Jon Spain Surely Home should be free (not $14.50)? The migration is very narrow.

Jon Spain Anthony Stewart has posted “Jon, read the whole line.” but I can't see it here (it was emailed to me as a new comment). Looking again at the what the page shows, it is Backup Home, a separate product, which costs $14.50 so I apologise for missing that. However, the migration is still narrow.

Carmen I Holy cow, this looks great, and what a timely deal-- I know so many people in this situation (including me!). It's not simply an XP -> migration tool, it handles quite a number of other OS migrations (read the "Supported Operating Systems" section thoroughly, you'll see many OSes listed there).

I can't wait to try it out.

User1 It appears that Jon is concerned that application transfers can only be made from Transfer from 32-bit to 64-bit OSs (or between equals), and from older to newer Windows OSs (not newer to older), or between the same OS.

From the web site:
Transfer from 32-bit to 64-bit

Migrate from Windows 8.1 to Windows 8.1
Migrate from Windows 8 to Windows 8/8.1
Migrate from Windows 7 to Windows 7/8/8.1

Jon Spain @User1 Thanks but, on the page I quoted above (repeated below), those options are not visible at al. At which page are you looking, please? If you're looking at the same page, maybe I'm misinterpreting what is meant because the blue dot is aligned with "Migrate from Windows 8 to Windows 8/8.1" alone. If all of them are included, that is wonderful - but are they?

User1 You're welcome, Jon.
The product site is http://www.easeus.com/fre...-software/

The left col lists "Supported Operating Systems", and it includes "Migrate from Windows XP to Windows XP/Vista/7/8/8.1".

You can't go backward, or from 64 bit to 32 bit because of the difference in registry data structures.

I want to clone my HD, install a clean operating system (current one is infested with ransomware, adware, can't get rid of conduit, etc.) and transfer my applications onto the clean operating system. Sounds like this program will not do what I want. Is this correct?

Kyle user My question follows on from @eng hui - does it also transfer the application license and activation data/info? To clarify - will any apps that I transfer be activated and ready to go or do I need to reactivate/re-register them?

Look forward to your response.

Mister Trash @User1 YEah sure... ""Transfer only the data (including files, folders, music, pictures, documents, etc.) you select to your new PC.""
I know that. But my question that you didn't answer was, can I somehow just chose some subfolders instead of the just the root folder.
Lets say I have a foldersysytem where the root is call "Music" and in there I have the folder "Rock", and finally in the that one I have a folder named "Queen".
Now I don't want to copy all of the music....I don't want copy all the Rock music...but instead, copy the music from Queen. Can this be done?

Adrian Miller After 30 years of IT experience i would never use a "transfer" program, ever.

Either do a HDD to HDD copy or Disk Image and Restore. Or at worst, rienstall the programs on the new PC and copy the saved data files.Like a sane person, not a lazy one. Never try a shortcut.

Every "Transfer" program either sprays files (often tons of unrelated ones, often not all the files the program requires outside of program files folders etc) and registry entries everywhere. Leaves your new PC a complete mess.

neme doe Two potential issues concern me:
1. Most installations require registry entries placed during install. Can this do that?
2. Since it must be installed on TWO machines---the source and the destination---will one license suffice, or does this mean you have to buy one since only one is free?
Dec 17 2014 at 10:00am Copy Link
0
David Lawrie Hi, first, whilst I've not used this program, I can speak from having used 3 program transfer programs. Yes, these move every aspect of an installed program including the registry entries. Else a claim to move programs from one OS to another would be meaningless.

Secondly, it's a single purchase. You can see that from the link I've given above.
Dec 17 2014 at 10:52am Copy Link

neme doe Thank you David for the info about the registry! I honestly was concerned only because it seemed odd that software vendors would allow someone who bought a one-PC license to use transfer software like this to 'install' on a second computer. I'm sure of course that subscription software like MS Office 365 won't activate, but hard-installed software will?

I see from the link you provided that it says again to install on both computers, so I'm guessing that means, as you suggest, that this one license will suffice for both computers. Thanks, I appreciate your response!
Dec 17 2014 at 12:16pm Copy Link

David Lawrie This kind of program isn't deliberately intended to allow you to cheat; experience with others shows that sometimes licenses are transferred with the program, sometimes not.

There's no absolute rule as to how or where a program should retain the fact that it's licensed- there are different means. Witness programs that try to list licenses for programs on your PC- the results are very much a subset. So it is difficult to ensure it would NEVER transfer data a program see as making it 'licensed'. That could require an extensive and ever-changing database of programs- which would be improbable.

A few programs are even machine dependent, so moving them to different hardware would invalidate the license. Others require activation or verification with a server.

So it would be quite possible that in some cases you could have a licensed copy on source and target machines if, despite the program trying to avoid copying, say, the typical registry entries used, it did happen to copy the data used by the program to record its license state.

Adrian Miller In response to David above:

So you can categorically garauntee that every registry key required for every program "transferred" will be migrated

Does this include keys outside the programs own location in the SOFTWARE hive, like Classes, SYSTEM and other locations (such as crypto licensing locations) that the program may rely upon?

I think not.....if im wrong, post a garauntee of this....

David Lawrie Adrian, I'm just a user; I guarantee nothing. In my experience, where I've used Laplink PC Mover, PickmeApp, SoftRescue (the company seems to have died, so doesn't work now); the hundreds of programs I've transferred on several occasions have almost all worked. Certainly some larger programs are best reinstalled, not transferred; I noted some errors here, easily sorted out.

A huge time saver.

neme doe Once again, my question is: if it IS downloaded before the expiration, but not installed until later, will it work? If not, the offer is kind of moot for most people, since the odds of having two computers ready for transfer right at the moment are pretty slim.
