What are people saying about IP Traffic Monitor

Fran harter When I tried to install it, I get to the part where winpcap is to be installed.

My vista (ultimate version) installation says a newer version of winpcap already exists and the installation for winpcap will be aborted.

If I de-select installing the winpcap install option, the ability to proceed with the installation of this software goes away, as the "next" button becomes "grayed out".

How do I install this if I already have the winpcap ?

Sep 25 2009 at 1:34am Copy Link
John Douglas Just uninstall Winpcap before installing IP Traffic Monitor.
IP Traffic Monitor includes current stable release of Winpcap.
The problem arise only if the current experimental beta version of Winpcap is installed.
IP Traffic Monitor includes version 4.0.2 of Winpcap, current beta version of Winpcap is 4.1 beta5.
Skyward Software - Sep 25 2009 at 1:47am Copy Link
Glenn Botts I had Winpcap 4.0.2 installed and I only had the option to force the Winpcap install to continue installing your software. Whenever you include a third party driver always assume that your code is out of date and never require the user to install it. It's fine to check whether it's installed and current, then giving the user the change to install the third party code; however, under no circumstances require the user to install it.

Genie au Travail Thank you for the quick answer.

If I understand well the licence policy, if I purchase this version, the next version will be free ?
Oct 31 2011 at 10:18am Copy Link
John Douglas Only minor versions will be free.

Az Wiz I have a wireless router with 4 lan ports. Will a pc on the lan be able to monitor network traffic from all users? individually ?
Nov 3 2011 at 12:14am Copy Link
Software Guy one possible use for this software is to find embedded keyloggers-like spyrecon, spectorsoft and many others. With that in mind, please clarify - the software can be used by a single user on their desktop and laptop(s), correct? Although this version does not work with wifi, will it workas deigned if we simply connect the laptop to the router with ethernet cable? Thanks.

Steven Avery Hi,

This looks like a solid Bits. The X-Stat Net Professional mentioned above is a $50 program, apparently it is a bit techie oriented.

If anyone finds a real comparison run-down of these programs, it would be interesting. A solid comparison. (Many of the TCP/IP monitoring programs are really designed for network management, however often we simply want to monitor the individual PC.)

I am especially interested in the security aspect, (ie. linking to the .exe, letting you know about unverified or unusual activity, user friendliness in the realm of warnings). As a comparison of another type of program In the same way that WinPatrol is the leader from the security perspective of Startup organizers, but other programs may excel in other areas.

B Josephs Can this be installed on a server running Server2008 to be used by the Sysadmin only (1 user)?
Nov 3 2011 at 8:25am Copy Link
Lupke Brother This vendor has a lot of other tools on his website (total 5):

but only ip traffic monitor can be bought from his website. When I try to buy other applications this message is shown:
This product has been deleted from the system and is no longer available for purchase. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

Will ip traffic monitor disappear too?
Nov 3 2011 at 11:21am Copy Link
Steven Avery One of the tools that I would like to see compared is the one from Sysinternals

Also Currports from Nirsoft.

This program does look rather nice, I loaded it up, the lack of continuing response from the software rep (John Douglas) is a bit of problem.

The trial is a bit annoying, with a popup. Now I have this msg.

"Maximum number of captured packets is reached. Capture will be stopped".

Which now is ok. Puzzling.

I wonder if the Destination could have more WhoIs info than the Port and IP info and Remote Host. I would like to see more info there on request.

Overall I think this is well designed and worthy of consideration, especially with the BIts special, however the vendor vanish is not so good.

Nov 3 2011 at 10:00pm Copy Link
Genie au Travail About the vendor which has vanish:

Yes, it's very strange.
I don't have purchase the sofware due to lack of support for WiFi connections
Perhaps not so bad after all...

Fletch Fascinating tool. When looking at Real Time by Process, the Full Path column is empty. That's pretty important info. A bug?

No discount for major upgrade could make this deal an 'as is' deal, but at a nice price.

