What are people saying about Duplicate Cleaner Pro

Mike K BitsDuJour staff, thanks for response of my Duplicate Cleaner Pro proposal. This is an only a program with a find duplicate folders function. Will be waiting for discount day.

H. H. @ developer

I just tried duplicate cleaner pro and it seems to be an interesting alternative to other duplicate-finding software - especially the duplicte folders function and the feature that one can specify folders not to "scan against itself" are of great value.

Neevertheless the folowing questions / feature suggestions:
1. when spedifying a folder not to be searched against itself - does it mean the folder with all his subfolders - or may this be selectable in the future (whole folder with all subfolders or folder without subfolder)?
2. when searching for duplicate folders there seems to be something wrong regarding opening the folder of the resultlist in windows explorer ("open containing folder") - this context menu item seems to work fine with files, but when I tried it with folders, sometime a completely different (not the correct parent) folder was opened. May this be a bug= - will it be fixed?
3. feature suggestion: it would be fine if one could use all items of windows explorer context menu - so it would be fine if you could add the feature "explorer" which than would open the original explorer right-click menu and allow all the file actions (the software beyond compare manage to do this in their result list)
4. a) there has been another software on the market (atory dupe checker pro) , which unfortunately is no longer availabe, but their demo version showed some interesting features
-eg. a clearer interface - they used 6 different colors in the result list for the duplicate file-listing (not only white and blue)
b) they had implemented the possibility of a tree- view of the result list too
that was managed by bold titles of folders containing duplicates and bold names of the duplicate files itself - in one window
and in another window all the duplicates (with path, size,..)´of the selected file in the first window were additional listed.
Could you imagíne to add this feature in the future too?

Perhaps you can tell me, where I can post some screenshot to illustrate what I mean (your contact formular at your homepage does not allow to attend files)?

Thank you for considering and responding in advance

John H Duplicate archived and cloned folders are my real problem.

Count me in here!
Jun 2 2012 at 11:45pm Copy Link
James Roberts @H.H
I'll try and answer your queries -
1 - Yes this means the folder and the contained subfolders will not be scanned against itself. For instance, one folder set could be an already clean archive or backup you are scanning against a different folder. It might be an option for a future release to combine this with a 'no subfolders' flag.
2- I can't replicate this bug - can you post any screenshots to our forum?
3-Good idea, will look into this.
4-We used to use more, but people found it confusing as the colors had no meaning in themselves. Now they are just used to show the separations between groups, and will dynamically recolor depending on the sorting.
5-We've got some upgrades to the list view in the pipeline, but feel free to post ideas to the forum: It's at

Thanks for your interest!

John H I used this to scan 1 TB of files on a 2 TB hard drive. Many of the files are linked and put into virtual file folders and collections. So I just cant delete all my duplicates without breaking the virtual collections. My sloppy housekeeping is costing me 250 GB of hard drive space. Not the fault of your excellent software.

Any suggestions?

It helps to set the minimum file size to 50 or 100 MB otherwise it looked like it would have taken days to complete the scan. My duplicate problem is in Duplicated folders. I'm not concerned with the few MB the odd duplicate picture takes up.

It would help to be able to drag a range of folders into the files to be scanned. I had to individually click over 100 separate folders to do the scan I wanted.

Thriftslut In the middle of my giant disk-cleanup project, I experimented with the free version of the program. It gave excellent results with a much friendlier interface than the CloneSpy software I have used for many years. The paid version's has several features which might make it worth buying: It deals with folders, not just files, which Clonespy won't do. The image browser looks very nic and image comparer would be nice too.

Does anyone know if the program can be installed on all four computers in our home?

Quick tip: You can drag a range of folders from Windows Explorer and drop into Paths to Scan list.

Glad you like it! You can install on several machines - there is no DRM and the license allows you to install on several of your machines provided there is one user.
DigitalVolcano Software Ltd - Jun 5 2012 at 3:39am Copy Link
Software Guy The free version is one of the best duplicate finders and may meet the needs of many users.
A good review is here

Free vs pro features are here

A nice feature is that pro handles like and ***similar*** photos which is very handy. This means that you can find and delete all of those unneeded edits that you have consuming your precious hard drive space.

Best of all it is a user license allowing install on all of your computers. Bottom line - a very useful utility.

DroidLuvr I just had to throw in my 2 cents here! As a daily visitor to BDJ, and a former I.T. tech for 20+ years, I can speak very highly of Duplicate Cleaner Pro!! It's the BEST there is for what it does without a doubt!!

