Steven Avery Hi Folks, This was a nice deal, since HyperSnap and SnagIt are two of the leaders here (and HyperSnap is clearly very well designed) .. and they have real text capture .. this is one very major missing link in the 3-4 screen capture freebies I use - and text capture is very important (as is text annotation). Two others I hope to check out, maybe with good text features are Aqua Deskperience and Snapture. Not a personal recommendation, since I have not loaded them, but strong interest. Now with Hypersnap last night when I tried to do the textsnap the last step did not take (release the mouse, hear the sound and the picture in the Hypersnap area) while regular screen capture worked .. and it was too late in the evening to have the energy to ask on the Hypersnap forums, so I passed for now. So I will mention the problem in Hyperion-land, and look forward to either a repeat or your having a product like one of the ones above. You have a nice service here, the program quality is generally high and reasonable priced (like Hypersnap) so I will be watching pretty much daily and spread the word some. Greg Kochaniak Thank you for your positive remarks on my HyperSnap program, Steven! TextSnap is not perfect, I know this and try to improve it where I can. It only captures the text drawn by the program during the window contents refresh event, and using Windows system text drawing calls. A nice enhancement would be to add a screen OCR to recognize letters that can not be captured by this more reliable system hook technique. Always room for improvement!

Steven Avery Thanks for the explanation, Greg ! I will play with Hypersnap now some more that I have it loaded. The interface is very fine. Oh, after I rebooted Hypersnap did properly "try" to textsnap a picture .. understandably it simply didn't find any text. However it didn't simply ignore my request :-). And I wondered how that text-capture issue works. I will be testing to see who does have an OCR-type text capture (a bit sophisticated for a shareware and low-price program) - if anyone - most don't have even your level .. oh are there examples where you capture text that is not gettable with cut-and-paste, outside of menus/buttons types of things ? As for the main reason this is important, a lot of times from Google books I would like to not have to type in a paragraph by hand (fair use allowed) on the books that are not text available. Oh, I will look over your forums too, now that I understand the genre better. I have been using an acceptable freeware but would prefer something with more flair and versatility and text annotation (which I sort of assume you have, without having checked). And if nothing else the name HyperSnap has more pizazz than your close competitor, whose name sound like your shirt got caught on a piece of metal :-) . Greg Kochaniak I was able to capture text for example from some web pages, where text copy was disabled. From program dialog boxes, from Windows folders and many other examples which I no longer remember. One OCR type text capture from the screen was called Kleptomania, check: http://www.structurise.com/kleptomania / They would recognize text even if you capture a screen image and then pass it to Kleptomania. However, there are cases when it's not very accurate, sometimes fonts (letter, digits or special characters) are mistaken or missing. TextSnap either works at 100% accuracy, or not at all...

Steven Avery Greg, thanks for the follow-up.

With a few minutes, I will try Hypersnap on some disabled screens (e.g. some .pdf are cut-and-paste disabled, possibly it works there -- I don't hit many web-pages unless it is a .jpg-pic-type text) and see how it does.

And I will try Kleptomania for Google-type OCR tries. Probably will work better on modern squarish-type than on some of the older fonts where some junque is expected (even the Google text on that, when available, is uneven). A good lead, though, and not pricey, worth it even for limited snap-use.

Shalom,
Steven

Greg Kochaniak HyperSnap TextSnap technology so far does not work for PDF files. PDF reader uses its own font technology, not built-in Window text drawing API calls, that I can capture.
Kleptomania will not work on PDF either (at least it did not work at the time I tried it) - they only recognize standard Windows fonts installed with Windows system, not propiretary technologies such as PDF.
