"...we are using iMacros to automate information quality audits of institutional sites, and also to streamline our information gathering and research tasks without taxing corporate IT resources." -- Alex McKenzie, The World Bank

More and more these days, web development means a lot of testing in various browsers, making changes and adjustments, refreshing, retesting, over and over and over again. Sound familiar? And time-intensive? And boring?

iMacros lets you create solutions for web automation, web scraping or web testing in minutes. It's like the ultimate robot stand-in for all of your web browser testing needs! Whatever you used to do manually, iMacros can do automatically -- stuff like filling out forms, clicking on links, performing inquiries, you name it, iMacros has it. Multiple page forms? Not a problem for iMacros.

With iMacros, you can automatically upload and download text, images, files, even entire web pages.

iMacros also contains a command-line interface and application programming interface (API) to automate more complicated tasks and integrate with other programs or scripts. The Scripting Interface of iMacros is designed as a Component Object Model (COM) object and allows the user to remote control (script) the iMacros Browser, Internet Explorer and Firefox web browser from any Windows programming or scripting language!

Please note: Today's 50% discount applies to the Standard and Enterprise editions of iMacros! Take a look at the comparison matrix to decide which version is right for you and your company.

I know what some of you are thinking -- your sites make heavy use of Java, Flash, Flex, and Silverlight elements, so what good is iMacros? Well, you take those words right back, because iMacros is the only tool that performs in-browser tests of Java, Flash, Flex or Silverlight applets and all AJAX elements!

This promotion includes the following:
iMacros Standard Edition ($495)
iMacros Enterprise Edition ($995)

eb235 I suggest some clarification : the editions proposed on the BDJ discount page (Power Surfer, Pro, Scripting) do not match the editions found on the comparison matrix at iOpus web site.
Namely :
- the Power Surfer Edition seems to have vanished (nothing can be bought at $49.95, but there's a free add-on as before)
- the Pro Edition would match the Standard version (?) except for the price ($199 vs. $495)
- the Scripting Edition (announced at $499) must be the Enterprise Edition which now rockets at $995 !!

I'm afraid BDJ did not change the wording of the 2011 offer. A long while ago, I noticed iOpus changed its product line, doubling the price of the most useful version (former Scripting edition) from $499 to $995 !!

Back in 2011 a number of people complained $250 was too high a price. In 2013, 50% off a price that has doubled will no doubt bring even more regrets !

But I may be wrong in my comparison, hence the need for clarification.

disenchanted I have been looking at several of these "macro recorders" programs.

There are at least 12 different ones.
The main differences are:
1. whether or not you can create your own "executable files" from your own macro's.
2. Whether it can be used to create macro's for your "windows desktop only" or also "in conjunction with your browser".

In reviewing the list of products in this software category, it is a bit overwhelming. So many software programs out there and so many features sets.
Only place to get an idea of every application's capabilities is on
wikipedia, under "Macro recorders".

Has iOpus done any side-by-side features comparisons with any of it's competitors products, such as:

-Automation Anywhere
-jitbit Macro Recorder
-LordUI - Lord of User Interface
- Macro Expert
-Macro Express
-Workspace Macro
-UBot Studio

Roberto just add quick macros.

Robert Edwards I have been using Macro Express Pro for years (with a mix of AutoIt when I need to compile something). I recently purchased Quick Macros and have been testing it's compile ability. Both programs were under $50 and work with any Windows app or web browser (-VS- just a web browser). The other one I looked at was Macro Scheduler. It has a VB / C type of scripting look. But it was more than double the price of the two above.

eb235 In the product presentation the (short) list of available licence types has been amended. Thanks.

But apart from the last 3 sentences, the whole review is totally obsolete (now I'm sure) :
- the Power Surfer Edition has been discontinued (replaced by a free add-on for -IE, along with the always free add-ons for Chrome and Firefox)(free add-on macros can be callled from javascript if you need tests or loops)

- BUT the free IE add-on can't do anything with "Java, Flash, Flex, and Silverlight elements". For that you have to switch to the current Standard Edition. In short what was available at $49.90 is now $495.

