What are people saying about Easy Disk Catalog Maker

Roger Abbett Hi,
I have been trialling this software since it was listed and like it, so I am considering buying.
Can I just ask please is there a way to update a disc? E.g. if I add my C Drive or even My Documents to the catalog as disc, how do I update the catalog when the content of the drive changes? I can't find a way to rescan, only to add a new disc.
Many thanks.
Roger

Ravi Patel You can update disk using scan new disk option. Just make sure Check Duplicates is checked in Options. You can open options using View->Options menu. When it finds the same disk it will ask you to update disk. Just start scanning disk again and it will present you with update disk dialog.

Chris I purchased this because of the "Lifetime" Uodates, but I have a question. Why does the site say the following?

Get Full Version for only $11.97

If $11.97 is the normal price then we aren't getting any discount.

umike The search feature is very useful.

Is there a way to customize the columns in printout for the search result?
For me, 50% of the columns in printed table is empty.
Jul 21 2013 at 3:05am Copy Link

Ravi Patel You can customize columns easily just right click on the column name in the list and uncheck columns you don't want then hit Print.

Ed Stetser I have about 1,000 discs. Some CDs, DVDs, data discs, movies, etc.

How will I scan the discs into the program? Will I need to purchase a scanner?

Thank you
Jul 21 2013 at 7:35am Copy Link

Scott Van Leeuwen You would put the media into a Cd\DVD\Blu Ray drive and scan the disc for files. Am I correct.

Next question. What do I do with the discs I have scanned. Do I number them and put them away or what? What do I do with them when they have been scanned?
Jul 21 2013 at 7:57am Copy Link

Ravi Patel You can scan disk using Scan disk button represented as Plus button. There is also Scan Repeatedly option if you want to scan many discs at once. Just click on the drop down arrow of Scan Disk button and you will see Scan Repeatedly, click on it and select the drive you want to scan. Now when you insert the new disk in the drive app automatically scans it, eject the disk and gives you unique id of the disk, note that down on the disk. Now when you search for file using search functionality app will give you the unique id of the disk where that file resides. You can also assign location to disks so you can find them easily. for example 1-100 disks in box1, 101-200 disks in box2. Search functionality also reports about location and category.

Ed Stetser Am I missing something - I have 1000+ discs - will I need to insert each disc into the Optical drive and wait for each to scan - guesstimate of 100+ hours of time to get the job done? Ug.

Thanks

Ravi Patel Yes, you have to insert each disc into the Optical drive and wait for each to scan. Sure, it's take time but think of the time saved by this application when you want to find some file urgently.

_*_ Hello, I have never used a program like this before and am a bit lost on how to go about adding my software into the program.

I looked in the help file and on the website but did not readily locate an answer.

How would I for example, add the download/install of Easy Disk Catalog Maker that I am trying out into the software? Is it only for physical disks?

Maybe I just do not fully understand to process or thinking behind this software.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Jan 25 2014 at 7:47am Copy Link
0
Ravi Patel We designed this software to keep track of physical disks. For example - If i have like 50 disks of my software collection and i want to find one specific software 1MB in size from my collection i need to insert every disk into my drive and look for it but if you cataloged those disks using Easy Disk Catalog Maker than you don't have to do it. You just open the Easy disk Catalog Maker and search for the file you want to find.

Also This software can also catalogs external drives, flash drives and hard drives.

_*_ Ravi Patel, thank you very much. I have very few physical disks as I download most things at this stage. So, I simply burn the install files onto a disk to archive them.
Thanks again

RPP.SysAdmin.a I am thinking specifically of cataloging music CD's and Unicode in the titles of selections on the CD. but perhaps this software is for data CDs only?
Jan 26 2014 at 11:43am Copy Link

Ravi Patel You can catalog MP3 Disks using this software. This app supports MP3 IDv3 tags so when you catalog disks containing music mp3 files, it automatically gets the IDv3 tags like Album, Title and others. So you can catalog any type of disks with this.

Michael R. How does this software handle symbolic-links, i.e. directory-references from one location to another? Does it run through them, as if they were stored in the current disk (badest solution), does it skip them at all or does it store them as reference, perhaps together with the real destination (best solution, I suppose)?

