What are people saying about GTD Timer 2015 Professional

H. H: Hallo,
the following question occurs during testing GTD Tmer:
is there a possibility to change the background colour of the timer window (not only the fonts or the background of the tray icon).
This would make it much easier to work with, when running several timers, than only distinguishing by title
If not - will this feature be implemented in the near future?
Thank you for answering soonly in advance
with kind regards
H.H.

Vyacheslav Koldovskyy Hello H.H.,

Thanks for questioning, this feature is planned for future release (GTD Timer 2011) which is expected by end of the year. In the new release presets will allow to create fully color-distinguishable instances. Also expect some other cool features to be implemented.

Since GTD Timer 2011 is expected to launch in a few months, all buyers of current promotion are eligible for FREE UPGRADE (by default our users get free upgrades within a year from purchase).

Thanks!

Harald Vogel Hello,

I want to use GTD-Timer on my PC and on my Notebook. I'm the only user and it's only for private use. Do I need the Home or Pro license?

Thanks

Vyacheslav Koldovskyy Dear Harald,

According to our licensing terms, each computer requires separate license. So, you need two home licenses for your needs ($12.49x2 = $24.98). But for today we have a 50% discount for our "Professional plus Home" license too. With discounted price of  $19.99 it allows you to install the software on one personal computer plus one ANY computer (doesn't matter if it is used for business needs or not). So, this license is better than two separate home licenses and is cheaper too.

Thanks!

Harald Vogel Dear Vyacheslav,

thank you for your anwer. I misunderstood the "transfer of a license to another owned computer" as allowed to use on a second PC for if I'm the only user.

I also have a problem with how I'm treated as a customer: No discount for an upgrade? but kind of upgrade protection if I pay for up to 5 years. I fall in that trap once, paid 3x the normal price for 5 year upgrades but the promised features were never implemented. All I got was a minor upgrade with bugfixes after 3 month and after two years the software was abandoned. Makes me still mad! So I will pass on this one even it sounds great but as I paying customer I want to be treated fair!

Regards,
Harald

Vyacheslav Koldovskyy Dear Harald, Most software companies (including us) allow license transfer from one computer to another by uninstalling software on one computer and installing for another. It is applicable for GTD Timer too but not useful if you have two computers and work on them every day. Upgrade is free withing a year from a purchase. Currently we have upgrade protection scheme for a period of up to 5 years. I understand your opinion and we'll for sure replace or complement it with upgrade discount policy. Moreover, I can tell your for a secret that every current customer who asked us about an upgrade discount, got it. :)   About implementing new features - all companies as all people are different. So you can't be sure about future releases for any product. Talking about GTD Timer - this software is developed mostly "user-driven way". Our customers (even potential) provide us ideas about new features and we implement them. That's how every greatest product should be developed. So, be sure about upgrade discounts - go for one-year license and you'll get a significant discount for any future release. Also provide us with ideas about new features in the software and we'll be happy to make them happen. Thanks!

Harald Vogel Dear Vyacheslav,

thank you for your answer and sorry for kind of blaming you for my negative experience. I tested your software since it was previewed and really liked it and it is exactly what I was looking for. And with your mentioned upgrade discount I asked a friend with a credit card to get it for me. I'm sure I will came up with some ideas in the future!

Vyacheslav Koldovskyy Dear Harald,

Thank you for your positive feedback and looking forward to see you as our customer. I'll be very thankful to get ideas from you to make our software better. Sometimes it is very confusing to hear from customers in a response to question what they want in new version something like "leave all as it is".

Best regards,

Dan B4 For implementing GTD you can use this web-based application:   http://Gtdagenda.com Gtdagenda.com   You can use it to manage your goals, projects and tasks, set next actions and contexts, use checklists, schedules and a calendar. Comes with a mobile version too, and with an Android app.

Vyacheslav Koldovskyy Hello Harald,

sorry for disappointing, our plans changed, we decided to skip GTD Timer 2011 version and just make some improvements to the previous one (it has been updated on the official site).
But there are good news - we just finished work on GTD Timer 2012 and will start selling it with BitsDuJour promotion! Also everyone who bought previous version 10 month ago will receive free upgrade (including people who bought the licence not later than a year ago)!
Most changes to GTD Timer 2012 are inspired by our customers. For example, the idea to color timer's windows came from here. The software is much more customizable and easier to use now.

