What are people saying about LinkStash

Mike G Looks like a very nice utility for organizing favorites/bookmarks. However, what about favicon support? In your user forum, customer requests for favicon support have languished (no response) for more than 5 years.

Mike G I don't know how difficult it will be to add favicon support, so best of luck. I will be honest with folks, after trying LinkStash for a couple days, I'm very enthusiastic and fully intend to purchase it with or without favicons. This is the favorites/bookmark management tool I've been searching for! Can't tell you how happy I am to get away from Organize Favorites in IE6/IE7.

Kevin P Looked like a great program. Downloaded trial, but it crashes a lot.

I.e." LinkStash has encountered a proglem and needs to close. "

This seems to happen most often with the Dead Link check tool.
I'm running on XP SP2 with all updates in place. This machine has been rock solid for years, so I don't believe the problem is with my system.

Mike G Kevin I'm surprised to hear LS is unstable on your system. I've been banging on it hard for several days and it's been 100% stable for me. Forum shows one crash report in 2008 (March) which was fixed in the next version.

I even contemplated making another glowing post about stability and blazing performance. I have over 2919 bookmarks and LS returns search results in approx. one second. (I tend to get enthusiastic about software, especially if it's taken me a long time to find something I like.)

Anyway, when I saw your post I decided to run dead link check against all 2919 favorites. Up to then I only checked a few folders for fear it would take forever. Well, not only did LS remain stable, but it surprised me by finishing in just a few minutes.

Specs: XP SP3, IE7, 2.8GHz P4, 2GB RAM

Kevin P Hi Mike,

The crashes did not occur when actually running the link check, but when working with the results. I don't know the exact steps to reproduce the crash, but it happened at least 4 times within 1 hour, even after a reboot (just in case).

I have just over 1,500 links in FireFox, and they are well organized, so this product wasn't critical for me, but it would have been nice.

Tony Setti For the most part, I love it, but there are a couple of flies in my soup...

When exporting to HTML, it doesn't export tags or the extended notes.

Doesn't seem to be any way to import Powermarks bookmark files, and manual import is out of the question - got thousands upon thousands of the little critters, with keywords and notes, plus ratings and color-coding, etc. PM reached end-of-life a few months ago, so I'm sure I'm not the only one scrambling to replace it before it quits working. :-(

Any idea if and when you're gonna swat these flies? ;-)

Kelly Hamblin I am trying this out and I like it - HOWEVER - since favicons are missing, I find myself always going back to using my old bookmarks as it is so much faster to find what I'm looking for. The fact that folks have been waiting FIVE YEARS for favicons to be added doesn't augur well the next release either.

John Williams Kevin P, I'm also very surprised to hear about the crash you are seeing. We have thousands of copies out there and I've had no reports of a crash in the current version. In fact there has only been a couple of crashes reported ever since we released many years ago - and they were fixed. If you can manage to reproduce this with steps, please can you contact me via the support form (http://www.xrayz.co.uk/su...il_support) and I will investigate this.

I find in your web two editions "desktop computer" and "portable device" and my question is:

After buy it, I can downloading both or only one edition?

In future, how work your update system? I mean, if the update is perpetually or we need to buy an upgrade?

Thanks

John W Oscar,

You can use either or both the portable and desktop version. Just use the same serial number, all will be OK. So, you are getting both portable and the desktop download.

You will receive upgrades to all 2.x versions for free, there are no other limits or restrictions. There's still plenty of new stuff to add to 2.x. So for this price you are getting a bargain.

Oscar Magallanes I already imported more than 5000 bookmarks from Firefox and check the integration with this browser, everything is ok. But...

I meet the requirement to integrate the favicon, it is very usefully. But a new one requirement is for copy the "description tag" from the linked page to "Comment field". This simple option is great because you don't need to retype or insert yourself a description about the site.

So, do you think is possible do it?

Thank you
Oscar

John W Ian, I think in your case you must be checking sites that are slow to respond. LinkStash must wait for a result, it could take a fraction of a second for a quick site, or 10 seconds if the site has problems or is slow to respond. But while it's waiting it doesn't sit idle, it checks other sites. This delay is not LinkStash, the delay is caused by either the connection to the server or the host. I just dead-link-checked 1000 bookmarks in under 4 minutes.

