Virus Scan for FolderMatch

CJCotter I tried out FolderMatch. I have a program that changes the individual folder icons to anything of my choosing. To do so, it creates a hidden .ICO file and a hidden system .INI file. FolderMatch copies the hidden files, but does not preserve the folder icon change. FolderMatch returns the folders to their default manila. Can this be fixed somehow? Thank you.

Try manually copying these same files to another folder using only Explorer, are the new icons retained? I suspect that they are not.

FolderMatch performs a simple copy of the files in the folder from one folder to the other using your underlying Windows file system. I suspect that perhaps your icon changing program is relying on absolute paths and when you change the folder locations, the path information stored in the INI files becomes incorrect? I can't truly say since I am not familiar with that program or how it works.

Try sending their support group this question. They'll know the inner workings of their program and be better able to tell you why copying the files from one folder to another doesn't work for you.

CJCotter Yes, there are some folder-icon-changing programs that rely on the icon and the folder remaining in the same location. The one I have does not. It makes them independent and portable. I can copy them to other locations in my computer, or onto to other computers. You have my email. If you send me yours, I will send back a changed folder so that you can test FolderMatch with it.

if you are going to be synching the two computers to each other only one license is needed. If you're going to be using FM on each of the computers to sync with multiple other machines then you'll need a license for each computer.

Ralph Bressler I am always looking for a better program so I gave this one a try. I have been using BeyondCompare and have been very pleased with its performance. FolderMatch does not seem to have a way to make a comparison between a folder on your computer and one on an FTP server. This is very important to me. After making the comparison FM lists the files and folders with a symbol to indicate what it found. I deleted a file and FM went back to rescan everything again! THis takes time especially when scanning a lot of files and folders. For me, BeyondCompare is a better choice.

Techtoysavvy low cost Home License Upgrade
What is the price and can we buy it today?

I am interested in using this software to consolidate files from multiple older computers at home onto a server. I will try this today by installing this on my server. From what I understand i should only need 1 license since I should be able to mount the folders located on other computers as shares on the server.

In any case, this could be useful on many computers, for example to keep my kids laptops/desktops in sync, delete leftovers etc. Let me know about the Home License.

TAPTRONIC What is the maxiumum file size permitted when using the "view file differences" (http://www.foldermatch.co...rences.png) functionality? I sometimes need to compare tremendous files, over 4GB in size and at the moment there are no options to view that amount of data. Can this program handle that size file?

Art (Salty Brine Software) NC Buyer - Honestly, the file difference viewer would probably be very sluggish on a file that size. You might need a more specialized software for that task. Perhaps a tool like Araxis Merge would be able to handle those file sizes.

lemonade soda I really like FolderMatch and used to use it a lot about 6 or 7 years ago. Since that time, my folder replication needs have moved from local LAN to WAN. So I don't use it anymore. Does the new version of foldermatch allow me to replicate over WAN? (I run a home server with all my files, and I want to replicate my laptop when I am travelling, on holiday, at work etc.) MS do a great tool for this, but it requires a domain, so business environment only. I really need a home solution, and so few options exist. Hope foldermatch can help!

1) Using only Windows Explorer from the computer that FM is installed on you can see both folders and their contents. (without any form of authentication being required to access either)

Chris I downloaded the trial and when I try to install it I get this error:

Chris I also checked that location and I unhid files and folders and system files and folders and there is no file there with that name. I have even rebooted my computer and tried to install it again and still get that error.

The error code also points in the same direction - an error code of 5 coming from Windows means "Access is Denied". This is not the best forum to work thru support issues. Art (Salty Brine Software) FolderMatch v3.7 can compare and copy files/folders with unicode characters if you've installed those language packs in Windows even if the characters are not not your system defined default language.

What it can't do is display them in the comparison results window. The names will appear with question mark characters in place of the unicode characters. Once this happens the names are corrupted and if you ask FM to do anything with those files, it won't be able to.

If FM does not need to display those unicode chars (often achievable by simply comparison the two parent folders one level higher in the folder tree) then it can compare and copy the successfully

Harold Morris Thx for response. Am using admin account (only account). Temporarily suspended security software and program installed. However (always seems to be one) when starting the program, after selecting 'continue' at registration screen the following error appears: Runtime error 339. Component MSCOMCTL.OCX or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid.

George Butel I don't need to buy FolderMatch again, but I thought I'd add my two cents worth here. I bought it on 7/31/10, and I must say that it is the most useful utility I've ever used. I don't trust automatic synchronization programs; I like to see what's there and what's the same and what's different, and, besides, I'm always changing things like folder names, which would mess up any automatic program. One time it even helped me figure out an odd Windows glitch when it kept telling me that two apparently identical folders were different. It turned out that one of them had an invisible unicode character in the file name.