Michael R. Sometimes the is a internet-event with a given date/time in another timezone (e.g. PST, CST, ...). It would be great, if it would be possible to be able to enter this date/time and GTD would calculate the days/hours/mins/secs to this date and display a timer accordingly.

Also it would be great to be able to enter more than one countdown-times and GTD would display only those which are less than a certain number of hours left, e.g. 24 hours (and indeally ordered by time-left).

Can GDT do this?

Vyacheslav Koldovskyy Hello Michael,

thank you for suggesting entering time in different timezones. It's an excellent idea and is easy to implement. So we'll definitely make it happen in GTD Timer 2012 soon.

What about second idea - you currently can run as many timers as you want simultaneously. But they are running as different instances and not interacting with each other. Maybe we can add a feature on a preset level that will pop-up timer's window if some defined by user amount of time left? It's won't be difficult to implement and we can make it happen soon too.

Thank you!

Michael K You are offering the updated GTD 2012 here but when I went to download the demo from your website it only offered the 2010 version Release 5.

Is it possible for you to make the 2012 demo version available on your website so we can try it before buying here.

Thanks

Vyacheslav Koldovskyy I am pleased to announce that GTD Timer 2012 is just released! Go and download it from the official site: http://gtd-timer.com.

List of changes and new features:
- Start Timer window has been redesigned to allow time entering using mouse buttons and wheel. This simplifies and speedups starting timer.
- User may setup Timer Window background color on a preset level. Now some predefined presets have custom background colors by default.
- Added new display mode for Timer Window called ‘Ghost Mode’. When in this mode, GTD Timer displays itself in topmost semi-transparent window which does not intercept mouse clicks. This allows showing GTD Timer 2012 over other windows in transparent to user interaction way. To turn off this mode, access notification area (System Tray) icon menu.
- New default alert sound is included. Now it is possible to adjust GTD Timer sound level using system Volume Mixer. You may return to old sound via preset settings.
- It is possible now to display alert message box (configured on preset level). This feature prevents you from missing important alert.
- Included new predefined preset called ‘Max Alert’ which displays message box and plays loud buzzer sound. You may use included buzzer sound for any other preset.
- Now presets are referred by captions, not by numbers. This helps to reorder them without risk to lose quick access presets links and simplifies runs from command line.
- Solved problem with high CPU usage on some slow systems. Now GTD Timer requires much less system resources to run (up to ten times less CPU).
- When in ‘On Top’ and ‘Ghost’ modes GTD Timer is not visible in Alt-Tab menu. Accessible only via notification area icon menu.
When GTD Timer is started first preset settings applied automatically. Configure first preset to get desirable configuration ready to start with one click.
- Now first Default preset has preconfigured time of 10 minutes.
- Many minor changes and fixes.

Feel free to report any issues to support e-mail, we'll be monitoring it constantly and will react fast.

Michael K Hi Vyacheslav,

Thanks for the notice above and Ihave downloaded the 2012 Demo - I hit a snag which I've emailed you about and once resolved will post again here.

My initial observation is that there does not seem to be any instruction manual and I personally think that it makes it harder to understand the features fully and how it can be best used and the customization possibilities.

Is there any chance of you putting some notes together for those of us who like something to read that allows us to get the best from your software?

Thanks

Michael

Vyacheslav Koldovskyy Dear Michael,

Thank you for reporting an issue. We've already fixed it and updated installer on the website. I've responded to your e-mail 15 minutes ago. You may download and reinstall the software.

There is an instruction manual installed as .chm help file together with the software. Available as 'User Manual' link in Start Menu folder or on F1 press inside the software. Also it is mostly represented on the website in section 'More Info'.

Today we just launched heavy updated release. So it may contain some issues. Please report them to support e-mail, we'll react fast.

Michael K Hi Vyacheslav,

You fixed the glitch I reported so quickly that I did not have time to set the countdown timer - Thank you!

And thanks also for pointing out that there is a manual which I've now found - silly me for not looking harder .

The custom timer I was having a problem with is now working fine and it a pleasure to be dealing with a developer as responsive as you are.

Thanks

Michael

Vyacheslav Koldovskyy You can use *any* command line which is supported in your version of Windows including any third-party tools and utilities you have installed. Commands do not depend on GTD Timer itself, we just provided some examples. Since I am personally hardcore command-line user since DOS I don't even know how to suggest where to start learning command line. :)

In general, any application in windows can be called from command line. Many of them support parameters. To run, for example, MS Word you need to run command "winword" (assuming that path to it is set in system environment variable "Path"). If you want to open MS Word document you may just run "winword" command with parameter - document name. Each application support its own set of parameters, very often it is available via "/?" or "/help" parameter.

