Thanks.

I downloaded and installed DriveEncryption.
On a micro-SD card, I ran Eraser to wipe everything on the card with random data.
I put 26 jpg files on the card.
I ran DriveEncryption and encrypted the card.
In my file manager, I clicked on the drive.
A message box stated that the card was not formatted and did I want to format it.
I click on Yes. I selected Quick Format and OK. It did a quick format.
I then ran a freeware program called PC Inspector Smart Recovery 4.5 by Convar.
I selected recovery for jpg files. When it was finished, it had recovered all 26 files and they were all viewable.

Could someone please verify it is encrypting the data files and not just hiding them. Thanks.

Thomas Lee The DriveEncryption encrypts the File Allocation Table for FAT format drive only. To get more security features, just convert the SD card to NTFS format first as below. 1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER. 2. In the command prompt window, type: convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs For example, typing convert D: /fs:ntfs would format drive D: with the ntfs format. You can convert FAT or FAT32 volumes to NTFS with this command. For details, see OK, now you can put files, encrypt and check it.

Keith Anderson No, I get an message...
Conversion from FAT volume to NTSF volume is not available.
This is on a XP Pro PC.

Has anybody else tried to recover files after doing a quick format?

Tom Colvin The developer's homepage offers virtually no information about the product, other than the info already at Bits du Jour. I'd be very nervous using something as invasive as encryption without more detail.

By the way, can the program run from a USB stick itself, and then encrypt individual files and folders on that stick?

XP User I couldn't do anything with it at all: I could only see the main screen for a second or two and then the computer blue-screened. Tried to run it twice, the same result. Uninstalled, moved on. HTH someone.

Steven Avery hi Folks

It looks like this is one of the occasional (rare) Bits Du Jour slipperaroos. I'll suggest you be especially cautious with any product in the security and encryption realm, vette them more carefully, since so much rides on the assurances and accuracy and integrity of the developer.. Even if the problem was only what was already acknowledged (oh, we do not really encrypt FAT 32) that should deep-six. And it looks like more. Thanks Keith for the legwork.
