What are people saying about Image Comparer

David Gilmour Interesting concept, and could potentially be useful to me in sorting through similar takes from a photo shoot. In my evaluation though, Image Comparer (IC) stumbled in a couple ways. It's great that works with RAW files, as I shoot almost exclusively RAW, but IC presented *all* of the thumbnails of my .CR2 images landscape oriented. 90% of the photographs that I make are are portrait oriented, and IC presents these misoriented by 90 degrees. IC apparently doesn't use the camera orientation information embedded in the CR2 file, unlike just about every commercial image handling application that I have used. I could find no settings or references about this point in the documentation or publisher's site. The second stumbling point for me was the haltingly slow scrolling speed in the gallery view (I am running a fast dual-core PC with max RAM.) I hope the next version will address these issues, as I do like the concept.

Will Comparer be compatible with Win.7 ?
Aug 19 2009 at 4:15am Copy Link
Max Smirnoff Neola Fritz, Image Comparer is compatible both with Windows Vista and Windows 7
Bolide Software - Aug 19 2009 at 4:28am Copy Link
Stefan Hauber Perhaps an inconventional usage:

Doing some video-cuts, I often wondered if one compression would be better than another one.

I suppose with ImageComparer, I can't compare complete Videos, but when snipping out certain frames (pictures of the very same scene, of two differently compressed videos), can I compare these two and get a descriptive comparison result, e.g. how sharp these are, how much they differ, perhaps even a look at the image itself with the pixels pointed out, where they differ?
Feb 5 2010 at 4:57pm Copy Link
Jon Koerner I downloaded image comparer and Installed it on an XP SP2 system, which is malware-free and on which everything else is working okay.

I immediately got error messages, the first two times I tried to do a simply scan of a single pictures folder for similar pictures. I restarted IC3 and got another error message when I tried to create a "gallery".

So unfortunately it is not working very well fo rme with the trial.

Max Smirnoff Jon, try to disable multicore CPU support in the program's Preferences (menu item Tools-Preferences).

Stefan, Image Comparer can estimate similiraty percentage between images and highlight the most different parts
Bolide Software - Feb 10 2010 at 11:12pm Copy Link
Jon Koerner I did what you suggested, but I still cannot create an image gallery. It complains that it can't find the image gallery that I'm trying to create. Of course it can't find it - it has not yet been created. I think this software is badly in need of some beta testing before you try to sell it.
Feb 15 2010 at 12:15am Copy Link
anthonyraynor? I already own this product and it does a respectable, but not perfect job.  As you reduce the similarity threshold it makes more mistakes, but it beats the heck out of manually comparing 20K photos.
Aug 21 2010 at 2:22pm Copy Link
PG BNax T Raynor: Agreed. Worthy purchase. I'm heavily into bird photography, and this app truly makes review sessions much easier. FYI: License follows user, not machine.

Basil Ogger I  signed up for a BDJ account so I can see more future deals but I can't log in and it does not work...   But it said my user name already in use.  ???  What's the problem? -- I am comparing this Image Comparer to the free VisiPics 1.3 to see which is better.  VisiPics works pretty well.  Maybe the vendor will say how they compare?
Aug 24 2010 at 6:42pm Copy Link
Frank Stephens I like comparison programs.  I'll have to compare Image Comparer, , and .  I'm aware of another, but it's not under development.
Aug 24 2010 at 7:13pm Copy Link
anthonyraynor? As a free offering VisiPics wasn't bad, but Image Comparer worked better for me.  At the current price it's like a second opinion, as most programs lose accuracy as you decrease the percent of similarity when they search.
Aug 25 2010 at 1:06am Copy Link
Jerry S I'm one of those photographers who believes in the insurance of just one more shot. As a result, I have many near-duplicates. I tried the demo Image Comparer - and I am very impressed. It really identifies the differences between the near-dupes. At this price, I'm sold.

