What are people saying about Ellié Computing Merge

O I Is Ellié Computing Merge capable of doing this: I need to find the changes in two English plain text files, but I need to merge them (mainly new text lines) to a translated version of the first English file. Currently, I use another compare tool and manually copy and paste each difference to the third file.

Also, is this offer for the Pro or Standard version of Ellié Computing Merge?

Thanks,
Jan 12 2011 at 12:37am Copy Link
0
Armel Asselin for the easy part: the offer is both for Standard and Pro version.

your merge is not really natural for a differ/merger, but it can be done in ECMerge using the patching feature (producing a non-contextual diff for the English1= English2 diff), then applying it to the translated version, as long as the translated version is translated one English line for one translated line in order. For modified lines, ECMerge will reject them into the clipboard, so you can re-translate by hand (simply paste the clipboard content and changed lines are there in patch format)

Jason'sHat So why is this better than good old WinDiff then?

Armel Asselin @Jason: uh, WindDiff won't compare Word or OpenOffice text, will neither compare nor _synchronize_ FTP sites and so many other things ;-)
I believe the features set tells it all.

miguel Bombardo The German version uses a horribly bad translation.

Opening doc or docx files results in text with so many asterisks instead of the letters originally present that it is unusable for whatever task you have in mind. I don't understand how it is justified to tell future clients "Best of all, Ellié Computing Merge works with Microsoft Word, OpenOffice Text, and RTF documents."
Jan 14 2011 at 11:50pm Copy Link

Armel Asselin the trial version puts asterisks, but of course the purchased version does not!
noted for the german translation, we'll work on improving it.

miguel Bombardo Why don't you mention this restriction - asterisks instead of letters - of the trial version? Or did you?

Another point you could improve. It relates to the HELP file. I was looking for sections where docx is mentioned. Indeed, sections were shown but encountering the docx was painful. You didn't introduce marking the term (here 'docx') I was looking for. Would be very helpful.

Thanks.

@Stephane: ECMerge is relatively equivalent to BC and present on Mac, some features are better in BC some better in ECMerge

miguel Bombardo After having criticized various points in Ellié and a tour de force through other programs I hopefully got to a sound decision which meant buying Ellié. Especially the editor for doc and docx files works exactly.

I assure to be free of any linkages to the provider of this program nor do I have any commercial interests in this company or whatever might be imaginable in this field of conflicts of interests.

Armel Asselin @miguel: cool ;-) just a note, ECMerge will _compare_ doc/docx/rtf/sxw/odf... (the conversion is toward simple text only ECMerge doesn't know how to alter these file formats).

Tazzie For those looking for a comparison to other File comparison tools, I found this page in Wikipedia. I don't know how up to date all of the info is, but I thought I would at least share it in case it might help provide some basis for comparison. Looking at this, Beyond Compare compares pretty favorably, but I think ECMerge in the end still has more options. It all depends on what you need/want from the program :) Hope this helps!

Armel Asselin @Stephane: for example, ECMerge has patch application with preview, it has 'conflict file' loading (files let behind by CVS, SVN, Perforce, Git...) when you update your local copy and there was an unattended merge: ECMerge loads those and present you a normal 2/3-way merge as if fully integrated, ECMerge has a built-in JavaScript engine which makes it suitable for automatic tasks because most diff results can be used from scripts (of course merges, copies and so on can be ran from scripts)
Ellie Computing - Jan 15 2011 at 9:06am Copy Link
0
Armel Asselin @Stephane: ECMerge also has plugins for access to many SCC (CVS, SVN, Perforce, Git, Bazaar, Mercurial, VSS, Darcs), provided you have the commad line for your SCC tool installed, meaning you can compare two SVN branches directly or Perforce to SVN or deploy Git to FTP/S or whatever.

S B Armel,

Are there plans for handling moved blocks of text?

User definable "Anchors" to denote synchronization points to help in comparison?

Syntax-coloring of programming languages? Syntax-structure awareness?

Options for whether white space/capitalization/blank lines/comments/etc. are significant?

Thank you for your quick and candid answers to others' questions!

I've ordered a license and am looking forward to using ECMerge.

