What are people saying about Filter Forge Professional Edition

Louis H Clarification: Filter Forge is also a stand-alone product. You do NOT have to have, or use, Photoshop in order to use this program. It does come with a plug-in feature, which is very nice for those of us who do use Photoshop, but you can use it without needing to invest in, or rent, Photoshop. It also works with other Host applications. A list of these can be found here... http://filterforge.com/do...hosts.html There are over 10,000 filters and effects available for free download, for use with this program. And users are constantly creating and uploading new ones all the time. Each filter/Effect comes normally comes with presets, but you have access to all settings for each and every filter and can fine tune them as you wish. You can save your processed image as BMP JPEG TIFF TGA PNG OpenEXR and PFM. (These are the current graphic files the stand alone program can open.) If you work, in any capacity, with adding Textures and.or Effects to your photographs, I highly recommend you give this program, at minimum, a trial run. They have recently been running a 75% off deal at their website, but that is suppose to be ending today. This is an excellent price for this program. I have been using it since V2. They also usually offer you a chance to purchase a download of the entire filter library for around $30. You can download individual filters as you need/want them, but if you want to get everything currently available, or at least, usually, up to the last month or so, this additional purchase is very helpful. The current backup file of Filters weighs in at around 1.3 GB! There is a built in browser from which you can access, search, and view all of the filters available, allowing you to download only those you need or want. It also lets you know if you have already downloaded, or have the filter you are looking at. Depending on how large you choose to make your library of filters, this is a wonderful little feature that makes it a lot easier to keep track of what you already have. You can also have the Library Browser hide all filters you already have downloaded. There is a very active User Forum..... http://www.filterforge.com/forum/ You can explore the currently available filters and effects at... http://www.filterforge.com/filters/ P.S. I am not affiliated with Filter Forge. I am, however, a very satisfied user. Hopefully the vendor will have someone around to answer questions folks might have, but if you want an actual user's perspective or views, please feel free to ask. I am not an expert user of the program, but I am willing to share what I do know. P.P.S. For MAC users... it is available for you, but it appears this BDJ promotion is only for the Windows version. MAC users can find info at.... http://www.filterforge.com/download/?mac (And it is still on sale there - at least, it appears, for one more day.)

Charles Mitchell It also depends on what components were used to create that certain filter you are using.....The filters with blurs are slow to render but you can always render a lower output and beef it up in photoshop....Also it does gain some speed when you are using the stand-alone version versus using as a plug-in....The cpu is using less resources this way as well.....

Great to hear, there is LUA-scripting embedded.

I am wondering, if there are any LUA-Samples to download somewhere...
Does anybody know some sources?

I installed the trial-version, but could not find anything about LUA, not even in the help-file. So I suppose, to use it, it has to be edited outside from FilterForge and be embedded.

Is there a way to source-level-debug these self-written LUA-scripts?

Because I am new to (but interested in) LUA I have some small questions about it:

(1) I would suppose, LUA in FilterForge will have the standard-LUA-library, plus some additional FilterForge-API-functions. Is this correct?

(2) If I have another program with LUA (e.g. GIMP, which as I have heard has LUA too), will I have the API-functions for this program inside FilterForge's LUA too? (I would suppose not, because - correct assumption? - each program might have it's own LUA-implementation inside. Right?)

and last, but not least:

(3) Can I call FilterForge directly from the command-line (or inside a .BAT-file) with command-line arguments, saying it should just execute a LUA-Script and than return to the caller

Thanks a lot...

Charles Mitchell I am not affiliated with Filter Forge.inc but a long-time user and filter author..CFandM.....There is a section in the FF forums for scripting...There are also example filters that were posted as well in the filter library......

1....not all LUA functions are implemented...FF specific functions....

2....see above...
r
3....FF has its own command line exe inside the installed folders.....You make a filter and then call that filter from the FF command line....

Christian User I am a registered user of filter forge pro 4 version. The problem it is that the old customers are forgotten them of the discounts ! Offers for software upgrade are as expensive as the price of the complete version in promotion on the web site of filter forge !!!
However the upgrade software price must follow the price of the complete version !
Why is not to propose today an upgrade of the version 4 toward the version 5 to the half of the price of this offer : 29$93 ?
If it is not the case I won't buy an update for the price of a complete license !

Filter Forge (Jane) Hi Alex Tadeu Ribeiro Borges, you'll need to have any Filter Forge version and then complete this form to buy the Lifetime Upgrade: https://filterforge.com/b...rades.html .

We always check if the person has Filter Forge and which exactly version. If you have Filter Forge Basic you can buy only Basic Lifetime Upgrade, if you have Standard edition -- Standard Lifetime Upgrade and so on.

Louis H As an end user of Filter Forge for many years, as well as someone who has missed opportunities to take advantage of special discounts for upgrades to apps I use, I understand the various levels of frustration and/or anger one can feel when it appears that they are not getting the same deal as brand new customers. Or even other previous customers who just happen to come across a much better deal.(Biggest offender, at least in my experience, is COREL. Yet even they, when approached politely and with the evidence of a different, better, discount, have honored it for me. I just wish I did not have to scour the Internet to find the better deal.)

