Prospective Buyer The Run Favorites feature would be more useful if it opened favorites in tabs rather than separate windows. (I'm using IE9 and FF4 on Windows 7 x64).

Opening favorites individually: they open in tabs when the default browser is FF4, but separate windows when it's IE9.

I frequently change my machine's default browser, but LinkCollector forces me to use the default that's set under Options; it would be good to have the option of using the machine's default browser.

usage question The "Policy" on this page states:
"Product purchase allows use for 12 months."

However, the linked license statement says:
"The registration fee grants you the right to use this SOFTWARE for unlimited time..."

I assume the latter, not the former, is correct?

Tazzie @ Paul ...
I purchased LinkCollector PC and love using it. I would like to upgrade, but I'm a bit confused.

Is LinkCollector Portable the only version of LinkCollector now?

Can I upgrade to LinkCollector Portable? If I install that over my installed version of LinkCollector PC, will it replace my registration file?

Thanks!

Michael K I would appreciate some clarification of the licensing policy please. It says we may install LinkCollector Portable on a PC and a laptop which is fine since many users have both these days. However, it does not say that additionally it can be installed on a USB drive - how then is it "portable"?

Does the program send or store any of my bookmarks on your servers, "the cloud:, or anywhere else other than a user's own equipment?

Thanks

Michael

Eddie Tex @ Michael K,

Per the overview on their website:

"LinkCollector is a portable bookmarks manager that can be installed on a workstation or a USB Drive. The program will help you import bookmarks from supported browsers and store them in a standalone database. You can use your bookmarks on any computer, at home or at work. LinkCollector can also work with portable browsers and with browsers installed in the system."

Michael K Thank you Eddie, yes I did read all that but the underlying questions remain for the developer to respond to:

1) As many of us have a PC and a Laptop can we install LinkCollector Portable on each of these in addition to a usb drive which then fulfills the "portable" element.

2) Are my links stored anywhere other than on these three items - PC, laptop, usb drive - that is, are my links stored on the developer's servers or the cloud etc.which is not what I personally want.

I await the developer's response in due course

Thanks

Michael

Paul Bejenari The personal license allows you to use program on PC, laptop, USB drive and on any other portable device by one person. The program stores your bookmarks only in the file you created (is not used any server, cloud...). After 12 months the program will work and you can use the program. To get next versions after 12 months you need to register by 50% discount.

Software Guy Thanks Michael K for your excellent questions and thanks Paul for very clear answers.
Another question - recently I ran into a problem with the reinstallation of DRM (computer footprint plus third party activation) software. After weeks, the problem remains unresolved - which has now caused me great concern - to the point of avoiding software sold by certain software commercial vendor sites. So here are the questions: Does the user get a complete installation file to instal and archive after purchase? and does the user get a key to also store with the installation (or full executable file)?

Reason I ask:Certain sites use installation downloader files for software setup, meaning the user is forced to purchase 'extended download options' at extra cost if they ever need to reload the software. When this option is teamed with footprint activation and anything has changed on your computer (such as upgrading your processor or motherboard - not unusual when something overheats), then you could be in for a world of hurt and hours of wasted time. Other BDJ members have had similar complaints in the past. So, do we get a full installer version of the software to download with key? Or is there a third party 'source ' for the installed specific version requiring the hardware footprint for activation? Thanks.

The registration file/key just remove a 'Not registered' text from program background. The program is absolutely functionally also after 30 days trial.
Is not used any hardware activation. Also is not used a Windows registry. You can archive your program directory with registration file. The program will work.

Richard Paris Hi. Does LinkCollector have any means to manage usernames and passwords associated with websites requiring authentication? I suggest that this is an essential feature for a portable link manager. If this is not a current feature, please advise where this lies on the product roadmap. Thanks.

Jim Bo Some areas for improvement:

1) Remember the folders I had open when I re-open the program.

2) Support opening bookmarks in tabs in IE as you do with Firefox.

Hi Richard, I'll be interested to see what the developer makes of your request to manage usernames and passwords.