I used the free version for many many years, and did not hesitate to buy the Pro version when it came out last year for its additional features. Not only is the program itself excellent, the forum and the developer are super-responsive to ideas and help requests. The updates are ongoing, so this is definitely up to date software!! If you need a duplicate file/folder/image/sound finder, you will NOT BE SORRY to buy this at this great price!!!

And, no, I do not work for the developer or have anything to gain from my review - I'm just finally able to help here with anyone struggling with the decision of buying this. It helps me to hear other long-time users of software, so I just had to say that I consider this one of my MUST HAVES on all my machines - and the licensing policy is obviously awesome too...

VLM Has anyone used both this utility and NoClone? Would be interested any comparative comments.
Jun 5 2012 at 9:26am Copy Link
Thriftslut Some potential users of this software might not be aware that it is possible to catastrophically lose your data if you use programs like this to make deletions directly in your working files. You might even break your installation of Windows if the data is not on a partition other than the C: drive.

One of my colleagues has used a protocol for dupe removal which involves copying the original data to proxy folders where dupes can be eliminated, the file tree of the data reorganized and the reorganized data safely put back on the computer. He posted a screen shot of the process at It will give you some idea of the complexity of the task when large numbers of files are involved.

Duplicate Cleaner Pro could easily be used in such a protocol to finish the task safely. If you are a newbie at this, take a look at his screenshot..

James Roberts @Software Guy, @Droidluvr,
Thanks for your kind words! Development on Duplicate Cleaner is always ongoing :)

Interesting protocol, thanks for sharing. We always advise people to back up first and never run against system folders - in fact there is inbuilt protection against this.

H. H. @developer
Hallo, thank you for responding and considering further improvements of Duplicate Clleaner Pro, I´m looking forword
for improved versions and will support your work by bying a license.
Neveftheless addtional question/request: may there be possibilites to increase the speed of the true byte by byte comparison? Duplicate Cleaner Pro is very fast
when choosing SHA-Hash, but much (!) slower than noclone regarding the truee byte by byte comparison (tested it with about 17000 icon files
with about 14000 duplicate files. (perhaps it may have to do something with the search algorithm , probaby files of similiar size may be handled differently by
the programs)
@other customers
my (very personal) opinion and experience
1. I decide to buy duplicate cleaner pro because it seems to be the only program which is able to search for duplicate folders and also
and to exclude folders from being compared against themself. Additionally the user-frinedly license policy (licensed per user, no hardware-footprint
activation procedure and a working support are arguments for me to support the work of the company although I alreaddy own other commercial duplicate-file-findingr software

2. I´ll mention 5 commercial duplicate finding pieces of software and give examples which features one may e.g. look at, when making a decision
- the software: 1. cuplicate cleaner pro, 2. dupehunter professional, 3. reasonable noclone enterprise, 4. keymetrics file detective, 5. pilotman clonetools
The software differs e.g. regarding
a) ability to find duplicate folders too (only duplicate cleaner and clonetools can do this (but clonetools has other disadvantages)
b) ability to exclude a folder from being searched within itself (only duplicate cleaner pro and noclone are capable of this)/setting a master directory
(not qute sure if there are any practical differences between duplicate cleaner and noclone regarding the master-directory function - perhaps another user
or developer may point this out
c) search algorithm - selectable hash algorithm and true byte by byte comparison (I think, keymetrics duplicate file detective does not allow true byte by byte comparison
until now)
d) Spped: pilotman clonetools is very very slow, the other programs differ slightly in speed regarding sha-comparison, but much more difference in speed when making byte by
byte comparison (noclone the fastest, duplicate cleaner faster than dupehunter, keymetrics not capable of byte to byte)
e) handling of results - the programs differ regarding smart marking / filtering the results, that may depend on personal needs, but all apart from pilotman clonetools
have various selecting feature
f) license: duölicate clenaer pro and noclone have a userfriendly license (licensed per user, no hardware footprint activation procedure),
keymetrics duplicate file detective is licensed per computer (not per user, not sure about dupephunter pro (but at least no hardware footprint),
clonetools has the most restrctive handling (hardwarefootrpint activation with max 5 activations possible)

Jun 6 2012 at 1:36am Copy Link
VLM NoClone is licensed per user and does not require activation. Also, NoClone does true byte-by-byte comparison, I believe.