I suggest you to google for "how to use command prompt" - first link in search results seems to have quite comprehensive tutorial. GTD Timer itself support any of such commands.

You may ask for some specific tasks you need to run on timer completion. I'll try to show how to do it with command line and add this examples to website and documentation.

Michael K Hi Vyacheslav,

I just clicked on the 'Buy Now' and it came up with various buying options including a 'Home" version - what is the home version and why would one need that as well as the Professional version.?

I did not find any reference to the home version on your website either.

Thanks

Vyacheslav Koldovskyy Hi Michael,
the difference between licences described on the official website on 'Order' page. They are identical by features but have differences in permissions to use:
Home - only one personal computer for non-business use, Professional - one PC without any limitations,
Home plus Professional - one PC with Home license and one with Professional.

Thank you for your interest, we'll be happy to see you among our customers!

Jeremiah Stover I looked through the documentation on the site and couldn't find a couple of things that would be helpful to me, however do note that they may not fit with the 'purpose' of your project.

It would be nice to go even further transparent (higher percentage) so it is possible to read text behind the window (max seems to be about 70% right now).

it would be very nice if the timer would log its runs to a text file (and timestamp start and stop and pause times)

if would be very nice to be able to have more than one timer up on screen at a time so one could be paused and another running - making it easier for those of us that multi-task but still want to track individual entries and want the blocks of time function 90% of the time.

Along that line it would be nice if you could set an optional rule whereby if set when one entry was started it paused all others (or better yet all others in a specific grouping)

Along similar lines to the previous - it could be nice if one could dock a set of timers to the side of the screen - this would allow them to auto-hide if user so desired - maybe even allow the active entry to show on screen when docking was active.

Vyacheslav Koldovskyy Dear Jeremiah,

GTD Timer 2012 is quite mature app and it covers almost any scenario when anyone requires software alert clock including most of suggestions that you are offering.

Transparency percentage is set in 'General tab' of settings window (though it requires software to restart but soon we will change this to apply immediately ).

Next, logging is possible via command line actions. Just add command "ECHO" with parameters "%DATE% %TIME% c:\timer.log" to action's 'Execute command' tab and this will log each time timer runs.

You can run multiple timers, display them on screen and stop/pause them without any limitations.

You may implement grouping of timers using "ID" command line option (described in user manual).

You may group timers using window background and tray icon colors assigned on preset level (though docking of multiple windows at once is not supported). You may keep windows in Ghost mode which does not interfere with user input to other windows or leave only tray icon.

We are open to ideas and suggestions, please send us descriptions of usage scenarios when you need to add some features to GTD Timer and they are likely to be happen in future releases. But at the same time we need to choose features very carefully because overwhelming software with features not directly required for it can transform it to bloatware. For example, I
am guessing that features that you've described are more common for time-tracking software which is somewhat more different that timers and alarm clocks. We are working on software in such area too, so stay tuned for news from Productivity Scientific.

Thank you!

HJ B The manual indicates that multiple instances of the timer can be run at one time. When I tried to do that, a new instance opened, but it replaced the running instance.

If, for example, I am running the two-minute timer, how can I quickly:

a) start a second two-minute timer running?;
b) start some other other option such as pomdoro?.

Thanks
Jul 9 2011 at 1:34pm Copy Link

Vyacheslav Koldovskyy If you run another instance of the app it will create new windows with completely new timer. Use shortcuts to run Pomodoro and Two-minute rule quickly

HJ B Thank you, I see that now.

It should be noted that if you run a second instance, it places itself precisely on top of the first instance. I suggest that it would be helpful if multiple instances were smart enough to line up next to each other, or at least such an option would be good to have.
Jul 9 2011 at 2:37pm Copy Link
0
Vyacheslav Koldovskyy OK, we'll think about it. Maybe it's a matter of time to get used to such behavior of the software? It's not so difficult to make it smart enough to open window each time in another place but it may confuse users, especially if they moved/hidden some other windows.
Productivity Scientific - Jul 9 2011 at 3:13pm Copy Link
0
HJ B It could be at the option of the user.
When a timer completely covers another timer, the practical effect is that you have no display at all on the covered timer. What is the point of that? The covered timer does not even show itself when the time is up. You hear an alarm, but you see the top timer that is still running.

Of course, it becomes even more complicated if there are more than two timers going.

