What are people saying about Hard Disk Sentinel Professional Family

Albert C. HI! I bought this one in last August's promotion here @ BDJ and I have to say that I fully recommend this program! ^_^

Very nice, detects USB drivers if you want, fast and reliable. As a past user of Active SMART and Hard Drive Inspector, I stayed with Sentinel because of its features and reliability,

One thing that bothers me though is the online activation. If I buy a family pack and install it in 3 computers of mine (one of which holds a dual boot, so it would be a total of 4 installs) how many times will I be able to activate it? Is it 10x3 computers = 30 times? And if so, is it possible to reset the counter?

I'm asking this because I format and reinstall my machines very frequently and have suffered the pains of such kind of protections (especially chez RoboForm who made me buy my multiple licenses twice because of this).

Thanks for taking your time in answering my question and good luck in the sale! ^_^

Janos Mathe Thanks for your message and your kind words!

Different hardware configurations increase the activation counter. So if you re-install the operating system on your computer(s) regularly, it is no problem: you can activate the software as many times as you want.

Also after a successful activation, you may use the Configuration - Update - Backup Configuration button. This saves all statistics, settings and registration details so after re-install, you can use the Restore Configuration button there. This way there is no need to manually configure (and re-activate) the software.

Anyway, if the number of possible activations reached, just send an e-mail and I'll reset the counter.

Janos Mathe Important note about hardware compatibility: the current version of the software supports more RAID controllers to detect HDD / SSD status information connected to these RAID controllers.
This includes (for example but not limited to) Intel Matrix controllers as it was asked by many users (a driver update may be required).

Albert C. Thanks so much Janos! Following your advice, I will save all my configs into CFG files so I can restore them at future times.

It's a nice way to protect your software. Hopefully many would follow this method.

Thanks again! ^_^

Brian W Janos, thank you very much for your product that's #1.
Couple of questions. Is there going to be a limit as to the total number of these deals available on the 10th of March?

Second, I have a small server cluster + several media PCs, and laptops for my family. Would I be able to buy (2) of these deals? And get a total of 10 licenses then?

Janos Mathe Thanks!

There is no limit for the available licenses on 10th March.

Yes of course, you can get 2 of the packages to protect all your systems. Ordering 2 or more packages will result even a slight more discount.

Bud Gallagher I just tried to order 2 packages expecting to see the sightly extra discount Janos mentioned in his comments 4 comments above. When I request 1 package the order page correctly calculates the $29.99 price. If you change the quantity to 2 packages The order changes the price to $56.00 per unit and then deducts 32.51 from the gross price leaving the final price as $79.49 for 2 packages. Based on Janos's above comments, I expected to a final price for 2 packages to less than $ 59.98. If the discount remains at 52% then I would expect that 2 packages would have a net cost of $53.76 calculated as follows: 2 packages times $56.00 times 48% = $53.76.

So whats the deal on the 2 package deal and how do I get it?

Bud

Janos Mathe You're absolutely right. There was a problem with the discount setting for 2 or more packages, now it is fixed.

Now the total is calculated correctly and the total net cost of 2 packages is $ 53.65.

Excuse for this trouble.

Richard Andersen This is a great program. I've been having problems with a rather new WD disk for a long time, I/O operations regularly slow down to a few Kb/s for long periods and I haven't been able to pinpoint the problem.

Now I can see that the disk has 33 weak sectors which must be the cause of the problem. I suspected it might be something like that, but WDs diagnostics program always reports everything is OK, and the problem is not mentioned under SMART info. Great to know what's actually wrong with the disk, don't think i'd ever have figured it out without your program!

Unfortunately your program also says it's not enough to having the disk replaced, so I can only hope it breaks down at some point for these slow-downs are really annnoying.

In general I don't trust WDs diagnostics program very much anymore, since it once reported one of my Studio drives having bad sectors and therefore should be replaced. During that test the drive was connected via the e-SATA plug, which has no SMART support. I then ran the test again over the USB plug which has SMART support, and here it tested OK. It showed up it was just the e-SATA cable that was bad, after replacing it the disk also tested OK via e-SATA.

Thanks for the deal!
Richard

Janos Mathe In some cases, such weak sectors may be caused by power failure / power loss or drive connection issues.

In these situations, the Disk menu - Surface test - Reinitialise disk surface test forces the drive to re-test such sectors and fix their status. This usually results in better functionality (reduced amount of such weak sectors, increased health and performance).
More information: http://www.hdsentinel.com/faq.php#tests

I completely understand the situation: tests showed that some combo (eSATA + USB) drives can work better on USB and provide disk SMART information also, which is not true on the eSATA line (even if we'd expect that eSATA should offer better connection, higher performance, reliability and functionality).

I have 2 questions prior to purchasing:
1-Is it really free lifetime upgrades?
2-If I purchase a single license, can I transfer it if I change my computer in the future?

Thanks!

R Walker Hi Janos,

I would like to ask if the program is able to restore an external HDD to its factory capacity storage? I have a new 320HB HDD but it was reduced to 80GB after cloning for my DELL notebook and I am not able to reset the capacity back to 320GB thereafter. There is a software HDD Capacity Restore but it only can work for internal HDD(which I cannot get it work with a notebook).

If there is not such feature, is there a plan to include it in the next upgrade of the program?

Thanks.

Janos Mathe Hi Gonzalo,

1) Yes, the upgrade is free to all future released versions.
2) Yes, the license can be transferred to a new system if it is removed previously from the other computer.

Janos Mathe Hi R Walker,

The missing capacity can't be restored by the current version.

This can be caused by different issues, for example:
- the clone software created a 80 GB partition only (and the remainder of the HDD is empty so you can create an empty partition on that space).
- the drive capacity is limited, then it may be "unlocked". This function may be available in a later version of the software.

If possible, can you please use the Report menu Send test report to developer option with the trial version of Hard Disk Sentinel when the appropriate drive is connected?
This way I can check the possibilities and may advice in e-mail.

Frank Stephens I wasn't going to bother with this since there are numerous utilities, including a number of free ones, which can read S.M.A.R.T. data. But then I saw that this can read S.M.A.R.T. data on my RAID array, which otherwise I only have limited access to from my BIOS. For me, it's a bit pricey since I don't need the family license, but it's probably worth it. Requesting information on a RAID drive can cause Hard Disk Sentinel to hang for a very long time. It's also unaware that Intel Rapid Storage Technology supports two volumes per array, it's only associating the drives with the first volume. Based on the reported values, I may swap out one of the drives.

If all else fails, you could try BING, it has USB support. I imagine it can do the trick (the trail version is fully functional AFAIR):

Janos Mathe @Stan: no, only saving the HDK file is not enough.
The recommended method is Configuration - Update - Save Configuration to save the registration details.

Janos Mathe @Frank: Most other solutions (especially the free ones) provide no information for RAID arrays, USB drives, SCSI/SAS drives, provide no disk testing, trend analysis, reporting and so.

The detection of RAID information may take a bit longer time than detection of regular drives, this depends on the actual controller, disks and configuration. Of course, should not take very long time.

If you can use Report menu Send test report to developer option (from the trial version) I can verify the situation and these reports always help to improve detection and performance.

R Walker Thanks Janos and Richard.

By cloning some OEM notebook HDD, the old HDD which contains the limiting HPA settings would shrink the bigger-sized new HDD to be the same size as the old HDD and the "loss" capacity would be completely invisible with any computer or software. No visible empty partition or unallocated space. The only way to restore to the factory capacity is to reset the firmware on the HDD (restore LPA48, HPA, DCO settings).

I also understand that it is nowadays quite common for the newer big-size HDD to have similar problem when mishandled (shrinked capacity). In addition, many HDD show less than their factory capacity and we do not know it.

Thus I think a feature to restore HDD factory capacity for an external HDD (Freeware "HDD Capacity Restore" can restore factory capacity only for internal HDD but many like myself use notebooks only nowadays) would be useful for many. I look forward to the inclusion of this feature in the next revision of the software.

I would be buying the HDD Sentinel software as I feel it is a great application. And will email the report in due course. It would be great if you can help resolve my problem. Thanks!

bob roos This sounds very interesting. I will have to check it out. Smart data over USB is especially valuable.

Activation based on hardware configuration -- is a disk drive part of that configuration? I have a bunch of hard drives that I swap in and out of the sata connection depending on my needs. (No need to power data I am not using.) Does changing the hard drive change the configuration? BTW, I really, really like the quick support answers I see here.

On the subject of reduced capacity after cloning. It is a known problem with Dell "instant media" machines (where you can play a DVD without booting the OS). I worked with Seagate tech support after my drive's capacity was zapped and nothing we did would restore it. It doesn't make sense since software destroyed it then it should be able to restore it. Seagate replaced the drive.

Janos Mathe The missing capacity is a really interesting question. According your information, I thought that capacity limit is related to the Host Protected Area (HPA) feature, which should be unlocked by software. I'm curious about the report(s) of such drive(s) to verify if this caused the missing space or if there's an other issue.
H.D.S. Hungary - Mar 10 2011 at 12:18am Copy Link

Janos Mathe The SMART data can be acquired on most newer USB enclosures / hard disks (older models usually have no functions to allow the detection of such information).

On http://www.hdsentinel.com...ddisks.php there is more information about USB drive support and a huge list of known USB bridge chips which can or can't provide the required information.
Reports help lots as that way I can examine if other (currently unknown) USB enclosures could be supported.

The activation is connected to the system hard disk only. So if you modify / replace any other component or add / replace other (secondary) hard disks, there are no problems and no need to activate the software again. You can have any number of disks (both active and spare), this does not cause problems with the license.

Thanks, I'm trying to help as much as possible :-)

bob roos I worked with Seagate Tech Support and even using SeaTools for DOS "restore original capacity" function failed with an error code and they could not tell the meaning of that error code so they said they would replace the drive and I sent it to them. We tried every kind of clear and reset that was on any program available.

Thanks for info on activation.

I had a drive that started giving me very slow response (SATA with throughput of 38-40MB/Sec. I replaced the drive and got 96MB/Sec. Smart data shows nothing wrong. HDS shown no problems yet the drive is SLOW. It says "Real time performance data is not supported on theis disk". Is this a drive limitation or a connection limitation or a program limitation? The drive is connected via eSATA and was previously connected via USB. I switched because under USB I got the same performance not supported and figured it was the usb connection.
Mar 10 2011 at 12:59am Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe The "Real time performance data is not supported on this disk" is related to the current operating system (Windows), not the software and not the drive / connection.
This with possible solutions described at http://www.hdsentinel.com/faq.php#q12

bob roos Thanks for that info. Are there any plans for performance monitoring/testing independent of windows? Performance is an important part of health.
Mar 10 2011 at 1:33am Copy Link

Janos Mathe There is an independent Performance % value for each drives (displayed just above the Health % value) which shows if the drive does not perform well (for example, on older IDE drives it quickly showed if there is a 40 conductor cable present which limits the transfer speed).