Software Guy Ellie computing has offered several different versions that can be viewed by hitting the buy now button. A pop -up window shows the versions and the prices. Please note that the windows or mac standard version is just $14.70. Also please read the older comments, particularly the wiki link for comparisons with other software.
Comparison and merge programs can save hours of time(usually frustrating time). For those that work with multiple copies of revised documents, IMHO $14.70 is a bargain.
I periodically use Beyond Compare or several other file comparison programs; this software is conceptually and practically very similar and performs favorably. However, I have not enough time with today'soffering to do a detailed comparison. Hopefully another bitsdujour fellow may provide additional insight.
Bottom line - this is a great offering that might save hours of reading and comparison, especially if you work with similar or frequently revised files.

HJ B This application needs a better description of exactly what it does, I visited the website, and the descriptions there assume that readers are well acquainted with the problems it seeks to solve.

1. My data is mainly in one of five formats: Word, Excel, PDF, plain text and email. In addition there are graphics.

2. In comparing two or more Word documents, what advantage does this program have over Word's built in comparison function?

3. Does this program work with Excel, pdf, plain text or Thunderbird?

4. Sometimes I get a document in Word Perfect. Does it work with Word Perfect?

5. Can it compare across different formats, e.g Word and a document produced by some other application?

6. Exactly what does the merge function accomplish?

7. When it claims to work with graphics, does that mean graphic to graphic or does it mean the presence of a graphic within a Word document - compared to its presense, absence or location in another Word document?
Jul 20 2011 at 4:01am Copy Link
1
Armel Asselin 2. ECMerge first extracts text from the Word file, thus the comparison is text to text only. This is different
3. ECMerge is a standalone program which in turn can use converters to read various formats into text. For PDF, Excel and Thunderbird you need to install a converter.
4. There is a freely downloadable converter for Word Perfect documents which ECMerge is configured to work with
5. Yes, you can compare any format to any, RTF to DOC, PDF to OpenOffice.
6. The merge function in 2-way let you choose or mix left and right text where there are differences and potentially edit the result. In 3-way, it can determine what to keep from left or right based on an ancestor file. The output is always text only, it won't update Word or such file formats.
7. Yes, this is image to image (e.g. BMP to JPG or GIF to PNG...), graphics inside Word files are not considered.

Lupke Brother Hi Armel,

I see the binary (hex) comparison is on the list. Great! Will it be possible to compare audio files like mp3, wav, exe, (version info et cetera) and registry (local and remote) and registry files in the future? If yes, how long will this take to work in Ecmerge?

ECmerge fits perfectly in XYplorer!
Jul 20 2011 at 6:34am Copy Link

Armel Asselin The hex compare will be in next version, you can see a few screen shots on our blog (http://elliecomputing.wordpress.com).
This is not yet structured binary though (no field semantic / interpretation).
Comparing version info for .exe, mp3, wav is already possible with the current version, you just need to install ExifTool.

Armel Asselin Hi,

this is Armel for Ellié Computing, I'll be present on July 7th to answer your questions. This time there is the new version 2.5; it adds supports for SSH FTP, Debian/RPM package for Linux (in the All platforms version), the Mac OSX version is now much more 'Cocoa native'. Raw binary comparison is there (Hex + ASCII view) and is able to compare huge files (e.g. tested on 7GB virtual disk files).

If you have any question, please ask.
Have a nice week end

Armel Asselin @Yudha: no of course, you don't require any converter to make ECMerge work (even the builtin converter Xtract is not required in fact). However, ECMerge comes with our own RTF/Word/OpenOffice Writer text converter called Xtract, so these formats are handled off the shelf. Xtract also opens ZIP files, so you can compare ZIP contents, to update ZIP content you need to have 7 Zip, WinRAR or WinZip command line (7 Zip works on linux and mac as well) and get the update zip macro here: http://elliecomputing.wor...merge-2-4/

Jul 7 2012 at 6:05am Copy Link

Armel Asselin Basically, this is a "named" or "single client computer if multiple users". If you run e.g. a "single man" business, it means you need one licence even you have 2 PC and a Mac to do your job. If you have a 10 members team, you'll need 10 licences.

