What are people saying about Helium Premium

Wood Miles It seems to have a nice interface; but, that is only one aspect - what is critical for maintaining a well organized collection is the track/tag editor. This feature is the prime element offered between the free to everyone version and the $29.00 version offered here. When I used the download link provided I was able to download a combination version. However, when I installed it I was able to install the free to everyone version. There was no trial period for the version offered here. (Have I missed anything?) Track/tag editors vary form excellent to a total-waste-of-time-and-effort so there is no way for me to evaluate the merits of spending $14.50.

A. Goyal Wondering if the sale is also on the Network edition that allows upto 5 users in the household? My take on this software- 1. Helium has a useful feature to convert WMA to MP3. My voice recorder only outputs in WMA so this will allow me to bulk convert all files at once into MP3 to be able to play in any gadget. 2. Look n feel of screenshots is not bad. 3. My songs collection is mostly international so I can't expect Helium to fix tags or improve broken MP3's

A useful blog?  Written by someone who set up a blog just for the purpose of that review, has no user profile, no other blogs and writes such a glowing report that the software writer's mother could have written it..... Yeah. that's not suspicious at all....  If I want reviews written by the makers, I'll go to Amazon :-)

Fredrik Heidgert I agree with this blog post feeling written by us, but it's actually not. We are offering a fully working copy for reviewing purposes or magazines and bloggers to help spread the word of Helium Music Manager (see more http://www.helium-music-m...e-version/ ). We hope to get good reviews of course, but never say that they need to be. It happens that people create a new blog just to gain a free license and we regret that.

Fredrik Heidgert In answer to "Wood Miles": Helium Music Manager is available in three different versions, where one is totally free but with limited functionality. The free version contains all tagging facilities, including downloading of information from various online sources (see plug-ins: http://www.helium-music-m.../plug-ins/ ). We even offer a spreadsheet mode tag editor which - in our point of view - offers the fastest and most user friendly tagging on the market. The Premium and Network versions adds more ways of browsing your music as well as more advanced features and tools. More information about the different versions is available here: http://www.helium-music-m.../download/ Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

Neville Franks HMM looks like it has potential however a "Quick Start" guide would be a real plus. The manual is more of a reference and is missing "How To Use It" it information. I also find accessing on-line manuals slow and cumbersome.

I started "Download Album Picture" and it has been running for over 20 minutes and looks like it will keep going for some time yet. It appears to be in an endless loop. I can't see any way to stop this process and Cancel isn't working. I killed HMM and restarted it and tried "Download Album Picture"again. It stopped after a few minutes however when I select a photo and press OK or double click on a photo it isn't appearing as the picture in "Album Information". Further if I press "Next" in "Download Album Picture"it starts searching all over again!

HMM is a program I would really like to like but am having trouble.

Oh and the Download links on the HMM Web site take you to a Purchase page!

Fredrik Heidgert Hi Brian,

Helium Music Manager cannot be considered to be an i Tunes replacement I'm afraid. It focuses entirely on music.

We do have two iPhone/iPod Touch apps, one remote control:

http://itunes.apple.com/u...91560?mt=8

and one streamer which will stream music from your own music library:

http://itunes.apple.com/u...89231?mt=8

It doesn't support apps but plug-ins can be used to download information, album and artist pictures from various online sources such as Last.fm, Amazon, Google, Yahoo and Discogs.

Techtoysavvy I really want something that can fix my wma, m4a and other tags. I want to fix the broken and incorrect tags without harming the good tags. I do not want songs from Hotel California re-tagged to several different greatest hits and soundtrack compilations. What databases do you use? Can you automatically identify mistagged songs from their signatures? See my posts on yesterday's Tune Doctor. I have turned down Tune Up and it works. I also use J.River. It would be great to download lyrics.

If you do these things then I will try your program. If you can't save me the time. I am jaded after trying Tune Doctor yesterday and Tune Up does more harm than good to my collection.

Val Pope This kind of "advertisement" is happening a lot and for a while on BitsDuJour ...
These guys from Helium Music Manager, and others, must be paying a bunch of money for such advertisement...because: Negative advertisement for a unknown or little known product is a good advertisement, and that is so, because many people take it personally and can not ignore it and keep their mouths shut!

This is a kick "under the belly" from BitsDuJour against the interested people for such offers, and that's why they keep the timer going and not post the most difficult word to write, in words of course ... "cancelled" (for whatever reason, but cancelled/annulled).