Scott Hamilton How useful is HD Sentinel for SSD's (in this case 80G Intel X25's?
Mar 10 2011 at 2:31am Copy Link

Janos Mathe HD Sentinel supports the detection of SSDs, provides accurate status information for various models.
Please see http://www.hdsentinel.com...ty_ssd.php for the currently tested and supported products, the list is constantly expanding (Intel X25 is also supported of course).

Most SSDs have no temperature sensors, so their temperature may not be available, but other parameters, including health (especially if decreased due wearout) can be examined, monitored.

Frank Stephens I like the information that Hard Disk Sentinel provides but I'm not happy that it changes so much behavior. Changes to how people's PCs work should be opt-in, not opt-out. And I doubt that it's following my Windows Power Scheme. The delays which I was seeing appear to be due to external USB drives, but I'm not prepared to point the finger at Hard Disk Sentinel since I've also installed other USB-related software recently.
Mar 10 2011 at 4:40am Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe Thanks for your opinion and feedback. Can you please describe what do you feel "changes so much behaviour"?

I feel you mention that
- HD Sentinel automatically starts with Windows (to keep the data protected and alert upon issues like other data protection software, eg. as antivirus software, firewalls and so)
- HD Sentinel shows the disk status on Windows Explorer icons to reflect disk usage and health.

Of course both can be disabled on Configuration - Preferences and Configuration - Disk Control pages, however according to the feedback of users, more users see the benefits of these default settings. Excuse me if these settings are different that you would prefer.

HD Sentinel follows the Windows Power Scheme as does not wake up sleeping drives on periodic updates.
But to detect hard disk status information, the software regularly issues SMART command which (like a disk read/write command) may prevent the drive(s) from entering standby mode. (I suspect this is what you feel "not following the Windows Power Scheme".)
If you set the status detection frequency (Configuration - Advanced options) to a value larger than the hard disk sleep timeout, things will work as expected.
(however, by default the software updates disk information regularly to follow the changes in status, especially temperature).

Frank Stephens Actually, Hard Disk Sentinel appears to be spinning down some drives. There's a power/activity light on one of my external USB drives which has never turned off while my PC was awake until I installed Hard Disk Sentinel, although sometimes installing software will cause some part of Windows which wasn't functioning properly to start working. There's an option not to spin down drives under Configuration, Disk Control, which leads one to suspect that it may ignore the settings in Windows Power Options for when drives should spin down, if at all. It changes the drive icons by default. I don't mind having additional features, but they should be clearly described in the Help without applying them without my permission. In Vista and higher, open the Control Panel to Power Options, you'll see Power Plans, each with a Change Plan Settings option. There are very basic settings, with an option to Change Advanced Power Settings. There are yet more options under Change Settings that are Currently Unavailable.
Mar 10 2011 at 5:45am Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe I can make sure Hard Disk Sentinel does not spin _down_ drives at all. I do not really think the issue with the USB drive is related to Hard Disk Sentinel but if you can use Report menu Send test report to developer option when it is connected and active (and an other when the drive is turned off / spin down) I can examine the situation and check what can cause the issue and/or what could be done to prevent that.

The option to "prevent spin down" is designed especially for some (mostly USB drives) which show themselves as active (spinning) but spin down internally. This may be annoying as when the user wants to read/write a file, he needs to wait before each access to the disk to spin up again, so the software can be used to prevent this spin down. Eg. older WD MyBooks may work better if that option is enabled.
Of course, if that option is enabled, it overrides the Windows Power Options as we'd expect (as does not allow the dirve to spin down). That's exactly the meaning of that option.

Thanks for your opinion about the icons, I'll keep in mind that!

Janos Mathe @w s: Thanks!
In HDS, the following tests are possible to reveal and fix HDD problems:
- hardware short test
- hardware extended test
- hardware conveyance test (supported only on some models)
- seek time test to verify access time and noise after acoustic level adjustment
- software read test
- software write test
- software combined write + read (with verify) test
- refresh data area test
- reinitialise disk surface
and with high number of options for the last ones, eg. repeat count, overwrite passes and patterns, test of specific area and so.

Bud Gallagher @kjbill - Today's family package price is about the same cost as a discounted one license purchase. As I see it @ $30 for 5 licenses equals $6 each. I don't think you will find a better price anywhere. I bought 2 family licenses last night for less than the cost of a single family license at regular price.

I have already gotten my monies worth as HDS discovered a failing hard drive on one of my laptops.

Staley I have a question about the activation process... normally I am very much against them, but from a statement about stating the activation "profile" can be backed-up and restored, thus eliminating the need for a Internet connection for future installs on a computer. How is this determined, is it a pure foot-print of the configuration during activation or can some components be upgraded and changed within a period of time without requiring re-activation? (Similar to Windows XP activation policy for retail copies.)
Mar 10 2011 at 6:58am Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe You are right: after a successful activation, you can use Configuration - Update - Backup Configuration to save the activation details (and current settings, statistics).
After restoring that configuration (possibly on a new system), there's no need to activate again.

The activation footprint is generated by using the system hard disk model, serial number and revision only.. So you can modify / replace any other hardware component or add / replace other (secondary) hard disks, there are no problems and no need to activate the software again.

Staley @Janos - "After restoring that configuration (possibly on a new system), there's no need to activate again."

I'm confused... so the restore can be on a different computer and not trigger another activation??? Since the hard drive would be possibly different. (In most cases I personally would need to restore due to a failing or damaged drive.)

bob roos I'm sold. I just bought a license.

Let me say again what a pleasure it is to see a developer so open to questions and responding so promptly. It is now very late in Hungary so I would not expect any answer. I am interested in hearing more about how this works and what it does for "repair" in comparison to SpinRite (perhaps an FAQ entry?). That is a splendid (but unfinished) program. Perhaps you can use your knowledge of HDD systems to expand on the recovery of data. Bigger drives mean more data and more data to be lost in a crash.

Janos Mathe Thanks! Yes, it's getting late :-)
To be honest, I can't say too much about SpinRite.

However, I can make sure that during the development of Hard Disk Sentinel, got high amount of reports, information, technical details from various fields including leading data recovery companies in our area. The whole disk monitoring, testing and repair features were designed to detect even minor issues and fix the situation if possible.
The technical reports and information (complete S.M.A.R.T. details) about failed drives greatly helped this development.

For more information and technical descriptions, I recommend to visit:

bob roos My issue with SpinRite was that it was recovering (refreshing) data on the hard drive and was at 95% of the way through the disk when the hardware totally died. IF it had been copying off that data to a clean drive at the same time it was refreshing it, I would have had nearly all of my files. As it is I lost everything.

This was before the readily available disk imaging software of today, but that software gives up and SpinRite used statistical analysis to determine the data bits rather than giving up.

Sometimes there can be some (bigger) delays in processing the order but usually it is completed in less than 5 minutes.

I want to say thank you very much for sending me the email to this sale a few days back. You have been very helpful in emails over the years and now I can put this on all my PCs & laptops.

I began using this program after I saw some pictures of your program, several years ago showing a hard drive about to fail, and asked what program that was. I thought WOW, I don't have anything like that on my PCs.
I have watched as you have grown your program in so many positive ways. I've only one time before ever been in contact with program creator like this and I feel like every time I send you the data for a hard drive internal or external, that I'm contributing to your data base and in turn helping you to make the program better for all of us.

Your program is simply a MUST have for me, I apologize because I meant to publicize it more around the web. If you ever email me again about something like this I will do a better job.

SoftCollector Dear Janos,

Thank you for investing the time to answer users' questions on this forum. I have several questions of my own regarding the software offered.

1. Is it possible to buy a single license at a discounted price?
2. I have an external HDD (WD My Passport Essential 1TB) for which Hard Disk Sentinel shows a health status of 18% due to a higher number of relocated sectors count. If I buy a license, would the registered version be able to help with this kind of error?

Kind regards,
Aug 10 2011 at 1:56pm Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe Dear SoftCollector,

Thanks for your message and question.
There is a discount available at this BDJ page:
http://www.bitsdujour.com...ofessional

About the hard disk with errors:

Yes, Hard Disk Sentinel offers several tests and methods to both improve the hard disk usability
and to make it more healthy.

It is important to know that the bad (reallocated) sectors reported are already repaired
by the hard disk. They are no longer accessible, the hard disk no longer reads or writes
those sectors but instead, it uses the spare area instead.
So if all such sectors are known by the drive (and marked as bad), there should be no problems,
as the drive is fixed. Testing the hard disk surface should show no problems in this case
(as it does not access the bad sectors at all).

I suspect on "repair" you mean to completely hide these bad sectors.
This is possible in registered version of Hard Disk Sentinel Pro:
by using the "Offset" column on the S.M.A.R.T. page for the attributes
marked with yellow ! symbol. Please let me know if I can assist in that
(maybe a Report menu - Send test report to developer option would be nice as then
I can check the disk status and advise step-by-step).

However, this does not repair the hard disk, just confirms that you acknowledge the problems
reported, you know the drive is stable and you want to restore the drive to 100% health
and want to be notified about only new problems.

Disk "repairing" is a different thing: that forces the drive to examine the complete surface
and if required, reallocate as much sectors as possible. This may increase the bad sector counter
but generally, the resulting drive will be usable as the remaining disk surface (and the spare area) will
work without problems. By using Disk - Surface tests (available in the registered version of
Hard Disk Sentinel) you can make sure that the drive is stable and there are no further
problems reported in the future use.

I recommend to click on the "?" button next to the text description for more information about
the bad sectors and how these work. Also you may get more details at:
http://www.hdsentinel.com/faq.php#health

For the recommended steps to really repair the hard disk with the tests in Hard Disk Sentinel,
please check the following topic:
http://www.hdsentinel.com/faq.php#tests

After these tests are completed and the surface area is really repaired (the Disk - Surface test - Read test
shows no yellow / red blocks at all) you can use the "Offset" method described above to acknowledge
the problems, confirm that the drive is fully functional and restore the drive health to 100%
(clearing the indication of bad sectors from the text description also).