Tore Hoyem Swreg tacks on an additional $3,50 fee if you want to pay using PayPal, which I find quite annoying. A shame, because this deal looked quite interesting.
Aug 27 2010 at 8:55pm Copy Link
bob roos I tried to drag the folder to be compared (that is all photos within one folder to each other) and it would not allow drag and drop. :( It did a very nice job of finding identical photo with different names, BUT marking them and manipulating them seems very awkward. I clicked the column header to mark identical photos and it seems to mark BOTH sides. How can you delete the dupes if both sides are marked? Also there seems to be no UNmark just an INVERT mark?

Jan 14 2013 at 1:38am Copy Link
Retired Engineer I'll second icon image comparison! I could make really good use of it.
Jan 14 2013 at 8:02am Copy Link
Danny Is that no unnecessary application?
Jan 14 2013 at 8:26am Copy Link
Max Smirnoff Stephen, it is better to use Image Comparer for the images larger than 32x32 pixels.

The comparison algorithm is tuned for the usual color photos. It is a good idea to test the program with your actual images with the free trial first

Image Comparer is not an abandoned project.
Bolide Software - Jan 14 2013 at 9:57am Copy Link
Retired Engineer Max:

You have said, "The comparison algorithm is tuned ...". If you could "tune" it to icons, this would be a great utility, which I would be happy to purchase at a much higher price.

Something for you to think about.
Jan 14 2013 at 10:35am Copy Link
Stephen Stewart I would love this program if it really worked!

Using the trial version, at lower than a 100% threshold, it's a real crapshoot whether or not the images are even similar at all: what are the ideal settings for having a LOW false positive rate???
Jan 15 2013 at 7:38am Copy Link
Max Smirnoff Stephen, 99% threshold should be set for the minimum false positives if you are looking for the similar images. 100% threshold can be used if you are looking for exact duplicates only.
Bolide Software - Jan 15 2013 at 8:05am Copy Link
Toyzrme Version history is a mixed bag - slow releases means you get more time with free upgrades, but slow response to bugs/feature updates.

Looks like only 1 more minor update in the 3.x release cycle:
Image Comparer
2004 = 2.0 released
2005 = 2.2
2007 = 3.0
2009/Oct = 3.7
2011/March = 3.8

AudioComparer (another product by Bolide)
2009/Jan = 1.0
2009/Feb = 1.1
2009/Mar = 1.2
2009/Mar = 1.3
2009/Jun = 1.4
2009/Sep = 1.5
2011/Mar = 1.6
2011/Nov = 1.7
I bought & used this product (Audio Comparer) a fair amount, with mixed results. When it works, it's useful, but misses files, and I'm not sure how soon that will be fixed. Unfortunately, with the slow release cycle, other products have passed it by.

Jun 12 2013 at 7:51am Copy Link
Danny Hopefully we'll get answers today!
Jun 13 2013 at 12:50am Copy Link
Max Smirnoff Michael, yes we will make 4.0 version free for the customers from BDJ only. Usually, upgrade to the next major versions costs 50% of the retail price.

Danny, I am not completely understand your question. Do you mean viruses, malware or somethng else? Our programs never contain any bad things like viruses/malware/spyware.

Retired Engineer, Image Comparer can process .ico files. Howvever, to get the good results, the image should be at least 32x32 or larger
Bolide Software - Jun 13 2013 at 12:58am Copy Link
Stefan Hauber we will make 4.0 version free for the customers from BDJ only.

Just 4.0 or all 4.x versions?
Jun 13 2013 at 1:26am Copy Link
Max Smirnoff Stefan, the license is valid for all minor versions inside the one major version. So, yes, 4.x versions will be free for today's BDJ orders. You'll need to get new registration details for 4.x versions, but this will be easy (simple web form with e-mail and name) and free.

Danny This has same method as duplicate finder/cleaner application?
Jun 13 2013 at 6:25am Copy Link
Lito Just bought a license and it works well. It's just what I was looking for and it properly sees that 2 images are 99% the same when the only difference is that one image is a higher resolution than the other one.

One feature I think that is missing is an open with default viewer option or specified image viewer. Opening full screen doesn't really help that much for me because when the 2 images are up they are scaled to about the same size. I'd rather open them both individually in my default image viewer to get a better look at them.
