Dunking Does this need to be online to perform OCR? Can it be activated and work completely offline?

Thanks

iCarePDF Hello,

The OCR works offline, but the activation process requires an internet connection to complete. After activation, it can work without an internet connection

If you have anything we can help with, please feel free to contact us.

Best regards,

Dunking OK, thanks.
I am kind of ambivalent about this. You are not a well-known company and the chances are that you might give up or otherwise close shop. If online activation is needed then the life-time license is no use at all.

The offer is cheap, but price is not my primary concern. If the product is good and I get used to using it, should I then get a new PC or otherwise need to reactivate and you no longer exist, my workflow is disturbed and the effect can be out of all proportion to the price.

(A diversion, if I may: some years back we went to France and bought some cereal bowls for 1 Euro each. Dead cheap, so it doesn't matter if we break them. But over time we get used to them and really like them, and now we're afraid to use them because they might get damaged and they can't be replaced. Their value to us now is out of all proportion to their original cost. Software can be like that.)

fpi fpi Having a materialistic attitude in a consumerist world is complicated!
Being a compulsive buyer or taking false commercial propaganda at face value is also a problem.
Other examples of attractive programs are regularly offered. Research work allows you to avoid buying an abandonware. You always get your money's worth. Nobody gives gifts. Offering a lifetime license with free updates is never profitable. If the company is serious, it will offer an evolution of its program via a partial renaming. This will require a new investment. From a standard version, you will move to platinum deluxe or other. This is perfectly legal. Simply add one or more new features to the standard version which itself will no longer evolve or disappear.. The solution of offering an OEM version by creating a site for its distribution is also known. Unfortunately, the risk of buying software that is no longer sold or supported by its creator is real. It is always better to invest in the original version because the OEM only resells the version for which it has finalized a commercial agreement with the owner of the rights. In the end, the attractiveness of a price is what decides the buyer, and it is also the reason why he will accept having wasted his time and a little money.
The lack of a changelog is also always prohibitive. Just like a program still in its original version 1.0

styrobrain @fpi fpi: I have difficulties understanding what you mean by "It's an OEM product". I am familiar with the term OEM being used for hardware. But applied to software... Abbyy's OCR engine comes to mind... calling it 'the OEM OCR component in Tracker PDF-XChange' (some versions, anyway) seems plausible. But in this case? Can you please elaborate?

fpi fpi @styrobrain: An OEM (original equipment manufacturer) product can be purchased by an individual. The sale of an OEM product by its developer or manufacturer is aimed at a professional. A commercial contract sets the conditions. For example, Microsoft sells Windows to different computer manufacturers. There is then a unitary link between the license key (stored in the BIOS) and the activation of Windows for each computer. There is no authorization to transfer the license to another computer, and even with a broken motherboard (a new license is required, contractually speaking). With a non-OEM license key, therefore a version purchased from Microsoft or in a box from an official reseller, the authorization to transfer the license exists. Concerning the price difference between the two offers, this is explained by the fact that on one side we are talking about the sale of one license key, and on the other side we are talking about the impressive quantity of license keys. A commercial negotiation is always related to the amount purchased. With major account customers, it is not OEM licenses, because it would be necessary to generate a license key for each workstation. Therefore, it is an individualized license key that integrates the number of activations authorized during the commercial negotiation. In practice, a program or hardware can be sold in different forms. But only the purchase from the genuine manufacturer or developer will allow it to be updated and to obtain help. Using an OEM version of Windows on an HP computer (for example) does not authorize contact with the after-sales service at Microsoft. You must only contact HP. This seems restrictive, but it is logical. In reality, it is always a question of money and optimization relating to direct or indirect sales.
Concerning Easy Screenshot, I do not know who owns it. But this lack information raises questions and one possible answer is that it is an OEM product.

Brenda Adams Well, I don't. ("Get it.") Why all this jibber jabber? Gee. Much ado about nothing?? This entity is offering free trial or $7 purchase. IF you think this is a risky deal, say so in plain English please. If you think so, it's your opinion. Fine. But I'm not sure dragging us all into this long-lasting verbiage is any help to most of us. I think you should let it go, frankly. It's gibberdy-dash to most of us anyway. 7 bucks won't kill us. What's important to us, I suspect, is: is downloading this safe for our computers. My services reported 'yes.' I've installed it (the 'trial') and now my only problem is: how do I use it? I'm looking for simple instructions. Thank you Bits and iCare for this offer. :)

Dunking @Brenda - I tried this program and it does work. If you have no other capture application that does this then it is OK, and significantly it isn't fussy about the source of the image it is to convert. Some insist they will only use image files, and this will do that but also do a screencap (this is what I look for - often I need to capture some application output that isn't in a selectable and copyable form).