I hope I could help.
If you have any questions, please just let me know.

Ps. I sent an e-mail also.

SoftCollector Dear Janos,

Thank you for your prompt reply - and your email.

1. I will follow the steps proposed and let you know if they have helped me solve the problem.

2. By "repairing the HDD" I meant functionality similar to the one offered by Spinrite 6 and HDD Regenerator. They perform some low-level magic on the surface of the HDD and actually "repair" bad sectors - not just mark them as such or relocate them. Spinrite is especially effective in my opinion.

Kind regards,
SC

Janos Mathe Thanks!

About "repairing the HDD": the software you mentioned do exactly the same what I wrote (and what is included in Hard Disk Sentinel at Disk - Surface test - Write test): they perform a disk surface analysis by overwriting the surface. The result is that the drive is more stable and more usable. Then if you create partition(s) on the proper hard disk, they have less (preferably 0 bad sectors).
Some other software may call this function (incorrectly) as low-level format.

This functionality is included in Hard Disk Sentinel of course. Just Hard Disk Sentinel offers more such functions and options, for example to

a) extend the data availablity (even if the hard disk contains stored data) by using Disk - Surface test - Read+write+read (refresh data area)

b) perform a full overwrite with special patterns and clear all data to force the drive to reset its surface to factory default state (Disk - Surface test - Reinitialise disk surface).

c) offer different write patterns, limit testing to specific area, specify number of passes and direction, etc.

Please select the above functions and check the detailed description displayed about each tests for more information about them and which test is (approximately) same (or even better) than functionality included in other software.

John Terdik IMHO this is a must have utility!!!! The early warning you get for drives that are failing is SUPER. Numerous times HDS has saved me and it is SO nice to discover HD issues before the drive fails. In a recent drive failure I had my boot drive in one week go from 100% good to where I encountered several drive errors in a day.

I currently have about 50 HD ranging from 500GB to 3TB (I just donated all of the smaller drives to my local college) and before any drive goes into production I first run the HDS scan at the highest level (this level will destroy the data on the drive). I've actually discovered bad NEW hard drives with this function. Recently I RMA and received 8 Seagate drives all of which are currently being tested. Because I have so many hard drives I have one system that is devoted to only testing hard drives.

As I found out the payment processor share-it doesn't write the correct license form "Family License" in the corresponding emails and their invoice. If you read the license information standalone without been here it's only the single license. Could you please check this at share-it and maybe initiate sending the buyers a correct license confirmation email?

Peter C1 Q1. If you install the program on a computer and that computer dies, can the license be revoked BY THE USER, so it can be re-installed on another/new computer? (I suppose this question is as relevant to a single license as per the 5 license Family version).

As an example of USER License revocatio: MAXA Cookie Manager allows the User a simple web-based process so that the users single license can be shared on more than 2 of the User's computers but only ever a maximum of 2 PC's at one time

Q2. Do you know if any HDD manufacturer will accept the DATA from H.D.S.P. as PROOF that the HDD IS ABOUT TO FAiL and - if still under warranty, will replace the hard drive before it physically fails, OR does the user have to keep using the HDD until it physically fails before the user can claim warranty replacement?
Mar 9 2012 at 12:28am Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe A1: Yes of course: if the computer dies (or just replaced) it is possible to move the license to a new system without problems.
The Family version allows use of the license on up to 5 systems at one time.

A2: All manufacturers accept the displayed data for warranty replacement when the hard disk is about to be failing. In this situation, the health of the hard disk in Hard Disk Sentinel is 0%, the software issues alert, and the text description shows that immediate replacement is required.

Before that point (when the hard disk is not perfect, but the number of errors does not yet reach the error-threshold defined by the manufacturer, the "At this point, warranty replacement of the disk is not yet possible, only if the health drops further." notice is displayed by Hard Disk Sentinel Pro, indicating that at this point the manufacturer may refuse warranty replacement.

J S Prior to the Portable version being made available, the Family License was for 5 fixed licenses (1 license per computer).

Q1. Now that the Portable version is available does a Family license mean 4 fixed licenses + 1 portable license, or 5 fixed +1 portable, or any combination of fixed and portable?

--------------------

Q2. Can You please tell me why doesn't a Purchased License Holder get automatically added onto the mailing/newsletter list?

As this news of the portable version is the first time i have heard anything since I bought the product (or asked support questions).

--------------------

Q3. In the case of a Dual Boot Notebook/PC does it require 1 license per Operating System or 1 for the entire notebook?

As only 1 license can be used at any time during operation
Mar 9 2012 at 1:11am Copy Link
0
Garry Camps what advantages does this offer over S.M.A.R.T. builtin to most modern pc's ?
Mar 9 2012 at 1:19am Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe A1: The Family license allows the use of Installed and Portable versions in any combinations, just the total number of activated versions should be 5 (or less).
So it is possible to install Hard Disk Sentinel Pro on 4 computers (to get complete monitoring and protection) and use 1 pendrive with Portable version.
Or install on 3 computers and use 2 pendrives with Portable version and so - as it is better for the actual requirements.

A2: Excuse me for the situation. While it would be possible to add e-mails of registered users to the newsletter e-mail list, it seemed a better decision to not do that, to prevent disturbing our clients with such automatic submission. Of course it is any time possible to subscribe to the newsletter on www.hdsentinel.com (or directly in Hard Disk Sentinel, if you use Report - Send test report to developer option) to get notifications.

A3: Exactly as you wrote: I can confirm that 1 license is required because the license is connected to the computer (not the current OS) because only one of them can be active at any given time. If your computer / notebook has 1,2,3 (or even more) operating systems installed, you'd need only 1 license for these systems.

Janos Mathe Hard Disk Sentinel offers more detailed information and more precise reporting of disk problems (even minor ones), extensive tests, alerts, backup functions and so.
It automatically displays (for example) a clear textual description about hard disk issues and recommendations - in compared to built-in S.M.A.R.T. function.

Also Hard Disk Sentinel is more sensitive to hard disk problems as it uses a different design compared to built-in "traditional" S.M.A.R.T. function, which makes possible that alerts could be issued before disk failure (not only when the data is already lost).

Steven Avery Hi,

I bought the individual license of this program back on an earlier BIts, and I will simply say that it is very fine. I have not used it much yet in a techie way, but the design and the knowledge that it is watching that stuff and giving me an easy summary is good.

One of the main pluses of a program like this is simply visibility and ease-of-use and a greater peace of mind about the particular disks (externals as well), without a need to poke around here and there.

On a program like this, the Bits discount is a big help. Somebody saying "oh, no, why did I buy this" is close to impossible with this program. I have it giving me a nice hello on boot-up, and is very helpful. Later I hope to go deeper into its capabilities, since it is well-designed.

Yes, I agree - the wikipedia article needs be updated because of the portable version, thanks for your attention!

About your question: when you plan to move the license to a new computer, you'd only need to uninstall it from the old system and the license can be moved to the new system. There is no need to manually de-activate / revoke the license.

However, if the license is moved too frequently, a copy protection mechanism may be activated. If this happens, please send an e-mail with your license code to infohdsentinel.com and the activation counter for your license will be immediately cleared. So you continue using that without problems.

Brian De Bragança Note for BDJ admin and Janos:

The BDJ/Digital River/HDS Hungarian store process page (choose whichever is correct) which comes up for processing the payment when the "Buy Now" button is pressed misquotes the Australian Dollar price by more than three ($3.67) Australian dollars at AUD$32.66. The Australian Dollar is currently trading above the US dollar at AUD$1 = USD$1.07.

Australian buyers should change the "Show Prices In ..." pull down menu at the top to show US Dollars (=USD$29.94) and use Paypal which will do the currency conversion correctly (plus a bit for Paypal admin costs) and the Australian Dollar price charged by Paypal will be around AUD$28.99. I imagine that a VISA card conversion would be the around the same or better.

Janos Mathe Dear Brian,
Thanks for your message and excuse me for the troubles. I reported this issue to Share-it (Digital River) as they handle the financial part and the conversion. Hopefully they'll update their values and make the coversion better.

Thanks for the tip: yes, using PayPal conversion in this situation is definitely better.

Bertie Brummel Digital River's payment procedure seems to be crappy once more.

I tried to order yesterday using my Opera browser (latest release)
and the procedure hangs when I should be forwarded to PayPal.
The Bug happened several times. The "continue" button didn't fix the problem.

Today I tried Firefox (latest) and it hangs exactly like Opera, but with Firefox the "continue" button worked and the PayPal login appeared.

Having paid, a small "your order is processed" window appears and then the procedure hangs again!

Fortunately I received my reg.key nevertheless.

LittleBiG Thank you again! Last question and I will be a happy user. Should I write you an email when my computer is changed to a new one (because of upgrade or failure), or I can activate again with the same name, and you can realize no using on the old one?
Mar 10 2012 at 2:41am Copy Link

Janos Mathe You can activate without problems, no need to contact every time when your computer is changed or upgraded.

You will only need to send an e-mail to infohdsentinel.com with your license code if you see a message during the registration indicating that you should contact the developer about the license.
This is triggered if the license key is used too often (moved to new systems too much).
Then this counter will be quickly cleared and you can continue using the license on the new system.

Steven Avery Hi,

I just did my upgrade from 3.6 to 4.0, since this is a lifeime license. Another reason for my strong recommendation above, disk tech stuff changes over time, and your purchase does not get stale.

Looked at the reports, some are Belarc-HTML style, so I saved one to a permanent apps folder.

Recommendation: add an overall benchmark number, for comparing puters (or drives) from the portable install, like when purchasing, or evaluating at work. Granted, CPU and memory are often the big issues, and you might not want to get involved there (unless the benchmark is already considering those numbers) ... but having a quick fix on disk access is a good window as well.

The interface is well done, a good example of proper color use and organization. Offhand, as good as any I've seen.

Hmm ... I was curious, so I checked the forum (another big plus) and Janos is looking towards benchmark possibilities.

"Anyway, such quick benchmark is also planned in a later version."

Janos Mathe Yes, I can confirm: new hard disks, SSDs, hard disk controllers, external (USB / eSATA) devices, port multipliers etc.... are constantly released and added to each new versions of the software.
With the license you have you can any time upgrade to the latest versions as well, this way you can be sure that new hardware you will use will be also supported.

Thanks for the tip! Different bechmarks are under construction - they will be surely available in a later version also!

