What are people saying about Duplicate File Detective 6.0

Jeff Watson Ugh, I just paid full price for this product two weeks ago. Man, I thought this only happened to me at retail shops!

On the bright side, this is an awesome product. I tried lots of "duplicate file finders" before I decided to buy this one. It's got a very professional look and feel, and does its job well.

Wish I would have waited and saved 45% though.

Patrick Jackson Best software I've found so far for managing duplicate files. It "feels" very professional, for lack of a better word.

I think this software is probably aimed at experienced computer users, though, as it doesn't hand-hold everything like some other duplicate file apps. But it's still intuitive, and very flexible. I love how you can export duplicate search results in XML and re-import them later. Slick.

I would rate this app a 9 out of 10, and a very good deal at (nearly) half price.

Stefan Hauber Meanwhile I am having several loose harddisks, which I either do switch into the system before booting it or use a usb-case to connect with my system. Unfortunately I can not connect ALL at the same time.

So, can your software find also duplicates on two harddisks, which are NOT at the very same time connected to the system. (Of course this could only be done, if the result of a harddisk is stored persistently, e.g. first run: abc.txt is found on Harddisk 17 (it's name/size/date/hash-value is saved somewhere); second run abc.txt is found on Harddisk 28 with the same state (perhaps except the date) = Duplicate file found ).

(Just an example. I don't own that many harddisks ;-) )

Thank you,

Mark Richards Hi Stefan,

Duplicate File Detective currently doesn't support the type of incremental duplicate file search process you describe. It is possible to export the results of duplicate searches and restore them at a later point, but those results can't be incrementally updated or merged.

It's an interesting idea, though, and we'll certainly research & consider it for a future release.

Thanks for your feedback.

Frank Stephens Stefan, something which won't really help with finding duplicates but may help you to prevent duplicating files across external disks in the first place, would be to assign unique drive letters to each external drive, and index them with Windows Search 4. The files, their locations, and their Properties will show up in search results, even if the drives aren't connected.

Software Guy Some questions on the details - what is your upgrade policy?
What are the license terms - can a single user install on his desktop, laptop and netbook?
Can this software run from a USB drive? (The advantage here is obvious - 1 program, the user inserts only when he wants to clean his machine.) THANKS!

Key Metric Software Hi Software Guy,

Our upgrade policy provides free access to minor version releases, with major version upgrades available at a significant discount.

The license terms are spelled out fully during product installation, with each single-user license supporting one user / computer combination.

Currently, Duplicate File Detective cannot be run from a removable storage device. We are, however, looking into this for a future release.

Jon Koerner I recently did a pretty thorough search and eval of the currently available duplicate file finder programs, and it did appear that Duplicate File Detective (DFD) is the most fully featured one at present. (another top contender is Atory Dupe Checker Pro). While DFD did not have one particular capability that I needed (e.g., find files on drive Y: that are dupes of files on X:, then *easily* select ONLY the dupes on Y: for deletion, moving or etc.), the developer *was* receptive to such user suggestions/feedback (and something like that desired feature may be in an upcoming v.3.5).

Jim M One user/one computer limitation? That is pretty bad. Probably the most restrictive license I've seen recently. I won't purchase with that kind of restriction.

Richard A. I'm working with different types of projects that creates a lot of duplicate files, so a good program that can find and remove duplicate files has been an important part of my work for years. Some years ago I found a program called Dulicate Files Manager (DFM), made by a small Chinese company. This program is almost perfect - very fast, has a good interface, and with all the right features. Unfortunately the company suddenly disappeared into thin air shortly after, leaving the program behind with a couple of minor, but annoying bugs which I discovered too late for having them fixed, and which made some of the features unusable in certain cases.

So I started to look for a similar program which was still in development, so I could be sure that any bugs would be fixed. But no luck - whatever program I've tried, nothing could compare with DFM. They were either too slow, poorly designed, lacking in features, or (in most cases) a combination of all these things. So I've been sticking to my old DFM for some year snow, for despite the bugs it was still much better and faster than all the other programs on the market.

So when I downloaded Duplicate File Detective today, I was sceptical, and didn't expect too much. But I must say, I got a surprise. This program is awesome! Finally something that can match or even beat DFM, in all respects, even speed (it's actually a bit faster than DFM, according to a comparative test I've just made). The interface is also very easy and intuitive to use, and the whole programs feels very professionally designed.

So if you're looking for a program of this kind, look no more. I don't think anyone can make it better than this. 10 out of 10 from here...

Thanks!

I ordered a copy, but the license says it can only be used on one computer so I tried to order another copy for my other computer, but the order form keeps saying "Incorrect value" for the Coupon Code. Can you only order one copy, or do you have to order the copies you want in one purchase?

Key Metric Software Hi folks,

Thanks for all the feedback - greatly appreciated.

With regard to the upcoming v3.5 release, it will be considered a minor version upgrade (the major version number will not change) and will therefore be available at for free to v3.0 license holders. We also have several other minor (and free) v3.x releases scheduled.

