What are people saying about Home Cookin Recipe Software

Truman Roper My wife and I have spent approximately $300 over the years trying to find a good recipe database before finding Home Cookin. We especially liked that we could copy and paste from old programs. No retyping all the work we did over the years. That's worth a million dollars to me.

Love making PDF recipe books.with it. So easy. And my wife carries it on a thumbdrive everytime she goes to a friend's house .
Whatever you do, don't even THINK of buying anything else, especially one where it requires a CD to be inserted to run. Those kinds are slow as molasses and if you lose the CD, you have lost everything you did previously. Home Cookin is lightening fast. No CD. It has pure speed and it's idiot proof to use.

And, NO, I am not kin to the author of Home Cookin!!!

Tom Colvin I collect recipes, especially from the Rachael Ray Show [the only weekday show I follow religiously!]. Normally, when Rachael has a recipe I really like, I go online and copy the recipe into Word, along with the link back to the recipe so that I can watch the video if necessary.

This recipe program is the first one I've ever discovered that works for me. To enter one of Rachael's recipes, one first cuts and pastes the ingredients into the left hand panel. Then one cuts and pastes the directions into the right hand panel. One can then copy ONE of the photos into the Photo Section. I also add the recipes internet address at the top of the Directions panel. Click save.

Recipes can be added into "Chapters." I set one up for Rachael Ray.

When I then clicked to read the recipe, it came up well formatted, with the photo at the top. JUST THE WAY I WANT IT!!!

The program has functionality well beyond what I just described, such as resizing the ingredients.

As far as I'm concerned, this is the easiest and best recipe program ever. All the others I've tried -- maybe 10 of them over the years -- require tedious entry of each ingredient into separate fields -- an effort I simply don't have patience for.

And there's the added benefit that I can carry the recipes with me on a USB stick when I visit my second residence.

THANKS to the developer for coming up with such a useful software -- and for making it available at half price via Bits du Jour.

Nick Katz Hi. I tried to import recipes from Masterook but all I get is garbage characters. Is it possible to do this?. I tried to import a cookbook.

Anthony Watson Hi Nick,

You can only import recipes that have been "exported" from Mastercook. The raw data files from that software are not supported.

If you export the recipes from Mastercook to a text file, you should have no difficulties importing them into Home Cookin.

Take care!

gail f Can this program import recipes from plain text like ShopNCook software does? Sounds great but getting hundreds of recipes into it via cut and paste won't be worth it.

It says it imports from "other recipe software"--what ones exactly?

Thanks!

Peter pereh I tried to create PDF-files from entries in the demo-db, but somehow the pictures are not involved in the PDF.

Anthony Watson Gail,

Yes, Home Cookin can import from plain text files (or from text copied to Windows clipboard from web pages, email, or other apps). The manual import screen will let you define which lines of the text are the title, ingredients, and directions.

Home Cookin can also import the following formats automatically (without manual intervention): Mastercook, Meal-Master, Big-Oven, Cookbook Wizard, From Scratch, From My Kitchen, Living Cookbook, Now You're Cooking, Recipe Processor, and Computer Chef.

Anthony Watson Peter,

The PDF Book feature is currently limited to text only and does not support photos at this time.

Peter pereh Hello Anthony,

do you plan to include the pictures in the next version?

Anthony Watson Photo printing is already supported in the normal print operations, but I am planning to add photo support to the PDF feature as well in a future update. However, I do not have an estimate of when it will be implemented.

Doug Atkinson Couldn't a user thus use a PDF virtual printer (like the free PDF Creator) to print the photos with text to their own PDF? At least until your software incorporates it directly...

Anthony Watson Doug,

Yes, you can print to a virtual PDF printer but it won't have the proper "gutters" for a printed cookbook (different margins on left and right sides of opposite pages), won't have a title page, and won't have an index at the end. Otherwise a virtual PDF printer should work fine.

Anthony Watson Dale,

The purchase link should be active through the 12th, so if the Plimus/PayPal link isn't working today you can try again in a day or two. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Peter pereh A question about the database: is there a size limit and/or a limit of entries that might slow down the program when exceeded? And: can the DB be located at a special location (partition, mybe) to include it in an existing backup routine?

Anthony Watson The technical limit is approximately 2 Billion recipes, but you're likely to run out of disk space before then. I ran tests years ago with several hundred thousand recipes on an old P4 computer and didn't detect any significant slowdowns. More current computers should have no problems with a million or more recipes.

You can't change the location of the database, but you can install Home Cookin to any drive or folder you wish. The program files are just over 1 meg in size (less than a single digital photo), so they won't consume much of your backup space. In addition, backing up both the program and data files will make recovering much easier if you should have problems in the future.