Stephen Brown Glad you extended this deal, I totally forgot about it yesterday. It's an excellent program and a steal at 52% off for a lifetime licence with the ability to install to 5 family computers. I have two other HDD managers one from Ashampoo and this is by far the best of the lot so wont be needed the rest anymore. Keep up the development. Thank you.

p.s. have you considered doing a full suite of hard disc management tools that includes back up, imaging, repair, defragging and recovery as well as health? That really would be something.

Janos Mathe Thanks for your kind words.

Yes, there are plans to extend the functionality and features with different kind of hard disk management functions, like the ones you mentioned and benchmarks - as requested by users some time ago.
These will be introduced in later versions. However, in all cases, as primary function, hard disk / SSD monitoring (and supporting new hardware devices) is the most important.

Peter C1 Dear Janos:

I trialed the program along time ago on an old computer and now I'm trialing it again on a new PC, BUT I have noticed something important.

I think that up to version 3.6 allowed kept the Status Window on the desktop "always on top" of everything else, but this seems to have dissapeared, and now browsers etc now seem to be on top of the desktops "Status Window", so it is no longer visible which is important if your dont have the system tray icons visible.

Q. So is there any way or option that the Status Window can be forced BY THE USER to be "always on top" of everything else and if the answer is NO, then if it's technically possible could you put it on Your "things to do list" as a configuration option?
Mar 19 2012 at 11:00pm Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe Dear Peter,

I can confirm that the Status window (and its behaviour) is not changed since version 3.60.
This Status window (available by the 3rd button in the button bar, a small hard disk with a blue border) is designed to be displayed "always on top": to make it visible over all other windows.

I suspect the confusion may be caused by some other options: on Configuration - Status Window page, there is an option "Display information on desktop". This is exactly the opposite of the Status window: it shows the status information "behind" all other windows, directly on the Windows desktop.

If the "Fully transparent background" option is also enabled on this page, then the Status window (which should be on top) and this information displayed on the desktop looks exactly the same way. Just they are displayed differently (always on top or always behind) relative to other windows.

Please let me know if this is not the case on your system. If not, you may try to check a "clean" install (just to verify the situation) and/or use Report - Send test report to developer option as then I can check the current situation and correct things if required.

Janos Mathe Thanks for your message and excuse me for the confusion. I can confirm that Hard Disk Sentinel Professional Family license can be used on up to 5 computers. These can be any type (desktop, laptop, server, etc..) and they do not need to be in the same location.

Alternatively you may use one (or more) license(s) from this 5 with the Hard Disk Sentinel Professional Portable version, to diagnose hard disk issues from a pendrive, without installation.

The license is lifetime (no annual renewal / subscription costs) and all upgrades are free.

Janos Mathe Thanks for your message and having Hard Disk Sentinel standard version. The following list shows the most important benefits of PRO version:

- Complete backup solution and Panic Backup - configurable backup projects to be executed on a scheduled basis and/or upon different conditions. For example automatic backup when hard disk reports new problems or when hard disk health drops below specified thresholds and so

- Automatic hard disk testing: schedule hard disk tests as backup project to be executed regularly on specified (or even all) installed hard disks

- Advanced disk testing functions to reveal and fix problems with hard disks and SSDs. These include Disk menu - Refresh data area (especially useful for pendrives/memory cards) and Disk menu - Reinitialise Disk Surface - today's best method to fix hard disk problems by using special overwrite patterns and clearing the disk surface (a simpler function may be incorrectly called as low level format in other software)

- Industry and goverment standard data destruction function: the above mentioned Reinitialise Disk Surface function prevents any kind of data recovery even performed by special data recovery companies. Useful before replacing / selling / releasing hard disks

- Portable version: Hard Disk Sentinel Professional Portable version can be used to diagnose the hard disk(s) without installation, just by connecting a pendrive with this version

- More frequent updates: un-official (beta) versions are frequently available in "Professional" edition on both www.hdsentinel.com and our www.facebook.com/HDSentinel page

- New features and functions available in Professional version only

On http://www.hdsentinel.com/store.php you may see comparison between various versions.

a) Does it's backup solution do any conflict with any imaging software - Macrium Pro or acronis / + with any other data rescue software like rollback rx or likewise softwares ?

b) Can the family license be used on 5 own-business pcs too ?

c) Does it work with fat32 too or only ntfs ?

d) And I have a seagate hdd kept that became failed by that notorious seagate bug - The seagate Barracuda 7200.11 family of harddisk - problem with the firmware due to which the data becomes inaccessable and also the disk may not be detected by OS or BIOS. CAN HDD SENITEL recover any data from that too - That seagate didnot have senitel installed on it though .. ?

Janos Mathe Thanks for your questions, here I'm sending the answers:

a) I can confirm no, the backup solution should have absolutely no conflict with any of the mentioned software - or any other backup software. I can confirm no users reported any compatibility issues with them (reported that they use them together with Hard Disk Sentinel without problems)

b) Yes, the license can be used on any 5 computers (desktops, notebooks, servers) in both home and business environments.

c) Yes of course, both NTFS, FAT32 and even FAT16 works. Hard Disk Sentinel detects status regardless of file systems so it can analyse hard disks even without file system or with Linux partition(s) and so. Just the backup feature requires a file system accessible for Windows (NTFS, FAT32, FAT16).

d) I'm afraid in this point Hard Disk Sentinel can't help: Hard Disk Sentinel is designed to prevent this kind of failure and data loss. Hard Disk Sentinel does not perform data recovery, designed to monitor disk status, allows testing, hard disk repairing and backup before such failures.

Jim McGowan Hi Janos.

Odd question here, but can HDS remove the "dirty bit" from a USB external drive? You're probably familiar with this Windows problem - how it handles this. I have a 2TB drive used for backups that my OS didn't recognize one day so I had to disconnect and reconnect it. Windows 7 automatically performs a CHKDSK and then says the drive must be formatted to continue. Windows then places a dirty bit in the MBT and there is no way to remove it. I did find that it can be removed with certain hex editors but I can't do it.

I don’t want to buy another drive to backup the backups on this drive but Windows 7 runs the CHKDSK every boot and tries to format the drive. Sooo... can HDS remove the dirty bit? Without formatting the drive again of course.

Thank you.

Jim

Janos Mathe @Nigel: Yes, you are absolutely correct.
The cost of the upgrade is based on the retail prices (and the difference between them) of the two versions.
But yes, as you wrote, if you have a Standard version and consider upgrade to Professional Family version, this difference may be even more than the current promotional price of the Professional Family license - so yes, the current offer on BitsDuJour may be even more economic.

Janos Mathe @Jim: Hi Jim, thanks for the question!

This sounds interesting. Personally I'd be curious about the cause of the issue, maybe related to communication issue (data cable) and/or problem of the power suppy of the external drive.
These may cause that the drive needs to be disconnected / reconnected and Windows flag it to be diagnosed with chkdsk.

Hard Disk Sentinel does not remove this dirty bit in the current version but this would be an interesting feature as it may be available in a later version. However it can help lots to identify the cause of the problem and allow opportunity to make some changes (if possible) to prevent it from happening again.
If you have the trial version, you may use Report - Send test report to developer option - it may help as then I can check the situation and status of the drive.

Also exactly for this purpose (we have stories about scandisk/chkdsk making more problems than before) Hard Disk Sentinel has an option to completely disable the automatic scandisk launched on Windows boot. This option is at Configuration - Advanced options.

Bruce First, thanks for all the answers Janos.
Q: (1) in info above, and one user comment and on your site, reference is made to ability to "repair" HD.
Based on my reading of website, it seems that this is not same as what SpinRite or HD Regenerator do (repeated read/write/verify/move data if necessary) each sector.

Rather, it seems that perhaps HD Sentinel invokes the HD drive native (built-in) diagnostics and/or surface scanner. Thus, invoking SeaTools like function on Seagate drive, WD on WesternDigital drive, Samsung on Spinpoint, etc. etc. Such command mode (on DOS type boot up) tests I have run from their diagnostic disks, usually there will be a short and long drive test (relative terms, I have seen a 'short' test take 45 minutes) and others.
Is this a correct understanding?

(2) What is the Seek Noise test? I have seen refs to this in other tools, and have never been sure whether one is supposed to be looking for a lower 'noise', or if a higher 'noise' means faster response but noisier... Can you shed some light on that?

Thank you.

DroidLuvr The reviews seem awesome for this product, but I also have some questions...

#1. Edit....I think your answer to Bruce above should cover my question; I'm just wondering what makes your HDD "repair" better than other products...

#2. Re: this is per computer, not per "hard drive," right? (I have an old Dell PC that acts as a file server for my home network, but its sole purpose is to allow access to 4 external USB HDDs that are attached to it.) In addition to that, I have another PC, 2 laptops, and a netbook. [Hmmm, also 2 Android phones that access the network, but obviously don't need any access to your program.] I would fit into your 5-PC category, correct?

#3. Your website talks about a 30-day trial, but the above policy shows only 3 days -- is this a typo?

Thanks!

IF there is 1 piece of software that ANY Computer SHOULD HAVE legally installed on it - especially if You or anyone you know has 'experienced a harddrive failure', well it is has to be "Hard Disk Sentinel Professional".

H.D.S.Pro should certainly be included in every PC Owners Toolkit all the more so since the program now has a PORTABLE version for use of USB Memory devices.

Yes there are other alternatives available that do similar things (both freeware & otherwise) BUT when You weigh up the cost of PiECE OF MiND - which is not a feature ever included in actual computer software reviews, that H.D.S.Pro offers as it SiTS in your TRAY quietly working away for a one time only reasonably priced fee, there really isn't any fair comparison that beats H.D.S. Janos Mathe @Bruce:

Q1: I can confirm that Hard Disk Sentinel (Pro) can perform both methods to perform the highest level of disk repairing if possible. The Disk menu - Short self test, Disk menu - Extended self test are exactly what you mentioned: these are the internal hardware self tests built in the hard disks, these are invoked by the tools released by the manufacturer. These are very effective to detect problems but in some cases may not be enough to repair.
In this situation, Disk - Surface test functions are really helpful, especially Disk - Surface test - Reinitialise disk surface. This is the most powerful disk repairing function as it uses multiple overwrite passes with special patterns (and then clear and verify), forcing the drive to repair problematic sectors. During the test, the software continuously monitor retries (if requred) possible delays / slower areas, temperature and overall S.M.A.R.T. parameters - having a real controlled environment for the testing and repairing. A very "Light" version of this test (without the above and performing a simply overwrite) may be incorrectly called as "low level format" in other tools.

