What are people saying about GetFolder

Jagadesan Ganesan Sir,
This is v. rajaganapthi. I used getFolder in my system. It's so easy to search the particular file on folder.

Jagadesan Ganesan Genie au Travail,

GetFolder could not install java for some reason. Probably, there was a file permission problem. You have correctly diagnosed and installed java. Thank you. Now please delete c:\getFolder and run the
GetFolderSetup.exe again. It will reinstall and initiate indexing.

Thanks

Jagadesan Ganesan Thanks.
GetFolder has been especially designed for non-computer savy users, who have a lot of need to navigate through folders.
We are open to suggestions.

Jason Howard Does it offer any advantages over the excellent "Everything" (Freeware) from http://voidtools.com ? The main features seem to be the same, just "GetFolder" doesn't feel (or look) quite as robust.

Also it seems that the reindexing is triggered only by a time interval (eg. Every 30 minutes), whereas "Everything" updates it's index/database in real time as changes are made to the file system.

Jagadesan Ganesan The main difference is in search experience. It is interative. As you type each character, GetFolder tries to understand the user's intent and progressively converges to the folder.
What you type can be a substring in the middle of a word too.

H. H. Hallo,
1. please give a step-by-step instruction, telling all software (java) and exact pathes for getting your software to work. I´m running windows xp sp3 and get the same problems as described above , but although trying the above solution still didn´t get your software working

2. for users, which are running in problems with getfolder too and would like a more robus similiar software "folderscout" (http://www.folderscout.com/) seems to be a good and versatile alternative. I bought it a few months ago and until now it always worked properly - offering folder search. recent folders, recents files and setting favourites (perhaps bdj may offer it in the future??)
to author of getfolder: or is there anything folderscout can´t do in comparison to getfolder (could not test it, because getfolder still doesn´t work on my machine)

with kind regards
H.H.

Jason Howard Jagadesan, actually all of the different features you mention between Everything and GetFolder - are actually the same.

Some suggestions though - take a look at the indexing routine - I'm used to about 3 minutes to start and complete an index. GetFolder has been building the index for over an hour so far - and still running. I've got no idea how far it has progressed - because there is no feedback. If I knew what folder it was up to and could see the progress then I would know if it is worth waiting for, or time to kill the program.

Reading through the documentation - I have a few suggestions:

1. Hotkey to launch "Get Folder is Ctrl-Alt-A". What if that hotkey is already being used. There is no facility to change the hotkey.

2. Editing config files to program settings instead of letting a user do it from the GUI to me says the program isn't aimed at the novice user, or the developer just hasn't got around to putting in an options screen - The text editor approach is great for programmers and geeks - but not great for average users.

3. Most worrying - The problems running a java app on various user pc's should be resolved during installation - extensive checking for requirements and pathnames allowing for non-standard installs.

As far as "what it does right", the setup program failed to impress. Just dumps everything into C:\GetFolder without asking. What if Java was installed in a non-standard location? I realise it makes the programmers job easier, not having to worry about handling custom file locations (like with "folderstart.bat") but plenty of users are pretty firm on where software should be installed - and for certain are many companies.

While I'm typing this - I've had a Java - "out of memory error" - but nothing from GetFolder - it just vanished (something else to add, error handling).

I dug out a log file from the GetFolder folder:

Launched appliation Fri Jun 24 22:43:04 EST 2011
IOException in buildOrReBuildDirDb() java.nio.channels.ClosedChannelException
Indexing Folders End Sat Jun 25 00:06:25 EST 2011
Saving Folders Begin Sat Jun 25 00:06:25 EST 2011
Loaded Database

I really think there is a lot of work remaining to be done before GetFolder is a viable alternative to some other programs that perform the same function, only much better.

Nick Katz Yes Patrick, that's what I'm running also. I guess it just won't run on a 64-bit system.
I did download and install "Everything" that Jason Howard suggested in an earlier post above, and it seems to work pretty well and it's free.

Jason Howard Out of curiosity, I decided to see if GetFolders could complete a reindex of my PC (Win7 32bit) - with nothing else running on it - I closed down all other programs and apps running in the system tray - and just let it go...

Here is the C:\GetFolders\Log.txt

Launched appliation Sun Jun 26 09:30:17 EST 2011
Indexing Folders Begin Sun Jun 26 09:30:24 EST 2011
Indexing drive C:\
Indexing drive D:\
Indexing drive E:\
Indexing Folders End Sun Jun 26 10:52:55 EST 2011
Loaded Database
Saving Folders Begin Sun Jun 26 10:52:55 EST 2011
written to searchDb\subStringSearch\dirSearchDatabase\directoryArray
written to searchDb\subStringSearch\dirSearchDatabase\dirSubstringTree
saved DirPostingList
Saving Folders End Sun Jun 26 11:45:01 EST 2011
---
so it started at 9.30am and finished at 11.45am - then I was ready to do my first folder lookup...

except - it began a reindex 45 minutes later - so again the program says "Indexing. Please wait..." (You can't use the program while it is indexing or reindexing).

ReIndexing Folders Sun Jun 26 12:30:16 EST 2011
Indexing Folders Begin Sun Jun 26 12:30:16 EST 2011
Indexing drive C:\
Indexing drive D:\
Indexing drive E:\

So about 45 minutes later it still hasn't completed "Reindexing".

Even while GetFolders was reindexing - I started "Everything" and got it to reindex. In 90 seconds it reindexed Drives C, D, E, L and W (The last two are external USB drives - an additional 850GB).

If GetFolders wasn't running, Everything would've probably been faster still.

I'm sorry, but GetFolders looks like a very early prototype of a reinvention of the wheel - with just lots of corners that need to be rounded off.

Do yourself a favour visit voidtools.com and try out the Freeware "Everything" - it is everything GetFolders dreams of being - and the design, performance and results are already polished and working great.

Nick Katz "Everything" is very fast. I have a 1TB internal drive and two large external USB drives both with two partitions and it indexed all of it in just a few seconds. The search is pretty much instantaneous also. Thanks for the recommendation Jason.

H. H: Hallo,
1. no comment / answer from the author??
2a). regarding the really good search- utility "everything"
one should be aware, that "everything" does not search files and folders on non-ntfs volumes, e.g. it would not find data at fat/fat32 formatted usb-sticks, sd-cards, mp3-players or harddisks.
b)for people which are looking for fast folder-search / access, also working with fat formatted volumes I personally can recommend folder scout
(trial version at "http://www.folderscout.com").
I bought this prgram a few months ago and I really won´t miss it any more.
with kind regards
H.H.