H. H. Hallo,
I just tried ecmerge and have the following questions:
1. may there be a problem regarding pdf files? I tried to compare 2 pdf files - the preview seemed to be correct, but when comparing the modus was changed to binary. When trying to change to text-comparison, it was waid, that the documents containe binary letters. Neither scooter beyond compare nor grigsoft compareIt had any problem showing and comparinge these files.

2.is there a possibility to only show e.g. the identical or pasted or deleted or changed file (e.g. with clicking at the green symbol for changed files,... ( or planned this feature for the future)?
Beyond Compare allows to show either all or only identical or only different elements - that gives a better overview in long documents or long folder lists.

3. Do you plan to implement a snapshot - feature for files and
folders in the near future? Beyond Compare has this feature
and I really won´t miss it any longer

Armel Asselin Hi,

1. PDF files can be compared if you install Xpdf or some other PDF converter detected by the plugins system (basically this is just a download away from foolabs.org, place pdftotext.exe somewhere in your PATH), I just verified with the latest version of Xpdf 3.03

2. yes, use the Documet menu / Document quick options / Hides files when... (you can set keyboard shortcuts if you use them often)

3. ECMerge 3 has the infrastructure for it, so we should have it in the coming year.

Regards
Armel

H. H. Hallo,
2. thank you for your response. So I found the quick panel document options (not quite sure when to use the anchor - feature (and not right or lieft) ?. It seems to give a better overview
3. nice to read, that you´ll implement the snapshot feature. It can be really useful to be abgle to see if folder or documents have changed.

1. unfortunately I still didn´t manage to get the pdf-files working. Perhaps you may post areally step-by-step instruction to get that working. I still post it at bdj, since I assume that I´ll not be the only person having difficulties with this opic (and if not solved or being too complicated people may hesitate buying.

Thaynk you for responding again in advance

Armel Asselin Hi,

@H.H.: here is a step by step "pdf tutorial":
1. download the .zip files containing Win32/Win64 executables from Xpdf (http://www.foolabs.org/xpdf), the files is called xpdfbin-win-3.03.zip
2. unzip it where you like on your harddrive
3. the program that interest us is "pdftotext.exe": if you placed it somewhere listed in your PATH variable, you just have to restart ECMerge -- if not, go in the Preferences / Converters panel, find "PDF to Text (xpdf)" entry, open it and set the path of "pdftotext.exe" in the Application field (you can use the Browse button placed aside to do so)
4. verify in the default comparison options (menu Document/Document options...) that "PDF to Text(xpdf)" is enabled in the Converters list.

you're done.

I realize that the PATH stuff is not always practical, the 2.5.187 will contain a new feature: you'll just have to place your converters in a sub-directory called "user-converters" of ECMerge directory and they will be detected (no more need to tweak PATH variable).

Regards
Armel

Armel Asselin Hi again, (I send you the response here so it can profit to everybody)

@H.H. the latest version is the plugin detection code is at http://www.soft.elliecomp...erters.zip, you could unzip it in ECMerge "macros" directory. It should overwrite a file called built_in.js.

this version supports the "user-converters" directory.
NB: you might want to remove a converter before clicking Auto-detect if you tried to tweak parameters (and actually messed with them)

Armel

Hallo,
thanks a lot for the fast solution of the pdf - converter problen. The script-file you posted above works very fine. So i´ve already placed my order for buying the pro version
@customers
Ithink the product is promising, the support reacted fast and sovlved the problem. At this discounted price I´d really recommend buying if one has to compare files and folders. Additiobnally the userfriendly policy (licensed per user, no hardware-footprinted online activation procedure) are additional arguments for buying.
I decided to buy ecmerge pro although I´m already registered user of beyond compare (also a good piece of comparison software with reliable support). But ecmerge has advantages when having to deal with office - text, doc,.. files, because it allows text wrapping, (Beyond compare requires scrolling horicontally - not giving a good overview). So it is much easier in ecmerge to see differences at a glance The visual appearance of ecmerge is fine and man possibilities to adjust.
The (until now not eimplemented) snapshotfeature is told to be developed for future versions
H.H.