Personally I see them as two separate applications and although I used to use Roboform to manage logins, I now use Sticky Password and see it sitting side by side on my usb stick with LinkCollector Portable.

Thanks

VLM I also am curious about how this program relates to Linkman. I can see them as potential competitors, but because of the portability of LinkCollector, I can also see them as complementary. One might use Linkman at home, then export to LinkCollector on the road, so to speak.

What do people think?

DroidLuvr @VLM -- re: Linkman Pro competitor vs. complementary -- Linkman Pro already has the ability to install to a USB drive as well as work on your HDD, so this program would be redundant if you already have Linkman (I think...) -- I picked it up here a while back, and just double-checked: it does have that capability FYI...

Maybe the developer could tell us what the difference might be as far as the portability because my experience with Linkman Pro has been outstanding, but I haven't tried the portable installation yet...

Bruno Verschraegen I had no time to download and "play around" with the trial version. Would anyone have answers to the following questions?

1) Does LinkCollector import folders and sub-folders created in IE? Or are all IE favorites stored in one same level within LC?

2) In case folder structure is maintained, can selected folders be excluded from importting into LC?

2) Could LC be used to create and use a common favorites resource to be used by 3 team laptops? Meaniong that any new favorite created on one of the 3 laptops is automatically synched to/with the other 2? And what happens with favorites bveing deleted?

Paul Bejenari Bruno Verschraegen
1) You can work with IE favorites direct from program. Also you can import IE favorites (with structure) into the bookmarks list of program.
2) You can not exclude any folder when import, but you can copy folders between bookmarks collections.
3) Yes you can. Also you can create your favorites folder (for portable IE) and also store it on USB flash drive. If you will remove bookmark from any browser using LinkCollector, it will be removed and from browser.

Amit 1) Can we put tags or own comments and keywords to the bookmarks ?

2) Can we define as many custom browser paths - to be chosen to open the bookmark - like portable browser paths - or only installed firefox / chrome etc will be used ?

3) Can it work with portable browsers - and import + export to any portable browser path - like -

1) Can you explain license policy - does it allow installation on all handheld devices as well as COMPUTERS too -

"Each license allows installation on all handheld devices, but LinkCollector Portable may not be used at exactly the same time on each of them."

2) Also - if I have 2 computers running at the same time - like 1 desktop and 1 laptop - then even i cant keep linkcollector opened on both ? Confusing too get this.
I keep my 2 computers running most of the time.

Kelly Major Downloaded to trial. Imported my FF bookmarks. When trying to save the LC data base I get the following error (I suspect it is related to the exclamation mark)

Error [1]: SQL error or missing database.
"SELECT * FROM DataTable WHERE name="Plex It! " and folder=0 and

gName?"head"?[0];h.appendChild?s?;void?0?;" and parent=497": near
"script": syntax error.

I tried to delete it before saving but it seems to want to delete it from FF which I don't want to happen. I assumed that would onl y happen if I later performed a sync.

Please Advise. - KEM

Cary Ann I downloaded the evaluation software from your website. It correctly identified my default browser (Chromium) but couldn't locate its bookmarks. The bookmark field is grayed out so that I can't enter the bookmarks path.

It did display my IE bookmarks, but did not display my Firefox of Chrome (Canary) bookmarks, even though those apps and their bookmark paths appear as "installed browsers" under Tools/Options. FWIW the ini files for those browsers don't contain the app paths... do I need to edit those manually since their Options entries are also greyed out.

What am I doing wrong.

F.J. Garvin I downloaded the trial. Now a very intuitive program. And the on-line help file is totally useless. A simple start wizard would go a long way to get this program useful. I can see from poking around that it apparently syncs the bookmarks from the individual browsers but it is not clear if it then writes the updated file back to the browsers to keep them in sync. I would at least expect some sort of comparison module to show what bookmarks are in the main sync file and what needs to be added or deleted to the browsers. Maybe I am missing the point but without a help file, I can’t tell what the program should be doing.