This is a ONE day - (maybe two) - and VERY infrequent fantastic discount for a NEW license for Filter Forge. EVERY vendor must continue to increase their New user base in order to keep profitable. It is a simple premise of economics. Thus there are going to be limited time discounts that may indeed be lower than the usual upgrade price. The regular discount for previous customers is an ongoing offer. (And they really do take into consideration if you missed a promotion where that price was lowered for a time.)

There are other apps I use where I have actually waited until a promotion came around here on BDJ and simply purchased a new license. And there are some apps where the vendor only allows you an upgrade price for a limited time, after which you have to pay what every other new customer pays.

Over the many years I have worked with Filter Forge, I have always found them to be constantly offering various promotions - some for New customers, some for old. I never seem to have enough money to take advantage of the Lifetime option, but have learned to always stay alert and take advantage of initial large discounts prior to the release of a new version. They always include the ability to work with the Beta production of those new versions.

Whenever I have had a problem, compliant, or question, customer service has ALWAYS - and I do mean ALWAYS - been very friendly and helpful.

So if you are aware of a RECENT upgrade offer that is better than this offer for a new license, contact them and give them the chance to show the quality of folks they are. (at least in my experience.)

But to hint at there may be a lack of advantage (? respect?) for customers using previous versions because there is only a small difference between a very short term special promotion price to get new customers, and an ongoing price you have been offered for upgrading, is to raise a specter of suspicion that I do not believe is warranted.

(Christian User - I know you directed your question to Filter Forge, but you did so in a public forum. Thus I took the impression you wanted the rest of us to be aware of your question and whatever response Filter Forge provides you. Thus I feel it appropriate to share my own view on the issue you raise.)

There may be some vendors out there who are truly deserving of such a specter. My more than a decade long relationship with Filter Forge has taught me they are not.

This is an absolutely GREAT offer and I do not fault anyone who gets to take advantage of a better deal than I might have had access to. The more folks using the app, the increased chances that someone will create and share an amazing filter with the rest of us users.

Hi Jane,
I hope that your answer is a joke.
It contradicts in all cases the seriousness that assigns you @Louis H.
I bought Filter Forge 4 pro a few weeks before the merchandising of the version 5
Other publishers appear more generous in a same situation since they offer the new version to those who bought all lately the previous version !
Your commercial politics is to attract new purchasers and solely that !
It is your choice, but I think that it is a bad choice....
I thank you for the 5 dollars but as I am not a beggar I will be content with my version 4....
Good day

D0tted FIlter Forge is an amazing program. I've had it for years and haven't fully used it to it's potential. This is a great offer. Hi Jane,
1- "Hi Christian User, we offered a free upgrade to every person who had bought Filter Forge 4.0 two weeks before the release."
I bought the product October 14, 2015 and I never received such a proposition...
2 - in not paying attention to your former customers (proportional update proposition to the discount price of a full license)
you go without from an important recipe coming from the updates for your former customers who also have the unpleasant impression that they don't count for you.
Because it is sure: I will never buy the update of your product to the appreciably equivalent price of a complete discount license !
And I think that a lot of your customers approve this point of view. To see the remark of @Petr.....Thanks @Petr !
Best regards

Louis H Hello Jane,

I am not one of your customers who agree with the point of view put forth by Christian User or Petr.

I reiterate that I neither feel disrespected nor mistreated by Filter Forge.

It does leave me with questions as to why some people feel that being given an upgrade price of 86% off, when most companies offer around 50% or less, simply because new customers occasionally get access to a promotion of an almost similar discount.

I wonder if they have siblings and keep a tally of how much money their parents spend on each of them, according to birth order, for birthdays or holidays where gift-giving is traditional.

I love the program and I will continue to upgrade to each new version.

Christian User Whoah @Louis H !!!

after having formulated all these compliments and unwound the red carpet I hope that the Filter Forge society is going to offer you the version 6 of the software !!!
Actually the software doesn't cost $ 399 and no one is mad enough to buy it to that price....
It is a commercial trick to persuade the customer that he made a good operation ! This product is constantly on sale at the surroundings of $ 90 on the website of the publisher and it is its real price.
Therefore the discount that you put forward is well less important than what you pretend !
I buy a lot of photoshop plugins and for example the Akvis society (well-known universally for her plugins for professional photographers) offers the updates (including major upgrades) of her products during one year after the purchase.
It is then possible to put up to date the set of her products (more of 20) for the sum of $ 35.
Do you see the difference?

Lito Actually I want to also know if that free upgrade to v6 is guaranteed to be included if purchased today. According to your previous post you gave a free upgrade to anyone who bought the product 2 weeks before the release, is that the case here? According to your web site v6 is going to be released in November with no actual date set and if that policy still holds and you release it on the 30th or even in December if you run into some bugs that delays the release, that is going to be well over 2 weeks.

