Jon Koerner I cannot make much sense of this program. There seems to be no built-in help, except for "tooltips", but the tooltips don't make sense. There is a tooltip, for example, on the "Import In Result" button -- but the tooltip says "Import Query Result to File." What can that mean? Usually, "import" means to get something FROM a file, not TO a file. ???

When I tried using it to get contact information about a domain, mostly it seems unable to find anything, and if it does find something, it outputs a jumbled unformatted mess.

I ran a search on bitsdujour.com domain, using the whois.networksolutions.com server. It could not find bitsdujour.com ??? The results were:

TRIAL VERSION HAS THIS TEXT INSERTED IN THE RESULT deebb3b5-54f7-43a2-a942-748fa7adbe59

No match for "BITSDUJOUR.COM".

Then I ran the search for bitsdujour.com using the whois.tucows.com server.

It found some results this time, but the output is an unformatted mess (Below) -- how can this be useful?.

Please note: the registrant of the domain name is specified in the "registrant" field. In most cases, GoDaddy.com, Inc. is not the registrant of domain names listed in this database. TRIAL VERSION HAS THIS TEXT INSERTED IN THE RESULT d8a0e5e4-0d47-4305-bd56-5489d7d7c01b

Constantin Florea Hi,

Please refer to the following post on the Fast Whois forum in which it is explained how to make full use of the application's functionalities:
http://www.iconico.com/di...0&forum=34

In this post you will read about:
- the three ways of getting information about a domain name
- using the application's domain queue to start a Whois query on an unlimited number of domains (press a button and go to lunch)
- using one whois server or all available whois servers for querying domain name information
- using the clipboard as a source for domain names which should be queried
- using Fast Whois to get domain names from any web page or file. The domains are retrieved using built-in regular expressions but you can also define your own regular expressions thus allowing you to search not only for domain names but pretty much anything you want.

At the end of the post you can also see the results of a query run against the whois.tucows.com whois server. The query is ran for these domains:
iconico.com
microsoft.com
ebay.com
amazon.com

Jan-Christoph Ihrens Does this work for German .de domains? Since the DENIC is more restrictive than other registrars regarding WHOIS information, many other programs have problems with .de domains. Since I'm from Germany, a program without this functionality wouldn't make any sense for me.

Supporting DCHK (see http://www.denic.de/en/domaincheck.html) would be even better. ;-)

Nico Westerdale Wojtek, We do 24 hour hour deals here at BitsDuJour. You'll see this deal currently has the "Deal Coming Coon" note in the top right. When the deal goes live then that will change to a countdown timer and the "Buy Now" button will appear.

Until then you can click the "I Want This" button and you'll get and email when the deal goes live.

Steven Avery Hi,

Thanks Nico and Bits. A nice giveaway !

Techies, help me out. There are 3 distinct types of WhoIS, and some programs incorporate the WhoIs with a bunch of other stuff, for better or not.

Desktop
Browser extension
Online

And it is likely smart to have each in your toolkit. Anybody who wants to point to the best of the freebies, please share away. Is Fast in the elite group ?

Thanks.

Jim McGowan Nico,

This program's website is one belonging to you! So is this developed and serviced by you (or your company)?

Also, the web site says this runs on XP and Vista - no mention of Windows 7. Does it run on Windows 7 x64?

Thank you.

cyanic I'm sorry, but the GUI looks absolutely horrible. There are too many buttons, odd colors, and a lot of clutter. It looked as if someone took a noob VB program, an imitation Mac GUI, and one of those programmers who just can't write a program without a skin, together. I'd suggest the removal of the exit button on every dialog box, have message boxes display as the normal Windows message box (it's not as if the enhanced one gives any additional info anyway), and ditch the crazy color scheme and icons.

As for registration, there should be one button only for accepting the key. What's the point of checking it separately?

Lastly, the stop button doesn't actually stop.

P. S. Out of curiosity, why is there an interop library for Wsh?

Brian Crumrine Hi, will Fast WhoIs also collect WhoIs information about a list of IP addresses?
Oct 11 2012 at 7:36am Copy Link
0
Constantin Florea @Brian - It does but you need to specify the right WhoIs Server - or you can query all WhoIs servers inside the application and see which returns the associated WhoIs information. To query all WhoIs servers simply check the "Use All Servers" radiobox and then start a query.

Quill Pen On the surface, this sounds intriguing, although I can't imagine how bad a researcher has to be to spend all day looking up 5 domain owners. :))

Seriously, though, questions I hope the vendor will answer:

a) many web sites either wisely (for the sake of privacy) as well as for malicious reasons cloak direct contact info by using a registrar such as Enom. Does this software differ substantially from the standard roster of WHOIS query/response sites, e.g., APNIC, Internic, ICANN, Global or whatever that are limited to displaying only public registry contact info?
If no, it seems all one would end up with is a series of dead ends to the registrar.
If yes, how can anyone enjoy any privacy? (FWIW, I'm not naive about the diminishing amount of privacy in this world, but this ability would nullify the value of paying to cloak.)

b) does the vendor require any sort of "phone home" link by this software to their server during searches, or will the search functions work while we do our typical blocking of all outbound calls (run once included) to "update" or "gather non-personal data" or other vague PC2Server communications?

c) do the searches performed by Fast WhoIs have the ability to data mine places such as LinkedIn (without us having to belong to or be logged into that dubious site ourselves?) I could see value in the ability to treat LinkedIn as a crisscross directory to pair up company and owner names.

d) I see in the sample image that the software (appears) to hook into Clipboard every so many seconds. Can that be disabled so we're the only ones able to copy/paste collected info from clipboard to a txt or xls file. There exists a chance of revealing personal info such as passwords with software that hooks into Clipboard, especially when multitasking.

TIA for any clarification.

Constantin Florea @Quill Pen, To answer your questions:
a) The program shows what the chosen server returns. It cannot uncloak the registration information.
b) The program does not phone home.
c) The program shows what the chosen server returns. It cannot do this "pair up company and owner names.".
d) Simply uncheck the "Read Clipboard Text Every X sec" check box.

Bruce I have been leery of some domain search services and domain registrars when exploring potential new domain names, for the reason that some the potential name to be discovered and 'locked' up by some 'poacher' services. Practice known as Domain Name Front Running.
Does your Fast WhoIs program service protect against such practices?

Is this on sold separately but with the discount applied?
Oct 5 2018 at 3:04pm Copy Link

Constantin Florea @Greg Newell, The application is relying on WhoIs servers to get the required data. It has default WhoIs servers from which you can select but you can also add your own/specific WhoIs servers to that list.

Constantin Florea @ciprian, The regular price for Fast Whois in the Shopping cart is indeed 16.03 GBP however if you look under the "Sub Total:" text towards the right of the page you will see that there is a "-12.02 GBP" making it 4.01 GBP. The discount for Screen Divider, lower in the Shopping cart page I see is $13.15 GBP. You can add Screen Divider in the cart besides Fast Whois and you would pay 4.01 GBP for Fast Whois and 13.15 GBP for Screen Divider.

Dunking Can Fast Whois use IP addresses?

For spam and hacking reduction I take dodgy IPs from my firewall records, perform a lookup (using a different tool to this) to discover the address range. The actual domain name isn't important to me - it's the whois records for the domain in which the IP resides that is what I am after.
Jul 5 2022 at 3:13am Copy Link
