What are people saying about DVD-Ranger

SoftCollector Dear Developer,

1. What is the policy after the purchase? Is it a 12-month license, or until the next major version (when is it planned to come out?), or is it a life-time license?
2. Does this software have AnyDVD (decryption) functionality inside?
3. How would you compare it to similar ImToo and Slysoft products?

Kind Regards,
SC

Ingo Foerster 1.) It is a lifetime key. So you purchased one time and not again. It doesn't matter if major release or common release.
2.) No. DVD-Ranger can copy a DVD with LibDVDCss, a library from the VLC media player (Inside installer) . For encrypted Blu-ray you will need AnyDVD HD.
3.) Slysoft do not have a compareable software. AnyDVD HD is an decrypter. CloneDVD and CloneDVD mobile are complete outdated. The most important point: Quality. We do not fake conversion speed with low framerates or small video images, we always try to find the best quality.
Imtoo has no real software. It is a Handbrake clone and the are flooding the market with hundrets of the same software and another name, so called spin-offs.

SoftCollector Dear Ingo,

Thank you for your prompt reply.

1. I own several SlySoft products with lifetime update: AnyDVD HD, CloneDVD, CloneCD. From your answer I understand that AnyDVD will come handy with DVD-Ranger – please, confirm.
2. I also own the current version of ImTOO Video Converter Ultimate. I agree with you that is one of many products going around by different names. It is almost identical to the corresponding model by Xilisoft for example. Still, I bought it because it does what it says better than most.
3. I also own Nero Ultimate, and I am on their beta team.
4. I have tried and used Cyberlink PowerDirector extensively.
5. I thought the above list contained all the major players on the consumer market. Today I have come across your software.
6. On your site there are several different purchase options. Can you, please, clarify what is Lifetime / DVD Subscription and CinEx / Add-On to remove Cinavia, and how do they relate to the version offered here? In other words: is there a better version offered through your site than the one currently on sale here?

Kind Regards,
PTs

Ingo Foerster 1.) DVD-Ranger needs only AnyDVD HD for Blu-ray copy. On DVD DVD-Ranger works most time better without AnyDVD. This is because AnyDVD manipulates too much of teh DVD structure.
2.) I personal do not like companies like Imtoo and others who just put some glue on some componetns (open source ones) and then sell it as a top product. How can a software be better than others if they are using 100% the same encoder? We are using the also ffmpeg but we have our own motion estimation and other important modules. Also we have a native CUDA port. The only software that I know who was using CUDA in native port was Badaboom.
So fnaly, I think we can beat them with quality.
6.) Advanced: This is just a bundle with DVD-Ranger Lifetime and AnyDVD HD 1 Year, dedicated to beginners. Many people have allready purchased AnyDVD so this is just a bundle for people who start wit copy software.
Lifetime: This is our major license. In compare to others, like DVDFab, it will not cost 450 USD, it costs just 89.90 USD (same license they offer here with a great discount).
CinEx: This is our module to remove Cinavia protection out of the Audiotrack. In case of some technical problems, it is delayed.

Flo What happens when I uninstall DVD-Ranger, for example to move to a new PC. Will this deactivate the product and will the number of activations be adjusted in your system, so that I would be able to install and register the software on a different system?

Thanks!

Ingo Foerster Currently you have to contact the support to reset activations. But many thanks for your idea to decrease the activation count while uninstall. We will add this with next update,

SoftCollector 1. I have tested DVD-Ranger, ripping a DVD into an HD format with hard-burnt subtitles and a PSP profile with hard-burnt subtitles. Converting took 2+ hours and 1+ hour respectively. The result was as advertised.
2. I feel that the UI could take some tweaking (although it is quite simple and straight forward even now):
2.1. Is there a way to set the target directory for the encoded file? What if I do not want it to be on C: ?
2.2. When selecting a temp directory: please, allow directory creation from the dialogue window (not just selection).
2.3. It would be nice to include simple editing functions, so that customers could cut and transcode a part of a movie (ImTOO and Nero have it).
2.4. It would be nice to be able to choose a different color for the subtitles to be burnt in.
2.5. Have you thought of including the option of several passes? ImTOO has it up to 2 times with mixed results, but CloneDVD Mobile has up to three passes and quality is great.
3. When is the video evaluation taking place? CloneDVD does that on request and the analysis can be viewed by the customer.

Kind Regards,
PTs

Ingo Foerster 1.) Thanks :-)

2.) The UI is always in progress. We try to optimize it with each update with user wishes / hints.

2.1) If you encode a video, you can select the directory with the "..." button right hand of the target textbox. You can see the selected directory/file in the status bar.

2.2) THanks for the hint, we will add this.

2.3.) Is in development.

2.4,) Added to wishlist

2.5) We do not see any sense of this option. DVD-Ranger works internal with multipass Means it read in content and analyze it, estimate calculations and finaly encode it.
2,3,4,5,x passes are old school things, from the time where a video have to fit onto a CD. We are living now in the GB/TB storage world, so it is better to increase the bitrate. We have tested this very much and checked the results with common quality tools. And the result is amazing. (http://www.dvd2hd.com/201...omparsion/)
I know this is an issue many people have a different view. But we have played much with it and do not see any sense.
(Did you ever think about 2/3 Pass on GPU? How to handle this, when the encoding is done frame by frame?).

3.) With DVD copy, DVD-Ranger do a prescan, this is needed in case of the mad structure protections. For video converting/encoding, see answer 2.5.

Ingo Foerster Since around a few years, the entertainment industry did not fight to any DVD copy software anymore, because they lost the most important trial about DeCss. On Blu-ray we do not do any decryption. So noone can claim.
We worked now for 10+ years in copy industry, started with DaVideo (europe/Japan), ShrinkTo5 (OpenSource), DVDneXtCOPY and now DVD-Ranger. Some of the major companies use our technology in their own products.
I hope this answer you question ;)

SoftCollector 1. Thank you, Ingo. Indeed, it does. :)
2. One last thing that I have just remembered – please, consider moving all PlayStation profiles under a single tab. Currently, you have PS3 profiles under a dedicated tab, and PSP profiles under the Mobiles tab, so it is a little confusing. Maybe you could have a tab called PlayStation or Game Consoles and put all the different profiles under it.
3. Are there plans to add a Samsung Note II profile to the Mobiles tab? The new device has a different screen ratio from the older Note (not sure if that should require a new profile).

Kind Regards,
PTs

SoftCollector What is unique about DVD-Ranger is that it combines in one what other vendors sell separately. For example, to get the video re-coding and DVD ripping functionality, you will have to buy two products from ImTOO – Video Converter Ultimate and DVD Ripper Ultimate, each of which costs $59.95 (no lifetime upgrade option). Or you will need to get CloneDVD and CloneDVD mobile from SlySoft, which will cost you 74.80 EUR.

DVDFab also sells a multitude of products, and you will have to keep buying, with your purse growing thinner.

I bought a license for DVD-Ranger and will keep testing it, and keep you posted.