Appreciate your comments on speed WRT NoClone vs. DCPro.

due to a pending cleaning of my disk drives, your product sounds VERY interesting. As I have dozens of backups with identical tree structures, searching for duplicate directories is my most wanted feature.
If I download the trial version, are all pro features accessible?
If not, what is blocked or left out?
Thanks for answering.

yabatopia How does it work on Windows 8? When can we expect official support for Windows 8? Will this be a free minor upgrade? Thanks!
Jan 23 2013 at 6:23am Copy Link
James Roberts Duplicate Cleaner runs fine on Windows 8. The only thing is that you may need to do is enable the .NET Framework 3.5 in the Windows Control Panel (See for details).

The upcoming version 3.1 makes the installer more Windows 8 friendly. Note this is a free update, and has lots of cool new stuff in it. Hopefully out next month, though sadly not in time for this promotion!

Bruce I have used the free version (1.47) from Digital Volcano and found it seemed to work well.

Though since the version I have been using is so far back in their history of releases maybe I need to try a more recent version to see how it is.

I was about to ask what is the difference between the free version and the Pro paid version, but found a list page on their website.
So for those who may be wondering as I was:

The main diffs, from what I see, are:
a. compare music by content (I think) though would like to know more how it does this, as would it find two songs similar if one is 128kbps and other of same song is 192 or 256kbps?
b. compare photos. The descriptive page says it will show potential hits side by side which would definitely be useful.
c. compare folders (so presumably shows if a whole folder with all its content is duplicated)

I wonder (Question to dev) if this would help in situations where I run a dup checker and when I find a large file duplicated, I end up displaying both folders in Windows Explorer, to see what else is there that might need pruning (but that was not immediately obvious in the dup checker list).

Thanks for any developer feedback. :)
Jan 25 2013 at 1:27am Copy Link
James Roberts Hi Bruce,
The compare audio by content option only finds identical audio data (ignoring the tags), so it would need to be the same bitrate, etc. For different bitrates, samplerates, and so on you would need to use the audio tag search.

Yes, you can use the image viewer to view the hits in the duplicate group side by side (see screenshot 5 from the link to the top left).

The duplicate folder finder is useful in the situation you mentioned. It is a separate browser in a different tab of duplicate cleaner (but working on the same scan), and presents an easy to read overview of duplicate folders listed in a tree layout. (See screenshot 6)

HJ B I understand that, with this program, I can target a particular drive to search for duplicates. Can I also search across drives that are connected to the computer? Can I include drives to which the computer has access over my LAN? I want to produce one report show all duplicates across all drives.
Jan 25 2013 at 8:00am Copy Link
James Roberts Pat - you can use Duplicate Cleaner on both of your own machines with one license
DigitalVolcano Software Ltd - Jan 25 2013 at 8:02am Copy Link
James Roberts Toni s - The CSV export/Import doesn't currently retain the duplicate folder list, just the files - something we hope to fix. From version 3.1 (currently in beta) the software will retain the scan result (files, folders, and your marks) between sessions automatically, so you can shut down and work on your list another day without worry.
DigitalVolcano Software Ltd - Jan 25 2013 at 8:06am Copy Link
James Roberts HJ B - Yes, you can search via a mapped drive letter or by using a UNC path (eg \\myshare\data\docs). Add the UNC path using the 'Enter Folder Name Manually' button.

Online manual here has details: http://www.duplicateclean...on_tab.htm

Brian W What I really want is a CONSOLIDATOR.

Ex. Over the years, I have created a "Finance" folder on many computers and made many backups. I would like to consolidate all of the files from all locations into one master with no dupes. Plus, if there are sub-folders with the same name, then put those together as well, even if at different directory levels. (Of course, let me review the folder mapping and manually adjust.)

I suggest adding two features:
1) Add folder keyword search to the "Scan Location" tab. Ex. I enter "Finance", and then in the left pane it will highlight my four "Finance" folders; I click the "Right Arrow" to add all 4 folders to the "Search Paths" List. This allows me to de-dupe all finance folders.

2) Add a "Merge" button. I can then merge all of the folders in the "Search Paths" List. (Selecting one path as the master.)
Jan 25 2013 at 12:39pm Copy Link
toni User if there an portable version available, planned , or can make Duplicate cleaner Pro portable? please help! thanks and thank you for your good support
can you make the help file multilinguage too?(german)
Jan 25 2013 at 1:04pm Copy Link
Brian W (Regarding my earlier post)
The freeware SearchMyFiles does allow a duplicate search for only files or folders matching criteria (ex. only search folders containing the word "finance"), but it does not have any auto-selection tools for tagging files in the search results (ex. tag all files in this folder). Therefore not very useful for me.