I'm just a jumble marketing guy and each person may have their own opinions; opinions, which for sure, help each of them make a lot of money or gain other pursued results. ;)

Val Pope @Nico Westerdale: Thanks for a comment regarding our complaints. At least someone/few from BDJ is reading all/some of the comments. That's good to know.

@David B: The deal is off. Usually BDJ changes the yellow button with another yellow button :| ... and they add a comment under the "timer". The timer has a mind of his own and keeps on going on going until the end, because is part of the "AI (artificial intelligence)" of the website; the timer can not be stopped even by the admin or anybody else, as a matter of fact; but maybe a lousy hacker could help with that.

--||--

So if you have poor eye view or poor concentration to distinguish which is what (including colors and words), which many people have (poor concentration - I mean) you end up writing here, in the giveaway section, a good section most of the time, I might ad, with useful software too, writing comment-complaints and nobody of BDJ asks, why are there so many idiots who do not understand what is in front of their eyes ... Maybe because of the relation eye-concentration thing I wrote above? A social common problem of today. People just need more help with contrasting colors and people to keep their word and not a politician nor a marketer :P ... like the "...we usually run the deal again." Because I hope you don't. Maybe those guys had some technical issues, and it's OK to try again, but most of the time, is the human factor, and they oppose their previous decision because they feel tricked or they try to trick BDJ. Whatever the reason ... I got bored writing this comment so I leave it like this.
Bye.

Traveler4God Thanks for the info. Too bad the deal didn't work this time but I'm sure BDJ will work out the problems and have it offered at another time as they usually do when an offer fails.

Thanks BDJ for being such a great company and offering wonderful software for free and at great discounts!

One comment though, I really don't understand how come some people feel the need, or think they have the right, to be so caustic, abusive, and bullying with the comments they post. Those of you who write with such harshness really do not help the reputation of BDJ. BDJ does such a good job that they do not need bullies to defend them with mean words so, please, keep your harsh comments about BDJ or others to yourselves as they do not help promote the mission of BDJ which is providing software "for people who love software." So, please, let's be professional, civil, courteous, polite, and understand that BDJ serves people from many countries and cultures who may not be able to express themselves in the clearest way via the English language which for many is a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th language.

Well, thanks for listening! Here's trying to make the world a better place promoting peaceful and civil discourse among people!

Arlene Manduca The principals and staff at Bitsdujour do an excellent job. They're honorable and try hard to be responsive.

It's upsetting when a giveaway or promotion doesn't work. It's frustrating and feels like a trick. Often I miss the second giveaway that works. That feels bad a second time. When it happens repeatedly is when people get particularly angry.

We all log in to be notified of a promotion. Why can't we be notified of the date we can get it, if the promotion won't work? Seems simple. They know who we are. They can see we get the software and email us a registration code for showing up when the site didn't work.

Someone should put a notice up right away saying - "The deal doesn't work and will be given to all who logged in or made comments. Done! Or "There was a problem and we may not be able to repeat this promotion." No more wasted time.

We weren't walking by and someone decided to hand us something. We are in line at our computer screens. Many all over the world in different time zones make efforts all day when the promo doesn't work. To end up with nothing is disrespectful of our time. I feel it's a valid complaint.

Paying attention to followers' experience on the site goes a long way to generate the positive buzz vendors want. They give away programs to get GOOD publicity and word of mouth.

There will always be problems. But there can always be a PLAN B safety-net to deliver what was promised to people who showed up in good faith. Right?

Nico Westerdale Luke,

Thanks for asking, as you know all our deals are arranged with the agreement of the software vendor, and we work with literally thousands of them. Occasionally there are last minute technical or communication problems which mean that we have to pull a deal. We're working on changing our process of working with the software vendors so the problems happen less often, and if they do happen we have a better system of dealing with it.

Again really sorry we couldn't bring you this one.

"Winamp for big collections?" - Warum nicht? Habe keine Probleme damit.
"Die Anzahl der Skins..." - vollkommener Schwachsinn!

Daniel Hauser @ joan collins : I can't disagree more about your conclusions!

Yes there are other pieces of software out there, that work better as a pure music player. I've used WinAmp in the past and don't see many ways around FooBar2000, but WinAmp isn't that bad either. Still, to me the Helium Music Manager has a different purpose and I feel confirmation by the availability of additional software like Helium Streamer and Helium Remote. What's left for the Music Manager is the management of your music database and the back-end for all your music playing software.