K X I like that GTD 2 minute rule and Pomodoro Method are both in this program as pre-sets since that's what I use computer timers for primarily throughout the day.

My preference is to not see a countdown on the screen most of the time, so I would minimize the timer to the tray, and focus on work until I see the popup message when the 2 minutes or 25 minutes or 5 minutes are up. Animated graphics are distracting to me while working, even if it's tiny numbers in the Windows notification area.

So I would really like to see an option of having a static icon in the Windows notification area instead of the numbers counting down. That would be better for me, and I could still be able to find out the current countdown time by hovering the mouse over the icon and reading the box with the Time, Preset, and Message text.

Is that a feature you could add to the program?
Jul 9 2011 at 7:43pm Copy Link
0
Vyacheslav Koldovskyy OK, HJ B, we'll take that into account. Indeed, there is no reason in covering windows each other but there is a reason to have window on the same place when you start an app.

To K X: it's really not a problem to stop animating tray icon. But we have not received such requests yet and I am personally not sure if such tiny icon could be a source of distraction. You may hide it at all using Windows standard features. Anyway, if you bought a license, you can contact customer support e-mail with a feature request and we'll make it for you.

Thank you all for suggestions and feedback, we appreciate that!

K X Thanks. I bought the Home plus Pro license to use the program on two computers. I'll send you an email.

I really like that this program has the Pomodoro Technique settings built-in. Derek in the description should mention this, or it should possibly even in the name of the program, because right now (at least on this sales page) it's a hidden (but significant) feature. I don't even think it's listed in the features tab on this page.

I first heard about the program here on Bits, and I downloaded the demo to try it as a GTD Timer, but only after installiing it, did I discover the Pomodoro pre-sets, which became an even bigger selling point for me, the feature for which I bought the program.

For anyone who uses the Pomodoro Technique, what's so useful about this timer is that it has pre-set buttons A and B for 25 minute work and 5 minute break timers.

But even more appealing is that when the 25 minute work timer ends, the 5 minute break timer starts automatically. And vice versa.

HJ B KX,

My point is that I would like not to have to be concerned with moving and minimizing. Of course, there will be times where one wishes to minimize, but it is important for me to have the timers showing. If I am keeping track of time spent on project A, and I am interrupted by something on project B, I don't want to have to maximize and then pause project A, etc.

If an instance is running and another instance is started, the application ought know that an instance is running, and put the new instance to the left or right or top or bottom of the older instance, according to the preferences set by the user.

Another thing I would like is if I could name a series of clocks after one's clients or projects. At the end of a time run, the application would automatically file to the client's file a running tally of the time, excluding pauses, that was expended for the client. At that point, or at any later point, I would be able to make a note to that time record showing what was actually done. When I would want the client's clock to start running, a keyboard sequence would display the list of clients or projects, and clicking on that item would start its clock running.

K X HJ B,

I think the scope of this program is more limited than what you are trying to do with it. Vyacheslav can let us know if he has plans to add the more complex time tracking you're requesting. I think that there are other programs out there that already do what you're asking for and would better fit your needs.
Jul 10 2011 at 4:31pm Copy Link

HJ B KX,

I am aware that there are many time and billing programs. I am actually describing a relatively simple version, no other bells and whistles, only record keeping of the use of the timer, with the ability to automatically assign the record of time to a particular project or client, depending upon which pre-set timer you use.

The data could then be exported to a spread sheet or a database that would make any calculations or analysis that one chooses. Or it can just be used to give you a sense how you are using your time.
Jul 10 2011 at 5:45pm Copy Link

Vyacheslav Koldovskyy Thank you for all your comments and suggestions! The original purpose of the GTD Timer is limited mostly 'keeping on track' futures which two-minute rule and Pomodoro are. But it's not the first time when we received request to add time-logging functions to it, so we've decided to add them in next versions (say 2012 R2) which will be available for users of current release for free.

But there will be an alternative. Currently we are working on ambitious and innovative project called "WinClarity". I'd like not to spoil much now but this tool will bring tag-based virtual desktops which you could assign to your projects and clients and keep track of them just switching between desktops. You won't have to pause timers to get time counted. And 'tag-based' means that you can assign one window to multiple desktops, so you don't have to move them from one desktop to another. There will be another interesting and even unique to the market features to bring clarity to your work with multiple windows and projects (GTD Timer's 2012 Ghost mode is one of them).
So stay tuned, I think I'll try to bring that software to BitsDuJour just after release which is planned to this autumn.