FYI: I have looked at many duplicate finders, with the free AntiTwin being my favorite.

For me, the agonizing part of dupe finders is the long list of files that it finds and the time it takes to select files to delete, so I have typicaly used AntiTwins's rule-based selection (DCP also has rule based selection).

I have always wanted a "Duplicate Folders" feature. I am happy to find it in Duplicate Cleaner Pro, but since it only finds folders that are 100% duplicate, I am unsure how much work it will save.

Suggestion: Report on "folders that contain 100% duplicates", then I will first eliminate those folders. (ex. If all for folder B is contained within folder A, then I should simply delete folder B. But if I work only with the duplicate file list I might mistakenly delete the dupes from folder A, leaving me with unique files in the two separate folders and later manually realizing that the folders should be consolidated.)

Suggestion: View results as a folder list with "% Duplicates", "Size of Duplicates", and "Number of Duplicates" columns. If one large folder is an 80% duplicate of another, then I should first limit my search to cleaning up and consolidating that folder first. Or, I will start with the folder that contains the largest MB of duplicates. Of course, enable tagging such as "tag all duplicates in this folder".
Jan 25 2013 at 1:28pm Copy Link
Emil Kucera Hello,
is there a way to tell the program to scan for files with no extension? I have a load of those text files all over the place and need to include them (BTW, I bought already :-) )
Jan 25 2013 at 2:07pm Copy Link
Brian W My conclusion: Worth buying because
1) The "duplicate folders" does help to recognize some large blocks of dupes.
2) comparing multiple specific folders will also help to target my searches. (ex. comparing 4 different "photo" folders).
Jan 25 2013 at 2:58pm Copy Link
VLM Does anyone have experience using both DCP and NoClone, also offered here on several occasions?

DigitalVolcano Software Ltd - Jan 26 2013 at 5:37am Copy Link

Brian W FATAL FLAW!! The software has no protections to prevent deleting all copies of a file!!

Ex. Right click a file; select "Mark All duplicates in this folder" and it actually marks all duplicates! Normal dupe software will mark All but one file in each duplicate group.

UGH! I wonder how many files that I lost?!

I will return to the free Anti-Twin.
Jan 30 2013 at 11:26am Copy Link
James Roberts 'Mark all duplicates in this folder' does what it says. If you want to delete all but one in each group you can use the selection assistant.
If you try and actually delete all files in a group it will pop p with a warning - so you shouldn't lose anything unless you click past the warning.
DigitalVolcano Software Ltd - Jan 30 2013 at 12:09pm Copy Link
Brian W What do you call a "duplicate"? If you have 3 files and two are the same, how many duplicates do you have? 1 or 2?

In my experience, other dupe programs would say 1 duplicate, therefore, yes, you delete ALL THE DUPLICATES but you do NOT delete ALL COPIES of the file!!

The FATAL FLAW is that there is NO WARNING when someone has selected ALL COPIES within a "duplicate group". Sure, sometimes, you might decide to delete all copies, but the normal use is to find and delete the "DUPLICATE FILES". i.e. the "EXTRA FILES".

In Anti-Twin, I am always selecting the files to delete by folder. If all copies are in the target folder, it is smart enough to leave one copy of every file.

Duplicate Cleaner Pro is far too dangerous for my use! I advise against it. The slight feature advantage is not worth the HUGE risk of losing all copies of a file!!
Jan 30 2013 at 12:43pm Copy Link
James Roberts There is a warning if you try and delete a group with all selected - so that removes the risk of accidental deletion.
Also registered users get a direct support email as well as the forum.

Wiggle Do we get lifetime updates? It says on "The Fine Print" that Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for minor versions only. Can we restore any accidentally deleted files too? It also should only remove one duplicate files out of two so we still have a copy on our PC and just remove the duplicate of the file. Is this possible?

James Roberts @Maz
-You get all updates to the 3.x line.
-You can restore anything if you delete it to the recycle bin, using Window's own mechanisms.
-Generally you choose which copy to delete -it will present you with both. It will warn you if you are trying to delete all copies of a file.

