What are people saying about Helicon Filter

Peter pereh This is a very interesting program. However, as the previous version is free, what are the enhancements in this version? Not much informations about that on your website. And this version is marked 'beta' and has no adapted help files.

Danylo Kozub New features:

Ability to apply filters in any order
Preview of all retouching brushes
Custom semitransparent frames over the image
and many other features

Beta:
We plan to make it realeasy version in a couple of months after we add text , some special effects and help files. Current version is stable and fully functional.

You are welcome to compare both version and decide if the new one is worth upgrading. We strongly believe it is worth it :)

Peter pereh Thank you for your answer. When browsing your forums I discovered that some people are using this program as a plugin in Photoshop CS. I am not very familiar with these photo editors and would have guessed they include what your software offers. Maybe you could outline the benefits of Helicon Filter,even for CS users.

B.t.w., will we see Helicon Focus here, too?
Apr 6 2010 at 8:27am Copy Link

Danylo Kozub We have not yet planned promotion for Helicon Focus but this is possible too.

Helicon Filter is a problem oriented application. When you deal with brightness or noise or sharpening, you have all tools right near the big preview window. You can change all sliders in any order and see the effect immediately. In CS4 you have to make sequence of operations and if you did something wrong in the beginning you have to make it all over again. Even newest feature (smart layers in CS4) does not solve this problem completely.

We try to make Helicon Filter interface as simple as possible, but with intelligent and fine tuned algorithms behind it. So the main benefit of Helicon Filter is simpler, faster, more comfortable way of getting a perfect image.

Lutz Fr Helicon Filter is an excellent program. Please see the review at:
http://www.photozone.de/h...filter-v45
This review only mentions the RAW converter capabilities. The very helpful retouching tools and many other tools (i.e. "filters") in HF are not described there.
I am a longtime user, currently working with HF 5 beta; Version 5 has a much more polished look to it and is already pretty stable.

Yes, you can have it both ways with HF; you can use PS compatible plugins inside the HF editor and, OTOH, you can also use HF itself as a plug-in in Photoshop or PSP, or whatever editor.

Peter pereh I have several plug-ins installed and use them with Photoshop Elements 6 as host. I was not able to run at least 1 of them in Helicon. I get various error messages (Index out of bounds, Access violation), or Helicon just does not react any more.

Danylo Kozub This will be fixed in release version. Most of 3rd party plugins do work from Helicon Filter, you may test them with older 4.93 version.

Peter pereh Again, thank you very much for answering my questions.
Just a last one, out of curiosity: why did you decide to offer Helicon 5 beta now; instead af waiting until you can offer a fully featured release 5 in some months?

Danylo Kozub The beta is stable and we have positive feedback from our users. Now we are adding new features and most of them are requested by those who already use HF5. Conservative users may still use 4.x version, but many are willing to try the newest. Why make them wait? :)

Tazzie This is diffferent and could be so useful for me.  However, like Guy, I'm not too thrilled with the hardware footprint and even more so of the 4 installation limitation.  I like to reformat my notebook once in a while to refresh it, since all this software testing I do junks it up, even though I do use Revo Uninstaller (which works wonders!) and Sandboxie also at times. What I don't get is why bother with the lifetime upgrades, etc, if only 4 installations are allowed.  Between reformats and new computer installations, the 4 won't last me long.  I do give kudos for the per user license, but with a hardware footprint, it might as well be a per machine license, as far as I understand it.  The web site states that:  *Registered copy can be installed on up to 4 computers , as long as only one copy is used at the same time.  May need some clarification here, but I'm still not sure it would make a difference in the end. This is just so disappointing to find cool software then be brought up short by the installation policy.  Oh well .... I'll just wait and see what else BDJ has in its line-up.

Danylo Kozub Thanks for the comments!
Footprint: we included many artistic frames into default installation, that is why it so big. But we will add a shorter installation today.

4 installations: the only goal of online activations is to prevent serial numbers from being published in the internet. 4 installations mean that you can install the program on 4 different computers right after purchase. Software upgrades do not require additional keys.

Major hardware upgrades would require new keys. But it is also not a problem because (1) the counter of used keys is reset every 6 months and (2) we will add new keys if you write us an email without questions. Till now, we had only several users which needed additional keys and only because they have troubles with hardware and had to change it several times.