My collection is about 3,500 albums large - most of which I've collected painstakingly over the years - and I couldn't be happier with this application for the following reasons:

x) The Music Explorer lets me browse by several categories like artists, albums, song titles, genres, release and recording years, date added, etc. I can view favorites of any kind (artist, album or song) or view the data in user defined views.

x) The advanced search contains an extensive query editor, where I can refine a search bit by bit and save it for continued use.

x) Keeping the database serviced and complete is easy with plugins for external services. Whether it's about images from Amazon or Google, artist or album information from Discogs or LastFm, these tasks can largely be automated and allow for a comprehensive music database with interesting, important and helpful data.

x) To me however, the most interesting bit about the Premium version are its available database formats. If you ever wanted to reuse all this data about your music, then you've found a way with this application. I've written a (remote) music player application, which directly reads from the MySQL database. This effectively lets me piggyback on Helium Music Manager's various data collection functions without the need to write (and maintain) any code for that.

I don't think WinAmp is capable of a tenth of that and neither are other management applications like iTunes or MediaMonkey. Then again, I haven't kept up to date on those alternatives, so I wouldn't know about recent developments. Why trade in Helium for an inferior product?

Constantin Florea @Aquarius Gabriel - The issue you mention is consistent with using FireFox (especially when having a lot of add-ons installed). I suggest clearing your browser cache and try either Google Chrome and if that doesn't work, please try Internet Explorer.

joan collins @Daniel Hauser:
"I don't think WinAmp is capable of a tenth of that..." - LOL!
Browse by artists, album, song titles in WA you don´t need because you have a own window for each of this categories and can look into very fast.
Also the search is (for me) easier.
WA works with Gracenote but I don´t need lot of the external services (Amazon, Google etc.) because many of their informations are wrong. That´s why I never use "auto-tag" - I write my tags itself (have than one "format" and not one with big, one with little letters etc.). Also images: If you add them automatically many are not right (Kann natürlich das Programm nichts dafür - liegt an den Services).
The database-function: I don´t need.
Helium an inferior product? No, I will not say - but I don´t like it because many other tools (WA or another) works also or better.
Sorry for my english!

PC Thanks to BDJ and Imploded for this software - and I have a question: got it downloaded/installed/registered with no problems (I use Windows 7 and Firefox). When Helium launched and I was fiddling around with it looking through some of my music, Zemana AntiLogger alerted me that Helium was trying to take a screenshot. I blocked it and am reluctant to use it now. Why was it trying to capture my screen?

Fredrik Heidgert @P. Brown

Helium Music Manager does not take screenshots that the user does not allow. There is actually only one place where a screenshot may be taken in the program and that's when a crash occurs and a dialog comes up that lets the user report the issue to us. In this dialog the user will be able to choose whether he/she wants to include a screenshot of when the problem happened. This can sometimes help us greatly in finding and eliminating bugs. But as I said, no screenshot is ever taken apart from this.

Software Babe I purchased Helium Music Manager 8.4 back in 2012 and you sent me a FREE upgrade to version 9.0 and it never worked. I was told to just install v9 and it would replace the updates on top of v8.4. IT NEVER WORKED. I had to uninstall it all and reinstall v8.4 just to get it to work properly as the screen would freeze as it loaded.

Will this new version 10 replace v8.4 or will I have to uninstall again and just use this latest version. I do NOT want to go through all that install/uninstall again.

I have an HP Elite PC with W7, AMD 64-bit with 16 GB memory and all the latest updates.

Thanks.

Ron Cavin I have over 3000 mp3 files on my computer, Helium found them all and cataloged them, but when I tried to play any of my files, helium says that EVERY SINGLE MUSIC FILE I have is a wma protected file and cannot be played!!!
This is total bull, because i KNOW my files, only about six of them are protected wma files, and I long ago moved those off my pc to the cloud until the time I can find a license for them.
This Helium took forever to finish loading and installing, and needless to say it took another forever to find and list all my music files...I am extremely frustrated and irritated at this waste of my morning, since apparently Helium can't tell it's a** from a hole in the ground! My music files are NOT wma, they are ALL mp3s with no restrictions on playback, copying or any other type of restriction. I OWN THEM ALL, bought and paid for, and if I can't even play them with Helium then the software is no use at all to me.

Eustace Phenackertiban I have to take this opportunity to make a very positive comment on this software. I'm usually not shy about talking about issues when I find them, so it's only fair that I offer props when appropriate, and it's very much so now. I've never heard of these folks before, but I'll remember them now.