I use them a lot - currently only between different partitions on the same harddisk, but perhaps later - if this is possible - between different discs. So scanning a disk and getting information about on which other disc a directory is located would be quite nice...

~~~~~~
Regarding the fineprint. Is it possible to transfer the license to another computer (e.g. if the current one is replaced by a new one)?
Jan 26 2014 at 9:26pm Copy Link
1
Ravi Patel Unfortunately in the case of directory reference it runs through them as if they were stored in current disk. Yeah you can transfer license to other PC if it gets faulty and as long as its owned by you.
Hawkeye A big plus for me is the reports.
A few suggestions.
1. It would be nice to search with wildcards. example, You can search with a period+bat,( bat) but a *.bat finds nothing, but with wildcards, it would find the files, test*.bat, would would list test01.bat and test02.bat.
2. On the search / Advance page, maybe a refresh button when adding a, to and from date, to update the data, already found.
3. On the reports page, if possible to save to a text file, with or without headers. HTML output, might be useful to some.
Do you have any plans for updates?
Thanks,
.
Michael R. @ Ravi Thanks for the quick answer.
Do you have plans to implement handling this?
I suppose it's not such a big effort to implement this in a coming update, is it?
Without it and a lot of (or disadvantageous) symbolic links on a harddisk your program would be quite unusable: E.g. if
'd:\dir' links to 'e:\' and
'e:\dir' links to 'd:\'
this would (if a scan of d:\ without further checks is done) probably result in an 'endless' scan (and finally an exception).
Thanks, Michael
Jan 26 2014 at 10:25pm Copy Link
1
Ravi Patel It is not a big effort but because this software mostly focus on removable drives like DVDs, Flash drives and external drives i think it's not suitable.
RBSoft - Jan 26 2014 at 10:44pm Copy Link
Michael R. Why shouldn't this not be something concerning external drives, especially external harddisks?
In fact I am just scanning a partition and although the progress-indicator is moving, there is no more change in the Scan-Results (still 'Counting...').
I suppose, you will get more user-feedback concerning this reason, the more symbolic links - which are quite useful! - are used. So implementing handling of these would probably spare you (and your users) some trouble...
Jan 26 2014 at 10:52pm Copy Link
Ravi Patel @Hawkeye
1. There is already wildcard feature. If you search for .bat instead of .bat you will find all the bat files inside catalog. Although it also finds other files containing .bat. You can easily solve that problem using filtering option by right clicking Type column header in the search list.
2. You are right that refresh button is good. But You can also filter dates by right clicking on column header in the search list. Also searching catalogs doesn't take much time. For my collection of 1500 disks it takes like 2-5 seconds for me to find some file.
3. i will try to implement the HTML output and let you know. But you can have html from csv using http://www.convertcsv.com...o-html.htm
Michael Good new for you. I never tried symbolic links before. I thought it would work same as shortcuts but when i tried creating symbolic link using mklink /j. Then i tried to do the catalog of the link and it catalogs the real destination! See for yourself using trial version. Thanks for the feedback.
HJ B The software also permits cataloging of a hard disk. It is important for me to be able have my catalog contain both my C drive and various media that contain backups and archives (CD, DVD, USB plug, memory chips, external hard drives).
My C drive is one terabyte, with 750gig of data. I attempted to catalog it with this software several times. Each time, the software turned off, and no catalog was saved, all within a few minutes. There was no hanging of the computer.
The demo version says it will catalog 25 disks. It does note say there is a limit on disk size. Can you tell me if there is a size limit on the paid program or if this problem is one that you have encountered.
Since there is a "no refund" policy, I hesitate to purchase the program if it cannot catalog a typical c drive.
Thankyou
_*_ I tried this software out last time it was here but did not think I needed it. I have since given it another go and now see the benefit of the software.
I purchased WinCatalog 2014 here and compared to Easy Disk Catalog Maker, Easy Disk is much faster at scanning disks as I can tell.
Speed wise, searching seems about the same.
After only a few minutes with the program I would like to suggest a couple things (maybe there is a way for what I ask).
1. When right-clicking on a drive and choosing Search, please have the cursor already active in the "Search for" box. It would be faster to choose, Search and begin typing without first having to click into the "Search for" box to activate the cursor so the user can type.
2. Have the program work with other programs such as XYplorer, etc.
I believe I will purchase when sale goes live because of the Lifetime Updates and the very similar functionality compared to WinCatalog 2014.
Jul 6 2014 at 4:13am Copy Link
Ravi Patel Thanks for your kind words. I will fix the search box activation issue in next version. Can you explain second feature you suggested about XYplorer?
RBSoft - Jul 6 2014 at 7:22am Copy Link
0
_*_ @Ravi Patel, regarding XYplorer. When you right-click on a folder you can choose "Show in Explorer". It would be nice to have it open a program such as XYplorer instead of Windows Explorer.
Others here use Directory Opus; I happen to use XYplorer as my file manager.