LU Seems like this software may be very useful and looks great as well.  I too do a lot of computer restoring because of a lot of software testing.  I have worked with other companies with hardware fingerprinting and have never had a problem with re-installs.  Sometimes it took 24 hours but they still reactivated my account. I have just two questions.  1.  With purchase of this license, are all major version upgrades included with the license.  I ask because your website states, " Unlimited license (valid for lifetime, all updates are free)".  Some companies consider updates and upgrades as different things. 2. Is this software supported with Windows7 64-bit operating systems? Thank you
Oct 12 2010 at 11:46pm Copy Link

Danylo Kozub 1. Unlimited lisence means that all future updates are free, including major versions.

2. Yes, Windows 7 is the major target platform for our software. Helicon Filter is 32 bit application which works on both 32 and 64 bit platforms.

Tazzie @Danylo ... thanks so much for responding!  As I have said in another post, I am not insensitive to the concerns of software designers in protecting their intellectual property, and sympathize with the need to find a fair but effective means to do so.

I definitely appreciate the allowance to install Helicon Filter on more than one PC, which is something I need.  I also appreciate the willingness of your company to work with customers to address activation needs on an individual basis.

I have enjoyed trying out Helicon Filter, and greatly appreciate the thorough yet concise approach to working with photos.  Although I work with Photoshop/Gimp/Paintshop Pro, etc., Helicon Filter is great for being able to focus directly on working with Photos in a time and energy saving approach.

Thanks again for responding positively and proactively!  It gives me more confidence in the customer service that I can expect with this product!

Michael R. Just installed your trial and played around with it. I was quite impressed, especially about the speed of the real-time filtering.

But I also have some questions (or proposals) about the filtering-process:

When working on a picture and applying more than one filter on it, in the window left, there is the sequence of filters being applied to the original-picture to get the resulting picture:

Is it possible to save the whole process, i.e. all the filters applied to the original-picture. Thus it would be possible to change some filter-presets afterwards or apply the very same to other/future pictures. I coulnd't find such a possibility.

It would be nice to change the order of the filter afterwards, i.e. shift one filter upwards/downwards.

~~~~~~~~~~
Can Helicon-Filter be implemented into Zoner Photo Studio 12 and/or Corel PhotoPaint 11?
~~~~~~~~~~

(Just) in case you offer a win7-x64-version of this program: Will it be free for current buyers?
Oct 13 2010 at 7:28pm Copy Link

Danylo Kozub Michael,

Yes, you can save the set of filters that is applied to the image. (menu\Settings\Save set of filters\...). You can save it as a global preset to use with other files and batch operations or you can save it in the source folder just for future reference.

Please note that when you save resulting image, the program also saves the parameters that were used to process the file. When you open processed image, you can open original image with all parameters that were applied to it (menu\File\Reprocess original ).

This means, you can always modify parameters and apply them anew to the original image.

Shift filters: theoretically this is possible. Do you need it? Give me an example, please.

Zoner/Corel: Helicon Filter can be called as a plugin from Photoshop or from other programs that support Photoshop compatible plugins. Corel should do this for sure. We do not install into Zoner automatically, you should do this manually. I can give you more details by email.

Win7: Helicon Filter works fine in Win7-64 bit, thought the program itself is 32 bit. When we make 64 bit version, it will be a free upgrade, the license is lifetime as you noticed.

Norman Snodgrass @ Danylo >> 4 installations: the only goal of online activations is to prevent serial numbers from being published in the internet. 4 installations mean that you can install the program on 4 different computers right after purchase. << I multiboot and cuurently have 3 windows installs on my current PC. If prices are reasonable, I would hazard a guess that people will NOT give away a serial number that they have paid good money for. It is quite easy to get cracks for hardware fingerprinting schemes so honest buyers are inconvenienced/penalised.

Danylo Kozub We are also not happy to use hardware dependent keys. But otherwise the hackers buy the program with a stolen credit card and publish the serial in the internet. This serial is blacklisted in the next version, but the current  version is cracked. One possible way to avoid this is to check for blacklisted serials on every program start. But this requires that the program should be able to go online, at least from time to time. Would you prefer such a solution to hardware dependent keys?

