_*_ I just got the pro version the other day from another site. I like the software and it does a nice job.

The one thing I really think you should reconsider is the icon for "My Porno" displaying a two breasts. Is this really an "Everyday" icon that is necessary?

I personally think it makes your company appear less then trustworthy.

There is no reason to offer a porn icon, since users can create their own icons if they so chose and put it into the program.

It may seem picky, but it devalues your company as I see it, and it is the reason I have hesitated buying the full version and add-on packs.

1) IPersistFile::Save failed; code 0x80070005. Access denied.

2) Error creating registry key:

I can't even uninstall it without getting an "access denied" error messages. Had to do a system restore. After installing I also tried to change folder colors, but this software would not do so.

Incorporeo Presence Hi guys from BitsDuJour!
You are doing a fantastic job with all this giveaway software!

However, I must say your FB platform MUST be improved!
Ok, maybe it's our problem here, but lately Firefox froze up when we tried to login...

Sorry about this complaint but...
Why don't you keep it simple as it was before?

Greetings!

Peter User How much computer resources does it use. Can it be turned on only when needed then turned off again so that it does not use the computer resources when not needed? If it can be turned off does the file still maintain their color?
Do you have or planning to have a version that runs on usb alone?

Adam Bryan I understand the need for:

"You must install/register the software while the promotion is active, and cannot do so afterwards."

...but if others are like me they will probably tend to steer away from promos with this, as they prefer to be able to re-install after crash.

However, I have made an exception this time because of the usefulness I see in this software so Thank You

BearPup Unfortunately it doesn't work with Explorer replacements like Xplorer² but only with Windows Explorer. As I only use Windows Explorer when a specific operation requires it, this software, useful as it it, doesn't work for me.

Clive Richards The requirement as I read it is that you have to register today - however the terms say that he license is transferable to a new computer or re-installation. I imagine therefore that "today" only refers to the process of obtaining a key and that once you have the key you will be able to use it later during a re-install.
Also it says that folders once changed can be moved to another computer without changing the color. I imagine all this does is to simplify the process of changing the icon attached to the folder. As this is something I already do through folder properties I don't personally need it. However for anyone that wants to do this regularly the software offers an easy to use interface. My only criticism is the need to pay for additional folder icons.

Hawkeye @Anthony, You need to download from the link, FolderMarkerHome-GiveawayEdition-May2015.exe, after you get your reg key. The key will not work for the trial from their website. Guess they forgot to mention that.

1) Don't waste your time, downloading the extra icons. You cannot see all them them before you buy. So much for the so called demo's. They don't even publish a list so you can see what you're buying.

2) When you enter your email address for the free colored icons, http://foldermarker.com/cb-colors.php, you will probably not get a link. I have been waiting for over an hour, nothing as yet.

FYI, the FolderMarker.exe from the FolderMarkerHome-GiveawayEdition-May2015.exe, which the reg key works was last updated, 06/01/14 and the trial versions for the Home and Pro versions were last updated on 08/22/13. All show version 4.2. I always try to verify the latest version info before buying, so I can determine if the product is still in development or not.

However, I'm considering in buying the Pro version, but the two big issues for me are #1 and #2 above and what is the price of the upgrade after your free 12 months of upgrades has expired?

It would be nice to hear from the vendor on the above items listed.

Thanks,

Hawkeye @BearPup, Thanks for the info. Here are a couple of more tests.

It appears to work fine with XYPlorer when changing the icons using the right click option. They get updated immediately.

With Multi Commander, you will need to exit and restart to see the updated icons. Pressing F5, refresh will not update the icons.

BearPup Well I stand corrected. It does work with Xplorer² - like the other software mentioned, Xplorer² needs a re-start before it shows the changed icon.

Adam Bryan Possible Improvement/Added Feature I would like would be a configurable path that would auto-load/import custom icons that the user has already created rather than having to import manually.

Also, what if a user creates his/her own set of icons...they would be bundled up/possibly mixed up with other icons and icon sets - a way to keep icons/icon sets separate whilst keeping the UI tidy would also help.

But so far I am very pleased with your software,
Thank You

Hawkeye @Anthony, Make sure when you copy and paste the key code, that you actually copied it completely. If you miss one character, it will act like the serial is no good and when you restart, it will still be in trial mode.

