What are people saying about GumNotes

_*_ I am not sure if I am missing something with this program. I downloaded the demo and opened a webpage and added a note, but the note did not "stick" to the page it was labeled as a private note, and never attached to the page. I never figured out how to do it exactly, so I uninstalled.

Not sure what I was suppose to do to make it work properly.

Silat I have been "trying" to get this to work correctly for years and sadly cannot.
And I noticed that since I started trying it has not been updated.
Is Bits sometimes becoming the burial place for dead software?

John H 1- Where exactly is the data for each note stored?

2- Will it work across files stored and synced on Drop Box?

3- And will each computer synced with Drop Box require the software to be installed?

Thank You for your response.

H. H. Hallo,
I just tried gumnotes and have to say, that the idea may be fine, but the practise is not sufficient:
Ít seems that GumNotes does not keep track of renaming a file, so the combination file-attached note is lost when renamig.
But even worse: If I create a file "trial.txt" with a sticky note and save it under "my documents" and also create a not with the same name (trial.txt) and save it in annother folder (e.g. my music) the note that was attachhed to te first file is also shown when opening the second file in another folder, evenn if oe never had attached it - not really something helpful
And if one attaches a note to the second "trial.txt" file it also is automatically combined with the first "trial.txt" file in the other folder.
That´s more confusing than useful. As long as these difficulties are not solved properly it´s no deal.
Perhaps you may consider improvements
with kind regards
H.H.

Tazzie An alternative is to use Notezilla
http://www.bitsdujour.com...notezilla/

With Notezilla you can resize notes and customize them, then you can attach a note to a webpage or a document or folder. You can also roll up the notes so as to stay out of the way until you need to use them. Very handy program and one of my must-haves.

MK Works for me - no reboot needed.
It would be better if GumNotes could capture the file's folder name as well as filename so that it could differentiate between different files that have the same file name.
There's a bit of additional manual work if you want to directly link a file to a note, but get the free CopyFilePath to help make life easier:
http://www.copyfilepath.com/

For me, I have lots of different project files that are work-in-progress, and I can make GumNotes the basis for keeping and/ or sharing to-do lists for each file.
All-in-all, GumNotes needs more development, but is a very useful utility as it stands.

Ralph Bressler I planned to use this program for my own personal use. Their website says the price for this kind of use is $0. I would be glad to support a small developer but I am having some of the same problems that others mentioned above. The developer is in Germany where, I believe, it is afternoon, yet none on the comments from yesterday or today have been addressed. I think the limitations of the program, the lack of development and the developer's lack of interest will make most people shy away from purchasing this program.

Stephen Cohen Installed on Win XP Sp3 laptop. Tried adding a note following the instructions in the help file. It would not let me type anything into the note area. Worthless. Removed using GoBack.

A K I already have this installed. I thought it was free.
I tested it after installation and it kind of worked. But the same note would appear if another document, containing the same word, was opened. Haven't really used it since, though it's there at 'StartUp' in 'SysTray', probably because of this behaviour. Current tests, whilst writing this comment, haven't produced this behaviour, though.

I've had Bookmark Docs for some time now, although haven't used it that much. It works well, and can reopen precise locations within a document. It works with folders, too, not only documents.
BD is not really a 'sticky notes' programme, one can write notes along with each bookmark, they aren't 'stuck' to the location referred to, though.

Notezilla sounds interesting.

GumNotes is an attractive application, and I'm sure it will prove useful. There might be some problems, but it is useful as it is.
Also, it is free for personal use. Thank you to GN team.
Will have to start using BD and GN more.

Steven Avery Hi,

Notezilla and Stickies are not too smart about web pages and domains (you want some flexibility as to what exactly should stick). They are, in my experience, better when you want general Windows stickum or sticking to an app.

Internote, a Firefox extension, is pretty decent in sticking to a webpage or domain or subdomain. The notes themselves are not as strong, but page sticking is the story there.

The whole genre is not handled very well by just about anybody, you might also check programs like CintaNotes and MyBase to see how well they stick to web pages.

For page stickum, I still like Internote, but I am a Firefox person, not sure about Opera and I heard Microsoft has a browser too, not sure where Internote works.

A K @Steven Avery

I have CintaNotes installed, but haven't used it for awhile. It's a
note-taking application, though, which can save text from webpages, along with automatic retention of the URLs. QuotePad is similar.
MyBase is a database that can save webpages, along with other types of data, but I'm not aware of its having any notational 'adherence' to webpages, as it were.
I have Ultra Recall Pro, which is similar to MyBase.

I don't need to post notes to webpages. If a webpage is signficant, I save it, with one of three programmes, ScrapBook, Ultra Recall Pro, or Zotero. Or I bookmark it.

Where the sticky note might come in useful for me, is for files devoid of sufficient metadata, especially programme setup files, that require an adequate, specifying, identification.
Documents, too, but am using Zotero more intensively now, so have gotten in the habit of collecting bibliographical data for everything.

I haven't come across InterNote, though I do use FF. QuickFoxNotes is pretty good.

Steven Avery Hi,

And I always bookmark important pages in Linkman. However when I call forth a page (e.g. from Xerpi, my designed home page) the idea that my previous note can come up with the page can be helpful. Your note does not get buried.

For that Internote works quite well.

QuickFoxNotes looks like it is more a Treepad-Rightnote-Keynote type of idea.

I agree that organisation varies, and Sticky notes can be problematic because they are so ad hoc, but sometimes they really do .. work.

A K QuickFoxNotes has plugins, too. I find myself using it for search terms, temporary jottings which might be developed further, a catch-all for text one produces and/or processes whilst doing web research. This has happened quite naturally, it's ease of access and flexibility have helped this unexpected incorporation into my workflow.

I've got Linkman Pro, too. I haven't really incorporated it into my workflow yet. I realise that it's probably the best way of dealing with links, but am entrenched in FF's Bookmark manager, refracted into two toolbars by the 'Incredible Bookmarks' extension, though I don't use IB's other functions, really. This is what I've grown used to. I can see the advantages to LMPro, but incorporating it into workflow requires effort.
