Jon Spain Surely Home should be free (not $14.50)? The migration is very narrow.

Jul 14 2014 at 12:30am Copy Link
Anthony User Jon, read the whole line.
Jul 14 2014 at 1:34am Copy Link
Jon Spain Anthony Stewart has posted “Jon, read the whole line.” but I can't see it here (it was emailed to me as a new comment). Looking again at the what the page shows, it is Backup Home, a separate product, which costs $14.50 so I apologise for missing that. However, the migration is still narrow.

Jul 14 2014 at 1:41am Copy Link
mactricks Wow, don't have to re-install programs? Cool.
Jul 14 2014 at 1:50am Copy Link
Kat Kat Two only applications for transfer free? Not a nice deal!
Jul 14 2014 at 2:04am Copy Link
mactricks This deal is for the pro version - unlimited programs.
Remember to click the up arrow in the top right corner and enter the rego code you receive in the email from Bits.

Jon Spain According to the website (URL below), one can only migrate from Windows 8 to Windows 8/8.1 on the Pro version, which is limiting (many people still on XP).

mahdi ameri Hello is very very good Thanks
Jul 14 2014 at 2:53am Copy Link
User1 Thank you for this software.
Question: Must this free offer be installed today only?
Or can it be installed anytime in the next 24 months?
Thanks again.
Jul 14 2014 at 4:11am Copy Link
F.J. Garvin Jon;

Define narrow.
Jul 14 2014 at 4:24am Copy Link
Carmen I Holy cow, this looks great, and what a timely deal-- I know so many people in this situation (including me!). It's not simply an XP -> migration tool, it handles quite a number of other OS migrations (read the "Supported Operating Systems" section thoroughly, you'll see many OSes listed there).

I can't wait to try it out.
Jul 14 2014 at 4:28am Copy Link
Jon Spain FJ Garvin As I wrote earlier, one can only migrate from Windows 8 to Windows 8/8.1 on Pro version, which is severely limiting with many people still on XP.

Jul 14 2014 at 4:30am Copy Link
User1 It appears that Jon is concerned that application transfers can only be made from Transfer from 32-bit to 64-bit OSs (or between equals), and from older to newer Windows OSs (not newer to older), or between the same OS.

From the web site:
Transfer from 32-bit to 64-bit
Migrate from Windows 8.1 to Windows 8.1
Migrate from Windows 8 to Windows 8/8.1
Migrate from Windows 7 to Windows 7/8/8.1
Migrate from Windows XP to Windows XP/Vista/7/8/8.1
Migrate from Windows Vista to Windows Vista/7/8 /8.1
Jul 14 2014 at 4:33am Copy Link
Jon Spain @User1 Thanks but, on the page I quoted above (repeated below), those options are not visible at al. At which page are you looking, please? If you're looking at the same page, maybe I'm misinterpreting what is meant because the blue dot is aligned with "Migrate from Windows 8 to Windows 8/8.1" alone. If all of them are included, that is wonderful - but are they?

Jul 14 2014 at 4:44am Copy Link
Kat Kat jon, the blue dot concerns all the mentioned systems. They did not put a blue dot for each system migration, but one blue dot for all.
Jul 14 2014 at 4:50am Copy Link
User1 You're welcome, Jon.
The product site is

The left col lists "Supported Operating Systems", and it includes "Migrate from Windows XP to Windows XP/Vista/7/8/8.1".

You can't go backward, or from 64 bit to 32 bit because of the difference in registry data structures.
Jul 14 2014 at 4:52am Copy Link
Jon Spain @Kat Kat Thank you for that, I clearly misunderstood what I read. This is great!

Jul 14 2014 at 4:53am Copy Link
User1 The main limitation that concerns me is how long I have to install it. My new computer won't be ready for a couple of weeks. If the software must be installed today it doesn't help.

Jul 14 2014 at 6:32am Copy Link
SFuji Please clarify, it appears I need two computers, old and new where I want to transfer the applications. I want to clone my HD, install a clean operating system (current one is infested with ransomware, adware, can't get rid of conduit, etc.) and transfer my applications onto the clean operating system. Sounds like this program will not do what I want. Is this correct?
Jul 14 2014 at 6:51am Copy Link
Luc T. Mrangaye As no limitation or deadline is stated for installation, I guess the application could be installed any time as needed! Many people asked questions regarding this aspect but no answer so far!
A big thanks to the developers for such a useful free offer! Stay blessed!
Jul 14 2014 at 6:53am Copy Link
Kyle user My question follows on from @eng hui - does it also transfer the application license and activation data/info? To clarify - will any apps that I transfer be activated and ready to go or do I need to reactivate/re-register them?

If the apps are indeed fully transferred, activated and ready to go, this is a great app and a great offer not to be missed.

Look forward to your response.
Jul 14 2014 at 8:24am Copy Link

Mister Trash Is there a way to copy just some subfolders? I don't want/need to copy the whol "My Documents" or "Program Files" but just some subfolders, but can't seem to do that. Is it possible?

