Dunking It was a rhetorical question. The software won't run after 12 months unless the subscription is renewed, and there are many reasons why that's a bad thing for the user.

If you do this kind of business to ensure you have a revenue stream (and there is no God-given right to such), then, instead, all you needed to do is enhance the product so existing users will want to purchase upgrades. Or, if they don't, create some other product - a subscription doesn't magically make the product better, just the user poorer.

Next year, how much will it cost to resubscribe? What's to stop you bumping the price by 200% each year when you have a captive userbase? Or deciding you don't want a user to continue with it so cutting them off from authentication? Or forcing them to upgrade to a newer version that's actually worse from the user point of view, and they'd much prefer just to keep using the old one?

No, subscription-ware is a seriously bad business proposition for the user. So: let's move on to the next product, please.
