What are people saying about FileMarker.NET Pro

Danny This is of Folder Marker with the same licensing policy!
Mar 19 2014 at 2:27pm Copy Link
Chris @ Danny

They both look the same but I didn't notice a tab where you can add your own icons into the program like Folder Marker has.
The upgrade policy and support are for 12 months which is listed under "The Fine Print" tab above. That is a deal breaker for me, and the fact I purchased Folder Marker with the add on icon pack when it was offered here.

Roman, ArcticLine @ Danny,
Yes, the producs are very similar, Folder Marker is for folders, FileMarker.NET - for files.

This is true. But this is only 1.0 verstion. We plan to improove the software if in is needed to the users. We plan to add this feature in the future versions.

Javier Gil Wow, this is quite impressive, I think this is the first program of its kind: there are several other programs that can modify folders, but no other can change files.
I've just downloaded the trial version. Very interesting...
I'm using Xplorer2, and it works with it, which is cool. Only thing is I have to "refresh" to see the changes, but perhaps this is just an Xplorer issue (And a small one at that).
By default, I use small icons in the listing. When I choose to change colours, that works nicely, but when I choose a priority icon, it's rather small, I wish I could replace the default icon altogether. But I'm liking it...

Roman, ArcticLine What is the upgrade policy when version 2 comes out?
If it is released within 12 months after purchase, the upgrade is free.
In outher time upgrade will be paid but with discounted price.

Chris The Fine Print says: Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for 12 months. For versions after that, upgrades will require additional payment, which will not be discounted.

You said it will be discounted. Which is correct? And if we get a discount, how much will it be?

I also purchased via PayPal and got the PayPal email but have not received my key. I checked Avangate and it still says pending but PayPal has sent payment.

I received my key and Avangate still says pending.

To buy upgraded version (if it is released after 12 month from the date of the purchase) you will need to pay upgrade price. It will me lower than price of the initail purchase, but I can't tell you right now what discount it would be.

D Rogers Downloaded trial. I noticed I was not able to use this with mp3 files, jpeg or tiff files. Is this correct?
Mar 20 2014 at 1:53pm Copy Link
Bruno Verschraegen How does this play together with something like Dropbox which adds a green tick mark when a file has been synchronised to the cloud? Will using FileMarker make this invisible?
Mar 20 2014 at 2:38pm Copy Link
Javier Gil D Rogers: tested it with mp3 files and it woks ok on my W7 laptop.
Mar 20 2014 at 2:40pm Copy Link
Roman, ArcticLine The software will not change the files, that are drawing miniimage of its content onthe icon. It may be jpg, avi, pdf, or some other types. But this depends of the system and other software you have installed.

The work with dropbox os not tested yet. Feel free to test trial version to make sure it fits your needs
ArcticLine Software - Mar 20 2014 at 2:48pm Copy Link
Bruno Verschraegen I am very interested in the product because colour coding or marking of (some) files is var more useful to me than marking/colouring folders, but I'll pas for now until it is confirmed what it does or does not do to Dropbox marking files. Colouring will not have an impact I assume but I am not sure with regards to marking. I am on a work trip abroad and cannot test now and anyway would prefer not having to test myself just in case FileMarker would change something in a hidden setting for file marking by Dropbox that could not be undone.

Gary Smith I am hesitant to purchase this program because it appears that the developer does not answer some of the questions regarding the product, both here and on other offerings. When offered here back in March 2014, someone asked about mp3 files, jpeg or tiff files, but no response. It also does not work with ".bat" and ".cmd" files. What other file types does it not work with? Also, why not alert users that the file type they are attempting to select cannot be changed; instead, the program goes through the motions, then informs the user that the icon cannot be changed after the attempt is made.

I have tested this version, and found that it takes over port 8080, which affects LAMP setups, such as xampp from working properly. There has been no explanation why port 8080 is needed by a program that its purpose is to change a file's icon.

Some people have been confused about the program not undoing icon changes when it is uninstalled. Changing a file's icon involves changes in the System Registry. After the change is made, the existence of the program that caused the change is no longer important. The simple explanation is that the program does what you could do manually, if you knew what changes to make. So obviously, the changes made are not directly tied to the program that caused the changes. This program does offer the option to undo changes, which means it merely keeps track of changes it made so that it can also be used to undo those same changes. Of course, that option is not available once uninstalled. Maybe a simpler way of understanding it, is that it is not not a lot different from using any text editor to create a file on your hard drive. Other editors (e.g., Notepad, Notepad++, Sublime Text) could also have created the same file. Once created, the program that created it could be uninstalled, but it has no effect on the file created. The same goes for changes in the Registry, whether it be this program or any other.

The version offered here (1.0) or (1.0.1, which came out November 01, 2013) has not been updated for a very long time, so the promises of future enhancements from back in 2014 have not been forthcoming. The changes suggested in Older Comments (add your own icons) would be the same as it is for the folder marker product by the same developer (the code has already been developed). Therefore, that enhancement would not merit a major version anyway, so any update should be free to purchasers of major version 1.0.

I do not see this program as being worth the asking price. After all, it is often given away with a one year license. After the few icons you want changed are done, you don't really need it anymore. Even if it was only $5, until the port 8080 takeover is removed, I wouldn't bother.

If the developer wants to continue selling this product, they need to step up to the plate and be responsive to potential users/purchasers.
