What are people saying about FileStream Sync TOGO

Brian H This program looks very good with lots of features! I didn't see any mention of "activation" or "hardware footprint activation" (that has the potential to cause a lot of problems for those of us who upgrade our computers/hardware components more often than some) listed in the Features or Policy boxes above. Would a rep for the company please let us know about that and how the licensing works? Thanks! -Brian

Joe Miller Hi Brian, The footprint for Sync TOGO activation goes with the installed hard drive or portable device, and not with your computer. For example, you can install it on a USB thumb drive and move it from computer to computer, only one license is required. By the same token, you can install it on a hard drive as a "regular" backup or sync software as well. Incidentally, Sync TOGO has been tested to be compatible with Windows 8 Consumer Preview Build 8250. It is ready to backup or sync with computers running any versions of Windows.

Tazzie Will paid upgrades be discounted for licensed users?

Joe Miller Hi Tazzie, Updates (same version number but different sub number) are always free; major upgrades (new main version) always discounted.

Avi S How are the connections established between multiple computers in order to sync files? Is it predicated upon shared network directories with the appropriate permissions already set, or is there a client software that can send messages directly from one IP address to another (like Simidude?) Alternatively - is there an option to connect computers to one another directly for syncing (via cross cable or USB cable?)
Mar 11 2012 at 12:37am Copy Link
Joe Miller Hi Avi S., You can make connections via network or USB ports to back up or sync files. When you use the USB port, you can install FileStream Sync TOGO on the host computer or on the USB drive. When Sync TOGO is installed on a USB drive, you can move it from computer to computer without having to install it again and it does not require Administrator Priviledges to run and perform the backup or sync tasks. For example, if you want to take work home, all you have to do is to put your data on USB and put it in your pocket. Sync TOGO provides you all the filters and options so it is easy to store only what you need or just the files that have been updated. When you get home, plug it in your home computer and you are ready to go. All you need is one installation of the program on USB.

Avi S Hi Joe,
To clarify: I'm specifically interested in the case where I am syncing a desktop and a laptop, without any USB drive in between. How is the connection to be made between desktop and laptop? Does it need shared network directories with read/write permissions, or does the client software obviate the need for that?
Mar 11 2012 at 3:47am Copy Link
Joe Miller Hi again Avi S., In your specific case, you do need a network connection with permission to access the files and folder but it doesn't have to be mapped.

Steven Avery Hi Folks,

While there are a number of comparisons of cloud sync sites, there is little easily available for sync that is home-based (which in many ways is a nicer concept, imo).

Thus we had at least Powerfolder and Goodsync on Bits and now Filestream on Bits, all which have some pizazz. There are others wellknown, like Syncback and Super Flexible File Synchronizer.

These programs can be radically different in function, ease of use, vendor support and other areas.

Even Donationcoder has only had a bit.

So my request is 2-fold. The vendor could explain what makes his product stand out in the field. Clearly the price is fine today at Bits, why should we bite ?

Also, if we have any articles and feedback from folks who have done their own comparison, share away.

I recently bought WinSettings here from FileStream, and mentioned that I look forward to considering their Turbo Backup, tell us why Sync TOGO stands out.

Well, checking the web site, here are two concerns:

1) No forum, (not even Yahoogroups/Googlegroups) but that is not uncommon

2) An affiliate program with the RegistryBooster scareware and scamware of Uniblue. That is a dealbreaker to me.

Joe Miller Hi Steven, Thank you for your comments. Cloud sites are good in some cases but there are times one runs into large amount of data but limited bandwidth or no connection at all. I hope you find that Sync TOGO offers you reliability, portability, convenience, and tacking and logging.
FileStream, Inc. - Mar 11 2012 at 8:59am Copy Link
Joe Miller Hi Steven, Thank you for your edited comments. I personally use Sync TOGO everyday to back up and sync both between my computers on the network and between my computers and USBs. I only install Sync TOGO on one of my computers and on one of my USBs, which I carry with me when I go home or on the road. What I rely on Sync TOGO the most is its detailed logs so I can go back and confirm what was done. I sometimes also use its Backup option to keep a copy of deleted or overwritten files because USBs do not have Recycle Bin. I have people sending me files with non English file names. Sync TOGO handles those with no problem.

TurboBackup is designed for different purposes. It is primarily a backup program with scheduling, backing up to CD/DVD, to FTP servers, or another drive. It really depends on what your intended uses are. One often sets it up and let it do the work after hours.

Finally, regarding your comments about RegistryBooster. We have not had any users complained about it. With that being said, we have pulled it from our site since the beginning of the year. There may be links left out somewhere. If you come across any, please send us the link so we can take care of it.

Steven Avery Hi,

First the Uniblue stuff:
Here is where you still have the link.
If the program has been working fine for a long time but all of sudden starts misbehaving, it may have to do with Registry errors on your computer. We suggest that you download the Registry Booster free trial version to check if your computer has Registry errors.

I do understand that TurboBackup is your traditional "Backup" program, where Backup4All is one of the leaders. And the Sync programs really are different, although some programs awkwardly try to do both.

I'll try to give SyncTOGO a try tonight. Maybe ask on Donationcoder as well. Often it is hard to decide if sync is worth the effort, (especially on the cloud syncs) since you have to be careful a bit. With cloud sync especially, there have been a number of "got-yas".

Mar 11 2012 at 1:18pm Copy Link
Joe Miller Hi Steven, First, thank you for the links. We took care of it. Please take a look. Second, I am not sure how one defines the leaders of backup software but TurboBackup definitely is among them. Since 1997 FileStream has been providing backup solutions to users. It is known to be easy to use and reliable. One of the differences in our definitions between backup and sync is that backup operation does not allow deletion of files while sync allows deleting files so that files at both ends are the same. It is exactly for the reason that you cited "some programs awkwardly try to do both", we have a different program with emphasis on sync although it does backup as well. A senior executive of a cloud sync company once told us, "try to sync a lot of data when you need it in a hurry and you are not going to get it..." Cloud sync definitely has its usefulness but there are also serious shortcomings. For me, I sleep better when I have my files with me.

Steven Avery Thanks for coverin the Uniblue thing. I am not ready yet to really play with sync, but I will try to get back to you.