Wish I could choose a different font.

So I need to keep the tool running in order to accumulate any data? Closing the tool seems to discard all data captured thus far.

This statement from the help...

"IP Traffic Monitor is an application designed to stay quietly in your system tray and monitors all your network connections."

...confuses me. Minimizing the app does not send it to the system tray.

Right click 'Open file location' does not work either. Limitation of the eval?
Apr 11 2012 at 6:58pm Copy Link
John Douglas The Full Path column may be empty in some cases, if the program can't locate full path to the actual process.

Yes, the minor upgrades is free. Can't guarantee that major upgrades will be free, but in some cases it also free as a special deal.

It is impossible to choose a different font in current version of the program.

The History Data service keeps running all the time and accumulate all data. The GUI provides access to this data through History tab.

'Open file location' only works if the full path column is not empty.
Skyward Software - Apr 14 2012 at 3:29am Copy Link

bob roos This is a clever idea. I was wishing for such a program just the other day.

This would be more useful to me (I am on limited internet) if it could show only the traffic for the last nn seconds dropping things out if they have no activity during that period. I like the history it provides, but the current activity is more important. I understand I can sort by "last activity", but that is not dynamically refreshed and I am not sure I want things jumping around so much anyway.

I would also like to see a current total traffic rate updated every second.

Also it told me WinPcap was installed and up to date (correct) but did not continue with the installation until I manually unchecked the box to not install and then I got a couple more messages about it before the installation proceeded. The program should have noted that it was up-to-date and gone on allowing me to leave the box checked.

I put in the filter to exclude local traffic and it stopped reporting all traffic.
Apr 14 2012 at 6:13am Copy Link
Fletch For me, the full path column is empty for all cases. Even something basic as iexplore.exe, which Task manager easily identifies the path for.
Apr 14 2012 at 10:27am Copy Link
bob roos @ron, look at all the different options and expand the + signs. Sometimes there are several paths for the same address. There were not a lot, but they were scattered around.
Apr 14 2012 at 11:24am Copy Link
Fletch I did an expand-all, no path info for anything. There are 3 items in the IP Traffic Monitor list that are also displayed in Task Manager, and Task Manager is able to show their path.
Apr 14 2012 at 2:56pm Copy Link
bob roos I was hoping for some input from John Douglas by now. This program has some bugs (the install with Win PCap and it the paths it does show aren't always correct -- like Google update show with a path to another program that is running).

Also, please clear your browser cache first. Then try to use FireFox but before starting the download make sure to delete the contents of the Downloads folder which FireFox uses to put all the downloaded files. If that doesn’t work please try Google Chrome (with the browser cache deleted).

Norwel Gordon John, Thank you for the EULA reply.
I tried ordering but your system keeps rejecting my zip code as "must be filled in correctly". This has been my zip code for decades and works for all other orders.
I have checked and it is "filled in correctly".
So now what should I do?
Jun 23 2013 at 1:39pm Copy Link

How do I contact "Advantage support"?

And what does "adding one cipher" mean?

Norwel Gordon I tried contacting "Avangate support" at
and reach a page requesting my email address (which I supplied) and a PASSWORD which they say I should have received when I placed my order.
I have received no password or any other reply or communication other than the
few, less than helpful responses above, including the suggestion that "Adding one cipher may be enough" to which I requested further detail or explanation at 1:49 yesterday. No response to that request has been received from John Douglas.
Can anyone else suggest what "adding one cipher" to my zip code might mean, or how I can contact Avangate without a password or supply a password that will work.
Jun 24 2013 at 8:07am Copy Link
John Douglas Norwell, i mean, if you zip code looks like 12345 - 5 digits, just try to add one digit 123456. It may be bug in Avangate validation script or something else.

Michael R. Sorry to hear that. Will you implement it soon in a free update? I suppose it would make really sense, because not all entries are readable and it is really difficult to find out, what has been sent just by looking at the hex-values. And I suppose implementing this is not really a big thing, since the values are already available...