Please check Help - Hard disk tests section for the technical information about each tests and the number of different options used for surface test (eg. repeat count, limit testing to specific blocks and by using specific patterns, etc...)

Q2: The random seek test has two purposes:
to verify if the drive seek mechanism is working correctly and also to verify the audible noise you may hear during the test.
Hard Disk Sentinel has an option to control the acoustic level of the hard disks in Disk menu - Acoustic Management Configuration where you can control if you prefer to have faster (but louder) seek operations or a bit slower (but more silent) seek operations.
Interesting, that in hard disk tests / reviews I never read that the reviewer mentioned the configured acoustic level when they measure noise levels ....
The above mentioned Help - Hard disk tests section also have some information about this test.

Steven Avery Hi,

And I bought a one-unit license, it is on a no-problem disk, at the moment, and I have been very happy to see the status. "The Hard Disk is perfect". This is on an Dell Precision that must be more than 3 years old. (I'm still trying to figure out how to get Windows 7 on my other faster-CPU box to zip like XP).

Considering i have another puter or two here, and could use the pendrive at work, and occasionally have a friend in need, and the Paypal funds have a smidgen, the 5-user license at the Bits price is a no brain strain.

Thanks, Janos ! Build a good software product, and hopefully the people will come. Hopefully enough of the umpteen gazillion Windows puters around will keep getting your software, even at the low price, to allow you to keep improving and thriving (and eating too).

Janos Mathe @Bruce: (I answer in separate message - for the question in separate message :-)

While the main purpose of Hard Disk Sentinel is the hard disk (SSD) monitoring, reporting, alerting, disk testing, yes, it has functions to backup files / folders.
This is in general a file-based backup function: you can define backup projects where it is possible to configure which files/folders to be saved and you can configure
- when the backup should happen (schedule it for any days of the week for fixed time or depending on startup or even make a batch of such projects). You can also connect it for different problem events ("panic backup"), for eample to start a backup when hard disk failure predicted, jwhen the health falls below a specific limit or when a new hard disk problem detected.
This is flexible, eg. create a backup project to save files from Drive #0 to Drive #1 in case of problem with Drive #0, but save files from Drive #1 to external drive in case of problem with Drive #1 and so.

- how it should work to make the backup optimal (backup only important data), for example control only updated files, synchronize files, keep last N complete archives, so you can even "roll back" for your archived files for many days.

Also you can create various different backup projects (eg. compress files, burn them, upload files with FTP, send files in e-mail (ideal for relative small amount but important data) and so.

Please check Help - Components of the application - Configuration - Operations as the above is described with more details.
You can find some screenshots at
http://www.hdsentinel.com...creenshots

Rows 2-3-4: screenshots about disk testing,
Rows 6-7: backup projects
and there are even images about the mentioned Acoustic management and random seek test.

Janos Mathe @DroidLuvr: Thanks for your questions.
I just sent long(er) answer to Bruce about disk testing / repairing. Just let me know if you have other questions in this topic.

Yes, I can confirm the license is connected to the actual computer, not for the hard disk. The computer can have any number of hard disks and they can "move" (external drives can come and go, internal drives can be replaced).
Even if you'd have multiple OSes on the same computer, you can use the same license under these OSes - because only one can be active at any given time.

Excuse me for the confusion. The 30 day trial is for the TRIAL version http://www.harddisksentin..._setup.zip
(which is basically same as the un-registered Pro version). This is designed to verify hardware compatibility issues (if any) and check if the software in general meets the requirements. Also for some functions, this TRIAL version displays "available only after registration". So the registered version offers much more functions, options and higher level of data protection.

But after registration if you feel it does not work correctly and/or you have any problem which could not be fixed / managed or simply does not like it, you have complete refund (this is the 3 days return policy, money-back guarantee).

I'm so glad to read Hard Disk Sentinel seems helpful :-)

Yes, to be honest lots of questions received about MAC support. To be honest, now the development capacity is limited but it is really planned and hopefully Hard Disk Sentinel will be available for MAC in the future.

Tortuga Hello

After reading through the glowing reviews & the interactions from the developer, I decided to purchased this
Did so a couple of hours ago, but ...
There must be a problem somewhere, probably w PayPal servers, as the transaction has not yet completed.
Though, I did rcv an eMail, saying :
» "Your order will most likely be processed within the next 4 hours, but in no case will it take more than 24 hours"

Really?! 24hrs? Strange, never had this before !
Just hoping it didn't get lost in the interwebs ...
RE Order #421****85

Well, it's rather late 'round here, so do hope by tomorrow all is copacetic :)
If not, I'm sure there will be a way to resolve it, right ?

Peace
N.B.: My financial transactions are made through a dedicated address, «NOT» the one I use here

Janos Mathe @Tortuga: Thanks so much for your order!

To be honest, yes, this may happen, I received some e-mails and contacted Share-it about the delay. This happened in a previous promotion as well.

Personally I'm not sure if the delay is caused by PayPal or Share-it during the processing of the order but I can confirm that your order will be surely processed and it can't be lost.

If the registration details will not be delivered quickly, please send an e-mail to info@hdsentinel.com with the complete order number and I'll directly contact Share-it again or even send the registration details myself.

Sorry for the delay !

Bruce Thanks Janos for answers.

Sounding good.

Though, as I have only 1 Windows PC, and one Mac Mini (not yet compatible to HD Sentinel) is there a less-than-family license that would be better for me?

Janos Mathe Yes, on BitsDuJour the 1 PC pro license is also available with discount: http://www.bitsdujour.com...ofessional

However, the current promotion of the Pro Family is almost the same in terms of price and may allow "room" for future expansion and/or use of both the installed and Portable version as well.

Bruce You're right, only $2 less for single.

OK -- your answers and the positive existing customer feedbacks here -- I am ordering (this one) and will give it a whirl.

Sight unseen (since I've not installed yet), I would suggest two items for future feature:
1) ability to non-destructively re-invigorate surface (similar to SpinRite and HD Regenerator)
2) the Mac OS X version.

Thank you.

Janos Mathe Thanks!

Basically the Disk - Surface test - Refresh data area test is a non-destructive type test in general (please check help and description for that test).
Also more type of tests are planned and will be available in later versions to allow fixing of disk problems more easy and quickly.

Yes, hopefully release of a MAC version will be also possible in the future!

Janos Mathe Personally I did not test, but no users reported any kind of problems. I suspect there should be no compatibility problems, but I'd recommend to test the trial version from the Download page (or directly from http://www.harddisksentin..._setup.zip ) as then you can verify that there are no compatibility issue(s) on your system. If you encounter problems or I can help, it is possible to use Report menu - Send test report to developer option.

Amit I saw this on a review for HDD senitel - "Real-time disk performance settings" -
what boost or enhancements for the hdd or ssd are in this feature ?

And do i have to do the software run at startup (boot) and at alltime running too for this real-time enhancement - or these enhancement settings dont need Senitel to be running all the time ?
Aug 16 2012 at 5:48am Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe I'm not sure if the review was correct.
It should be "Real-time disk performance monitoring", on the "Performance" page. This measures the total amount of data transferred (read/written) and provides statistics (eg. highest transfer rate, average daily reads/writes and so).

There are some different features to control the behaviour of the hard disks / SSD, for example the Disk - Acoustic management configuration, Disk - Advanced power management.
These may be used to configure the drives to be faster (seek faster but with higher noise, it is discussed previously today) and also to work faster but consumes more power (for example preventing drives to spin down, park heads and so).

Yes, the software is designed to be started with Windows and active during normal usage, just like other data protection tools like your antivirus / firewall software. This gives the opportunity to constantly analyse disk status, measure transfer rate (see above) and alert immediately upon any issues.

J S JiM McGOWAN & Janos Mathe:

I read JiM's earlier comment/question regarding "the Dirty Bit" that Chkdsk places on USB drives and other drives.

JiM, Is Your USB or Memory Key/device formatted as Fat32 or Fat32X by any chance?

Although it is not the most ideal solution to fix the problem, I believe that You'll find one or two solutions that will SOLVE the problem of seeing the dirty bit and requesting that the user should reformat their drive.

1. One Solution is too reformat the drive in NTFS. I have had the exact same problem "of the dirty bit" in the past and after I changed from Fat32X to NTFS file formats I have never seen the problem raise its ugly head again (and I use XP Vista and Windows 7).

_____
You can also help matters by Using a USB, SATA, Firewire, manager such as "USB Safely Remove" or its newer more comprehensive cousin program "Zentimo" (which is from memory now available again with a Pay Once/Lifetime License) as NTFS devices normally require 'unmounting'

I also use CodeSectors "TeraCopy" (Freeware& Shareware versions) program whenever I am moving or copying any files or folders as it makes absolutely certain that an EXACT copy has been made.
_____

2. Another more recent solution is to format the drive in exFAT (extended FAT File System) which was released by Microsoft and has most of the advantages of NTFS over Fat32, with the exception that Microsoft only releases patches to work with Operating systems back too Windows XP (no win 3.1, 95/95b, 98/98SE, or 2k).

See Microsoft Knowledge Base "Description of the exFAT file system driver update package" : [http://support.microsoft....bid=955704]

All SDXC Memory Cards from 32GB and larger sizes are supposed to come pre-formatted in exFAT format.

NOW THERE iS A CATCH WHiCH iS COMMON TO BOTH SOLUTiONS I've mentioned here and that is: YOU may find that some device readers can't read memory devices formatted in exFAT or even NTFS.

Sadly there is no one solution that fits all computers including Linux, Mac's (which uses HPFS), IBM based Personal Computers, etc, and there are many topics on the web about the problems of which file format is the best for USB or other such memory devices.

Martin W When you reinstall PC or renew a pc(by trashing the old hardware) is there no license activation issue performing this on the new pc?
Aug 16 2012 at 10:10am Copy Link

Janos Mathe There are no problems with that, the license can be activated on the new system.

I also recommend the use of Configuration - Update - Backup Configuration function as it saves all settings, statistics and registration details to a single file.
Then on re-install on the new/upgraded system you can restore this configuration to continue using where it left off (without the need of re-activation). Especially useful if you wish to continue using same set of hard disks / SSDs and want to keep their statistics.

Janos Mathe @Jeff Carbello:
Yes, Hard Disk Sentinel interprets S.M.A:R.T. attributes correctly for all hard disks and SSDs and it has tooltips to make the attributes understand better.
The most important attributes (in terms of health calculation) are also described with more details in many locations of the Help (eg. Help - Appendix - Health calculation) and the website, eg. www.hdsentinel.com/smart

Yes, Hard Disk Sentinel also provides accurate "power on time" values for the drives, showing how much time the drives are used (in terms of days, hours). If a new drive is connected to the system, yes, Hard Disk Sentinel maintains the date of installation and shows even more statistical details (eg. daily reads/writes).