I´m, suprised how many fine-tuning features the software has (e.g. when copying from one pane to the other). Probably it will take some time to "discover" alll the capabilities the software has.

Ioannis Voulelakis OK, although it seems a bit drastic for a time-limited trial (what could one do? Compare all the files in his computer while the trial is still active so as not to have to buy it at all? :-) ...

Armel Asselin @Ioannis: Xtract is built separately from ECMerge, although bundled with it, so the "use-days" limit does not apply to it, it just reacts to the presence of a valid serial for ECMerge. The stars are not that annoying in a test perspective.

J S Hi Armel Asselin,

In your 3 part reply to "H. H." (the one showing as the top comment for this current promotion) dated "Ellie Computing Vendor - Saturday at 7:55am" which I'll re-quote here: "... 3. ECMerge 3 has the infrastructure for it, so we should have it in the coming year. ..."

"If" I'm reading that correctly You're suggesting that ECMerge version 3.0 should be available within a year, [ Yes / No ]

Question 1: Do you therefore think, that if somebody purchased today's Bitsdujour DEAL for the current version 2.5 build 186, they would be entitled to a FREE Upgrade of License to cover the next major upgrade of ECMerge?

Question 2: In Your opinion how do you think this program compares to "Beyond Compare" by Scooter Software, or do you know of any websites that compare Your program to some of the others in the market place such as Beyond Compare, Deltopia DeltaWalker etc.?

If you would prefer to answer my questions privately I believe that Bitsdujour show You (as the vendor) my email address and I would be happy to accept your reply this way.

May 8 2013 at 7:02am Copy Link

Armel Asselin A duplicate cleaner indexes files per name/content, then allows you to remove (or operate at some extent) on redundant files.
ECMerge is there to help you work with the files that are _not_ redundant, but only part of it is. It typically happens when coworkers modify the same document. It is useful of course to all kind of durable document or source code work and you want to have a clear view of the evolution of your documents. Working with a good comparison tool and a source code control is a must in this situation.

Laga Mahesa I was very keen on this until I actually tried the demo on two files in my local dropbox folder which I know work fine with WinMerge - an essay by a student, and the subsequent edited version.

Twice I've run it, twice I've seen this. The first time I clicked the tick symbol next to the url in the right pane, the second I pressed Enter in the same url field. Both were an attempt to get that pane to load the content and not show the stupid demo text instead.

Oh, and it needed an end task via task manager to kill.

If you want to see a drastic difference, just compare two similar binaries. You'll see how nice ECMerge displays the binaries compared to WinMerge.

S B I have purchased a Pro license in lieu of updating my version 2.4 of EC Merge Pro (the BDJ promotion price is cheaper than the update).

With version 2.4 I've had problems comparing MS Word (mostly 2007) Documents--with so little success that I had given up.

1) Have there been changes to the way that EC Merge handles MS Word Docs?

2) Are there guidelines about what Word Docs EC Merge can handle? (I remember some brief comments somewhere on the web site, but I cannot now find them)

3) Will EC Merge eventually handle Word 2011 and 2013?

4) Overwhelmingly most of the changes to EC Merge in the past couple of years have been bug fixes (though according to the web site, 2.5 did introduce some enhancements). Is EC Merge still being developed, and what major changes do you anticipate?

It would be great to have a solid, capable comparer MS Office docs: Word, *Excel*, Power Point, etc.

Thanks!

Armel Asselin @S B:

1. we have done a few fixes, the latest is from yesterday (from the files sent by @Laga Mahesa here)
2. ECMerge should be able to handle Word 6 to Word 8 (=97/2000) format nicely, as well as DOCX files.
3. yes we will eventually, the precision of the conversion might vary depending on how complex a particular doc file is.
4. yes, ECMerge is still being developed actively. The version 3.0 to come will bring several new features.

Hrvoje Muzina I bought 2-way version several years ago from BitsDuJour. It came with a promise of free version 3 upgrade. Is version 3 ever coming out?

2-way version turned out to be a waste of money for me as I discovered I really needed the 3-way version but there is no option to upgrade to Pro. So gave up on ECMerge and currently using free Kdiff 3.