Michelle M. I purchased LinkStash months ago (full price), having tried many other URL managers/organizers. LinkStash is the best. Stable under Vista, works with FF, IE and Opera (also Google Chrome and Nestscape but I don't have these installed), has tags, has dead link checker, duplicate checker etc. I love the fact that it's also portable and I carry it on my USB stick along with all my bookmarks. I hope the next version could sync with firefox as it does with IE. Also, I wish for a better favicon support. Despite these minor shortcomings, I believe LinkStash IS the best of its kind.

K H I purchased this lovely little gem the last time it was offered here. How clever of me! I didn't really know I needed a program like this until I tried it out. The minute I open my Firefox browser, it is right there on the job. I appreciate the ability to highlight folders and use tags. It never flakes out, never crashes, never causes me grief of any kind. I have only one wish for its future development. Like Michelle, (see the above comment) I am watching for the update information that will say: LinkStash now supports favicons!

LinkStash was my first purchase from this developer. More recently I purchased ClipCache - the perfect clip manager. Thanks XRayz. More! More!

Mike G I'm an IT pro with lots of other interests that gradually led to over 3500 bookmarks. I also use multiple browsers including IE and Chrome. Finding favorites, let alone managing them, became an ordeal to put it mildly.

LinkStash changed all that. Now I store all bookmarks in LinkStash. It allows me to find anything almost instantaneously; opens links in the browser you choose; supports drag-n-drop and lets you store passwords and additional meta data with each bookmark. Do yourself a favor. Even if you only have 100 bookmarks, import them into LinkStash and try a couple searches or other features to get an idea why everyone posting here so far is a fan.

Laurie Nelson Thanks for your reply. Yes, I grabbed both versions, but I only installed the desktop version.

After seeing your email just now, I deleted the D/Led portable version from Power Desk (which I use instead of Windows Explorer). Then I uninstalled LinkStash (even though it was the desktop version), D/Led the desktop version again, and reinstalled it. I still can't use it, though, because it says my trial period has expired.

P.S. I just reread your message and thought I remembered trying it before. Luckily I keep track of programs I try and found that I did in April 2009 (v. 2.0.12). One reason I didn't like it back then is because I couldn't put a URL in more than one folder (with an alias). Is that possible now?

This would be similar model to Roboform password manager that I don't need to carry on my USB drive anymore!

bvssunnydale Hi, even if it's no longer in production I'm a long-time user of PowerMarks, which seems to have many of the same features of this. I have over 10K bookmarks so was wondering if you know if a powermarks file can import to your product. Powermarks best features are (1) that it can default to keyword (tag) searches - meaning I get to determine the terms it searches on, (2) it allows me to select which browser to default to (I change them from time to time) and (3) it ties directly into the browser toolbar(s) so I can just click to add (then provides me the option to add keywords and a description - can Linkstash do this (and import PowerMarks HTML export? - again, I'm especially concerned about importing the keywords). Many thanks, Wm Shore.

John Williams @Wm Shore 1) LinkStash can search tags, but not tags on their own (i.e. the page title field is also searched.) However, searching will get an overhaul soon and this will be possible. 2) You can choose which browser LS uses to open bookmarks, you can override this per bookmark. 3) LS can import HTML bookmarks files - in Netscape format - but it doesn't support PowerMarks custom format, so you'd lose the PM keywords. Looking at the PM format, it seems it would be easy enough to import the PM keywords as LS tags, I'll add this to my todo list.

John Williams @Ash Goyal I'm running LinkStash with a bookmark file that's in my DropBox. So far all is fine, no problems to report. This is great news because it means you can have your bookmarks on a central server, accessible from an Internet connection anywhere. A feature I would like to add is for LS to check if the bookmark file has been changed by *someone else* that you have shared the file with (either via DropBox or on a local network.) If it has been changed then I'd like LS read the changes. This means if 2 or more people have the same bookmark file open they could share their changes.

You can also save the search criteria as a "saved search" - it saves the criteria not the results so you can quickly switch between searching for tags or all fields (click restore settings in Find Settings) with a click.

Linkstash has an automated sync function for IE bookmarks, but only for IE. Other browsers you have to do manually. I.e. Firefox you have to export your bookmarks manually and upload the file to linkstash to sync your bookmarks. Correct me if I'm wrong.