With regard to licensing, Duplicate File Detective v3 is a business-class offering with a great many features, deep scalability and efficiency, and an aggressive future development schedule. Yes, the licensing is more expensive and restrictive than some other products (some of which vanish at random, as a previous user stated). But they are designed to ensure our customers continued access to the best product we can offer. If these terms aren't right for your needs, then we certainly understand that there are cheaper options available.

Thanks again for your time and consideration.

Bob S Question re: detecting previous (and now outdated) versions of a file.

I tend to save versions of files w/ a date prefix - e..g, filename_20100112a - so that I can go back to a previous ver in case the file I'm working w/ gets corrupted (or I delete something inadvertently). Some file versions are quite similar to earlier versions , while others that I work with over time change significantly.

I've also been known to save the same file to different folders, where I may subsequently edit and change the file from the original.

I'm assuming File Detective finds "exact" matches - can you confirm how it does this? Does it compares the contents of two files before concluding they are identical? I would feel safe deleting an exact copy if this is the case.

How about "near matches?" Can FD help identify previous versions that are near matches that could (possibly) be deleted or stored in a ZIP file?

Thank you.

S B Duplicate File Detective probably owns its category (at least I haven't seen anything that comes close).

I've used the wonderful LookDisk for years, but I have been watching DFD and it's now time to change. DFD has been powerful and professional since I first came across it, and it has really evolved in the years since.

DFD 's user interface is very modern and convenient, and various work settings can be packaged into "projects." You can control almost everything.

DFD seems to have all of the usual advanced search functions, and then some (name, filetype, content, directories, dates, sizes, exclusions, regular expressions, etc.) as well as direct support for managing the duplicates found (grouping, dates, sizes, most-recent, choosing, marking, tagging, removing, zipping, etc., etc.) all in a well-thought-out insightful and helpful way, and with intelligently chosen defaults.

DFD is surprisingly fast, and does take advantage of multiple cores. For us information-freaks, it can continuously display lots of descriptive data about what's going on and what it has found.

You can enable logging. It has lots of cross-referenced help--including *useful* pop-up help for things you may have missed.

This is very evolved, insightful, and powerful software, and Key Metric has now built in the technology to add new generations of even more powerful functions in future versions.

This is a special opportunity: version 4 has just been released (last month, with lots of powerful additions: native x64 support, taking advantage of media file tags, caching its hash functions--all of which can open major doors to more power) and it's half price.

It's already helping. Thanks Key Metric & BDJ. Count me in.

Key Metric Software Hi S B,

Thank you for the kind words. :-)

We've been very fortunate. Duplicate File Detective has been under active development since 2004 (the first release was in early 2005) and is used "in the field" (e.g. the real world) by many thousands of customers - a good percentage of them business users that *rely* on it.

These users are the backbone of Duplicate File Detective - and they've helped us to move the product in a direction that is geared toward the professional/power user. We're very lucky to have their feedback and ideas to help guide us.

And there's still work left to do. Version 4.0 is just out the door and we're already gearing up to work on 4.1 (a free upgrade to all v4.0 license holders). Ultimately, we don't offer Duplicate File Detective on Bits du Jour for the money (we barely break even when we sell through this channel) - we do it to get more users... more feedback... even more criticism. Because that's what will help us evolve Duplicate File Detective into the future.

Tazzie @ S B ... thanks so much for the indepth review. As it happens, I have been trying to plan consolidation and organization of my folders and files, and this is coming just in the nick of time for me to give it a real work out.

@ Mark Richards ... a good software developer/enduser relationship is a two-way street ... if you've developed a good relationship with your consumers, there's a good chance it's because you demonstrated their confidence in you and encouraged their feedback and participation. This in turn encourages me, cos I like to know I can develop the same relationship with the developer of a program that may turn out to be one of my PC workhorses!

the following questions occured during testing duplicate file detective:
1. does duplicate file detective have any features the programe
dupehunter professional 9.5 does not have? The duplicate file
hunter has e.g. many opportunities to work with the result lists

2. is it possible to select all files of a specified drive or folder
(with potentially subfolders) for deleting duplicates automatically?
3. Is it possible to select all files of a specified drive or folder
(with potentially subfolders) for being portected from deleting
II didn't find these features reading the help manual, but
possibly I just didn't ecognize it because of a lack of time for
trying out)
4. may there be an option for searching for duplicate folders as well in a vuture version (like pilotman clonetools)?
That would be a really intersting feature and an additional arguent for buying duplicate file dtective
Thank you for answering
with kind regards

And Can It Compare All 10-12 HDD's ? There Is Over 8TB Of Data To Go Thru...

Frank K. Hi there,

just read your question and thought I might be able to offer a little user-to-user advice (hope that's okay?). :)

FolderSizes/Duplicate File Detective are okay, but I'm a big fan of TreeSize. The duplicate search is one of the features of the software and it's really powerful.