Yes, on the main window there is a "Comment" field where you can enter any text for any hard disk, for example its location "external bay" and/or warranty length. This can be displayed several places and included in the reports as well.

About tray icons: they can be configured to transparent as described in Help - Components of the application - Configuration - Thresholds/Tray Icon:

"The colors can be configured in three different steps: it is possible to configure the foreground and background color for low temperature (green level), high temperature (red level) and temperature between the low and high settings (yellow level).

Any background or foreground color can be transparent. For this, please specify RED=254, GREEN=254, BLUE=255 in the "Define Custom Colors" dialog. This color will be transparent on both the status window and the tray icon."

Janos Mathe @Alexander: Yes, this is a common problem for older USB enclosures / adapters (and the first set of USB 3.0 devices).
These do not allow detection of S.M.A.R.T. information about the hard disks - regardless of the software used.

However, newer USB models have special functions, allowing this but these functions are not widely used. So it is possible Hard Disk Sentinel can provide further details as it has support for most possible USB devices.

Please check
http://www.hdsentinel.com...ddisks.php
for information about the support of such USB chips and a list of known "working" devices and devices "not possible" to support because of the missing function from the chip.

If you can use Report - Send test report to developer option, I'd be check the actual USB device as it is possible that a firmware update of the USB chip (for early USB 3.0 chips) can solve the problem quickly.

Also Disk - Surface test functions can be used in this situation to diagnose the USB drive with read / write tests.

Jeff Carbello Janos, thanks for you reply. Great to hear comments can be attached to each drive and show on reports.

In regards to length of use of drive in terms of days, hours (and I know I am being picky here), would be easier to read quickly if you can show this in a nice format like years and months and then derive a drive first usage date as MM/DD/YYYY from this also. That said, is there maybe a place on your website where users can submit feedback and requests?
Aug 18 2012 at 3:09pm Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe @Sami: thanks so much :-)

@Jeff: Thanks for the tip !
As you may know, the internal power on time counter of the drive counts only when the drive is active (running). I completely agree that it would be possible to subtract the reported "power on time" of the drive from the current date to get an estimated date of first usage, but this would be accurate only if the computer and drive are running constantly in 24/7 mode.

For example if a drive reports 100 days power on time, it actually means 100 x 24 hours work time. But it is possible that the drive installed 300 days ago - if it works only for 8 hours every day.

So (except if you have a server running 24/7 mode), I'd recommend to use the "Comment" line to specify this kind of information for your records (eg. install date and warranty length) to have it on hands after years when replacement may be required.

Of course you can send ideas/thoughts directly to info@hdsentinel.com and also the Forum has a dedicated topic for "Feature requests":

Janos Mathe @Peter: Yes, if you want to use both the "installed" and the "Portable" version of Hard Disk Sentinel Pro, you'd need to have two separate licenses (one for the installed and one for the portable).

Or you may have "Hard Disk Sentinel Professional Family License" which can be used on up to 5 computers or
4 computers (installed version) + 1 Portable version or
3 computers (installed version) + 2 Portable versions or
2 computers (installed version) + 3 Portable versions etc.
so you can decide how to use your license(s).

Of course these are all lifetime licenses with the option for free upgrades to new versions.

This shows the differences between the Standard and Pro versions.
In general, the major differences are
- more advanced disk testing (for example the "Reinitiliase disk surface test" you mentioned, and "refresh data area" and one pass "write+read (verify)" testing)
- integrated scheduled and automatic backup features
- option to use the Portable version
but you can see the list for more, minor differences.

The Standard version can be installed and used on 1 computer.

The Professional version can be installed and used on 1 computer OR can be used on a pendrive with Hard Disk Sentinel Professional Portable version.

The current Hard Disk Sentinel Professional Family version can be installed and used on up to 5 computers or split the licenses to be installed on computers (installed version) / pendrives (Portable version).

Chris Dennis Can this software monitor drives in a NAS device?
Jan 22 2013 at 1:53am Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe I'm afraid no, as no software can monitor drives in NAS.

The problem is that NAS devices do not provide any interface to Hard Disk Sentinel software to access hard disk basic information (eg. model ID, features) and status information (including temperature, health and so).

They may offer some limited monitoring data (usually "S.M.A.R.T. status is OK / FAIL") but this is far from a complete monitoring functionality.

Many times in the past years we contacted different NAS manufacturers about this issue and to extend the functionality of their devices to allow the detection of this information somehow.

Until now received absolutely no response, so it seems they're not really prefer this kind of improvement - which is sad for users of their products.

Stephen Kreyling I have the pro single version and it helped me to get some sectors fixed. The software does not fix your drives, but it does tell you that problems exists and the life of the drive. I then used HDD generator to get the drive back to 100%. This tool saved me months of work to have to restore the computer. Acronis will not backup a drive to a image with sector errors, and this software helps me to keep a eye on my system.

Is there any pro to family pro upgrade or do we have to buy another license to upgrade to the family pro?
Jan 22 2013 at 4:09am Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe @Gonzo, @M.Nazmi: thanks so much for your kind words!

@Stephen: of course if there is a defective hard disk head, scratched surface area, no software can repair them as that would need to be replaced :-)
However, I can make sure Hard Disk Sentinel can force the drive to work better: to force the re-allocation of sectors and replace them with spare sectors. The result will be a "fresh" drive, which can be used better as there is no risk that a problematic sector will be used again. Please check the Help - Hard disk tests section for more information.

Yes of course, it is possible to upgrade any time by the difference between the two retail prices (Pro 1 PC license - Pro Family license). Just send an e-mail to info@hdsentinel.com with your current registration code and that you prefer to update and you'll receive the details.
However, because of the current promotion, the upgrade cost may be approximately same as ordering a new Hard Disk Sentinel Pro Family license with this 52% discount offered by BitsDuJour :-)

Lito I concur Gonzo And Nazmi. I have been using this program for a while now and it is installed on my main machine and my WHS and WHS2011 boxes and it works great. Support is very fast responding and it already has warned me about a couple of drives I thought were good that I have since replaced.

The ease of how the data is presented to so you can decide the best course of action makes it easily worth the price. I saw one old drive at 50% health so I started looking for HD to replace it with and HDs went on sale got a bigger replacement, by the time I was copying the data the old HD went down to 40% health. I secure wiped the drive and just use it as a test/temp drive and can throw it away if it really just dies knowing there is no sensitive info on it.

You can adjust all the warnings to your own tolerances it is highly configurable. You have an sidebar gadget too if you want that can show you the temps and health of all the drives or only the drives you specify. It'll even email you if you want (great for server boxes).

One feature I use on my WHS boxes a lot are the surface tests. When I put in a new drive, the first thing I do is a surface test R/W test to ensure the drive is good. It gives me a bit of piece of mind that the drive is probably good and won't fail a short time after I add it into my drive pool.

I HIGHLY recommend this software.

Doremi Faso How do I buy the portable version? Where do I download it? - Thanks.
Jan 22 2013 at 11:15am Copy Link

Janos Mathe The Portable version is (in terms of licensing) Hard Disk Sentinel Professional version. So if you have license for Hard Disk Sentinel Professional, you can use the installed or the Portable version.
As described some posts earlier, if you order Hard Disk Sentinel Professional Family License, you can
- install Hard Disk Sentinel Professional on 5 computers or
- install Hard Disk Sentinel Professional on 4 computers and use 1 pendrive with Hard Disk Sentinel Professional Portable or
- install Hard Disk Sentinel Professional on 3 computers and use 2 pendrives with Hard Disk Sentinel Professional Portable
and so.

The Portable version can be downloaded from the "Download" page at www.hdsentinel.com or directly from http://www.harddisksentin...rtable.zip
(this is a ZIP file which need to be extracted to a pendrive you prefer to use).

Please check http://www.hdsentinel.com...sional.php for more information about both the installed and Portable versions.

A (little) bit confused w the license... abt the new portable version

Users that have the Pro Family License can use it, right?
As long as it's installed on a combined maximum of 5 computers, as per the initial terms
I already bought a Pro Family License last time, on BdJ, so I'm covered? Just wanted to confirm!

Of course there can always be improvements and the some things have changed because of Microsoft but H.D.S. is a GREAT PROGRAM worth every cent at the full price and is a BARGAiN at the discounted PRiCE!.

Janos Mathe @Tortuga: Sorry for the confusion!
Yes of course, I can confirm that with your license you can use the Portable version as well.

As discussed some posts earlier, the Portable version is (in terms of licensing) Hard Disk Sentinel Professional version.

So if you have a license for Professional version, you can decide if you want to use it with the installed OR the Portable version.

If you have Pro Family version (which is a license to be used on 5 computers with the installed version), you can use any of these 5 with the Portable version.

It means that users who already have licenses for Pro version, have
- full lifetime license
- lifetime free upgrades
- an option to change to the Portable version

Of course if you have further systems to diagnose with the installed or portable version, you may select to get a new package now :-)

Jan 23 2013 at 12:43am Copy Link

Janos Mathe @Don: The latest version of Hard Disk Sentinel 4.20 is compatible with Windows 8.

Previous versions (4.10 and before) also worked on almost all Windows 8 systems, but with some hard disk controllers / USB drives there could be incompatibility issue because of a major change in Windows 8 by Microsoft.

Hard Disk Sentinel 4.20 works correctly with Windows 8 - both with 32 and 64 bit versions.

Tortuga Hi again Janos :)
Thank you so much for your prompt response!
Humm ... your answer raised another question, sorry abt that! ;)
Do you mean to say that a licensed portable vs (that we installed on one of our external HDDs) is tied to a specific box, PC/Notebook/Laptop?!?
It's confusing bc you say:
«« if you have further systems to diagnose with the installed or portable version, you may select to get a new package now »»
It being on an external HDD, can I not use it on ANY system I chose? Either within my LAN or at a friend's or whatever?
Otherwise, if it's tied, what's the point of it being portable?!
In all, we have 5 PCs/Laptops, so my 5 licenses covers it, it's just that I'm wondering ...
Peace

Janos Mathe @Wild Wizard: Thanks so much for your words, I'm glad to hear Hard Disk Sentinel can do great job on your systems !

@Tortuga: Sorry for the confusion!