John Williams Bookmarks are stored locally. They are stored in a single file, so to move to another (new) computer just copy the bookmark file. There is also a portable version so you can have access to them on the move. For those with sensitive bookmarks you can encrypt the entire bookmark file too. And you're correct, you would typically use LinkStash for your bookmarks, no need to use FF bookmarks manager anymore. It is possible to put your LinkStash bookmarks into FF if you so wish to, there is just no sync for doing it with FF like there is with IE. There are keyboard shortcuts for many toolbar/menu commands, but not all of them.

John Williams Lupke, you are correct about sync with IE. I am currently looking at syncing with FF, but I can't promise anything. Aug 2 2011 at 7:08am Copy Link

VLM Thanks for all your explanations, John. Great to have a vendor genuinely present in the conversation.

So we can set systemwide hotkeys of our own choosing from within LinkStash, that way the same keys work for all browsers ... correct? And those may include Winkey hotkeys, correct? (Pleeeeeeease :):)

And we have a single LinkStash bookmarks file that can serve multiple browsers ... OR separate LinkStash files for whatever purpose we may have in our minds (such as they may be), either way ... correct? And each such file can be separately encrypted, in case we wish to destroy our own access to all our own bookmarks one day, correct?

Does a bookmark point to a specific place within a webpage or document, or only to top-of-page / top-of-file? (I ask, because there is another app called "Bookmark Docs", http://www.bookmarkdocs.com/, which points to anywhere within a page, for a specified list of supported document types.)

Rich OBrien Will LinkStash be upgraded to also support Chrome? Millions of us use Chrome and some people think Chrome is growing so fast that it will surpass Firefox in the next few months. I've been waiting for nine years for a good bookmark manager ever since a nearly perfect bookmark manager called Compass was never updated to work with newer versions of Windows. The list of LinkStash improvements in version 2.0 is impressive. I downloaded the trial version and attempted to install it but repeatedly get the error message: "The application was unable to start correctly." What I wished to find out was how LinkStash handles duplicate bookmarks. Compass found all duplicate bookmarks and showed the complete path to each duplicate so you could see exactly what folders and sub-folders the bookmarks were in to be able to make an informed decision before deleting a duplicate. I'm disappointed that I was unable to try LinkStash. It truly sounds like it may be the best bookmark manager.

John Williams System wide hotkeys are setup in LinkStash, so you can have the same hotkey to use in all browsers. There's a single bookmark file for all browsers. If you wanted to have different bookmark files you could do that I suppose (not sure how that would work without more thought), but LinkStash is designed to work with one. LinkStash can also bookmark documents, not just URLs, but won't know a specific location within a document. It will open the document with the associated program.

John Williams LinkStash will be updated to support Chrome 13.x - it works with Chrome 12.x but they have made changes in v13 that prevents LinkStash from bookmarking URLs. Version 13 has just been released (as stable code) so that is why you may notice it not working if you upgraded to Chrome 13.

John Williams Firefox keywords are not part of LinkStash. But what you would do is add the keyword to LinkStash bookmark property, either in a comment or a tag and then you can search on that. It has search as you type, so it's nice to use. Then hit enter to open the page in FF (assuming that is the browser you have set as your preferred browser.) You may have to hit tab first to select the bookmark. Conveniently you can set LinkStash, so when the LinkStash window is opened (by a hotkey for example) you can start typing in the search box immediately.

John Williams James, you can, but the *current* release won't update/reload the bookmark file when it has been changed by another computer. You'd have to manually reload it. If you ask will this feature (auto reload a changed bookmark file e.g. by another computer via dropbox) be in a future release, 100% yes.

Charlie N Exciting product! I have two questions:

1. Will the Chrome 13 interface and Firefox sync be part of version 2.x so they are included in this purchase?

2. I just did a fast review but is there a way to have the default be to "open in a new TAB" rather than a new Window? Too many windows the way I browse.

Thanks!

John Williams Charlie, the fix for Chrome 13 will be in a maintenance release which will be v2 - so free. I doubt FF sync, should it be added, will be in v2. Regarding tabs, there should be an option in the browser, to open pages from external apps either in a new tab or new window, my guess is it's set to new window.

Charlie N Thanks for the prompt response, John.

I can get the bookmarks to either open in a new window or replace the current window (IE) but not in a new tab. Can you be more specific?