SKY Well, I was just about to purchase this item but reading about all the problems people are having with it, I think I will pass. It is a good thing that someone from the vendor is answering concerns here hands on, but trying to direct complainers away from this open forum to their own, so that the software does not look too problematic to people like me, is a bad move. Further than that, I have never heard that one would have to do a simple installation in safe mode, which, if needed, I would NEVER do or even would not know how to. Pity, because I needed this kind of program to sort out my internal and external HDDs. But I cannot afford to risk it, pay for it and then encounter all these problems users here are having and then (since I will not follow strange advises like safe mode install) have problems getting a refund. Why can't you offer a product AFTER all the bugs have been ironed out? Are discounted software seekers your involuntary and in this case, paying testers? At least offer it for free so we can all try to deal with it and once all is perfect, offer it for sale.

John Terdik Art Araya - Currently I use SyncBackPro for my data backups on four home PCs where everything is backed up to a 14TB RAID 5 array. Each day SBP runs about 40 to 50 jobs. One of the jobs on each system is to sync the documents folder (about 100 GB) across all my PCs.
I use BC mainly to compare folders and most often use it to sync those folders or move/copy stuff from one folder (source) to another (destination). I've become very comfortable with BC interface and find it very easy to use.
For my OS drive imaging I currently use Acronis True Image 2014, each night incremental runs are made and once a week a full BU is run on all four systems. The output of TI is placed on the RAID 5.
I'm always looking for better solutions to make my PC life easier but frequently I find myself in PC hell where the backup have saved me numerous times.
I also test a lot of software. I plan to extend my usage of VMware Workstation to assist this effort.

Art (Salty Brine Software) Hi John - I don't see how FM would help you in the process you describe above beyond what BC is already providing for you. I think it would be redundant. You are welcome to download it and try it for free to see if you prefer its operation over BC. There are some operations I would prefer FM for and some I would prefer BC for. For a simple compare and copy/move of folders it's pretty much a toss up. They both do that well.

The changelog page on your website shows that the software is currently at version 3.7.3. The Fine Print section on Bitsdujour states that the updates will be free for minor versions, and that the next full version would require additional payment, and that it would be discounted only if the user had purchased the last major version.

What are you considering the next major version number? Is the next major version considered 3.8.0 or is it 4.0.0?

Thanks for your reply. I think of major releases being the same. The reason I asked was due to seeing an offer on your website to upgrade from version 3.4.8 for $16. I would have thought that would be free based on the Bitsdujour Fine Print section, which says that the updates will be free for minor versions, and that the next full version would require additional payment, and that it would be discounted only if the user had purchased the last major version (3.0). Did your upgrade version policy change at some point?

The version you sell now is version 3.7.3, which is close to the 4.0 version. Since today's buyers are way past purchasing the last major version (3.0), we would have to pay full price for version 4.0, although we would not get many minor updates before version 4.0.

I am always concerned about purchasing software when the version number is close to the next major version, due to that being the end of free updates.

The "free updates to the next major version" scenario gets more important the closer the current version gets to the next major version number. Imagine if this were version 3.9.8. We would get only one update (to 3.9.9) before the next major (4.0.0) version, which would be a paid for update. If the current version were barely past a major release number, we would get the opportunity to have more minor updates (a greater bang for our buck).

This is the flaw in the "until next major version" update programs for buyers. Some software companies have implemented other update methods to protect user's investment.

Here is one buyers cannot complain about too much. ...

Since the current version (3.7.3) is close to the end of the numbers before version 4.0.0 comes out, and since Salty Brine Software is a forward thinking company, would your company consider starting a plan that would allow free updates to the same minor version number of the next major version number, which would be version 4.7.3? After that, the user pays for the next update. Therefore, late version buyers may get a major version feature, but not for all minor versions of that major release, and earlier version buyers would get more free updates. It evens out the update issue to persuade buyers of any version that their investment is protected.

J S Dear Art Araya, I like to know Everything there is to know before I make my purchase, so I have questions for you about the program and pricing:

Q1. Does Folder Match copy or match EXACT TiME as well as DATE for both Files AND FOLDERS or do you offer some form of Date & Time tweaking method to ensure exact reproduction. (I own a number of these types of programs and surprisingly EXACT Folder Dates and Times is not always considered important, however some programs such as Beyond Compare offer manual tweaking tools)

Q2. There is no mention in The Fine Print tab details, whether the program requires "online activation" of the license or perhaps a different type of activation such as 'activation of license by email'.