TreeSize uses SHA256 checksums (as well as the faster MD5) to find identical files by their content, not their name. The amount of data shouldn't be a problem either, scanning may just take some time.

Plus, TreeSize means way more software for much less money.

Sadly, no offer of TreeSize on BitsDuJour yet – but, who knows, maybe they'll make an appearance if enough people ask. ;)

Cheers
Frank

Key Metric Software Hi Frank,

Thanks for your feedback.

The level of duplicate file search functionality provided by TreeSize is really not directly comparable to that of Duplicate File Detective.

Duplicate File Detective is a product that is 100% dedicated to the task of finding and removing duplicate files. It provides a large array of file comparison options that include music file tags, content analysis through hashing (numerous algorithms) and byte-for-byte comparison, zip file analysis, and much more.

Duplicate File Detective provides detailed analysis of duplicate file distributions, including graphs and reports of duplicate file types, folder distribution, file properties, and media preview.

Duplicate File Detective also provides much more powerful processing capabilities. Duplicates can be marked for processing using our powerful SmartMark technology. Once marked, duplicates can be moved, zipped, or deleted - with options to create replacement links or shortcuts along the way.

Many other unique features exist in DFD, including post-search report filtering, export to multiple file formats, re-import of existing report data, advanced scan-time search filtering, autopruning, a hash calculator tool, and much more.

And with regard to FolderSizes, we feel that no product is better in terms of disk space analysis capabilities. We support many of the largest companies in the world with this product, and they couldn't be happier.

As always, we'd recommend that folks try these utilities themselves and then decide which they prefer.

Thanks again for your thoughts.

I had put in my interest for "coming soon" promotion just yesterday and had downloaded the trial yesterday but did not get a chance to evaluate until this evening and haven't done much evaluation. Is there any way that this deal could be extended for a few days or at least couple of days? - don't have enough time to evaluate, but so far looks pretty good! Thanks!

Matt Hello Key Metric,

I am trying your Demo version of DFD.

Many of the folder icons (within both 'New Project Wizard' and the main program) are showing up as Black Squares. These 'black square' icons are the Windows Desktop, Documents, Download, Music, Pictures, and Videos default icons along with some of my own custom folder icons. DVD drive icons are also showing as black squares.

In the duplicate results window, some of the file icons are showing as black squares as well.

I'm on a Windows 8.1 64-bit PC with Nvidia graphics. I can send you screenshots via email if needed.

Thank you.

lisba f If two files have the same name but different content, how this program works? (I installed it but don't see an option to do just that).

bob roos On the ribbon bar is an icon called Comparison Options. Look there to see the different kinds of comparisons.

Duplicate files cannot hide from DFD just by changing their names :)

D Rogers OK, I purchased the program. This is exceeding my expectations discovering how flexible you can be. You can even delete parts of search results to focus in on chunks of a search you might want to manage. Save the search and rerun it again and again, refining your files and folders.

Or, you can sort results by folder name, making it easy to see all duplicates in certain folders. This alone saves much time reviewing duplicates before deletions. Thanks for the software deal.

Anil Agrawal I purchased it too after evaluating it only for a few hours today! Hopefully, it pays off which in a way it already did during the evaluation ;-))

Mappi75 I only can repeat:

FolderSizes Professional 7 & Duplicate File Detective 5

are both a great programs!

Mark Richards answers emails fast.

Duplicate File Detective saved me a ton of GB's on HDD because of duplicate files. Very strong (up to) 512bit file hashing.

Key Metric Software Hi Jon, we do indeed offer PayPal as a payment choice. You should see it as an option in the "method of payment" drop down box during checkout. If not, please try another browser.

yabatopia I've also got Duplicate Cleaner Pro and I like the clean interface of it. Duplicate File Detective offers far more customization, filtering and search options. And it's faster. I liked the preview window but unfortunately it lacks support for designer oriented.psd, .ai or .eps files. That would be a killer feature. Is there a way to enable that, maybe some kind of SageThumbs integration would be awesome.

Danny @yabatopia,

'' Duplicate File Detective sacrifices far more customization, filtering and search options''

Maybe little ' too much ' (unnecessary) options?

yabatopia @Danny
The interface Duplicate File Detective is a bit overwhelming compared to the clean look of Duplicate Cleaner Pro. DCP is easy to use, DFD offers a lot of fine-tuning. I like them both. I just really, really wish one of them offered an integrated preview for .psd, .esp or .ai files.

I am looking forward to the sale and purchasing.

Key Metric Software > Can PayPal be used to purchase?

Sorry for the delayed response on this, it took some time to get a clear answer from our online payment processing partner. They're indicating that PayPal transactions are not supported when affiliates (such as BitsDuJour) are involved.

If you're interested in this deal but need to purchase with PayPal, please contact us directly at sales@duplicate-file-detective.com, and we'll work with you.

My apologies for any inconvenience.