I have set IE to open in a new tab and i have unclicked the open in new window in LinkStash.

John Williams Charlie, see if my settings help... select "always open bookmark in new window" in LinkStash|options|browser. Next set IE9 options|tabs to "let IE decide how popups should open" - this works for me, should do for you I hope.

bvssunnydale Can this, by any chance, import PowerMarks files - or would you know of a way to accomplish this? (I have over 10K links in PM..). Thanks.

VLM Hi John, and I agree with the expressions of appreciation, from above. You really have gone above and beyond today!

I would like to pursue the Firefox keywords discussion from above just a bit further, if you are willing (and when you awaken :):) I've already processed my purchase of 5 million licenses, so there is no issue about when the deal ends, and you should have adequate funding to continue in business through at least this coming Friday.

If I understand correctly, it would go something like this:

1. Enter hotkey to activate LinkStash/bring it to foreground.
2. Begin typing the keyword.
3. When LinkStash has enough to identify the desired link uniquely (which in my case may often be the entire keyword string), click or enter a hotkey to select that link, and it will open automagically in a new tab in FF (assuming the correct settings, as you have described above).

That's it, if I understand correctly, and assuming all the correct config settings to support that series of actions are in place ... correct?

If yes, then this is good, because it matches well what I would have to do now in FF:

1. hotkey to select the URL bar
2. type keyword (must be exact)
3. press "enter"

This seems roughly similar to me. Do you agree, or am I missing something, such as an extra step with LinkStash that I might like to know about?

TIA!!!

John Williams Wm Shore, I elieve you can export PowerMarks as HTML or IE Favorites then import them to LinkStash.

John Williams Following on from the FF keywords topic, yes you have got that right, 1) hotkey for LinkStash 2) type the phrase/keyword 3) click the bookmark to open it in FF, or if you want to use the keyboard you'd have to Tab to the results pane and press Enter. That last bit (hitting tab) is the only difference.

But you know, I think I will add to the todo list "pressing enter in the search box opens the selected bookmark."

Make sure "find box gets focus when main window activated" is selected in LinkStash|options|advanced. This is so you don't have to click the find box and can start typing into it immediately.

John Williams The encryption for the whole bookmark file is needed only once when it's opened. It encrypts everything in the file: page titles, commetns etc..

In *addtion* to whole file encryption, LinkStash manages website passwords. The password fields for websites stored in the bookmark file are encrypted, access to the bookmark password is via a master password, and we call this "signing-in", you stay signed in uintil either of these, you choose at the sign-in stage:

- screen saver activation
- a specific duration (e.g. 5 minutes)

You can set security levesl for each bookmark's password to override the sign-in settings:

- no security: need not be signed in
- low security: need to be signed in (you'll be prompted if needed)
- high security: always need to sign in (even if already signed in)

VLM Thanks John ... and I like this idea:

But you know, I think I will add to the todo list "pressing enter in the search box opens the selected bookmark."

Eliminating keystrokes is almost always desirable. :):)

Regarding passwords, if I read this correctly, you're politely suggesting that LinkStash is an alternative to RoboForm for PWD management, correct? If "yes", then can one import from RF?

I particularly like the no/low/high options, very nice idea.
___
Regarding password timeout, may I suggest adding timeout options for standby, hibernation, and logout. Some people (like me :) never use a screensaver, always use standby instead. Energy-conscious and all that. :)

John Williams This has been added (enter in search box) and working fine so far in my test build. It will be included in the maintenance release due soon.

Roboform will do much more than LinkStash when it comes to forms, but yes for basic info: user name, password (and one custom field) it works great.

Added the other timeouts to my list - thanks. Maybe for now have a dummy screen saver set to "blank" (so no CPU use) that is set to trigger a few minutes before the standby.

VLM Well John, it's the name of the ministry in which I serve. My name is much shorter! But whenever I act in my capacity in the ministry, I use that name, then inscribe my own name beneath, where needed. It's one of those law things ! :):)

Stuart Henderson Just wanted to add here that I really needed a bookmark manager that could cope elegantly with intranet/internet URLs as well as file system endpoints.

Not being able to wait any longer for this to come up in BDJ I ended up getting a copy via the website.

Man! This is really really good software. Does exactly what I need just the way I want it to. This will save me loads of time and will pay for itself in a week. Can't recommend it highly enough!