The licensed Portable version is tied to the pendrive where the Portable version downloaded (from http://www.harddisksentin...rtable.zip ) and extracted.
That pendrive with Hard Disk Sentinel Professional Portable can be used on any computer in your home, your friends, family or anywhere else.

The _installed_ version is tied to the computer where it was installed, the _Portable_ version can be used anywhere without problems as it uses the pendrive only (save licensing information, settings, statistics to the pendrive, not on the actual system).

Hope this helps :-)

J S ERROR window: INVALID FLOATING POINT

Hi Janos, I have installed the program (v4.1) and get a message windows in the middle of the desktop - after booting up the PC, which I think says Hard Disk Sentinel "invalid floating point" or invalid floating point operation". [I don't have my PC with me at present to check if the word operation is included or not - sorry]

It seems that the program works properly (no floating point error message) every fourth boot up, meaning I have to reboot the PC 3 times before the computer & HDS Pro seems to work happily with each other.

I have uninstalled, done a registry clean up using glary utilities and re-installed but still get the same problem.

Question: Have You any idea what it might be or can you be of any assistance?

From "The Fine Print" section...

Upgrades to future versions of the software will be free for the lifetime of the product.

From the Vendor... posted above.....

"It means that users who already have licenses for Pro version, have
- full lifetime license
- lifetime free upgrades
- an option to change to the Portable version"
Jan 24 2013 at 12:09am Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe @Stefan: Excuse me for the confusion - I can confirm you have FREE Updates for all future versions (4.20, 4.30, 4.50, 5.00, 6.00, etc...)
So you will have full, lifetime license for the version you selected: both the current version can be used for unlimited time and you can get new versions for free.
There are no further subscription / annual renewal / update costs.

The "Upgrade" means changing the current version to a different version (for example Upgrade from Hard Disk Sentinel standard to Hard Disk Sentinel Professional OR Upgrade HDS Pro to HDS Pro Family to protect more systems). This upgrade is also possible - but it is not free.

Sorry for the issue caused by Share-it!
Contacted them previously about the situation and I hope they will improve their processing method. To be honest, I do not know what could cause delay in a Paypal transaction - as there are no banks or other things which could slow down processing the transfer ....

I'm sure the payment will be processed soon, so please do not place a new order to prevent duplicate orders.
I can make sure even if they cause delay, your license will be arrived, so you can't miss the current offer.

If it will not be processed in the next some hours, please send an e-mail and I'll manage to send a temporary license code until the transaction will be completed at Share-it.

I am currently running trail version of your software. So far it is good. Please clarify the following questions.
1. I noticed an option of "Load with windows". Do I need to check it? Is there any significance of running HDS all the time in background? Will it affect system performance. I usually wont run any programs in the background, except for security related softwares.
2. I noticed a green tick on every drives after installing HDS. Is there a way to disable it. Kindly clarify.
Jan 24 2013 at 11:44am Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe Hi Bennet,

Thanks for your message and questions, here I'm sending the answers:

1) of course you can disable to "load with Windows" option and run Hard Disk Sentinel manually when required.

However, exactly as you wrote, it may be a good idea to have "security related softwares". Hard Disk Sentinel falls in this category as it can issue alarm, notification, perform automatic backup functions, measure average temperature and disk activity, and in general, report any kind of problems which may otherwise remain un-noticeable (for example high temperature during a high load of a hard disk, a new problem detected during data transfer and so).

In general, Hard Disk Sentinel does not use high resources, it works correctly even on older systems without affecting system performance.

2) that green tick shows the current status of the drives, used as a generic indicator of the health of the corresponding drive - to quickly indicate problem (with yellow ! symbol or red X upon issues) even if Hard Disk Sentinel runs in the background only.

Of course it can be disabled at Configuration - Disk Control - Modify default hard disk icons in Windows Explorer.

Fehmi Yucer Hi Janos,

A couple hours later I received an automated reply from share-it! saying that the payment failed and I should choose another payment method. I am using PayPal and I did not receive an error from PayPal - that is why I really don't understand what the problem is. PayPal is a way to make secure payments and share-it! wants to make it more secure with additional security checks??

Anyways, I clicked on the link to change the payment, went to the PayPal page again and this time I chose another card linked to my account. Guess what - another message from share-it! stating that my order is delayed!

I don't know what their 'additional security checks' are but the reply I got from them asked me to call them if the transaction failed again. What is it that they want to tell me over an an international phone call?

Janos Mathe Mix624:
The idea is to make the backup FROM the hard drive when it is about to die, or when its status only gets worse, for example by a new problem detected with it.

With Hard Disk Sentinel Pro, it is possible to configure different backup projects. You may configure it to backup from disk #1 to disk #2, and backup from disk #2 to external (or remote) storage and so.
Then you can configure that if hard disk #1 predicts failure (or just a new problem is detected and saved in the log of the hard disk), start immediate backup from that hard disk to disk #2. And if disk #2 predicts failure/shows problem, start backup from that hard disk - and so.

Also by scheduling these backup projects, your data can be protected against not only hard disk failures (for example sudden failures which can't be predicted, for example dropping down the drive/enclosure) but also other kind of data loss, for example caused by accidental delete, virus infection and so.

TAPTRONIC This looks great! I am purchasing now. But I will say this, this is the LAST TIME I buy any software using ShareIT. Holy cow they are horrendous!!

Apparently I have 4 accounts with them now. FOUR! All with appended numbers to my email address. This is pathetic.

I asked for a password reset and got the link to do that. I clicked on it and created a new password. OK. I get the message
"Your change has been entered. Please use the following link to log on as a returning customer using your user ID and new password. "

Go to log in, get error. "! The information you entered (user ID and/or password) does not match the information we have on file. Please check the spelling of your user ID."

So this is the last purchase using ShareIt. As soon as I see it, I am closing the page. I know others have had trouble with ShareIT and I am one of them. Having now 5 accounts with them (because they cant seem to manage a login) is completely absurd.

Thank you for your software! I hope to make good use of it and hope everyone who has to power to do so, rid themselves of ShareIT as a payment processor.

SO whats the deal with saying it normally sells for $62.50? There is no program on the publishers site priced at $62.50. D Rogers: I can make sure that if you replace one (or more) of the existing computers, yes, the license can be moved to the new systems.
Usually this can be done by simply un-installing from the old system and then install on the new system.
Just if this may happen many times or too often, it may trigger an alert on the activation server, then just send an e-mail to infohdsentinel.com (with your license code) to reset the activation counter for your license, so you can continue using on the new system(s).

Janos Mathe @Elliont Stone: Monitor + hard disk testing + hard disk repairing + alerts + backup, these are the most important functions of Hard Disk Sentinel.
Currently it has no defragment functionality, it may be available in a future version.

Marge N Thanks for giving a discount on your Pro Family version!

Your Standard version warned me in time to replace a hard drive and save my data - now I'll be able to have that warning on all my family computers and have a portable copy for visiting extended family.

I would also love to see an SSD / flash drive version of Sentinel. I realize the hardware is completely different, but it still fails and warnings would be great :).

Janos Mathe Hi Marge,

Thanks for your message !

I can make sure the current version of Hard Disk Sentinel already supports 1800+ different SSD models: displays complete status, any problems, degradations of performance and so.

There is no need to have separate version for that - as Hard Disk Sentinel is designed exactly to provide complete information for both internal and external hard disks, SSDs, USB drives, RAID arrays - in a single application, so there is no need to use different tools for different devices :-)

Peter C1 Hello, I installed your program today went thru the setup options **including stopping adding an ASTERiSK * in Disk Control "Do not allow the spin down of disks (...)"

Whatever I try my notebook hdd now powers down after a short while.

Is there any registry key or anything I can inspect or change to stop this spin down (apart from uninstalling HDS P)?

BTW: I'm on max power power saving profile

Janos Mathe Hi Peter: Some hard disks may have their own power management functionality which can power down the drive - regardless of the actual Windows power management setting.

If the drive supports Advanced Power Management, then in Hard Disk Sentinel you may select Disk - Advanced Power Management and drag the slider to the right. This should enable "maximum performance" mode of the hard disk, which means no spin down should happen.
(if that option is greyed, then the hard disk does not support this function).

Yes, generally the Configuration - Disk Control - Do not allow spin down of disks option can be used: if you specify a * (asterisk) then there should be no spin down.
Not sure about the current Hard Disk Sentinel version you use - this option has some changes/improvements recently and adjusted for special requirements of some hard disk models.
So I'd recommend to check the latest version (4.40) or even the latest possible beta: www.hdsentinel.com/beta4/...p44012.zip
and I'd recommend to use Report menu - Send test report to developer option, as then it is possible to check the actual hard disk model, firmware, features and functionality - which may need special attention to prevent spin down.

BearPup Hi All,
I write this in total and complete support of Hard Disk Sentinel, which recently alerted me to a problem with my backup drive - it's health had dropped 40 points to only a 60% health rating, and going down fast. But plenty of time for me to invest the $30 in a new backup drive, thus safeguarding all my backup files (about 7 years worth).

This is the second time in two years that this software has prevented a looming problem on my refurbished drives from destroying critical data (and I no longer use refurbished hard drives either!).

This is an unpaid endorsement - I already have a lifetime license (good "forever").

Regards,
BearPup

Lito If there is one piece of software I say everyone should have it is this one. I have it running on 2 PCs, 1 Windows Home Server 2011, and my main rig, and it has already saved me from possible data loss a few times. The best thing about it is if you see a drop in the health of a drive, you can see how rapidly you will need a replacement. One of my drives this year dropped from 100% health to 63% health over a month, that was more than enough time to allow me to watch the health wait around for the next appropriate sale on the HD size I needed. Unlike before I had this program where stuff just suddenly just started clicking and/or throwing up errors and I had to immediately go and buy a new HD regardless of price because there was no warning than nearly the immediate failure. So long story short, I highly recommend everyone get this program. There are free programs out there but most don't try to give a human readable health gauge. So unless you understand the SMART data it will be a lot harder than just glancing at the HD list presented to you with an HP bar like presented to you in most games.

If there is one con to this program is that it is Windows only. I could really use a Linux version, and a Mac version. I'd probably buy another family set also for my brother since he is a Mac user. The only way to test the Health of my linux drives is to take it out every now and then and plug it via USB adapter to my main PC. Not nearly as good or convenient than it email alerting me daily with the HD health status.

Janos Mathe Dear BearPup,
Dear Lito,

Thanks so much for your kind words, glad to hear the software helped to avoid data loss!