The purchase process went very smoothly, no Facebook "likes" needed, just straight to the check out process and the download link. File downloaded quickly, and by the time I got it the registration code was in my inbox. Installed quickly, activated smoothly with copy/paste, then the magic. It found 4769 files on my external archive drive in a shockingly small time, less than 15-20 minutes or so. It played every one I tried to play, and the search function was very fast, returning the four copies of "Tainted Love" I had in four different locations, with the name in four different formats, in just a second..

I haven't tested the rest of the program yet, because I wanted to come back and post this before the offer ends. If you haven't yet grabbed this gem, DO IT, NOW, before the offer ends. If you have a sizable collection, you WANT this program, believe me. Recommended!

The software is user friendly for beginners. Although there is no direct help menu, there is a link under HELP to both support and an active forum. The ability to repair broken MP3 files I find useful.

Virus Total showed no indication of malware or viruses (0/62)

Loyal Customer Unfortunately, this player doesn't do it for me.
Downloading, installing, and activating Premium was fine, and easy. No issues.

- Navigation menu on the left (I know I can hide it): There is no text to tell the user what each icon is for when you hover the mouse over an icon.
- The interface should be cleaned up. Too much clutter.
- In the options, there are far too many parameters to select, and many, if not most, of them are confusing and not clear what they do. Why all of this??? Simplify it. Take a look at the Options in other respected players.

Major problems (deal breakers):

1) You cannot import a playlist that is already created (.m3u lists).
2) You can't add a file. It only adds folders.

These last 2 items make it useless for me. I already have numerous playlists with thousands of titles in each one, and it would take weeks, if not months, to recreate them.
If there is a way to do the above 2 items, it is not obvious or clear to me.
There is hardly any decent music player that lacks these 2 features.

Thanks for the offer, though.

D User I just want out of all this, how do I request a refund? Or has ANYONE gotten this work? I've spent over 2 hours and give up. I've seen good reviews in the past for Helium, and maybe it's just my PC or something I'm too dumb to figure out. Not for me unless it works.

Downloaded & installed Helium Premium. It seems to work though it's not very consistent. Sometimes changing a view stops playing, other times it doesn't. Terrible at guessing on the artwork and titles needed, maybe my tastes are too obscure. But I was interested in Helium Streamer so I purchased that. Downloaded, installed, started the service. I downloaded the Helium Streamer 2.0 and Helium Remote apps into my iPhone from the App Store. Entered the IP address and port into the apps as shown in Helium Streamer for LAN. Can't connect. Tried the internet IP address, same problem -- just takes MUCH longer to report it. Tried clicking on the LAN and Internet address links shown in Helium Streamer, get "An Error Occurred, Unable to connect to the database, Exception of type: 'Streamer.Models.Exceptions.HeliumDbInvalidVersionException was thrown'. When I go to the Settings tab in Helium Streamer and try to Open Database, and select the database used by Helium Premium, and click Verify and Save, I get this message: Invalid database version. Expected 11.15, got 12.00. I tried to contact support on their website. Had to create an account, then to had to register the account. It won't let me do that. So there's no way to ask for my money back. Their software won't talk to itself. And yes, my firewall is set to allow Helium Streamer and yes I tried to stop and restart the service, the buttons in the Streamer UI do NOTHING but Windows 10 Task Manager lets me stop & start it. Do I need to reboot? Un-install everything and start over?

Update: I found I received an email from Imploded Software that lets me activate my account, so I posted the same information above in a help ticket.

I transferred the purchase to your correct account and resent you the receipt email at your correct email address.

Constantin Florea @john w User, Also, please log out of BitsDuJour and login again using the correct BitsDuJour account. Otherwise if you continue to use this incorrect account which is associated with the incorrect email address, this issue (where you don't receive the code) will continue to come up.

Michael User If you do not enter your name, and email address EXACTLY as you entered it at BitsDuJour the field where you enter 'enter serial / registration' will NOT 'un-gray'...once you enter name, and email addy correctly.....this includes capitalization-(case specific.) then, and ONLY then will you be able to input data successfully.I know this because I failed to capitalize my last name on first data entry attempt.I then proofread, realized my mistake, corrected it,and VIOLA !! EUREKA!!...the field to enter serial / registration would now accept input.

Fredrik Heidgert We have now been in contact with some of the users who had problems unlocking. In every single case they had mistakenly entered their name or e-mail wrong. Note that "Fredrik Heidgert" is not the same as "fredrik heidgert", so please verify exactly how your name is registered with BitsDuJour.

We can quickly and easily help you spot where the error is, so please contact us directly for help.