Armel Asselin Hrvoje, I'm sorry you did not contact our support, we would have explained you how to upgrade (providing you with a coupon code to reduce the cost to the difference of price).

Version 3 will not be released any time soon (due to its GUI being initially somewhat too ambitious), it is progressing though, and was deployed to some production systems as command line.

Chuck While I'm interested, your website notes the last update was released 02/12/2015, with that version being 2.5 build 204. In addition, your last blog past, dated March 13, 2017, indicated version 3.0 with a new GUI was in work, and also alluded to the potential of limited development time (even implying a lone developer who had a day job). What is the latest? Is this even in development anymore?

Linton User Well it says that it only works with Windows up to Win 8.1... so I gather it probably hasn't had a particularly huge amount of further development carried out on it.

Armel Asselin Yes, I am still developing ECMerge, despite very slowly.
I envision several updates: the JS engine to be replaced by a modern engine, a x64 versions, probably abandoning x86 version on all but Windows. It should give birth to a 2.6

The text comparison algorithm in ECMerge 3.0 delivers results superior to those that can be seen in most other applications, so I'll keep working on it until I get a proper ECMerge release.

Blikk Seeing that it has been 4 years since the last update, the likelihood of being able to get any kind of update at all on a purchase is extremely unlikely.

Per the "Fine Print" tab:
"Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for 12 months"

Armel Asselin When there is an upgrade, we send a newsletter to all the previous customers that asked for it announcing the rebate (typically 40%, can be more for very short periods). For those that are in the free upgrade period, we add their free version to their account.

You have not released an upgrade for 4 years.
Any saving now is negated by the fact that one will most likely need to pay an upgrade fee to get the next update.

Chuck I purchased this six years ago and still have it installed on my Win10 (64) machine; it still works. At the time, it was version 2.5 build 192. The only significant update (for me) occurred four months later with the 64-bit build. Otherwise, the few updates pushed mostly dealt with minor bug fixes and language translations. We are approaching five years since any update was released.

Knowing what I know now, I would still have made the purchase then. That said, I'm not sure I would make the purchase today given the update history.

Caveat emptor.

Kelly Hamblin I am not so big on upgrades because I often don't like the changes made. What I would like to know about this application is: does it come with a help file or is the help online only?
Nov 1 2019 at 7:38am Copy Link

Armel Asselin there is a help file bundled in the installer (basically a ZIP of HTML files), with the appropriate reader and indexes built in ECMerge so that pressing F1 on the various elements brings you to the matching section of the help.

Kelly Hamblin Thank you for answering. I downloaded and installed the app on my Win7 64-bit machine. I tried to load a comparison. The file I added is .rtf. I got this error:

The content of this view could not be loaded because of following error: The text does not conform to UTF encoding (Unicode 8 bits) . . . nary position 15.

Part of the message could not be read.

I am supposing this is an unsolvable issue because my most important files are .rtf. Too bad. I would have like this application.

Kelly Hamblin I've been waiting for this one. Best software of its kind. So glad to see it here this morning. I do however have a question.

When I had troubles the last time this was offered on Bits, the company responded by fixing the program and sending me a link so I could try it. I still have the Pro version 2.5 (build 207) trial installed. After I purchase today can I just register the application I have or do I have to download and install again?

Kelly Hamblin Thanks. Love your software. I was using Beyond Compare, a nice program, but it doesn't merge. Ellié Computing Merge is fully featured and saves me so much work. A huge perk, IMO, is the Help file that I don't have to open a browser to use. I love that, and the UI is clean and out of the way, unlike those big ribbon hogs. Lovely. You've made my day.

Eric Dear Armel,

A few minutes back I purchased a copy of the Pro version of the software.

According to Ellié's Website, the current version is 2.5b207.

Odd enough however, the version I received a link to download is 2.5b205 ...

Mistake? Should I install the trial 207 over the registered 205? (The program doesn't seem to have a "Check for updates NOW" option ...)

Kindly advise.

Thanks in advance for your effective attention to this matter,

Eric

Armel Asselin When you click "Check for Updates" in the "Help / Ellié Computing online" menu, does it present you the version 2.5.207 ?