In the 7 years since I discovered BdJ and I have actively participated in Bits Du Jour promotions and User comments, the VAST MAJORiTY of Bits du Jour User's HATE online product activation. (I suppose we take it as a 'slur' againt our honesty)

There were lots of reasons behind this which are not really relevant to this discussion though we have no problems explaining it to you, if you'd like. In terms of your question, the answer remains, the next major release of FM will be version 4 and any revisions before that will be considered minor (and free) for a BDJ user who purchases this offer of FM v3.7.3.

Q1)

FM can compare file modification date/times exactly or it can factor in issues such as Daylight Savings Time and FAT/NTFS timestamp precision issues. This is user configurable.

Folder dates are not considered at all.

Q2)

FM does NOT require online activation

Q3)

We haven't really finalized the final pricing structure for version 4. I'd hate to quote you something wrong in this response. My best guess is that the upgrade from v3 to v4 will cost somewhere in the $16-$18 range.

In terms of your comment about vendors offering their product on BDJ right before releasing a new version - FM is being offered on BDJ at their request. We did not approach them or select the date of the promotion.

We are working on version 4 and hope it'll be ready in a few months but you know how these things go, it could be another 6 months before we're ready to release it.

For instance, if you're comparing and synching your desktop to your laptop and you've got FM installed on one of them, you really only need one license. If you've got FM installed on your desktop and your laptop and you're using it on each to perform various functions on each one at different times, then we'd like you to purchase two licenses.

We do offer a Home License upgrade for personal use which allows a user to purchase an additional add-on license to permit usage of FM on all (unlimited number) home computers.

If your usage is for business we do offer reduced pricing on multiple license purchases.

So as you can see, we're not super rigid about this like MS is for example. But yet we are trying to prevent the scenario where one license is purchased for a low price and then used on hundreds of computers. It's an intent thing. We're not going to come to your home or office to audit this. We're just looking for a fair agreement for both sides.

There is no portable version of FolderMatch.

The current version has partial Unicode support. The core code supports Unicode but the user interface does not. It can compare/copy/delete/move/rename them but only if it doesn't haven't to display the names on the user interface. Once the name is displayed it becomes corrupted with ????? characters.

The next major release of FM provides full Unicode support.

John User I downloaded the software and gave it a try. I like it.

However, once again like many of the offerings on BDJ I am reluctant to purchase because of the one license per computer deal. I am a snowbird (part of the year in Florida and part in NJ) and have a desktop PC in each location. It is my understanding that I would then need to purchase a license for each machine even though I would only be using one machine at a time roughly for six months each year. Or, I suppose I would have to get in touch with customer support twice a year to change the license?

Although I like the software, it would be a little too pricey for me to buy two licenses in my situation. By the way, would the $15 per computer deal today result in a $30 charge for both computers? I see on your website the normal price would be $66.

At any rate, nice software, but the per machine stipulation vs per user will likely draw a pass from me.

Techtoysavvy I bought FolderMatch primarily because of the licensing model. It is very reasonable. I purchased a family license for all my computers but I am the only person who uses it ,,, on multiple machines at home.

I own 3 sync programs and the other 2 have tighter licensing restrictions.
The developers are trying to offer fair licensing for the usage scenario,

I have a question regarding upgrades.
Under the fine print it states "Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free up to the next major version" but on your website under downloads section it states "Upgrade from version 3.4.8 Now for only $16". Please explain...
I purchased a license and a family license in 2012 when it was version 3.69. Is it going to change in the future and you guys update the website and state something like"Upgrade from version 3.82 Now for only $16" It was my understanding that I would receive upgrade thru 3.99.

That's a great question. I can see where that would cause confusion. The backstory for this response is a long one. Let me skip all that and just cut to the short answer. Version 3.5.0 was a major release. The numbering does not reflect that but if you look at the list of changes made on our Version History page you'll see that this is so. We probably should have numbered it 4.0 but chose not to for several internal reasons. I don't foresee that happening again.

Yes and no. You can invoke FolderMatch's folder and file comparison functions via a batch file or script. But the output of the comparison results are not displayed in console mode. The FolderMatch UI is shown with the comparison results displayed.

Are you referring to the Andrew File System? If so, are you asking if there's a version of FolderMatch that will run on the Andrew File System? If that is what you are asking, the answer is No. FolderMatch runs on Windows 7/8/10 only. It expects the drive to be formatted with some version of FAT or NTFS.

Or are you asking if FolderMatch can compare/sync to a second drive with AFS on it?

4) Re: Android

As stated in the previous response, FolderMatch will run only on Windows. There is no Android version.

PortablesFan I saw in an earlier reply that this doesn't have a portable version available, but would just like to put in my vote that you consider such in the future! BeyondCompare--which I've seen mentioned along the way in comments here--supports a portable install, for example.
Will be buying a copy of FM anyway, but as you can guess from my username, here's hoping for this feature to be included down the road!