Mike Henning If i read the last user posts, i can read that the code is not correct by its length.
I have also seen that i had no answer to my posts.
Please explain how name and email could be false if i copy them from the email containing the code !
It seems a little easy to accuse the user for the notworking of the registration when some users say the same: code too long.

Fredrik Heidgert Mike, I sent you an e-mail approximately 20 minutes ago. Have you not received it?

Mike Henning Fredrik, no, i haven't received it. There is a Michael User with answer 4 hours before, but it's not me.
I have just posted to say that there must be another reason as the name or the email.
I never had this problem, as i install often the BDJ offers.
Actually it's too late as the install date actually isn't yet valid.
Thank you for this email, but even on the site, i can only see your answer for my last post.
Regards

Fredrik Heidgert I just double checked and it was you I e-mailed (as long as the e-mail address is correct). It was sent at 14:41 my time (GMT+1).

Anyway, could you please try to unlock using your full name as "Michael Henning". Does that work?

Loyal Customer What a mess this offer has created!!!
Remember that lots of people here are computer novices, and making the registration process complicated means that it will bring you (and BDJ) lots of headaches.
For crying out loud, it is not a software that secures and protects the USA's gold reserve at Fort Knox!!!
It's just a music player, and there are literally dozens of FREE music players out there.
Simplify, simplify, simplify!!!
Drop the name from the registration process. The email address and the registration key should be more than good enough.
I hope that if you make such an offer next time, you'll keep this headache, and this mess in mind.

Personally, I had no issue with the registration. I also tried this software yesterday and found it far too short of meeting my needs.
The FREE players that I use have more, and better features, in my humble opinion.
But thank you for the offer anyway.

Michael User harold short -Thank you for your kindly advice to 'learn more'...actually,that is one of my Main Objectives in Life... open-minded,and informative, people like you greatly facilitate my ken,and understanding,of things that I am not yet aware.Hopefully,I am always learning,if I am not,I am not paying attention.."Of course, that's just my opinion-I could be wrong".(Disclaimer-the possibility that I am wrong always exists. So I am NOT saying I am infallible) I do have a question for you,harold...are you saying you are infallible, ' harold short ' ???(And please don't be ' short ' with me...LOL.)

Morris Cox harold short, for you to have "been in this for 40 years", you would have had to been using the Internet when it first came out. I call bull.

Robert Hare Howdy Morris ... Well, I guess I am another you can (try to) call 'bull' on ... I have 'been in this' for ~43 years (ever since entering 10th grade at one of the country's first 'magnet School' programs in 1974-75 school year). It was at Northeast High School in Philadelphia, PA where they developed an Aerospace Magnet program that paired up our school with the University of Pennsylvania and NASA (along with the US Air Force), We communicated over what today would be considered truly 'ancient' teletype machines over Arpanet that stored data on one-inch wide paper ribbon that punched holes out on the ribbon strip to store data in machine code (looked quite similar to a ticker tape). A few years later, I was learning to use BAL (Basic Assembler Language), COBOL (Computer Oriented Business Operating Language), RPG-II (Report Program Generator, 2nd Ed.) and other languages where we used IBM punch cards (~80 characters per card) to store data sets for later entry into computers. The computers we used then were the origin for 'mounting and un-mounting' a hard drive. Each HD was a series of several thick copper plates mounted on a spindle that you had to literally mount into a well of the computer and lock in place. When using another series of commends you;d remove that drive and insert another (no small task as each spindle weighed ~45-50 lbs.). Magnetic tape storage (looked like a giant cassette player) was considered 'cutting edge' technology back then. I even remember much further back then that time (when I was ~7 years old) going with my father to 'take your kids to work day' at Reliance Insurance company where their computer used miles of thick copper wires and 100s (or 1000s?) of vacuum tubes and occupied three entire floors of their downtown office building. I have little doubt that Harold is (likely) telling the truth as well. ;-)

Morris Cox Robert Hare: It's rare that I meet an "Internet veteran". I am one of the Eternal September ilk. One encounters a lot of posers, like someone who claims to have a CCNA but doesn't know what a router is or claims to have 5 years of experience of something that has only been out for 2 or 3 years. COBOL is...verbose. Pascal was better. DCL wasn't too bad. tcsh is my favorite shell. Usenet used to be great. Nowadays, there's Reddit. And so on.

I really do hope Harold Short is telling the truth. Knowledge and skills goes obsolete in the tech world real fast and most of what I knew is considered ancient, like shar files. If I tell people that I core dumped Finger 3 times, they wouldn't know what I was talking about. However, knowing how things were really helps to appreciate what we have now and what is likely to come next.