H. H. @ Lonny
Hallo,

1.just installed trial version 9 - it can be used as standalone and also can be used with affinity photo (tested with affinity Photo 1.7)
In affinity you have to allow unknown plugins in the settings and restart affinity
(link to german description)
https://affinity.help/pho...%20Plugins
- you can download the trial and install (30day full working trial) with the bitsdujour trial download link

2. If you look at the fine-print tab above
you will find
"After you purchase Filter Forge Professional Edition (Windows) it may be used indefinitely", this usually means you can use the version (9) you bought indefinitely, but have to pay for upgrades e.g. version 10 (mostly discounted)

so, fortunately, they do not force customers to use subscription
(if you look at their homepage you will see that they also have a subscription as alternative, but you can decide what you personally prefer)

Hope this is helpful, the bdj price is a really good price for starting with filter forge pro to my opinion

would be fine if somebody could answer the several user questions
reliable support would be a recommendation!

@ Linton
perhaps you may contact Ken Carlino from Pixarra (btw great creative software) or ask the question in the user forum of pixarra too. Usually, Pixarra has reliable support. If not working now you may make a suggestion for implementing support for filter forge plugins.

Since Filter Forge also works as stand-alone program you can use it independently of pixarra plugin support -
workaround:
in pixarra twistedbrush choose edit -"copy layer or copy merged"
in filter forge you just right-click in the preview area and choose "paste-image"
than select the effect you wish, then
just right-click on the preview-image again,
select "copy image" (seems that you do not have to save the image before, so that´s not time-consuming) and in pixarra twistedbrush you choose "edit" "paste".
It works quite fast, but of course plugin would be even more comfortable.

@H.H. Thanks for all the answers! And you're right -- even if you can't use FF in a plugin mode just try standalone version + copy&paste feature. Read more here -- https://www.filterforge.c...paste.html

H. H. @ filter forge
I bought filter forge 3, 4, 5,6,7 mostly with backup and (since available) additional librarian.
So the sum I've paid exceeds the lifetime upgrade price for filter forge and librarian already by far.If necessary I can post you the order confirmation of the bills (which email address?)
Thank you for responding again in advance
Best regards

Dunking I wanted to like this and cough for a license, so ran it up in a W7 VM to try out (as I do most things I trial). Wouldn't start, and by that I mean it literally wouldn't even get going before stopping - there was absolutely nothing happening at all. Task manager couldn't spot anything either.

Tried it in a different, newer, VM and the same thing. One VM had AVG free and the other had nothing at all in the way of AV or firewalling.

Sorry, but can't risk losing the money when it doesn't work on my main machine, and what about when I'm forced to upgrade my PC sometime? Is it going to run on that? My experience suggests I shouldn't rely on it doing so.

Hallo,
I used filter forge at physical machine with windows 7 ultimate (64bit) (Intel) and version 5,6,7 (full versions) and also tested version 8 and now v.9 trial - every version was / is running without problems.
What virtualization program do you use? Running on amd or intel?

As far as I remember II tested a previous version at intel i3 with vmware and windows 7. That was running without problems too.
Sometimes programs seem to refuse working on virtual machines (had e.g. some dificulties with testing corel and magix products).
I'm user and customer of filter forge since version 3 and think that one can
"risk" to make an installation with the trial version, did not fînd anything suspicious until now and also decided to install version 9 trial yesterday. Malwarebyte did not find any pup or malware.

Dunking Thanks for your thoughts, H. H.

I might try that. My concern isn't malware or PUPs (I trust my AV and the wider Bits community to sort that out) but rather the 'legitimate' leaving of rubbish all over the PC after uninstalling. There is an awful lot of stuff out there that just blindly installs to program files, or dumps reams of data in MyDocument, or fills the registry with untold numbers of configuration options then leaves all that there on uninstall.

I am not interested in having to re-install the OS every couple of months because things I test overwhelm it with no-longer relevant rubbish. I am not suggesting that FF does that, only that this is the reason I test in a VM first to find out ;)

H. H. @Dunking,
yes that s correct. 3 alternative testing methods sometimes can work
- installing sandboxed (https://www.sandboxie.com/), as far as I remember that worked with previous filter forge version
or using shadow defender (I would recommend having an actual system backup when using shadow defender just in case something went wrong)
or use a good uninstaller software that takes snapshots before and after installing (e.g. iobit uninstaller, total uninstall, soft organizer,...)

Dunking @ H. H.

I have and use Sandboxie and have Revo plus another uninstaller, but they all have some downside. Shadow Defender is a new one on me, so thanks for the link to that. I would be tempted were it not looking rather unloved and without any updates for quite a long time.

Filter Forge (Jane) @Linton We've tried to install Filter Forge on Pixarra. It didn't work. Yes, they say that Pixarra supports 8b plugins, but still something goes wrong when the host tries to send Filter Forge the parameters.

So the answer is -- you can use Filter Forge in a standalone mode and a copy&paste feature.

Filter Forge (Jane) @Dunking Filter Forge doesn't work on VM. It is a feature of our security system.