(Also, another vote against the Ribbon UI, or at least in favor of an option to still use a menu-based UI...)

Bruno Verschraegen Hi there. Me too encountering certificate warning. Bad thing, since Internet explorer cleverly tries to hide the fact that you can still proceed (at own risk) after clicking more info. When doing so, the following appears:
The website’s security certificate is not yet valid or has expired.

Go on to the webpage (not recommended)
Have opened webpage anyway. After clicking download, again same warning appears. Downloaded anyway and now installing because I trust BitsDuJour - but needs fixing.

Whichever way you decide to go, make sure you also get the free license of FolderMatch that BDJ is offering. The two licenses we're talking about (Home and Lifetime) are both optional add-ons to the free license.

George Butel I discovered this program in early 2010, and I don't know how I survived without it before. It is the best Windows utility there is. I'm not a big fan of automatic sync programs, not just because they use resources, but because I don't trust them. I like to see what's being done and I might like to change my options at a whim. This fills the gap for keeping backup folders or drives synchronized. I use it every day You can immediately see what files have changed and you might even notice a couple of files you'd forgotten about.
It also finds duplicates, and has a huge list of options for removal. Even for duplicate finding, it's better than what's on CCleaner or Glary, and it's much better than the freestanding Auslogics free tool and some pay programs that are designed just to find dupes.
You do need to have some familiarity with Windows, though, and pay attention to the options. Also, you have to pay attention to what you just did: if you decide, say, to make the left folder the same as the right, don't forget the next time you run the program to make sure that you're synchronizing the direction you think. (In other words, if, out of habit, you make the right folder you're synchronizing the same as the left, which, for me, is normal, but, on one occasion, you did it the other way around, then you might forget, if you use it all the time, and synchronize the wrong way out of habit the next time--I've done that--since Foldermatch will remember.) Art, you ought to consider adding a button to "restore my defaults" (not just Folder Match's defaults.)

s User Installing in safe mode is definitely not cyber secure and definitely not recommended. I would never do that.

HKP I’m missing the most important feature: When I start the program, I expect to see a view like shown in your first screenshot above. Though, this view appears not until the user has clicked on the compare-button.

I want to see what I’m going to do before I start a command. otherwise a loss of data can easily occur. Therefore, I want to see a tree view after choosing a folder, a partition or an entire hard drive. However, all what your software provides after my choice, is an empty window.

Sorry, but with such a tool it’s impossible to do any serious work.

Stephen Kreyling Install gives an access violation, when you download from there website not a problem, except the registration does not work when you download the software from the manufacture web site?

Constantin Florea @Stephen Kreyling, We've tested the installer and application (from the receipt email) as well as the registration information provided in the receipt email and both work fine. However I have just contacted the vendor asking him to help you in this case.

kurt User I get the meassage:

"The registration name/registration key combination is not valid"

when i try to register with the provided name/key. I have tried several times
and checked for spaces/typos etc.

The registration name and key provided are for FolderMatch v3.7.3. Make sure that is the version you are entering them in.

They will not work in the latest version, v4.2.0 available on the FolderMatch.com site.

You do need to register the software however by entering the freely supplied registration name and key into the program.

Art (Salty Brine Software) @jakobfries - The Home License add-on license does not upgrade your version of FolderMatch. It simply allows you to use your current license on all of your home computers.

So for example, if your license is for version 3.7.3, the Home License add-on allows you to install it on all home computers.

Mr Dave Very odd that you need to buy a "home license upgrade" to install a version from 2016 on another computer, and you don't get the newer version.

I already have 3.7.3. Haven't needed to use it yet but keep it around because if the need arises, this should be a very helpful program. Good to see the company is still around!

Brian W BDJ, Please take the time to be clear what software is being offered. There is no indication that this is an older version and therefore many comments complaining of registration problems.

If you simply stated version 4 in the below list, then all of the confusion would have been avoided. Plus, what is a"Home License" and how is it different from the free offer

"Today's promotion includes the following:
FolderMatch v3.7.3 ($0)
FolderMatch - Home License Upgrade ($19.79)
FolderMatch - Lifetime Upgrade Assurance Plan ($44.96)"

Please also take a moment to delete the fine print that does not apply, such as "Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free up to the next major version. For versions after that, upgrades will require additional payment, which will be discounted." because obviously there won't be any updates to the old version when a newer major version exists.

Also, why not use clear terminology?
Updates: Minor releases up to the next major version.
Upgrades: New major versions.

Susan User To Register the Program:
Look for:
File Options Select View Ordering Information Help ON TOP OVER the icons in the top of the program.NOT under them.
Click on Help (directly over Copy Icon) and click on Enter Registration Key.
Enter both Registration keys you were given in the email.