In the end I chose not to purchase. Not because it doesn't work but because I already have similar apps, and in a quick test (DVLC V5 form) it performed no better than those similar apps (that is, not very well - it's a great test!).

fpi fpi @Brenda: To popularize certain commercial aspects in a simple sentence is impossible. Informing on a subject X is always useful for a novice. The Pro will always be irritated to have wasted his time. It isn't easy to be a generalist! You are no exception to the rule and want a simple personalized answer so as not to have to do research and synthesis work. If you had the answer, I am not sure you would share it here. Concerning a program capable of capturing a screen window, I inform you that an option of the program "Wondershare PDF Element Pro" allows you to do this work correctly. With the command "Ctrl-Q" you can also take a scrolling screenshot. The OCR will enable you to extract the text. It is great because any pop-up can be captured in this way. But, impossible not to admit that if you manually re-enter the text, it is completely free. We invest or automate to save time, but according to a limited budget. What will be acceptable to you will not be acceptable to someone else. The more you study, the more you learn to proceed by elimination and decomposition. And sometimes it is a mistake that will lead to the right choice!
But to return to the understanding of certain commercial aspects. We can make a connection with the purchase of video media from old times. From a VHS film, with a definition of a few hundred pixels, we moved to the FHD then 4K. Watching an old film on a 4K television results in very distorting upscaling (pixelation). For a computer program developed under an old version of Microsoft Windows, the problem is the same. Because each version is associated with a hardware graphics resolution. Finally, is it reasonable to buy a program developed in 8 or 16 bits on a 64-bit computer? Can a discount of 50% or more hide suspicious commercial propaganda?
Hence the interest in consulting the changelog that only serious developers publish, its absence is always prohibitive. Even more, if the proposed version is still stamped "1.0" and it is announced as compatible with XP, Vista, Windows 7, 8, 10, 11.
Finally, here I am again to inform you that it is often via a new site created for the need, that we find an OEM program that is artificially given a new commercial lease of life and it is perfectly legal.

Brenda Adams Re this program: I loaded trial and tried to use program on my Win10 pc. It wouldn't stay 'on.' Don't know why. Never got to use it, as a result. Yep, it would start, and within a minute or less, it would close up. I uninstalled it. Done. No more.

fpi fpi @Brenda: For your information, I purchased the program "Wondershare PDFelement with OCR and free lifetime upgrades" with a 50% discount via "SharewareOnSale". Since 2017, I have benefited from several free upgrades. However, the current standard or pro perpetual versions require annual billing to benefit from the free upgrades. Offering free lifetime upgrades is always propaganda. It is not profitable. But yes, this product is evolving with innovative features, which justifies investing. The 50% promotion is regularly offered. So, skipping one or two versions may be a possible solution because it is more profitable. But you must then invest in the perpetual version. Because the monthly subscription which has become the rule is only interesting for the seller! It is a form of life annuity without any risk. It is no coincidence that Microsoft, Adobe, or ... no longer sell updates for their products. Too many users kept their old versions, which satisfied them. Not to mention, that an update allowed the activation of the new License key on the workstation of a new user, for example. Now, as a tenant and not the owner, the License is only for one workstation and activation is only possible once. Stop your subscription and it is a transition to degraded mode is activated immediately. Finally, the obligation to open an account to register is useful for exercising control, but also has a commercial purpose!
For your information again, it's the arrival of object programming has led to a graphical universalization of command menus. Currently, the use of common menus and submenus of application packs facilitates their use. And no more risk that an increase in the character size will disrupt the display by overflow or truncation.
Hence the usefulness of a program created with the most recent graphical interface possible.
Otherwise, we risk ending up with working windows of a fixed size (unable to enlarge or reduce).

John User Very happy with this program! It's the only one that actualy works consistently and is very easy to use. After capturing, you do have to use OCR to translate the text to the clipboard.