It would be nice to be able to direct Easy Disk Catalog Maker to open another program in place of Windows Explorer.
I hope that makes more sense on my part! :o)
Thanks
Louis H I'm not sure why I didn't pick this up during past offers, but it is VERY fast. Over the years I have amassed thousands of disks - CD - DVD - as well as USB drives of all sizes and shapes. I have amassed tens of thousands of photos, music files, textures, icons, gifs, clip art, loops, samples, as well as documents and Ebooks in multiple formats. In the past I have spent days looking for a specific file that I knew I had, but could not remember where I stored it. (When it comes to backup of files, I am indeed a "hoarder!")
Not to mention the thousands of archive files I have where I saved a mishmash of who knows what. Archives set up to free space from hard drives back when it was not so economical to simply pick up a new USB drive.
This program very quickly has revealed files I either forgot I even had, or thought were lost. Just within the past 30 minutes I have found some old scanned photos I had completely forgotten I had. Scans of photos I no longer have access to the originals of. And that was simply an old DVD I picked out - at random - to test the software with. Those photos alone are worth far more than $12.
I am actually excited, like a kid waiting for Christmas morning, about going back through all of those old disks and scanning them to find other lost treasures.
I know.... why did I ever let my collection get in such a state? I did. Disorganization. Story of my life!
Thanks to Ravi and BDJ for making this program available today with a great discount.
_*_ OK, ran it again and it displayed $12.00. Went ahead and purchased.
Thanks
I would encourage developers to work with payment sites to not require PayPal users to type in their personal information to then go to the PayPal site and complete the order.
It should work like it does at Good Old Games (gog.com).
As soon as you click on PayPal it removes all areas to type in information and simply states as soon as the "Process Order Now" button is pressed it will redirect you to PayPal page to complete the order.
This is the way it should be.
I haven't tried it on my SD cards as I usually back them up onto another hard drive.
Yes, You can change the name of the disk. Just right click on the disk from the list and click on rename.
No, If I provide that kind of feature user can change ID same as other disk and there is no way to identify the disk because there is no Unique ID.
Gonzo I'm really interested in this, but have a couple of questions:
1-Does the software have an option to calculate (and store in the DB) hashes for each file in a disk? If not, is it a feature planned for the near future?
2-Is there an option to easily export the DB to a standard? (ie. CSV, XLS, SQL, etc)
Thanks!
Ravi Patel @Gonzo
1- No, Easy Disk Catalog Maker doesn't calculate hashes for each file and store them in DB. Calculating hashes of the files and storing them into database takes lots of time. So I don't think I can add that feature in near future. Adding this feature means prolonging the scanning process.
2- You can't export entire database at once. But you can print CSV or PDF containing list of files and folders inside a disk, You can also print disks list and search results too. You can also customize which columns will be included in the CSV or PDF.
Gonzo Thanks for the quick reply.
Regarding hashes, how about making it an option?
That way the user can choose if he/she doesn't mind the long wait.
I consider it for future update.
I done some quick changes to the Easy Disk Catalog Maker and Now It can calculate CRC32 hash. You need to enable it in Options. This feature don't work with old DB so you need to create new one. Here is the setup file.
DH007 Does the program somehow remembers the volume id or harddisc usb serial for discs so it can just update the database? Or is there function Update content only? I have X discs that get updated and I would prefer the program simply tells me that tis disc is already in database and if i just want to update.
Ravi Patel @DH007
You can update the disk by scanning it again. When you scan the same disk again it will show you a dialog that shows that you are scanning it again and ask you to update the disk or add the disk as new one.
wts I can't find information about when an update is released and what has changed. I haven't found anything in the program or on your site. If I've missed it somewhere, please indicate where it is, otherwise that's a good thing to add. The only way I've found is to re-download and re-install. Thanks.
wts Found it! Thank you.
I have 2 suggestions:
(a) Add a link to the changelog page "http://rbsoft.org/downloa...alog-maker" somewhere on the product page "http://rbsoft.org/downloa...alog-maker" (and corresponding pages for your other products) or on a FAQ page or in the Forum.
(b) Add a "Check for updates" under "Help" or in the "About" that points to this page.
That will make the changelog easier to find. And don't worry if the most recent change is a while ago. A good product like EDCM doesn't necessarily need constant fiddling.
Thanks for the suggestions. I added change log for all the products in FAQ section. For point b, I am thinking about adding change log directly in About window in next version. Thanks for supporting development of Easy Disk Catalog Maker.
wts @Ravi
I checked out your addition to the FAQ section. Perfect.
I also have Right Click Enhancer Pro from a BDJ promotion. I like the way you implemented the Changelog as a tab in the Help | About. Just one suggestion there: re-order the versions with the most recent at the top the way you have it for the EDCM on your site, rather than sorted with the oldest at the top. Thanks.
