John Terdik Hard Disk Sentinel is a must have utility. I've been using it for several years and it has prevented disaster for me several times by giving me early warning for a failing drive.

Ed Stoddard I recently downloaded a trial copy of Hard Disk Sentinel Pro and it showed that my hard drive had ONLY 4% health left, which meant it could die anytime. I tested the hard drives (3) in my other computer and they all tested healthy. So, since the first computer was my primary and the drive was about give up its life, according to HD Sentinel, I ordered an SSD to replace it with, thinking I would be able to clone it before my HD died.

Nope! After learning that the HD would not last long I setup TuneUp Utilities 2014 to run its Disk Doctor application to check for bad sectors and fix problems during a pre-boot scan. Unfortunately, the hard drive at this point was so messed up that the boot-scan would not complete and no matter what I did I could not get back into Windows. So, when the SSD came I had to do a new installation from the boot disk I created when I first upgraded to Windows 8 Pro 64-bit from Vista Ultimate 64-bit. I was able to access my data on my dying HD when used as a slave drive, and eventually got it all onto my new SSD. I did have to make a call to Microsoft to get Win 8 Pro activated again, but that went very smoothly, and actually didn't take much time.

My point is that Hard Disk Sentinel works! It alerted me to an emanate HD failure on my primary computer. If I had, had Hard Disk Sentinel installed earlier, I would have known this was coming and could have prepared for it much sooner. As it turned out I had just downloaded the trail version to see how my HD was doing, and I was really surprised to learn it was on it's last leg.

Hard Disk Sentinel is well for the few dollars one has to pay to have the ability KNOW the health of their hard drive before it goes bad! If you know in advance that your hard drive's health is diminishing, you can do backups and plan for a replacement drive. Without Hard Disk Sentinel you only know when your hard drive dies or starts doing very crazy things that you might think are caused by other hardware.

I ordered the Hard Disk Sentinel Professional Family version so I can easily check all my kids computers, too, using the USB portable version.

Glad to hear that it was possible to get the data from the hard disk at that point and this way the data loss could be avoided.

Just a tip: Hard Disk Sentinel offers numerous tests to diagnose the hard disks (in addition to the constant monitoring and error-reporting) - so they can be used any time to verify the situaiton, reveal and fix possible problems.

James Snead I believe I ordered the Professional Family License on 6/1/14 from a previous 5/31/14 BitsDuJur promotion. My credit card was billed on 6/1/14 through DRI. I did not receive any order confirmation, download, or activation codes. I already have a single user license.

I pass through them twice and they ask me to wait 12 hours and then ask me to choose another mode of payment.

Janos Mathe Yes, Hard Disk Sentinel Professional version offers different tests to both reveal new problems and also to repair hard disk issues.
These tests in Hard Disk Sentinel Professional forces the hard disk to examine the hard disk surface and reallocate problematic sectors (if required), so replace them with the spare area to improve usability.
Also these tests helps lots in fixing "bad sectors" reported by chkdsk (which are usually not real bad sectors).

Janos Mathe Of course if hard disks are completely dead (can't be detected at all, can't spin up or so) then no software can help - as no software can replace the damaged components.
It is better to avoid this: with the constant monitoring and tests, it is better to reveal issues long before they can lead to failure and complete data loss.

Dirk Coleman I can't say enough how many times this software has saved me from losing data off drives that were beginning to fail that I would never have noticed without Hard Disk Sentinel Professional. It will let you know when sectors start appearing that are bad and if the number keep growing. It gives me time to get the data off of the HD on to another. I do have backups but it is so much easier to move to another drive.
I have rescued a couple of drives with the included tests and initialization versions but inevitably they end up failing anyway. I use those disks for temporary storage of unimportant items until they fail.

Janos Mathe Hard Disk Sentinel Pro Family license can be used on up to 5 computers at any given time, for unlimited time and with lifetime free updates to all future versions.

If any of the PCs replaced, the license can be moved to new system of course, the only requirements is that at any given time, it should be used on up to 5 systems.

Chris Roy Jackson Was there a Change in the Registration Keys from Version 4.50 to Version 5.xx ???
I purchased my SECOND Pro Family Lifetime License a on August 16, 2012 HERE (See my Comment above.) and my FIRST License in November, 2011.
The latest Version (5.40) is Not recognizing My Registration Key. I get an error message when trying to Load it that says to "...Contact the Developer about your License".
Version 4.50 was the Last version I was using (More than 2 years ago when I changed Laptops). So Actually I have TWO (2) Family Pro Licenses (does that mean I have TWO Keys??? ...or is My Single Key Authorized for 10 PCs ???

Janos Mathe No, there are no changes.
If you ordered the lifetime license code (which grants free updates to all future versions), then of course it should work with all new, updated versions too.

Please proceed the registration and activation as you may did originally:

To use the latest possible licensed version, download Hard Disk Sentinel Professional 5.40 version from the Download page

or directly from https://www.harddisksenti..._setup.zip

After installation, to register and activate your product please click on "Help" and select "Enter registration key" in Hard Disk Sentinel Pro.

Please enter your name (or nickname) as username, the license code you received (15 digit number) and click on the "Register and activate on-line" button.
Then the software should be registered and activated and can be used without limitations.
Make sure that the software need to access the activation server during the activation, so your firewall should not block it.

You wrote that you tried to "load it". Not sure, but if you attempted to load a previous activated file (which related to the previous installation) then it is completely normal and expected that it does not work on a new installation (as described in the Help).

If you encounter troubles with the license code, please send in e-mail to info (at) hdsentinel (dot) com so it is possible to check what happened (for example maybe if used too many times and the server may temporary blocked it).

Janos Mathe Yes, if you have 2 x Hard Disk Sentinel Pro Family license codes, then each can be used to register and activate the software on 5+5 computers (on a total of 10).
But if you try to use one license code on 10 system, it will not work, the result is that the license code will be blocked.

Please notice that it is possible that for some countries there is VAT added to the discounted price meaning the discounted price will be bigger. Indeed, you are correct, the 50% discount was shown but that is because some days ago we ran a promotion for this product and after that promotion ended, we missed updating the discounts back to the current values in time even though the vendor did let us know about it.

Hope you don't mind me asking, but can I buy a used hard drive and then run tests on it to check if it is in good shape? Like maybe let it run for 12 hours or something where it can get tested, and then your software will monitor that and give a performance rating or something?

Or, is there a way to format a new drive and run tests on it -- in one step -- where I will know that the used drive that I bought is ready to go and in good shape?

Please do reply, because I'm a student and would like to buy somethign liek this.

Master User I have used this software since I first helped test it in its earliest stages, and I have depended on it ever since. It is no lie that it has literally saved my data from total loss by sounding the alarm at the pre-aet 10 minute timer, giving me just enough time to do a massive drive-to-drive transfer, knowing that the drive I was transferring it to was checked and good.