Yes, the MAC version is planned for long time ago, just because of limited resources it was not yet possible to advance in that direction. Maybe in the future :-)

Just a tip: according the experiences of some MAC users, you may try a bootable Windows CD/pendrive and use Hard Disk Sentinel Pro Portable ( http://www.harddisksentin...rtable.zip ).
This way there is no need to disassemble and move the drive for diagnostic, but I completely agree, the best is to have constant monitoring and reporting of new problems, degradations - as this way we have the opportunity to perform backup and take the required actions.

Janos Mathe @Stephen: Please always try the latest possible version.
RAID controllers are the key, not the hard disks: even if the drives support SMART, the RAID controllers may not allow accessing these details.

Hard Disk Sentinel is constantly improving in this field, so it is recommended to try the latest possible versions.

If things are not working, Report menu -> Send test report to developer option always helpful, as then it is possible to check the actual situation and advise, for example by suggesting the appropriate driver update from the Driver Zone page ( http://www.hdsentinel.com/driverzone.php ).

Janos Mathe @BitBucket:

Thanks for the info!

Yes, these attributes are very important - but many others are as well.
(I need to say that before Hard Disk Sentinel first released, nobody was interested or ever mentioned attributes 197 and 198....)

If we speak about important, critical attributes which report disk problems, we'd need to mention at least attributes 1, 10, 196 as well.

Also many others hold non-critical (but important statistical) information which we should monitor, for example the temperature (194), data communication issues (199), Load/unload cycle count (193) and so.
And then we did not yet mention special attributes like G-sensor problems or attributes related to SSD wearout - but these are other questions.

Yes, many other tools can display these - in simple situations. But usually they show no information when RAID configuration used, when external (single or RAID) enclosures used, when special disk controllers / backplanes and further devices used.

And it is important to monitor them correctly: as many other tools only report "Threshold" and "Value" pairs, without the opportunity to examine and verify the real error count and especially without the opportunity to manage the results, for example to clear error counters after fixing possible problems (for example after fixing a bad power supply, faulty data cable and so).

The page www.hdsentinel.com/smart shows more information about the different methods (used in other tools and in Hard Disk Sentinel) about how to interpret each attributes, how to report real errors and possible failures.

Yes, if the drives are properly initialised before filling with important data (for example as recommended at http://www.hdsentinel.com/faq.php#tests "Hard disk health is low or recently changed or I just installed a new (used) hard disk. How can I perform a deep analysis?" ) to reveal and fix possible issues - and confirm that in the current operating environment the hard disk is working with no errors, then yes, they can usually work for many years. Not only 4 years, but may even more, especially if it is under constant monitoring and upon any issues (like overheat, weak sectors, communication issue, spin up issue, etc... so generally when problems reported) we do the required actions to improve the situation.

The http://www.hdsentinel.com..._cases.php pages describe common problems which can be fixed (and avoided) and how Hard Disk Sentinel reports and can help in such situations.

Janos Mathe The current latest version is 4.60, the http://www.hdsentinel.com/revision.php page shows the updates / improvements since 4.50

But generally if you order a license, you'd have a lifetime license with lifetime free updates to all future versions: so both the current latest 4.60, and all future (stable and beta) versions can be used with the license, for example the 4.70 version (coming soon), 5.00, 6.00 and so.
There are no hidden renewal / subscription / update / maintenance costs at all.

Plus giveaways usually offer Hard Disk Sentinel Standard version (not the Professional), which offers less functions, features.
Please check the Store page ( http://www.hdsentinel.com/store.php ) for the list of differences between this offered Professional and the Standard versions.

Joe M I just bought this program. I did not know about the portable version. Is it a different download that can be installed on a flash drive?
Is it considered one or the 5 installations?
Jul 16 2015 at 7:52pm Copy Link
0
Janos Mathe Yes, the Portable version is a different download - and can be used with this license of course.

See the download link on the "Download" page ( http://www.hdsentinel.com/download.php ) or download the latest Hard Disk Sentinel Professional Portable directly from http://www.harddisksentin...rtable.zip

I can confirm the Portable version is (in terms of licensing) same as the installed Professional version.

Generally, if you'd have one (single PC) license for Hard Disk Sentinel Professional, you can decide if you prefer to use
- with the installed version (to get real-time protection)
OR
- with the Professional version (to use by a pendrive, without installation to diagnose / fix issues)

If you prefer to have both versions then you'd need to have two different licenses - or this Pro Family license which allows using on up to 5 computers / pendrives (in any combination), for example
- install on 5 computers and do not use the Portable at all
- install on 4 computers and use the Portable on 1 pendrive
- install on 3 computers and use the Portable on 2 pendrives
and so.

During order, you do not need to specify which version (installed or Portable) you prefer to use you can decide any time.

The only requirement is that the license should be used on up to 5 computers (or 5 pendrives or any combination) if you have a Professional Family license

Please check the bottom of http://www.hdsentinel.com...sional.php for more information about the Portable version.

Janos Mathe @Greg: Yes, Hard Disk Sentinel works correctly with most single and multi hard disk enclosures, can detect status information without problems.
Yes, also works WHS without problems too.

Generally I'd recommend to download the trial version and check the detected and reported status information. If something missing / limited information detected, please use Report menu -> Send test report to developer option, then it is possible to check and advise.

However, no, NAS drives/enclosures are not supported now.
The problem is that NAS devices do not provide any interface to any software (for example Hard Disk Sentinel) to access hard disk basic information (eg. model ID, features) and status information (including temperature, health and so).

Sometimes they offer some limited monitoring data (usually "S.M.A.R.T. status is OK / FAIL") but this is far from a complete monitoring functionality.

That's why this feature is not available in the software: because it cannot communicate with the NAS (in terms of hard disk information).

Many times in the past years we contacted major NAS manufacturers about this issue and to extend the functionality of their devices to allow the detection of this information somehow. Until now received absolutely no response, so I'm sure they're not really prefer this kind of improvement.

Personally I'm researching and trying to make an addition: a small program which can run inside the NAS (just like if we'd add an extension). This is Hard Disk Sentinel Linux version for ARM CPUs (as NASes usually run on ARM CPUs):
http://www.hdsentinel.com..._linux.php
Direct download:
http://www.hdsentinel.com...entinelarm
And for notes, see the bottom of the above link (the Linux page).

This is just a quick test tool, which should check and display the details in the console.
But it is the first step, as hopefully soon (based on this) it is possible to export the status information and Hard Disk Sentinel Pro running on a computer can import this and show the hard disks, just like if they would be connected directly to that computer (not over the network).

Ps. when I logged in, I did not see your message at all, but I hope you can read the answer.

Janos Mathe Hi Lazar,
Sorry for the confusion, but I can confirm that this is absolutely not true.
Exactly the opposite: Hard Disk Sentinel comes with lifetime license and lifetime free updates to all future versions.

So if you have one license (ordered any time) you can use the current, latest version for unlimited time and can update to all future versions for free by the automatic update from the File menu.

You never need to order again - unless you prefer to use the software on more computers at the same time.

Sorry again for a possible confusion.

Please check the page http://www.hdsentinel.com/store.php
for more information. Below the product comparison table you can check the license details.

Roger Rines I've been using Hard-Disk Sentinel Pro for almost 2-years and it has saved me a lot of grief. On three occasions it has warned me that a disk was about to fail. It then showed what was wrong with the disk. Knowing why it was going to fail was good motivation to believe the warning.

Before each disk stopped working, each failing disk was available to make a mirror copy (I use Casper). Because I was able to make a complete copy, including boot information, I didn’t lose any data or access time to the computer.

I recommend Hard Disk Sentinel Pro to clients who tell me they are having corrupt file problems or a computer that is getting slower than usual. Many of those have purchased and installed it and has found, copied and replaced a failing disk before they lost more data.

Hard-Disk Sentinel Pro will also work well with SSD disk. My current SSD boot, installed about 11-months ago, recently lost 1-block. Disk is still usable. While losing a block isn’t critical, it if loses more blocks its 10-warranty will be a no cost way to get away from a problem disk before it goes “belly-up.”

Performance improvement after an SSD replaces a platter disk allows Windows with a lot of add-on utilities to boot in about 33-seconds.

Janos Mathe @Steve:

Up to 5, if you use only the Portable version.

Generally both the Installed and Portable versions are (in terms of licensing) same: they are both Professional version: they have 100% same functions, features.
The only difference is how the software deployed (installed OR started from a removable device, eg. pendrive/CD) and started (automaticaly on startup OR manually).

Generally, if you'd have one license for Hard Disk Sentinel Professional,
you can decide if you prefer to use
- with the Installed version (to get real-time protection)
OR
- with the Portable version (to use by a pendrive, without installation to diagnose / fix issues)

So with this Hard Disk Sentinel Professional Family license, you can use on up to 5 computers / pendrives (in any combination), for example
- install on 4 computers and use the Portable on 1 pendrive
- install on 3 computers and use the Portable on 2 pendrives
and so.

So with your Pro Family license you can decide how many computers have installed version and how many pendrive(s) have the Portable version, just their total number should be up to 5.

Alexander Deliyannis Just a brief note to say that this software is well worth the investment even without the discount. I installed it in our home computers and, after running, received a warning that the hard drive in one of them would probably be failing soon. Please proceed the registration and activation by click on "Help" and select "Enter registration key" in Hard Disk Sentinel Pro Portable.
Enter your name as username and the 15 digit registration code you received and click on "Register and activate on-line" button.
Then the software should be registered and activated and can be
used without limitations.
Make sure that the software need to access the activation server during the activation, so your firewall should not block it.

Then, if you connect the pendrive to any computer running Windows, you can start HDSentinel.exe from this folder to use all functions.

If you have Hard Disk Sentinel installed, please close it first by File -> Exit, as at any given time only one version can be active. You can verify in Help -> About box that the Portable version is running, the word "Portable" should be displayed there.

Robert Crombie I found the Portable download on their web site.
There appears to be no information of any kind ?
Could you provide me with a link to a Portable help file, or to any information ?
Unzipping it just gave a long list of files, with no clues what to do with them.

Janos Mathe Please see above for detailed instructions about how to start it (by launching HDSentinel.exe from the long list of files), register and activate the software.

There is no different Portable Help file - as the Help file is same as the installed version (because both the installable and Portable version has same functionality, features).

Janos Mathe Yes, please use www.hdsentinel.com -> Updates button or directly at:

https://www.hdsentinel.com/revision.php

There it is possible to check the updates in the current latest 5.30 and to verify news/modifications in both the latest beta version and older versions too.
