What are people saying about HTML Text Extractor

Mike Tashker Bought that puppy over a year ago, maybe from you. It works but you have to enter the url directly into the product (or copy/paste). I sent them email:

"Fine product. But. Isn't it time to have an IE toolbar that will launch HTML Text Extractor and copy the URL to it? (Forgive me if this feature already exists--I haven't been able to find it)."

Received a reply:
"That's a really great idea, I'll add it to the list for the next version"

That was Oct/2006.

Nico Westerdale It still is a good idea - however we've been very busy working on other projects, namely running Bits du Jour which we now do!

You can drag and drop a URL or an HTML page into the main area on the software, hopefully that will help.

Gosha Mazov Heh!
The Aml Pages make it better and simple. Select area on web page (in any web browsser), drag to Aml Assist panel. Choose Format - oops, and you're done.

Nico Westerdale Marvin, those tools are designed to analyze the page, the HTML Text Extractor is for getting at the text of a webpage. It works with encrypted pages or pages that are generated with Javascript.

Gosha, I don't see how your link applies, thats for something different.

Nico Westerdale Gosha, AMLPages is a very different product HTML Text Extractor and it really is aimed at a different set of users and has a different set of tools with some overlap, and it costs significantly more.

In addition you should really mention that you're the developer of the product. We really don't like developers trying to muscle in on other promotions to promote their product in place of theirs, we'll bear this in mind for your submission to BitsDuJour. You've also listed your product as a user suggestion, which it's not.

LU Hello Nico

I read an older comment for this product back in Dec 20 2007.

Have you made any updates to this product since then or is it pretty much matured?

Also, does this also import any CSS with the information?

Thanks for the great software and website by the way.

Ralph Bressler I just downloaded the trial to give it...a try. The display seems to show the text but since all the options to print, save and copy have been disabled I cannot fully evaluate the program! I guess I will have to wait for the deal to become available.

I am one of those page/site designers that sometimes wants to protect their work. I am not sure I appreciate a programmer developing something to get around this! I DO sometimes want to get MY text back from a page and this may be a good way to do that.

Snirkelsnekke Kricht What is so special on copying text from any website?
Every modern Browser has developer tools integrated that could do the job, if there were any.

VLM Sean X and Snirkelsnekke - I cannot respond to your comments from a technical perspective--a programmer's perspective But of my own experience, I can say that sometimes I do experience difficulty extracting certain content from certain web pages. Now, this may occur because of my own ignorance. But is this not precisely the point ... that those of us who focus our attention on matters other than the technicalities of web usage can have tools to help us accomplish things we otherwise might not accomplish?

Sometimes, a person can become very narrow, seeing the world only through his/her own eyes, giving no heed to the perceptions and experiences of others. Speaking for myself--and apparently not only for myself--a tool such as this can prove most helpful at times. If you do not find it so, then perhaps you might find within yourselves the simple kindness not to assault the rest of us who do.

OTOH, if you wish to provide an EXPLANATION that others among this BDJ community might be able to USE ... well, THAT would be most helpful and welcome indeed!!! For example, Snirkelsnekke, you write "Every modern Browser has developer tools ... ." What do you have in mind here? If you don't tell us, are we to read your mind?

Anyone can tear down, this requires neither talent nor insight. But to build up ... THIS requires a far larger person indeed!

Merry Christmas to all!!!

Eustace Phenackertiban Looks like a solution looking for a problem. As a professional developer, I can use the free tools in Firefox to "View Generated Source" and grab anything that I want. Eustace Phenackertiban Can what be automated? Using the Web Developer Toolbar, or Firebug? I suppose that it could, using one of the free macro recorders that abound online. I don't know why I would bother, though, because I would still need to use the mouse to highlight and copy the text I want. I use Yankee Clipper or ClipStory to stack copies, so I could gather what I wanted manually almost as quickly as any automated process could do it, and probably with greater accuracy. Is that what you're talking about?

Mike Cowen It would be nice if this integrated into the browser to capture what is displayed on a specific part of the screen. I have one dynamic site where all the code framework is visible (view source), but I can't find/copy (from cache) the actual content that's displayed. It's the content I want!

When the FIRST site I tried stopped it dead in its tracks with frames, I quickly went from excited to annoyed. There are common web features around for years (frames, user logins, CSS, etc.) that aren't supported here. I'm with @Cliff Knight. Had I paid money for this, I'd feel ripped off. In getting it for nothing, I got my money's worth.

Perhaps our friends at Iconico will take this list seriously as a feature request to make this product something VERY useful to the majority of US!

Snirkelsnekke Kricht @VLM

I can understand your point. But the reality shows, that most users have different programs installed for similar or even tasks. Programs eating drive space and sometimes calculating power.
So have I. I´m using a half dozen picture editing tools that come in the game when the big suites capabilities fail.

In the case of HTML it might be similar. But as I know, it is very easy to extract everything except some dynamically created content from every website using the modern browsers integrated debugging features.
Probably this tool makes it possible to extract every text passage accumulated together in one big textfile. I do not know more about it and I´m not willing to install it cause I see no need for it, thats why I asked.

Best regards, and have a good christmas time!

VLM Snirkelsnekke Kricht - Thank you for your kind response.

In one question earlier in this conversation, I asked about using this tool --- and I could expand that to any tool -- to extract content from, say Google books or ScribD. If I may ask, have you (or anyone else) ever tried to do this?

Eustace Phenackertiban Ah, so your objective is to acquire copyrighted material without paying for it. I see. Well, checking the source code of Google Books pages, the text is actually there in the source, but it appears that it is processed by scripting for actual styling and display. So, you could do a good deal of cleanup, probably using F&R, and extract the text of the book. C'mon! You mean you're averse to doing a little work to steal the fruits of someone else's labor. Tsk, tsk... ;-)

Given the way that page is rendered, I frankly don't know how any HTML-based screen scraper could grab the rendered content. And, just guessing here, but with the resources available to a behemoth like Google, or Amazon, or... well, let's just say that I doubt that any small shop is going to be defeating their protections any time soon, at least, not for $19.95. ;-)

VLM Eustace - Thank you for your response.

Occasionally on ScribD, and quite extensively on Google Books, there are works that are out of copyright and have been for ages. In particular on Google Books, there are records from the US Congress (Annals of Congress) dating all the way back to the first Congress. There are writings of some economic and political thinkers from the 1700s and 1800s. And much more. I'm interested in some of those.

I've heard of this happening with older programs not recognising newer versions of browsers as being more recent than the version they are checking for. If you look at the date of the HTML Text Extractor installer it's May 2006, nearly nine years ago. (Which explains why at the top of the page it says ' Platforms: Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT, Me, XP, Vista'.) Looks like its not your browser but the program that's 'outdated'.

As for iconico, I think they have stopped developing all of their software. Most, if not all, of their programs have been given away here free and claim they have lifetime upgrades.

Their cute context menu program was one I purchased long ago and then got a new computer and it is incompatible with it. I contacted them about it and Constantin Florea replied to me, so I assume he is their dev.
He told me there were no plans to ever update it to work with the latest windows.

Constantin Florea @Tudor User, The promotion hasn't started yet but it will in the next days. Please notice the "Deal Coming Soon" label (white text on orange background) at the top.

Quill Pen Pardon my dust. Constantine.
I juxtaposed 2 emails, one from Bits, a second by another giveaway location.
Babysitting a tiny terror and trying to work on PC doesn't mix.
Tried to erase my last post but because there is no delete and all I could do is erase it, the darn thing still shows up. grrrrr
Everyone feel free to give it a thumbs down. :))
Oh, drat, there is no thumbs down button either.