Jul 14 2014 at 10:35am Copy Link
User1 @ Mister Trash
The web site says,

"Transfer only the applications (including their settings, bookmarks, etc.) you select to your new PC."

"Transfer only the data (including files, folders, music, pictures, documents, etc.) you select to your new PC."
Jul 14 2014 at 10:49am Copy Link
g hudak Is this SW portabale until I get my laptop back from shop?
Jul 14 2014 at 11:19am Copy Link
Mister Trash @User1 YEah sure... ""Transfer only the data (including files, folders, music, pictures, documents, etc.) you select to your new PC.""
I know that. But my question that you didn't answer was, can I somehow just chose some subfolders instead of the just the root folder.
Lets say I have a foldersysytem where the root is call "Music" and in there I have the folder "Rock", and finally in the that one I have a folder named "Queen".
Now I don't want to copy all of the music....I don't want copy all the Rock music...but instead, copy the music from Queen. Can this be done?
Jul 14 2014 at 2:26pm Copy Link
User1 @ MTrash Hey man I'm just a customer just like you, not the publisher. I'm assuming that you can select each individual file you want with a file selector box. It says ... (including files, folders, ... so that looks good.
Give it a try today. It's free.

PS. It probably doesn't work with Queen.
Jul 14 2014 at 2:52pm Copy Link
Mister Trash @User1, I did get it and installed it but can't find this option, that is why I am asking, hoping someone who knows the program can help out.

Adrian Miller After 30 years of IT experience i would never use a "transfer" program, ever.

Either do a HDD to HDD copy or Disk Image and Restore. Or at worst, rienstall the programs on the new PC and copy the saved data files.Like a sane person, not a lazy one. Never try a shortcut.

Every "Transfer" program either sprays files (often tons of unrelated ones, often not all the files the program requires outside of program files folders etc) and registry entries everywhere. Leaves your new PC a complete mess.
Dec 17 2014 at 1:23am Copy Link
David Lawrie For a feature list see

(Adrian: I've used Laplink PCMover several times successfully, for a PC on which far more programs than most would have were installed- very successful. I've not tried this, but their Todo Workstation imaging tool and partition manager are good, so hope to try this in due course)
Dec 17 2014 at 1:48am Copy Link
neme doe Two potential issues concern me:
1. Most installations require registry entries placed during install. Can this do that?
2. Since it must be installed on TWO machines---the source and the destination---will one license suffice, or does this mean you have to buy one since only one is free?
Dec 17 2014 at 10:00am Copy Link
David Lawrie Hi, first, whilst I've not used this program, I can speak from having used 3 program transfer programs. Yes, these move every aspect of an installed program including the registry entries. Else a claim to move programs from one OS to another would be meaningless.

Secondly, it's a single purchase. You can see that from the link I've given above.
Dec 17 2014 at 10:52am Copy Link
neme doe Thank you David for the info about the registry! I honestly was concerned only because it seemed odd that software vendors would allow someone who bought a one-PC license to use transfer software like this to 'install' on a second computer. I'm sure of course that subscription software like MS Office 365 won't activate, but hard-installed software will?

I see from the link you provided that it says again to install on both computers, so I'm guessing that means, as you suggest, that this one license will suffice for both computers. Thanks, I appreciate your response!
Dec 17 2014 at 12:16pm Copy Link
David Lawrie This kind of program isn't deliberately intended to allow you to cheat; experience with others shows that sometimes licenses are transferred with the program, sometimes not.

There's no absolute rule as to how or where a program should retain the fact that it's licensed- there are different means. Witness programs that try to list licenses for programs on your PC- the results are very much a subset. So it is difficult to ensure it would NEVER transfer data a program see as making it 'licensed'. That could require an extensive and ever-changing database of programs- which would be improbable.

A few programs are even machine dependent, so moving them to different hardware would invalidate the license. Others require activation or verification with a server.

So it would be quite possible that in some cases you could have a licensed copy on source and target machines if, despite the program trying to avoid copying, say, the typical registry entries used, it did happen to copy the data used by the program to record its license state.
Dec 17 2014 at 12:38pm Copy Link
Adrian Miller In response to David above:

So you can categorically garauntee that every registry key required for every program "transferred" will be migrated

Does this include keys outside the programs own location in the SOFTWARE hive, like Classes, SYSTEM and other locations (such as crypto licensing locations) that the program may rely upon?

I think not.....if im wrong, post a garauntee of this....
Dec 18 2014 at 1:54am Copy Link
David Lawrie Adrian, I'm just a user; I guarantee nothing. In my experience, where I've used Laplink PC Mover, PickmeApp, SoftRescue (the company seems to have died, so doesn't work now); the hundreds of programs I've transferred on several occasions have almost all worked. Certainly some larger programs are best reinstalled, not transferred; I noted some errors here, easily sorted out.

A huge time saver.