I would suggest, copy and paste the key code in notepad. Verify that you copied it completely, by verifying the first few characters and verify the last few as well. Once verified then copy and paste in the program. You would think it would give you an error message that the key is not complete if it's missing a character or two. On some screens you may not see the entire key at once. Something so minor can be a real pain.

Hope this will help you and others if it fails to register.

Hawkeye @Peter, I really doubt you will see a portable version based on the following from their website.

It is licensed by the machine and by the user. Meaning, two machines needs two licenses and what is really surprising, if you have one machine with five users sharing the one machine, they expect you to buy five licenses, one for each user, which is insane.

It appears, that the memory usage is for running the UI only, under 10kb. When you exit the program, there is nothing running that I can see but this was a very quick check.

I am not affiliated with the developers of this application, however as far as I can tell other than adding context menu entries (right click) no other resources are used until you launch the application itself. It is effectively an icon changer so it does not need to be running all the time. As for USB version it's unlikely as others have mentioned licensing would become problematic.

Hope this helps!

Anthony User @Hawkeye, I have just had another go with the problem of non-acceptance of the reg. key by Folder Marker. I shut down my Anti-virus software (Panda 2015) and then carried out a fresh installation. After installation I pasted the "Key" into Folder Marker and this time it accepted without any problems. On previous attempts when Panda 2015 complained I "allowed" it to carry on with the installation, but this last time I hit "Deny" and stopped it running.
I guess, just another time when Anti-virus software causes software installation problems.
Thank you once again for your help.

Tortuga Hi All :)
Don't know if my comment will go through... Lets see ...
Can those who bought the Pro version, or installed the Home version be able to post back, to confirm if you still have adverts showing ?? If you read the comments on the BdJ Pro page, there was a big discussion abt the adware they added to their software, *even* to the Pro version (advertising pop-ups). That, plus the restrictive license and the lack of customer care, I decided not to buy.
As per the company: "... Pro has ads module build-in it is true, but we are trying to do our ads not very annoying." and "... In any case the ad is shown not more than ONCE a day." [emphasis theirs, not mine]
And apparently, one can *not* turn off these pop-ups!! Someone tried, blocking it through the firewall, but it didn't work.
So, all in all, this soft is interesting, even though it's an expensive one trick pony, but adding adverts to the paid versions was the last straw for me. But, if the adware was removed, I wd consider it again.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can confirm one way or the other.

Peace

Hawkeye @Tortuga, I only installed the Home version for now. I have seen no ads at all in the free version. If I were to purchase the Pro version, I would expect to see no ads at all.

Where did you see that the ads are supposedly in both versions of this software?

As I said, if you go to the BdJ Pro promo page, all is there, the questions from users, the 'explanations' from the company.
I can't include the url here, otherwise my post gets blocked
Just subs *pro* instead of *home* on the url. Search for "pop-up", you'll find it, on the comments for the Dec.2014 promo.
But if you read back on older comments ... you'll learn even more!
The company confirmed the adware is included on *ALL* versions, free & paid!!
I really found it unacceptable, so until they have the adware, I will NOT consider purchasing it.

Hope this helps
Peace

Peter User Great Deal

The following is my opinion and suggestion.
If it were true...Then adware in any paid version is of bad taste. The only other paid thing that I know of that has ads in it is the Kindle. But as far as I know they offer an ad free version at a slightly higher price. you might consider doing the same.

In your future improvements, you might consider the ability to search for files with same icons in a folder or in a drive. Say If I have files that I don't want a peer to see... I might mark them with the same icon ( maybe in different folders)
and if my computer is borrowed by my peer...I can easily search them through out a folder or drive and globally delete...copy...rename or encrypt them fast and easy with only a few keystrokes. I can also mark duplicate files with the same icon and later globally search them and globally delete...copy...rename or encrypt them fast and easy with only a few keystrokes. This will make your software more useful to me and to other users.

Regards
Peter

Hawkeye @Toruga, Thanks for the info. I included it here so everyone knows that the Pro version does have adware included. If it popups up once, that is once too many times for a paid version. I can only assume this will be a deal breaker for most people.