Top was posted 42 + minutes ago and the program is still frozen at 12.6% so it can not be scanning. It is still showing the (Not Responding) at the top as well

Geoff Jones I gave the trial a go and got an out of memory exception scanning a network drive. Do you know if this is a known problem? I have 12gb of ram.

James Roberts Geoff Jones: you might want to check out the 64 bit version.

Chris OK, now it has been well over a hour since I started the scan and it is still frozen at 12.6% with the (Not Responding) in the title bar at top.

It seems this only freezes up on my computer. If the Dev can help me I would be appreciative.

If no help I need to request a refund please.

Thank you...

Danny How much percent accuracy is in the search of duplicates?

Wiggle Thanks James. When i stopped the scanning process, it freezes around 7 minutes. I found more than 5000 duplicated files (images, files, etc) but i only want to delete zipped (.zip) files for now. How can i sort to see only .zip duplicated files?

Chris @ James Roberts

Yes it was still frozen at 12.6% 3+ hours later. I had already replied to your email and also joined your forum for help.
I found the 64bit version on your forum that you mention above to another customer. I had already downloaded it when I found it, so I decided to uninstall the 32bit and install the 64bit.
It was still registered after it was installed, which was a concern that it might not be.
I ran a full scan of my C drive and it started scanning. It took around 3 hours to scan and came back with like 1.57GB of duplicates. (it claimed)
I went through most of the stuff it showed, starting with the folders. I checked mostly folders from Google Chrome, my browser of choice. Then I moved to the files, which I picked very few of to remove. The program found similar files in different programs, so if any of them had been deleted I am sure the program that required them would of not worked next time I needed it.

Although it took a very long time to scan and most of whet it found were not the same things, I must give it a good review since it actually shows you the full path of each file or folder so you know what they belong to and can judge for yourself if it is safe to delete or not. Also, you can choose what you want done with the files and folders you delete. I had the program move them to my recycle bin so it would be very easy to restore them to where they were if something didn't work after they were deleted.

Also, I hope since I had to use the 64bit BETA version and not the 32 bit version offered here, that you will be able to in the near future move it out of beta and that it will still be a included update for me and other customers that couldn't use the 32bit version but were able to use the 64bit version.

James Roberts @Maz - Sorry for the late reply! You can Filter a certain file type by right-clicking on the file and selecting 'Filter by type (.zip)'

Petronius Arbiter II I would buy this if I could afford it, but sadly, I can't even chip in for the discounted deal. I use the free version frequently, and it's EXCELLENT, one of those freewares I wouldn't know how to live without.

Jester This is great software! I got version 3 from here and got the upgrade to version 4 earlier this year. I really like the duplicate folder functionality. As with all programs which delete files: Backup, Backup and Backup!

Bruno User BEST OF THE BEST - I know of no other contender in the "end user, non-corporate" price range (i.e. less than $200) which also lists "UNIQUES", and I use this functionality again and again, to identify files which are ONLY in some target drive or similar, and then I can move them, and discard the rest, for example. (Bought full price, is an absolute steal for $30, too.)

Jason Tried a few duplicate finder products, this one comes out on top. Typically performs reliably (have had a few minor issues) but in general, does well at discovering duplicates and assisting with removal. Works well over a NAS/network storage as well as local attached storage.

Christopher Hi, please confirm if the free upgrade to 5.0 will be provided, given that Digital Volcano Software advised on twitter on 8 APR and 8 AUG that: "If you buy now you'll get a free upgrade to 5 when it is released."

Rob Tried this and bought it. I'm very impressed. I knew I had a ton of duplicate junk but this has highlighted what a complete hoarder I am of 'just in case' waste of space files.

Nice that we'll get the upgrade too. Thanks BDJ and thanks James.

Pim User This software is one of my essential tools. Saving me so much time. It has so many smart filtering functions. It always works flawlessly; I fully trust it when deleting large amounts of data. It is indeed a steal for $30, bought a second license once to sponser the developer, just because I'm so happy with it. :)

Brian W Duplicate Cleaner Pro is the best duplicate remover that I have found and have used it for years. The main power is in the multitude of ways that duplicates can be marked. (Most programs make that a chore.) The duplicate folders and unique files are also great. I will buy now in order to get the free upgrade to 5.

(Might be the same price as the upgrade price but a second copy is nice to have.)

Mustang I purchased the v4 upgrade last year for $14.97, so can I assume the upgrade pricing for v5 will be the same?

James Roberts Mustang - You'll get a free upgrade for v5 if you buy now.