But that would be too late for this offer. You will have to offer the program here again if the situation changes. I'd buy on a promise (trust is a two way street) but I'm ill and going to bed now so if you make one, I'll miss it. Thank you for giving the matter your consideration.

Rubby the duck Just a quick reply from another user:
I don't see a problem purchasing a programme using any kind of DRM as long as I get help within a resonable time frame, e.g. 24 hours as mentioned above. I also prefer applications that do NOT need to go online from time to time to verify the license key, just because I own a few machines that are not connected to the www.

LU Hey Guy Simmons.

Just a few words.  I like the idea about an occasional internet check for a valid key but I think there should be some leeway.  What I mean is that maybe someone is on a laptop and out of town but has no access to the internet.  The software should allow them a few more uses before shutting down.

Take for instance, I actually downloaded and installed the trial version.  I loved it so much, I purchased it today.  I haven't activated it yet and am glad I hadn't because I am actually preparing to restore my computer right now.  Long process but I need a newly restored operating system because of all the testing.

Fantasticly easy program to use by the way.

Michael R. @Danylo Thanks for the quick answer. I now just bought your software. Registration was done minutes after the buy.

Perhaps one thing I am looking for: In some pix of mine, I photographed an rectangle object not frontal, but from the side. I tried to create a pix with all 4 sides having a 90 degree, but without real success. In my opinion, if a software would allow the user to define the four edge-points of an quadrangle and would create a rectangle (=90 degree quadrangle) out of it, this would solve this problem quite easily.

Having myself more than one computer, I have not so much problems with the 4-computer restrictions, mainly because of your 6-month-counter reset you descibed above. (The described alternative, i.e. going-online afterwards would be much worse. Programs doing that without necessecity are always suspect of transmitting additional information.) Of course I also would prefer an offline-registration without hardware-fingerprint. The main-problem I have with an online-registration is, if a software-firm no longer exists. Than it is no longer possible to register a new installation on a new-bought computer. Of course I would hope, that in such a case, this software-firm will publish a final version with a totally offline-registration...

Tazzie I wanted to first state that I would prefer a hardware footprint with good support from the company that would work with me on activation needs, rather than having to have access to the internet.  I do not relish not being able to use the program due to not being online.

Second, I have a question about how the activation/hardware footprint works ... I want to start with installing HF on my notebook and on the PC that I do a lot of my major graphics/photo work on.  I don't use the same names on my computers, although all programs are registered to me.  Would that be a problem with activating on both computers with one license?

Thanks!

Danylo Kozub >> I don't use the same names on my computers, although all programs are registered to me.  Would that be a problem with activating on both computers with one license?

No, use the same activation code for both laptop and desktop computers. The name is normally retrieved from the server. If you want to have different names, activate on laptop, change the name in the profile, and then activate on desktop.

Danylo Kozub @Michael R.

We were thinking about using such an approach but with 9 points (2x2 cells). Middle points would allow to add nonlinear deformations of the sides for the rectangle.

Danylo Kozub Helicon Filter has a problem oriented interface instead of tool-oriented inteface in PS and PSE. It is simpler, easier to learn and requires less clicks and time to get things done. But if you have time and desire, Helicon Filter offers you many advanced tools. We are now preparing new version with updated interface and many usability enhancements.

DrTeeth Helicon Filter is very nice software with responsive developers. Development has slowed of late as they are working on a new product. I have been assured that development will speed up once the new product is released.

Users of Helicon Photo Safe should be made aware that Helicon has a decryption key in case the user loses theirs. Not suggesting for a moment that it could be made available to third parties, but it is enough to stop me using Photo Safe. This info was gleaned from the Helicon site some time ago. I cannot find it now so the situation may have changed.

Danylo Kozub We plan to release Helicon Montage soon. It is a program for intuitive photo montage, one of the application is fixing group photos.
Helicon Montage will be released and licensed together with Helicon Filter and it this will be a free upgrade to existing users.

As to Helicon Photo Safe, it indeed allows to recover user password but only if user explicitly allowed this. In this the password is encrypted with public RSA key and only we have private key so we can recover the password on request of the user.