The following is from this link. http://www.bitsdujour.com.../in=search

Roman, ArcticLine >> Does this 'paid' Pro version contain the same annoying adware?

Folder Marker Pro has ads module build-in it is true, but we are trying to do our ads not very annoying; this is why we do special offers not often than once per month (2 times per month in very rare cases). It means if you use “Don’t show me this offer again I am not interested” checkbox, you are forced to use the checkbox once per month. But you are still informed about future offers, which may be interesting to you.

Folder Marker Pro has ads module build-in it is true, but we are trying to do our ads not very annoying. This is how it works:
1) In any case the ad is shown not more than ONCE a day.
2) We do special offers not often than once per month (2 times per month in very rare cases).
3) We disturb paid users even rarely.
4) When you see the ad, you can check “Don’t show me this offer again I am not interested” checkbox. See http://my.jetscreenshot.c...-hjfi-17kb. Doing this, Folder Marker will not disturb you anymore with the current offer you see, but when new offer comes, you will see it.
5) There are way to turn-off the ads AT ALL. If you are interested to do this, please write to our support service, they will provide you with instructions. It may sounds good, but it also means you are not informed about 30%, 50%, 70% discounts or even 100%-free giveaways we plan to provide from time-to-time to our users. Some of them are unique and we don’t inform about them by email or Facebook/Twitter post.

================

It has to be mentioned that those free "giveaway" installations only work once with the provided giveaway key.

I had to reinstall Windows and Foldermarker on the same PC, and now the SN doesn't work any longer. Prog remains trial for remaining 30 days.

You have to purchase the program to save your former installation.

Very bad.

Constantin Florea @Ela S., Some of our giveaways do have limitations on the number of days in which the application can be registered. Other giveaways do not. This is specified in "The Fine Print" tab in the promotion page. In the case of this promotion the phrase in "The Fine Print" tab referring to the limitation is:
You must install/register the software while the promotion is active, and cannot do so afterwards.

Clive Richards I think you will find that this is the same with lots of free give away software (certainly I have experienced this from other give away sites) This is why I now do a complete image back up of my C: drive which incrementally updates daily. Now if I need to re-install all I have to do is to boot from the back up recovery CD and pick the date I want to restore from. Bingo - all my programs are present and working. Of course to do this it is best to keep all your data on a separate drive so that the only things on your C drive will be the OS and programs. Out of interest I remember emailing one company whose software I had lost in a rebuild and they were kind enough to let me have another temporary code - always worth asking them.

BearPup Just to add another voice to the fray, It is the very rare software that allows for re-installing it past the time it was once free. I think I'm down to three such programs.

I also use a clone / imaging program (Keriver 1-Click Restore Free) which allows me to go back to the last cloning (usually no more than a week old). And sometimes, like with Start Menu (StartMenuX), there is no choice but to buy the program. But if you like the program well enough, then....

It may not be what you want, but it is what is.

Ela S. Thanks Constantin for your rapid answer. In fact, it just took me some time to find this fineprint rsp phrase. The confirmation mail just indicated:

"This version of Folder Marker is for HOME and personal use only. If you need Folder Marker for office you have to buy Pro license. This license is for one user and/or for one computer. According to Giveaway terms, you have no free upgrades and free support."

No hint about installation period etc. Users now have to pay the full price in case of reinstallation.

Maybe these important informations may be underlined in next actions.

Many thanks.

Type After years of use I got fed up with the crashing of all instances of Window Explorer when the icon/GDI table maxes out at 9,999 objects (Folder Marker doesn't flush itself). No fixes in years.
I switched to FolderIco https://www.folderico.com/ and have no regrets!

ArcticLine Software - Apr 7 2016 at 10:56am Copy Link

Type Nope! I have about 8 icon categories, so around 100 icons.
But since Folder marker doesn't flush itself, *every* time you right-click in Explorer it will load all 100 icons to memory/GDI table.
After ~100 right-clicks, Windows Explorer GDI is completely saturated, hits its limit and will crash all instances!
I've tried contacting support and making my own work arounds/scripts, but in the end it was simply more productive to switch.

You other application, FileMarker.NET is still excellent however and I continue to use that every day :)