The latest version is well 2.5.207. It was released to our website a few days before the promotion and was not there when we prepared the promotion.

The only difference is a bug fix in the RTF text extraction program.

All the best,

Armel Asselin @Chuck the version 3 was very ambitious.
Part of it exists and is actually sold as a command line tool for comparison servers behind certain websites.

I don't know if it will ever be released fully. These days I'm renovating the 2.x serie buildchain.

HJ User The description says that "Ellié Computing Merge works with Microsoft Word, OpenOffice Text, and RTF documents.". That is pretty much what the "Features" tabs says.

The description also says: ". . .. these files, images, and folders are ALMOST the same, but not quite. That's where Ellié Computing Merge steps in and makes your world a much better place!."

So:
1. Does the program sort out duplicate folders and graphics?

2. Is the use of the word "merge" appropriate, since this actually seems to be a method by which duplicates can be eliminated and different versions can be kept?

3. It is not unusual to have a situation where there are two or more versions of a document. For example, in one I may have corrected spelling and punctuation, and in the other I may have made substantive changes. My impression is that this program is supposed to point out the differences and then the user must decide whether and how to reconcile the differences.

It is not clear to me how this program differs from the version comparison tools that exist within Microsoft Word.

3. Does the program work with MS Office documents other than MS Word?

4. Does this program have any use with regard to sorting out pdfs or emails or database files?

Armel Asselin Hello HJ,

1. Not natively, the software is primarily a diff/merge tool. Its target is to compare and merge files or folder structures that you want to finally get identical / in sync by comparing their evolution. ECMerge can be programmed in ECMAScript and we developed macros that actually find/sort files and list those with same name, similar size; and lists those identical but again it is not its primary purpose.

2. For text files and folder structures, e.g. for developers, this is indeed a real merge that is handled. For images, binary, Word, OpenOffice Text and so on, this is indeed a comparison, you then choose by yourself what you want to do, knowing the ECMerge does not edit this kind of files

3. currently the target is text oriented office files: Word (doc/docx), OO Text, RTF...

4. not really for "sorting". With respect to PDF, it is useful in combination with pdftotext tool. One example is when you send a Word file to a contractor and they send back a PDF with their modifications in there: you can pinpoint in a matter of seconds what they changed exactly and make your mind. On contracts with dozens of pages it is absolutely wonderful. The rendering is just text, but the feature is there, after all the rendering is 1% of the value.

Armel

M User So, can I create a new picture by comparing 3 pictures and using some parts of one picture and other parts of the other both pictures?

I checked the changelogs and beside one small bugfix in 2020 the last updates were from 2015. Do you intend to update your program with new features in the next time?
Dec 20 2020 at 3:44am Copy Link

Armel Asselin Hi M user,

With respect to picture, you will be able to copy the original images, or the comparison result (that is the highlights if the changes), there is no merge capacity.

We still intend to do updates, first system level (new javascript engine, keeping the soft working on recent version of the OSes), then the text and binary comparison and merge engine should be updated to reflect what is the real power of ECMerge 3. All of this takes much time unfortunately.

Armel Asselin Yes, indeed the big difference is the 3-way merge.
It allows the software to take decisions about what to keep in compared files, introducing comparisons with respect to a common third file that is called the 'ancestor'. It is called that way because it is the common work on which the two other are based.

lisba f Armel, unfortunatelly I uninstalled the program, but you can get perhaps yourself a classical Greek text (e.g. from https://www.ellopos.net/e...43&page=64) and see what you can do. Visitor-2014 @Armel Asselin: Unfortunately I have to confirm that Unicode does not work (at least not with Greek characters). I have tried it with two texts/documents:

a) the text linked above by lisba f (ancient Greek). I copied some lines into a txt.file. In the following screenshot you can see the result in ECMerge:Only a few words are visible, the rest are these strange black lines:
https://imgur.com/a/fqXgXvH
(= link to screenshot)

b) the other document is a rtf-file from myself (containing both Latin and modern Greek characters). There is the same problem as with the above one.

Another comparing software shows all characters without any problems. So there must be some issue with ECMerge.