- AND the (discontinued) Scripting Edition which was $495 is now the Enterprise Edition at $995.

I do not know whether M. Derek Lee is with BDJ or iOpus but a misleading "review" of very expensive products that have raised in price by a factor of 2 to 10 does not inspire trust. Especially one or two days before the promotion and after a minimal correction.

Brandon H I purchased iMacros Scripting Edition on the last BDJ deal period.
I have to say, iOpus support has been very good in my experience, both direct and on their forum.

iMacros is very different from the typical macro recorder/player that automates keyboard/mouse actions.

iMacros runs within the browser, and for the most part, anything a human can do in the browser, iMacros can do in an automated fashion by focusing on HTML elements in the page and/or using image search and direct coordinate clicks.
I believe the browser add-on has some limitations though.

As for the pricing model, it definitely changed as others have noted.
However, it wasn't just a straight doubling.

The current Enterprise Edition includes unlimited players for clients within your organization, whereas to get the same in the previous model you would need the Scripting Edition ($495) *plus* the unlimited player license ($399), so it really comes out to only a $101 or ~20% price increase.

If you're using/developing macros *just* for yourself, then yes, the price essentially doubled since you pay for players you're not going to use.
But if you're using/developing macros for use throughout your organization, then it was only a ~20% increase.

eb235 The product presentation has been finally updated. So please note most of my previous comments are no longer applicable.

Yet missing the deal last time is bound to be a **big** regret forever (a $250 regret !).
Brandon H is quite right in his calculations and comments. The product is now "corporate-only" (pricewise). I'm unsure this is the main orientation of BDJ followers.

TAPTRONIC Nice product I am sure but its now out of my price range. It *was* in my price range when I chose to follow it here on BDJ. Oh well.

Ipswitch Hi - as the name suggests, our iMacros Enterprise Edition targets companies that use iMacros to either directly earn money with it (think of web scraping), or that use it to save tons of time (money) with it. Examples for the later include general web/process automation, ERP automation, data entry - and web testing.

BDJ users that plan to use iMacros for non-profit or hobby work can email us and ask about an additional discount. Just mention this posting!

Brandon H EDIT: See Mathias's post above. :)

Existing customers under upgrade protection get a significant discount on additional licenses (20% discount) and upgrade protection renewal (50% discount).

There was a significant discount when I upgraded from the Scripting Edition I purchased via BDJ to the Enterprise Bundle 1 which is equivalent to the current Enterprise edition (adds player licenses).

I'm not sure if there is still a discount on upgrading between versions as my license is now considered Enterprise bundle so I can't tell whether there's no upgrades or I just can't see them because I have nowhere to go "up" to.

Gonzo Would an alternative to this be Selenium? Or am I misunderstanding the purpose of this application?
Jul 10 2013 at 4:17pm Copy Link
Ipswitch Yes, in the web testing space iMacros is often used as an alternative or "upgrade" to Selenium (easier to use, powerful API, support).
iOpus Software GmbH - Jul 11 2013 at 12:43am Copy Link
Brandon H It's not 12 months of use, it's 12 months of upgrades. The version you purchase will continue to function after your maintenance period expires.

As for price vs volume sales, with volume sales come more support request and/or a lowering of support quality. Iomega had excellent support in the business space in the Bernoulli days. When they went mass-market with Zip, things quickly went downhill, then Click of Death killed what was left.

Sure, it'd be *nice* if it was cheaper, but I personally do see the value in the price, and Mathias already offered additional discount above.

pcaltair I purchased v8 last year. What should I be doing to upgrade to V9?
Jul 12 2013 at 1:01pm Copy Link
Brandon H @pcaltair - if you're still current on upgrade protection, you should be able to download V9. Check
Jul 12 2013 at 1:17pm Copy Link
pcaltair My protection was not up to date and it expired. When I tried to find out my option I am prompted for Enterprise edition. My original purchase was for Standard Edition.
In case I do not want to buy or upgrade, can I get to download the old version 8.
I do not find any download link for version 8 !
