What are people saying about FullRecall

Keith Anderson I use Flashcard Exchange. It allows registered users
to export flashcards. There are 7 different formats.
The common ones are csv, tab separated values,
word processor data table and WinFlash.

Is there a converter that can be used for converting
from one of those formats to the Full Recall format?

Right now I'm cutting and pasting or editing the one
of the export files by adding the q /q a /a to
the file. It is a bit time consuming.

I like your product and l like the way it works.

Thanks.

David Calinski FullRecall can import .txt files with tab separated values, the feature is available in menu "File"- "Import/Export" - " Import Questions&Answers From a File To The Queue...".

Keith Anderson Thanks for the quick response.
Unfortunately, that didn't work too well with their formatting.
It didn't like an answer that had more that one line.

I'll keep playing with it.

David Calinski If you could you send me a sample of the Flashcard Exchange csv format (would be great if at least one item will have a multi-line question or answer, and a comma embedded in the question or answer itself) and the sample of their tab-delimited format (a multi-line question and answer appreciated), I can probably do something about it.

Keith Anderson Just to follow up......

David responded quickly with a solution for converting the csv format from Flashcard Exchange in to Full Recall format.
This is a great help and is appreciated.

David Calinski Next FullRecall releases will support importing from CSV format (and that's long-term solution), but in the meantime I created a script that converts from CSV into FullRecall-acepted format; the script is available here: http://fullrecall.com/tmp2

Daniel H Is it possible to translate the GUI of program (both Windows and PocketPC) to another languages? I prefer Czech GUI and I woudl even be willing to do myself and share afterwards.
Mar 22 2010 at 10:22pm Copy Link

David Calinski Not at this moment, sorry. There are plans for adding support of such translations, but they are still on back-burner as I see more important things (for general audience at least) that are waiting for implementation.
There are also other reasons why it's not a high priority:
1. I can't give user-support in languages I don't know
2. FullRecall still targets mostly technical users that generally know English
3. FullRecall is still actively developed and GUI changes; every additional language could add additional burden and delays to every release that alters strings in GUI, or risk that translations are out-of-sync

However, I'm not against translations, regular version (Windows/Linux/MacOSX/FreeBSD) will most likely support the translations eventually, just not yet. And thanks for the offer. I plan to allow many translators to cooperate on Web in something similar to a Wiki, so no single person will have to translate entire GUI.

RichU Hello! My wife has early onset Alzheimer's. I would need to create questions, etc. on my PC, but have her test the questions on her PC.
I would consider trying this program IF just one license would cover my situation.

Thanks,

Mary Wilson I am trying this out and have a few questions. After entring the questions in, does it maintain the same order or does it change the order? Is the only item it imports is text files? I have a lot of vocabulary I need to learn in Excel. Can this be imported? Really wish that this program had a test data base that came with the program.

David Calinski Hello.

Richard:
License is per user (not per computer), so FullRecall can be installed (and unlocked to full version with the paid license) on more than one computer with just one license.

Mary:
Order of items (one question-and-answer is an item) is not remembered in any way. Items are not presented in any particular order, there is even some intentional randomness in presenting the items during reviews to avoid the situation when order is the same as was in a previous session.
However, when a particular order is needed for some items, the items can be "sticked" together: when items are sticked (e.g., item A sticked to item B), every time item A is presented, item B follows it. More than 2 items can be sticked together (there is no upper limit). There is hard-sticking (item B always follows) and soft-sticking (item B follows only if its due to review in next week).
The feature is only available in PC versions (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, Maemo) in "Knowledge Manager" available in "File" menu, by dragging&dropping one item over another. The feature is not yet available in online version, PocketPC version or Android version.

FullRecall can import and export data in CSV format (comma-separated questions-answers), and Excel supports the format too.

Avi S Is anyone equipped to consider a comparison between this software and that of SuperMemo (http://www.supermemo.com/...ctures.htm)?
SuperMemo claims to implement principles of scientific memory research, specifically the trajectories of "memory effect", in order to evaluate which material to bring up for review (see more info here: http://www.supermemo.com/.../kowal.htm). Also, SuperMemo provides very extensive analysis and graphing of the state of one's memory regarding a set of data (see the images half-way down in the first link above).
Is there any info about how FullRecall calculates its algorithms?

Joel Koltner That web page for SuperMemo is kinda scare -- I klinda feel like I'd be constantly forgetting just how to use all of its features! :-)

It does look more sophisticated than FullRecall here... but of course for 4x the price ($60), it should be. I also wouldn't be surprised if, with SuperMemo's added sophistication, fewer users (as a percentage of those who purchase it) actually stick with it than with FullRecall, you know?

tom drake "Is anyone equipped to consider a comparison between this
software and that of SuperMemo "

Scientific study on this would be very expensive and take many years. Besides that there is IMHO no way to really compare, besides very subjective comparisons, or comparisons that only take user interface etc. in account and not the algorithms.

SuperMemo has a proprietary algorithm developed by it's author.
FullRecall implements artificial neural network (ANN), thus it should adjust to you specifically (while I believe I heard the SM algorithm also has some flexibility to it, but ANN is supposed to be more flexible and self-learning.)

SuperMemo's sophistication is not that big deal, you can switch between three or so modes, lightest of them being fairly accessible. Still Fullrecall shines in that aspect - it's still a bit easier to grasp (subjective opinion). Fullrecall's strenght is in support of number of different hardware platforms, Unicode, frequent updates, ....

In the end, both are good programs, it's up to the user to choose one that fits their personality, needs and way of working and thinking.

Eg. I found Fullrecall better in handling Japanese (Unicode) years ago, not sure how the situation is right now.

Aleksey Semenenko Does it work on OS X Lion? When I tried in install it, it gave me this error in a terminal window:

Last login: Wed Sep 28 16:50:53 on ttys000

David Calinski It works on OS X Lion. The fontconfig error can be safely ignored, it still loads when this error is displayed in Terminal.
There is a problem (I was made aware just today) with OS X Lion that it takes some time to start, you will have to be patient.
This is not normal and it will be fixed ASAP.
Normally FullRecall starts very fast, even with very big databases: usually under 1 second on Windows or Linux, about 4-5 seconds on Mac OS X 10.5 due to X11: and once fixed, it should also take no more that 4-5 seconds on Mac OS X 10.6 (Lion).

Mac OS X version uses X11 and displays Terminal window everytime is starts (it's a feature of X11 setup on Mac actually: everytime X11 is started, a terminal also appears), I would love to have a native version eventually, but so far there is only this version for Mac OS X.

BTW - According to SuperMemo's site, their current version does have full unicode support.
Nevertheless, I have purchased FullRecall with the BDJ special, and I look forward to using the product.

govertz Is it possible to retrieve information from the database, asking the right question.
If I of course have stored this information in the database, along with a relevant question.

David Calinski govertz, if you are asking about PC version, then to find an item that is in database, you can use option "Find an item" (available in "Edit” menu) – after picking it up, type a part of the question (or answer) that you want to find in the question-field and press "Find" on the right (or press “Enter” on keyboard) and all items that match the typed string will be listed. If this is not what you asked (or you are asking about a different version), please let me know and please specify a version.

Warren Russell I'm confused. The BDJ page shows a discount of 69% and a price of $9.00 and says I have 4 hours and 40 minutes left for the deal, but when I click on "Buy Now", it shows me a discount of only 20% and a price or $23.20!

If this issue can be resolved, will all the versions sync? I want to be able to use the PC, Android, and online versions and understand that a single license will cover all of them, but will my progress be maintained in each one?
May 16 2012 at 2:27am Copy Link
0
David Calinski Warren,
the discount of 69% was for 24 hours only and it ended about hour ago, sorry. The regular (day-to-day) discount for FullRecall on BDJ is 20%.

All the versions are compatible with each other and can sync your database with each other (provided you have the connection the the Internet without any firewall). Single license covers them all. The syncing can optionally be set to auto-sync on start and on exit of the program, so you don't even need to remember to sync progress between them manually.

Warren Russell OK, thank you, David. I was having computer problems and guess I missed it. One way to look at it is that I just saved $9. :-)

It's showing the 20% discount now; I wonder why the display was incorrect earlier.
